ALLMAN BROTHERS' Sons: Devon and Duane Betts Lead Southern Rock

The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. The execution was brutal, but the rock ‘n' roll recording artists and longtime friends, along with their talented band mates – Matt Grundy (bass), John Lum (drums), David Gomez (percussion, sax), Jackson Stokes (guitar), were successful in breaking the previous record, playing 50 shows in 49 days in the summer of 2023, one of those dates being under the tent at Big Top Chautauqua.   EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Keenan McIntyre - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/   Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/   Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism   The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/   Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/   Kylmala Truss - https://www.kylmalatruss.com/  SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

#981 - Devon Allman The Devon Allman Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? We look at “here” as more than a place or time. It's a state of mind, and right now “here” goes by the more formal title: The Paul Leslie Hour. Okay, so we've got a very short interview from the archives with a prolific live and recording artist Devon Allman. Some of you are familiar with Devon Allman. He's created as a solo recording artist, but also with the Allman Betts Band and the Royal Southern Brotherhood  This interview was originally broadcast on the radio in 2007. At that time, Devon Allman was the front man for the band Honeytribe. They had just released their debut album “Torch.” This was a band creating art outside of the mainstream music business. Paul enjoyed the album and described Honeytribe being “for those who like what music is all about.” The band's sound could be described as a premium blend of rock, blues, instrumentals, and even reggae. As for Devon…you could say Devon Allman has music in his blood. His father, the late, legendary Gregg Allman once called him “a chip off of the old block.” But we think Devon Allman's style is distinctly his own. You'll enjoy Devon Allman's perspectives on the music business, and the message he is trying to send to all who listen. We've got even more interviews just like this. You can help make this show possible. Just go right here, and we thank you. And now, let's hear what Devon had to say when he called in to chat with Paul for a bit. Do you agree?

When Devon Allman was 20 years old, he was playing a gig at one of the largest outdoor venues in St. Louis, his hometown, and the reception was not what he had hoped. The son of Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Gregg Allman – a principle architect of American Classic Rock – Devon discussed his frustrations and fears with his mother, Shelley Jefts. She calmly reminded him that, “not everyone is going to like you.” That guidance helped Devon put the pressure of being the son of one of the great rock music icons behind him, which is easier said than done. Since then, he's built a sturdy career with several solo records and in bands like Honeytribe and the Royal Southern Brotherhood – traversing across the globe and entertaining millions. But in 2018, when he formed the critically-acclaimed Allman Betts Band with fellow Allman Brothers Band offspring Duane Betts and Berry Duane Oakley, Devon finally felt like he was home. As he put it to me on the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast, he had spent "20 years couch surfing and finally bought a house." Allman Betts released its first record, “Down to the River,” in 2019. Then in 2020, the band released its follow up effort, “Bless Your Heart.” Both albums were well-received and Allman Betts' following continues to grow as COVID restrictions being to lift and the gates prepare to bust wide open for live music once again. Devon digs deep discussing his career, meeting the father he met for the first time at age 16, the music that hooked him into becoming an artist, and his hopes of using his new record label to launch one star annually until his days are numbered. So listen up. Devon Allman has a lot to say. Enjoy!

Gerald Albright is one of the top saxophonists in the world.  Early in his career Gerald spent time playing the bass guitar, too!  In the early 1980's you could find him playing with the likes of Whitney Houston, The Temptations, Anita Baker and Patrice Rushen - just to name a few.  Gerald launched his solo career in 1987, in the infancy of what became the Smooth Jazz format.  He's recorded well over a dozen albums over his 30 year career as a solo artist, with the latest titled, 30.  You can also find this multi-Grammy nominated musician on the road with several of the his top world-class saxophone compadres touring as the Summer Horns.  Award-winning Ray White talks with Gerald about his last album G and his soon to be released project, and much more!  Lisa Davis features the Milligan Vaughan Project , one of Austin's favorite blues bands, led by vocalist Malford Milligan and Stevie Ray Vaughan's nephew Tyrone Vaughan - who's also a member of Royal Southern Brotherhood. Their latest album is MVP and is a rockin' project.  For additional information on our show visit http://www.cooolcat.com

Sammy Eubanks has been a stalwart in the Northwest US Blues Community for over 20 years.  He has released four albums along the way and the fifth; Sugar Me, hit the streets just a couple of months back. I am looking forward to chatting with Sammy about his journey and I am sure we will get a few Ted Todd stories along the way! Diana Rein has just released her sophomore effort, Long Road.  This talented multi-instrumentalist wrote all 12 songs on the disc.  She and I will look back on her journey, listen to tracks from Long Road and take a look at what is ahead for Diana. We have rescheduled Royal Southern Brotherhood to come in and talk about their latest release The Royal Gospel. Al Lerman returns to The Couch with his latest release, Slow Burn.  Al and I will chat about what has been going on in his world while we listen to tunes from the album.

I open the show speaking with Cee Cee James on Couch Kid News…Cee Cee and Rob have a new project in the works and we will discuss it and the fan-funding project they are running. I have met Chase Walker at the IBC when he has appeared in the Youth Showcase.  He now has his debut album, The Chase Walker Band and we will speak with him and his band-mates about their journey…though it has been a short-ride so far, it has been full of adventure and there is so much more to come. The Mighty Orq is out of Houston and was last seen on the stage at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis during the 2016 IBC Finals.  I look forward to speaking with this talented musicians and find out where he learned his distinctive style of performing.  We’ll also listen to tunes from his latest release, Love In A Hurricane. Then I get to sit with Cyril Neville, Tyrone Vaughn & Yonrico Scott from Royal Southern Brotherhood for a Couch Kid New Music Segment.  The band has released a new album entitled The Royal Gospel and the three guys wanted to speak about it. We’ll talk about the new music and what is next. Another Couch Kid New Music Segment with Reverend Freakchild returning to The Couch.  His new album is entitled Illogical Optimism.  I look forward to speaking to The Reverend about this three-disc release and also about the difficulties he has dealt with recently.

Gary Nicholson is a #1 hit songwriter, two time Grammy winning producer, recording artist, with over 500 of his songs recorded by artists as diverse as BB King, Garth Brooks, Etta James, and Ringo Starr to name a few.  He can also be “Whitey Johnson,” his bluesman alter ego, or a part of the Fortunate Sons rock band.  He and I will chat about his incredible career and new album, Whitey Johnson. Markey Blue is led by Markey and Ric Latina out of Nashville, TN  Markey's career began as a showgirl in Las Vegas and Ric has toured with Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams III and Gary Puckett among others before they joined together to put this band in motion. Their debut album, Hey Hey features Steve Cropper and is just great.  I wil chat with them about their lives and careers and where Markey Blue is heading.  Devon Allman will join me.  He has a new solo album entitled ragged & dirty and we will discuss the music on that album, his work with Royal Southern Brotherhood, the charities he supports and even his Hot Sauce!  I am excited to be able to speak with Devon and discuss his journey, which was influenced more by The Beatles and Kiss more than from his dad.  This should be fun! Nathan James first Sat On The Couch back on January of 2012 to be a part of the IBC Preview shows.  He now has a new album out that is actually two albums, Hear Me Calling (Acoustic solo) and Natural Born That Way (Electric band) which includes 4 songs done in each style.  I'll chat with Nathan about what has been going on in his life and career and we'll check out songs from each album. Despite his famous last name, Devon Allman has forged a path uniquely his own, beginning with his band, Honeytribe in 1999, then more recently, the Royal Southern Brotherhood, and his solo career. Now, hot on the heels of 2013’s Turquoise comes Allman’s finest work to date, Ragged & Dirty, an album that straddles Chicago blues with his Southern roots. We talk his improving guitar work, touring overseas, and why he chose to cover the Spinners’ classic “I’ll Be Around.”

Otherwise, she’ll make things very tense and awkward. That’s exactly what happened to a crowd in Cincinnati who drew the alt-country singer/songwriter’s wrath after she repeatedly asked them to not take videos or photos while she was performing. Case reportedly became surly with the crowd, while several attendees stormed out or pointed some obscene gestures towards Case. Some fans have taken to the Internet to complain about Case’s attitude, but the singer has remained silent on the incident since the show ended. e-more@elmoremagazine.com The Who’s workload will be considerably lighter after 2015. The band have planned an extensive tour for that year, which marks their 50th anniversary as a group, but Pete Townshend has claimed that their Silver Anniversary tour will also be their last. Bandmate Roger Daltrey agreed with Townshend’s decision, saying that the realities of undertaking massive tours have become more and more problematic as the two have gotten older. This will not spell the end of The Who as a whole, though; Daltrey has gone on record as saying that the band will continue to work as a recording unit after their final tour. e-more@elmoremagazine.com Keeping the Blues Alive Award Recipients Announced Congratulations to the 2014 Keeping the Blues Alive Award recipients: Affiliated Organization: Crossroads Blues Society of Illinois - Rockford, Illinois Art: Cristen Craven Barnard - Senatobia, Mississippi Club: Kingston Mines - Chicago, Illinois Education: Tas Cru - Chaumont, New York Festival (International): Cazorla Blues Festival - Cazorla, Spain Festival (U.S.): Mississippi Valley Blues Festival - Davenport, Iowa Film, Television and Video: Stefan Grossman - Sparta, New Jersey Historical Preservation: George Mitchell - Fort Myers, Florida International: The Royal Mail Hotel - Goodna, Queensland, Australia Journalism: Gene Tomko - Lafayette, Louisiana Literature: Gerard Herzhaft - Lyon, France Manager: Marcia Weaver - Jackson, Mississippi Photography: Dick Waterman - Oxford, Mississippi Producer: Tom Hambridge - Nashville, Tennessee Promoter: Myron Mu - San Francisco, California Publicist: Frank Roszak - North Hills, California Radio (Commercial): Jerry Schaefer - East Islip, New York Radio (Public): Larry Lisk - St. Petersburg, Florida Record Label: Stony Plain Records - Edmonton, Alberta Special Committee Award: Blue Star Connection - Winter Park, Colorado The Blues Foundation will honor these 20 individuals and organizations during a recognition luncheon Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Downtown Memphis Doubletree. After spending several years in the band Honeytribe, and more recently the supergroup the Royal Southern Brotherhood, Devon has stuck out on his own for his first solo album, call Turquoise. Recorded in part at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis Tennessee, he’s crafted a very classic-sounding soul-rock album, full of honest lyrics, and supple guitar lines, that fit right in with those Allmans that have come before him.

This being said he has made his own path and found his own place in music. I have found it interesting to see the evolution of Devon's career over the last few years. This interview was from a while back and I thought it was an interesting point to listen to him talk about his expectations for 2012 and to now realize that they have already come to fruition. Devon talks about how he built a local following and expanded from there. With hard work and a lot of touring find out what has paid off the most for Devon! They are now starting on a world tour. http://royalsouthernbrotherhood.com/ Here is the wikipedia bio:) Devon Allman (born August 10, 1972) is a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter. He is also the founder and bandleader of Honeytribe, (also known as Devon Allman's Honeytribe). In addition to creating two albums and leading multiple tours across North America and Europe with Honeytribe, Devon has also contributed to several other musical recordings, including Vargas Blues Band and the A Song for My Father compilation album.
