The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Self-proclaimed “badass and blind” singer, songwriter, guitarist Raul Midón in an expansive and deeply personal conversation about music, identity, independence, and the art of seeing clearly without sight. From his childhood fascination with radio and jazz in a small New Mexico town to his breakout moment in New York with legendary producer Arif Mardin, Midón shares the story of how he forged his unique artistic path. Blind since infancy, Midón has navigated life and a career with extraordinary intention and vision. He discusses the development of his signature sound — a percussive, virtuosic guitar style combined with his soulful voice and signature trumpet-like vocal improvisation — as well as his time as a session singer, his decision to pursue a solo career, and his commitment to self-producing and engineering his own records. Here he also touches on his political awareness, his reflections on artistry and authenticity, and the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of making music. Whether he's performing solo or recording in his Maryland home studio, Midón offers a masterclass in independence, self-expression, and the power of knowing — and trusting — yourself. www.third-story.comwww.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Stephanie is the head of Economics and Government at Bloomberg News and head of Bloomberg Economics. Sixty-four countries (plus the European Union) — nearly half of the world's population — are facing an election this year. Some are calling 2024 “The Ultimate Election Year”, but what should we look out for? Stephanie Flanders says now is the time journalists and voters are called upon to think about the long-term issues facing their country and the world, and consider what each candidate might propose. With Donald Trump, a lot is guesswork, but Bloomberg's been running the numbers on inflation and debt - both of which are predicted to go up under the former president. Meanwhile, what exactly is Bidenomics? “Voternomics”, the newly-rebooted “Stephanomics” podcast has just launched. It will be looking at the intersection of geopolitics and the economy. In this insightful one-on-one discussion taped at the CUNY TV studios in NYC, Stephanie and Laura Flanders talk economics, elections, and a little bit about tug-of-war.  All that, plus a commentary from Laura.  Laura Flanders & Friends becomes Laura Flanders & Family this time.“. . . This is an opportunity to be thinking about not just what a politician is saying, but what are the long-term issues facing this country, any country? Are those policy recommendations fit for purpose? . . . Elections are opportunities for voters and journalists to raise their eyes to the horizon a little bit.” - Stephanie Flanders“[With tariffs] the goal is to make domestically produced goods look more attractive and cheaper . . . We saw with the tariffs under the previous Trump administration — many of which have been continued under President Biden, we should remember — that the overall effect was to lose cost jobs and to add to inflation.” - Stephanie FlandersGuest:  Stephanie Flanders: Head of Economics and Government at Bloomberg Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.Music In the Middle: "Wall of Indifference" by Raul Midon, from his album Lost & Found courtesy of the artist.  "Steppin" and "The Gall" by Podington Bear. Commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and generously supported by the Mellon Foundation, North of Never showcases seven people from the African diaspora experiencing weightlessness on a zero-gravity parabolic flight for over seven cumulative minutes. The film features video footage of the flight, along with interviews where the participants share their unique experiences. They discuss ideas of the chaotic nature of freedom, what it is to be lost in one's own body, and the collective phenomena of this moment. Artist Kambui Olujimi, and Vice President of Artistic Programming at Lincoln Center Jordana Leigh, will host a talkback following the premiere.  “What happens when boundlessness is not an anomaly but the context of our existence?,” says Kambui Olujimi.  #NorthStaratLincolnCenter

Unlike many albums coming out now that have a very real time-stamp on them reflecting on the past year, Alex Cuba was determined to create an album outside of that perspective. The result? Mendó, one of Cuba's most collaborative albums to date, sounding like it just came from a party we all should be attending. The title, Mendó, is an afro Cuban word meaning substance of the soul. Music as it best accompanies us in our life transitions and helps process emotions in ways our science has yet to understand. The six guests on the album, Lila Downs, Cimafunk, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Raul Midon, Antonio Carmona and Gian Marco are all dear to Alex and showcase the talent and versatility of Latin American music to evolve while staying true to it's afro Latin heritage. Sax and Flute player, Ze Carlos Bigorna, from Brazil, brings a rich album called Yramaia, featuring top notch musicians like Maurício Einhorn, Romero Lubambo, Pretinho da Serrinha, Wilson das Neves, Laudir de Oliveira, and Banda Azimuth. The album touched down in different parts of the world and created a very unique sound in every track. The musical arrangements are very rich, exquisite and groovy! Singer/songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón is on an undeniable roll. After GRAMMY® Award nominations for his two previous Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group releases – Bad Ass & Blind and If You Really Want, each for Best Jazz Vocal Album – he returns with his 11th studio album and fourth for the label: The Mirror, to be released March 13, 2020. The Mirror finds Midón breaking new ground for himself, including two entrancing solo spoken-word pieces (“If I Could See” and “One Day Without War”). The album also features studio meetings with such veteran jazz colorists as vibraphonist Joe Locke (“A Certain Café”), as well as a songwriting collaboration with top pianist Gerald Clayton, “Deep Dry Ocean.” Another highlight is the road-weary jazz ballad “Cold Cuts and Coffee,” while title track “The Mirror” beguiles with its easy tropical groove, lyrical sophistication and Midón's flowing electric guitar. As National Public Radio set the stage before his captivating edition of its “Tiny Desk Concert” broadcast: “Raul Midón lives in a world of sound. Blind since birth, Midón's interpretation of his surroundings is borderless. He sings with the passion of the best classic soul singers, and his instrumental chops stand alongside the most accomplished jazz musicians.” Along with his 11 studio albums as a solo artist, Midón – dubbed “an eclectic adventurist” by People magazine – has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, along with contributing to records by Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee's She Hate Me. A native of New Mexico who now lives in Maryland after years in New York, Midón has earned acclaim the world over, with a fanbase that stretches from San Francisco to India, Amsterdam to Tokyo. Marveling over his live performances, The New York Times has called Midón “a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus.” He recently performed in a special Homecoming Week music series at his alma mater, the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. He was surprised onstage with the school's most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Frost's dean said of the 1990 graduate: “Raul Midón truly personifies what a student at our school can achieve. It's a thrill to be able to honor Raul's extraordinary talent and exemplary accomplishments.” Originally aired in 2010. www.raulmidon.com www.joekelleyradio.com

Full episode notes are at https://Patreon.com/theLFShowCrip Camp is a Peabody Award-winning documentary from Netflix and Higher Ground Productions that tells the story of Camp Jened, a summer camp in the 1960s where disabled youth could be themselves. The film follows several former campers who went on to be leaders of the Disability Rights Movement. Laura speaks with the directors and producers of Crip Camp about how they are using the film to advance the next step in the revolution: Disability Justice, a movement that centers the leadership of disabled queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and people of color. If the inclusive culture of Camp Jened could help transform American society in the second half of the 20th century, what could a truly intersectional Disability Justice Movement change for us all today? Plus thoughts from Laura on interdependence.   Music Spotlight:  “Badass and Blind” the title track of Raul Midon's album released on Mack Avenue Records.  While mainstream media or money media keeps you in a bubble, we're committed to popping that bubble by continuing to bring you radical, intersectional media! 056: Aaron WhitbyGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, September 16th of 2020 Music is not content, it’s connection.Today we are blessed to have Aaron Whitby with us. But first here’s a random thought: Music used to be important. And it was a haven for the self important. It still sort of is, but musicians no longer make the same level of impact economically or culturally. It’s not quite running on fumes, but nowadays most of us would be happy for musicmaking to be merely sustainable. Some might even say that being sustainable is better than being important. But guess what? Back in that golden age when music was quote “really important”, it was not sustainable then either. What I mean is that we take our literal life in our hands when we choose to set about making music. It’s a risk, man. We’re actually getting closer to sustainability now, you could say it’s a beautiful time (aside from it being the apocalypse). Most of the time music works out ok if you work hard enough, make decent choices and keep your priorities more or less in line. But it’s not a magic ticket to some rarefied kind of existence where you get to hold yourself above other people. I mean, in America you can run your business however you see fit, but there are two sides to this coin: you find the fan who worships at the altar of the musician they love, and the musician who sometimes seems like they might just be seeking to be worshiped above all else - whose ego may be running the show.I won’t name any of them, but you know the trope. You probably also know that it’s not that simple. Not all musicians are provocateurs, serial abusers, pedophiles, womanizers, drug smugglers, tax cheaters or general get-somethin-for-nuthin types. Nor are we all deadbeats, addicts, vagrants and underearners. Most of the time we start out just wanting to play. Not knowing where the train is actually going, we chose to follow the energy and inspiration to wherever it may lead. But when an artist gets a little traction and starts working with investors (and that’ll be most of the artists you’ve heard of, barring almost none), oftentimes the investor will only stay happy if the artist continually generates energy around themselves, in order to generate attention for the music and get the numbers up so that the investor can profit. It’s not just a label or what have you, but it’s all the members of the artist’s team whose livelihood (and future) depends on those same numbers. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle: artist “just wants to make music”, gets some help in the form of a band, production team, label etcetera. Then the pressure starts to multiply. Every person added to the team is a new set of mouths to feed and before you know it, the artist has to become a factory of attention-getting tactics. Only some of which are related to creating excellent and satisfying music. They have to meet those numbers or the show falls apart. It’s an obligation entirely separate from the creative process. Folks wonder “where everything went wrong” but it’s part of the design. Basically, the music business will turn you into a pirate, and if you don’t want that to happen then you’re probably better off digging into what you’re really after and why. And if what you want is quote-unquote “real music” then keep listening because today we’re talking to a live one.(Which is good, because I’m about talked out here. )The point is Music is literally the most important thing for us here at the show. You just have to take the music seriously and not take yourself too seriously. The folks on here tend to really bring it.[Photo by Michael Weintrob]So. Aaron Whitby:is an award-winning record producer, composer/songwriter, pianist, engineer and educator born and raised in London, England and a longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York.Whitby is best known for his work with longtime collaborator Martha Redbone, who we heard from last week. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of many awards and are currently developing a musical commissioned by the Public Theater in NYC.[Photo by Molly Magnusson]Mentored by Ohio Player/Funkadelic Walter ‘Junie’ Morrison, Whitby has recorded with; Natalie Cole, George Clinton, Randy Brecker, Lisa Fischer, Tony Trischka, John McEuen, Raul Midon, Neil Sedaka and Rodney Holmes among many others. He has performed with Nona Hendryx, Brian Jackson, Vernon Reid of Living Colour, Ben Sollee, Mino Cinelu and Brooklyn Raga Massive among many others. He and Martha have been stacking up awards and commissions. That’s ongoing. But with Cousin From Another Planet, his debut album as a frontman, Whitby comes full circle to his jazz and funk roots pulling together an amazing cast of friends to realize his musical vision, as described by Greg Tate, “a funk-da-fied jam session feel undergirding tight, knotty jazz-smart progressions”. With tunes inspired by the animated energy and profound innocence of his young son, humorous lyrics that celebrate empathy and empowerment and musicians given the freedom to take the music wherever it feels good. According to Tate, this album is “one of this era’s hardiest re-dedications and festival-tent revival of soulful and exploratory jam-gnocity.” Cousin From Another Planet live onstage is a music and visual experience accompanied by a video artshow by VJ Lady Firefly (who has also worked with Dave Chappelle and The Roots) to capture the colorful, cartoonish and movement-inspired worldview.Like I said, we got a live one here.

He is the protégé of lauded composers and educators Ken Schaphorst and Frank Carlberg, and has studied under multiple Grammy-winning composer and bandleader Maria Schneider. Hailed by Herbie Hancock as showing "great promise as a new voice in the further development of jazz in the future," educator, arranger, and award-winning composer Omar Thomas has created music extensively in the contemporary jazz ensemble idiom. It was while completing his Master of Music Degree that he was appointed the position of Assistant Professor of Harmony at Berklee College of Music at the surprisingly young age of 23. He was awarded the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2008, and invited by the ASCAP Association to perform his music in their highly exclusive JaZzCap Showcase, held in New York City. In 2012, Omar was named the Boston Music Award's "Jazz Artist of the Year." Omar has had a number of celebrated singers perform over his arrangements, including Stephanie Mills, Yolanda Adams, Nona Hendryx, BeBe Winans, Kenny Lattimore, Marsha Ambrosius, Sheila E., Raul Midon, Leela James, Dionne Warwick, and Chaka Khan. His work is featured on Dianne Reeves's Grammy Award-winning album, "Beautiful Life." Omar's first album, "I AM," debuted at #1 on iTunes Jazz Charts and peaked at #13 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums Chart. His second release, " We Will Know: An LGBT Civil Rigths Piece in Four Movements," has been hailed by Grammy Award-wining drummer, composer, and producer Terri Lyne Carrington as being a "thought provoking, multi-layered masterpiece" which has "put him in the esteemed category of great artists." "We Will Know" was awarded two OUTMusic Awards, including "Album of the Year." For this work, Omar was named the 2014 Lavender Rhino Award recipient by The History Project, acknowledging his work as an up-and-coming activist in the Boston LGBTQ community. Says Terri Lyne: "Omar Thomas will prove to be one of the more important composer/arrangers of his time."

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón has earned renown as one of music's most distinctive and searching voices. He is "a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus," according to The New York Times. Midón has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, along with contributing to recordings by Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee's She Hate Me. The New Mexico native, blind since birth, has released seven albums since 1999, including the hit studio productions State of Mind (Manhattan/EMI, 2005), A World Within a World (Manhattan/EMI, 2007) and Synthesis (Decca/Universal, 2009). Midón's most recent release is the captivating CD/DVD Invisible Chains – Live from NYC. Attuned listeners can hear the inspirations of Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens in his work, as well as Sting and Paul Simon. But Midón's questing musicality makes him, as the Huffington Post put it, "a free man beyond category." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Reports from Mexico are equivocal in their expression, but not in their message: for those who went to this year's Mi Casa Holiday it's "Wow!", and for those who didn't it's "I won't miss it next year!" Earlier this month, a considerable contingent of the house music world descended on Mexico's bohemian Playa del Carmen, situated on the Yucatan Peninsula surrounded by Mayan ruins, palm trees, and breathtaking beaches.  The annual event is 4 days of activities designed to bring this community of like-minded people together in a unique way and to build within it a strong bond that continues long after the party is over.   This year, creator Julius the Mad Thinker, his sister Jennifer Hurst and co-organizer Keith Evans teamed up with innumerable Global Soul industry names to make the fourth season finale the best one ever. These include Wepa's Joanne Jimenez and Antonio Ocasio, Osunlade, Master Kev, David Sabat, United Music's Hallex M and Abel Rogers, Dive's DJ ALA and Mikeytown, Alex Callejo, Uhuru Africa's Adam Gibbons, Lady Alma, Ramon Rawsoul, Lego, AQBT and many many more. Here's what some had to say:  "Best weekend of my life!" Master Kev "Words can not express how unique and fun this trip was" Househead "I let out tears of joy" Deborah Conton "Yes indeed PARADISE!" Sabine Blazin Julius's thinking pays off. He chills with fellow Chicagoan Alex Callejo... and sports his Chihuahua T-Shirt. Niiice   Unfortunately, we could not make this year's Mi Casa (although we tried) but we join the chorus of all those who did not go in saying "we won't miss next year's!" It is now our goal and objective.  And to do our part from this side of the Pacific to spread the love, we're featuring this week one of our all time favorite Julius the Mad Thinker mixes titled "Don't Be Afraid".  Here's the tracklist: 1. George Levin - Late Discovery  2. Shannon Harris - ATEM RA  3. Pirahnahead Feat. Diviniti - Believe In Me  4. Reel People - It Will Be (Ezel & Kyoto Jazz Massive Mix)  5. Omar - Lay it Down (Andre Lodemann Remix)  6. Joey Negro pres. Akabu - Another World (Andre Lodemann mix)  7. Manoo - Kodjo  8. Kenny Bobien - Don't Be Afraid (Master Kev & Tony Loreto Deeper Vocal Mix)  11. Elements of Life feat. Lisa Fischer - Love will know (Louie Vega remix)  12. Malik Alston - Badeya  13. Episode #6 of the LMP features Jason Mraz and company from their 2006 fall tour. If you've never heard Mr. A-Z live you will be in for a pleasant treat. This show, at least, is a more stripped down version of his songs than you might hear on the radio (and it works very well). Jason's voice really shines when you pair it up with some acoustic guitars and a conga drum. This concert also features the talents of another singer/songwriter, Raul Midon, whose voice really matches up well with Jason's.  If you want to hear a good example of this check out Midon's song Keep on Hoping which can be downloaded on Itunes here .Jason and his band also know how to have a good time on stage and the crowd that night was more than willing to follow along. At one point in the concert they stop the music to play something called the Song Game. In the Song Game, Jason asks the audience to come up with several phrases and he then uses those to spontaneously create a song. I didn't include this in the podcast because it would take up too much time but it is definitely worth downloading the full show to listen to it. I'll stop my rambling about this one and let you form your own opinion about it. Hope you enjoy!
