When we asked Chris Pierce to join us on the podcast, we already knew he was an amazing musician.  His music has been nominated for awards, he's been featured on NPR and the TV show This is Us; you only have to listen to him sing a few bars to really appreciate the depth of his craft.  What we did not know, but will quickly be obvious when you're just a few minutes into the episode, is what an amazing human he is.  Chris has not had a super easy life - among other things, he has been falsely accused and arrested, he has been beaten, he has witnessed a cross burning in his yard as a child, and perhaps most devastating to a budding musician, he lost his hearing at a young age (since partially corrected through surgery).  And yet, his enduring belief is that challenging times lead us to something even more beautiful than we could have imagined, and staying open to vulnerability leads to growth.  Chris believes love translates like nothing else; when confronted by an angry attendee at a recent concert, he responded in a calm, respectful way.  When we both marveled at the way he handled the situation, Chris told us: love is the biggest weapon we have.   It is also a verb: we love Chris Pierce. Listen in - we think you will love him too.   CHRIS PIERCE gained national prominence with “We Can Always Come Back To This”. His hit co-write aired on 3 episodes of the #1 NBC primetime series ‘THIS IS US', then went on to peak at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and #12 on iTunes Top 100. Pierce has done worldwide headlining tours and has performed on stage with: Seal, Cold War Kids, Al Green, Rodrigo y Gabriella, Jill Scott, Toots & the Maytals, Sara Bareilles, Buddy Guy, Keb'Mo', Blind Boys of Alabama, B.B. King, Aaron Neville and others. Pierce's 2020 collaboration in Americana duo WAR & PIERCE yielded the hit single “AMEN” which was featured on NPR's WORLD CAFE and aired on 200+ AAA / NonComm stations, then racked up 2M spins on Spotify.  He also is part of a new project called LEON CREEK who will be releasing their first album in the fall of 2021.  Chris Pierce recently performed at NPR's Mountain Stage which broadcast on 300 NPR Stations.  His 2021 album, 'AMERICAN SILENCE' has garnered massive critical acclaim from NPR, SiriusXM, The Bluegrass Situation, NoDepression, Rolling Stone Country, AmericanaUK and more. www.chrispierce.com

Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou Records has just released a solo acoustic version of Alastair Greene’s “Bayou Mile,” a song from his critically acclaimed recent album THE NEW WORLD BLUES. The album dropped in October 2020, quickly garnering rave reviews, hitting #3 and #6 in its first two weeks on the Billboard Blues Chart, climbing major radio charts, and getting heavy airplay on Sirius/XM’s Bluesville. Greene had traveled to Houma, Louisiana to record with Grammy-nominated Benoit, who produced, played drums and sang harmonies on this record, along with bass player Corey Duplechin. The diverse, thoughtfully penned songs are all Greene originals, with a few co-written with Benoit. The 11 songs cover a lot of ground, tying together Greene’s varied influences into his deeply rooted playing, singing and songwriting. The songs are stylistically diverse, but they all capture the feel of the Cajun environment, paired with a rock-solid Louisiana rhythm section. “’Bayou Mile’ was one of 2 songs that I wrote with Tab Benoit during the recording sessions for THE NEW WORLD BLUES. Tab had already worked with me on arranging and re-writing a couple of the tunes I brought with me so I already trusted his instincts and direction. Tab lives by a bayou outside of New Orleans in Houma, Louisiana. One day before we started working I took a walk around his neighborhood and some lyrics started forming in my head. I had just come off of a long U.S. tour and had been stranded at JFK airport for the night trying to get to New Orleans. So I started with that lyrically. When I got back to the studio I started messing around on Tab's acoustic guitar. When Tab came to the studio to begin work that day I started showing him the song and told him I needed help with the lyrics. He came up with so many amazing lines that really painted a glorious picture. Only someone that grew up in the bayou could come up with lyrics such as "So lay me down in the sugar cane, and wash over me like a summer rain." So good! This song has become what is probably my favorite song on the album and definitely my favorite song that I've ever co-written with anyone. This song started on acoustic guitars so it makes sense and means a lot to me to release an acoustic version of it." - Alastair Greene

Surviving the Music Industry

Joe Bonamassa is a two-time GRAMMY-nominated artist, has over 30 records, achieved his 24th #1 album on the Billboard Blues Chart,  with his latest release, Royal Tea. Most might remember Joe from a young age making the local news circuits to promote a tour with B.B. King or the news cycle propping him to be a young prodigy at guitar. Other collaborations include Eric Clapton, Stephen Still, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Steve Winwood, Buddy Guy, and Beth Hart, just to name a few. Joe also runs a nonprofit organization called Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation with his long time business partner Roy Weisman, that supports local communities in financial distress and supports education through music. With a history like this, one might think that Brandon would have started at the beginning. It took one question from the top to allow Joe to share his thoughts on just about anything that was running on his mind in this down time. Nomadic by nature, Joe admits that this is the first time in his career that he has had to stop touring, but seems to be at peace with the decision in his grieving cycle. At the heart of the bluesman is a businessman. Joe had a lot to say about the cultural forecast that is to come because of Covid-19. Not to mention the already economic unsustainability of music. Like addictions to fame, securing your identity, and taking the criticism when you already knew you had the target on your back. American Songwriter Podcast Network

Jeremiah Johnson of Ruf Records checks in with Tom The Suit Forst on Chasing the Blues 2/Ep 22, discussing his upcoming album release on October 30, 2020 titled "Unemployed Highly Annoyed."This interview is the very first time the album has been unveiled to the media, which is a great honor to Chasing the Blues. Jeremiah reveals that the work is a concept album, with all the songs related to his time in quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also shares how fortunate he is that Ruf Records wanted to release it so soon after his album "Heaven's to Betsy," which went to Number 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
