In 2012, photographer Matika Wilbur sold everything in her Seattle apartment and set off to document the 562 federally recognized indigenous tribes in the country. Over a decade and hundreds of thousands of miles later, she released a book called “Project 562.” We talked to Wilbur in June 2023 about her journey, her book, and her mission to provide Native Americans images that are more “useful, truthful, and beautiful.” The Native American sketch comedy group, the 1491s, initially said "no" when the Oregon Shakespeare Festival approached them about writing a play. But eventually the five-member group relented, and tackled Native American history with humor in the play "Between Two Knees" in October of 2019. We listen back to a conversation from that time with Bobby Wilson, a member of the 1491s, and Robert Franklin, the Native American Student and Community Center at PSU, which sent students down to Ashland to see the play.

A new show written by the Indigenous comedy sketch troupe The 1491s provides a humorous look at one Native American family's history and experiences, from the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890 to activism of the 70s. We are joined by Bobby Wilson, writer and member of The 1491s, and Justin “Jud” Gauthier, who plays Larry in the show, to discuss "Between Two Knees," running at the Perelman Performing Arts Center through February 24.  

Historian Brenda J. Child stares at a buttery yellow sky framed by converging treelines reflected upon a lake. The scene is a painting by Duluth-based artist Jonathan Thunder and it's called “On the Grave of the Giant.” Below the sky's glow is a couple harvesting wild rice from a canoe. On the lake bottom are the skeletal remains of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.The painting is on public view for the first time as part of the new exhibition “Dreaming Our Futures: Ojibwe and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Artists and Knowledge Keepers” at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota. Child is a Northrop Professor of American Studies and former chair of the Departments of American Studies and the Department of American Indian Studies, co-curated the exhibition with gallery director Howard Oransky. It features paintings by 29 mid-century and contemporary Ojibwe and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Dakota and Lakota) artists from, or connected to, the region. It is the inaugural exhibition of the George Morrison Center for Indigenous Arts, an “interdepartmental study center to support the creation, presentation and interpretation of Indigenous art in all its forms.” Child is the founder of the new center, which was sparked by the success of the 2016 Nash gallery exhibition that she curated, “Singing Our History: People and Places of the Red Lake Nation.” The center is named in honor of the internationally renowned abstract expressionist, a member of the Grand Portage Ojibwe from Minnesota, who died in 2000. Morrison also taught art at the University of Minnesota in the 1970s and 1980s.“We tend to think in Minnesota, ‘Oh, George Morrison. He's like a local guy who's done well in the art world,'” Child says. “But he's a very important figure in American abstract expressionism.”Back in the gallery, Child is focused on that yellow sky. “What I really like about this work, and I wouldn't have known this unless Jonathan had told me,” Child begins. She pauses and walks to the opposite gallery wall, which features a string of paintings by the famous mid-century painter Patrick DesJarlait. Like Child and Thunder, DesJarlait was from the Red Lake Nation in northern Minnesota. DesJarlait is one of their heroes, she says.In addition to paintings like “Red Lake Fisherman” (also on view), DesJarlait is also famous for his 1950s redesign of the Land O'Lakes maiden, adding an Ojibwe floral pattern to her attire. “So Jonathan's nod to Patrick is the bright butter yellow that he used in this painting,” Child says. Over the phone from his Duluth studio, Thunder says Land O'Lakes discontinued DesJarlait's design, and the maiden, in 2020, soon before he began working on the painting in 2021.“With the yellow sky in that painting and the two points of land that come together, that's obviously a nod to the Land O'Lakes butter box,” Thunder says. “From what I understand, the two points of land that come together, they can be seen in Red Lake where the upper and lower Red Lake kind of join.”That year, Thunder had gone to see the Red Lake vista.“It was like seeing a cartoon come to life or something,” Thunder says. “It's very much a tribally significant image with or without the butter maiden.”Thunder says the painting was also inspired by the time when he and his wife decided to learn how to harvest wild rice around Walker, Minn. In the painting, a pipeline takes the shape of a tentacle reaching into the canoe above the watery grave of Bunyan and Babe.“At the time, the Line Three protests were happening across Minnesota and I was starting to see some of the division it was creating in the communities there,” Thunder explains. ”You see statues of Paul Bunyan kind of littered throughout the landscape, which is significant of a time when they were coming through clearing forests. Paul Bunyan was the noble face of that cause. In the wake of all that, it's nice to see that people can still go out and rice and practice those traditional ways.”Thunder says he's excited to be placed in the gallery next to DesJarlait, an artist “I've seen my whole life.” He adds that, when he was growing up in the Twin Cities, he used to play basketball at the Minneapolis American Indian Center. It was there he discovered the 94-foot-long wood mural “Turning the Feather Around” that Morrison created in 1974 (and which was recently restored and reinstalled).“That's a huge development for the campus,” Thunder says of the new center.“Dreaming Our Futures” is a web of these overt and covert dialogues and relationships between artworks, artists and generations.On view, of course, are the abstracted rainbow-colored canvases of Morrison himself, as well as the paintings of other blue chip artists such as Dyani White Hawk, Frank Big Bear, Jim Denomie, Oscar Howe and Andrea Carlson.“This exhibit shows the history of American Indian art, fine art, in the United States and where it's been in the last half-century, especially with Howe, Morrison and DesJarlait,” Child explains.“Dreaming Our Futures” acts as an important marker in time, too: Fifty years ago, Morrison, DesJarlait and Howe participated in an exhibition of contemporary Indian painting in Washington, D.C.Child says that “Dreaming Our Futures” also shows how contemporary artists “have been very influenced by those foundational figures.”These include artists like Thunder and Dakota artist Holly Young, of Bismarck, N.D. Young uses the mediums of beadwork, quillwork, and ledger art, an art form that originated in cave and hide painting that has evolved to also use parchment and actual historical “ledger” documents as a canvas. Young also created the illustration for the cover of “The Seed Keeper,” the 2021 novel by Minnesota Native writer Diane Wilson, the wife of Denomie. Denomie died in 2022. Wilson wrote an essay, “Jim Denomie at Home,” for the exhibition catalog.Four of Young's ledger-style watercolor paintings are on view, featuring Native women dressed in a combination of historical regalia and contemporary attire.“A lot of what I draw is kind of based off of real life,” Young says. “I enjoy the look of the old things, but I'm also living in today's world as a contemporary artist.”Young is self-taught. Many of her artist influences — White Hawk, Bobby Wilson, Francis J. Yellow, Thomasina TopBear — have work on display in the same room. The ledger art of Yellow, a Minneapolis-based Lakota artist who died in August, hangs right next to Young's.“He was also somebody that I looked up to as a ledger artist. His work was very emotional,” Young says. “I always wanted to meet him, and I've been in the Minnesota area over the years, but we never crossed paths.”Flanking the other side of her paintings is a large spray-painted canvas by TopBear. In 2022, Young and TopBear painted a mural together in Young's hometown of Fort Yates, S.D.“I really gravitate towards Thomasina's work,” Young says. “She does a lot of nature-inspired work: Flowers, the prairie and the plant helpers, as I call them, like insects and bugs, things that I really enjoy myself.”In another room, three paintings by St. Paul figurative painter and muralist Steven Premo, of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, hang facing three surrealist and spiritual paintings by fellow Ojibwe artist Joe Geshick, who died in 2009. Premo is the husband of Child, and was a good friend of Geshick, she says. Premo inherited Geshick's easel, which Child says will be on display with a list of artists who have died in recent years. Another Minnesota Native author, Louise Erdrich, will be speaking about Geshick's art at the gallery on Feb. 4.“Each of these individuals takes their place in a lineage of Indigenous painters that stretches back centuries,” Oransky, the gallery director and curator writes in his essay, “A Vast Field of Feathers,” for the exhibition catalog. He also points to the Jeffers Petroglyphs, the 7,000-year-old sacred rock carvings Native people made in southwestern Minnesota.“This exhibition of paintings, like all the exhibitions that came before it and will come after it, beautifully and forcefully demonstrates that the need for drawn and painted images is a universal need,” Oransky writes.At the end of a gallery tour, Child pauses again, pondering the timing of the exhibition. The pandemic set back its original opening date years.“We need to show American Indian art every year and all the time,” Child says. ”But thinking as I do, as a historian, I've been thinking about the anniversary of American Indian citizenship in the United States 100 years ago.”President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act on June 2, 1924. Morrison, Howe and DesJarlait were all born years before they were legal citizens of the U.S.They were working in a different era, Child says. “And that's why I particularly wanted to include these figures like Oscar Howe, Patrick Desjarlait and George Morrison in the exhibit.” There will be “Dreaming Our Futures: Art and American Indian Citizenship, 1924 – 2024” panel discussions Feb. 2 at the Regis Center for Art.“Dreaming Our Futures” runs through March 16. The opening reception is Feb. 3 at the Regis Center for Art. Speakers include Child, Erdrich, Wilson, Minnesota Museum of Art executive director Kate Beane and Harvard professor Christopher Pexa.On Feb. 15, Patricia Marroquin Norby, the inaugural associate curator of Native American art at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, will read her catalog essay “Painting Medicine: George Morrison's Big Water Magic.”On March 14, artist Fern Cloud will present “The Spirit of My People: Traditional Dakota Hide Painting.”

It's the Friday news roundup! One city councilor wants to update the zoning code for some residential properties, a new record number of Pennsylvanians are enrolled in SNAP, and there's a bill in our state legislature that would require kids to learn cursive writing. We're comparing our handwritten notes, plus diving deep into the history and lore of Punxsutawney Phil. We always cite our sources: Pittsburgh City Council person Bobby Wilson introduced legislation that would update the city's zoning code. We've previously chatted on the pod about how the city's zoning rules can sometimes throw a wrench in development.  There's a record number of Pennsylvanians enrolled in SNAP.  In 2022, the SNAP income eligibility requirements were raised, and the PA Department of Human Services lists the maximum gross monthly income by household size. You can apply for SNAP benefits online through COMPASS or find a county assistance office near you.  Organizations like Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and Just Harvest also offer help with filling out SNAP applications and more. There's a bill in the state legislature that would require PA schools to teach cursive writing. Instead of having Phil predict the weather with his shadow, PETA suggested using a coin flip this year. In the past, they've also offered alternatives like an animatronic groundhog or even having someone wear a groundhog costume and live in Phil's enclosure. For our last show of the year we want to bring you some of our favorite stories, and some of the top stories of 2023. Minnesota Now always brings you the latest headlines and thoughtful conversation with Minnesotans across the state. Each member of the Minnesota Now team picked a top headline or favorite story. Twin Cities Marathon cancellationOne of the top stories of 2023 was the cancellation of the Twin Cities Marathon. It was Oct. 1, we had record breaking heat. It's only the second time it's ever been canceled in it's four decades. The decision was a talker, whether or not you were a runner. Covering it on the show is an example of what we do on Minnesota Now, it was a story across many angles: community, fitness and global warming. Marijuana legalizationAnother top headline of 2023 was undoubtably the legalization of marijuana. From the first day of legalization on Aug. 1, and since then, the only place able to legally sell cannabis is tribal reservations. We took a look back to the first days of legalization, where there was a rush of people at the White Earth Nation waiting to get their hands on weed. End-of-life billAn end-of-life bill that didn't get a hearing in the 2023 legislative session will be re-introduced during the 2024 session. It's a bill that would allow people of sound mind, with a terminal illness, to choose the time of their death with a physician-prescribed dose of lethal medication. In June, we had a conversation with an end-of-life doula. It was one of our most read stories online this year, and it was a thoughtful conversation about her mother's death. Cheryl Hauser, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019, decided to end her life, on her terms, before the worst of the disease took effect. To do that, she planned to stop eating and drinking.It's a process known as V-SED, which stands for “voluntarily stopping eating and drinking.” Hauser died on June 2 at the age of 76 with her family and caregivers making sure she was comfortable and without pain or anxiety.Unionization in the nonprofit sectorUnion organizers on the national level have called summer of 2023 “Hot Labor Summer.” Hollywood writers went on strike, actors joined them in July. By fall, the United Auto Workers were on strike nationwide. New unions formed this year too, and not just at private companies. In Minnesota, newly unionized workers include doctors with Allina Health, University of Minnesota graduate students, and climate advocated with MN350 — all are nonprofits. ‘Reservation Dogs' FX's hit show “Reservation Dogs” aired its final season in 2023. And the show has some Minnesota connections. Actor Dallas Goldtooth, and producers and writers Migizi Pensoneau and Bobby Wilson all work on the show. They also all hail from Indigenous communities in Minnesota and happen to be best friends. We take you back to an insightful and comedic conversation on how the three of them are breaking barriers.

FX's hit show “Reservation Dogs” is coming to a close this week but in its three seasons it has been a breakthrough for Native representation in mainstream media. That's thanks, in part, to creatives who are members of Indigenous communities in Minnesota. Dallas Goldtooth, Migizi Pensoneau and Bobby Wilson, who are actors, writers and producers on the show, all hail from Dakota and Ojibwe communities in Minnesota, urban and rural. They're also all close friends and collaborators who have performed together for more than decade in the comedy group The 1491s. They spoke to Minnesota Now host Cathy Wurzer.Fans can see Wilson on Oct. 2 at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, where he will host an artist talk at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall. Note: This interview took place during the writer's strike, so the three did not talk about the show specifically. You lampoon Indian stereotypes fostered by the dominant culture and you are dead-on funny. For folks that are not familiar, describe Indian humor.Migizi Pensoneau: I think it's just humor. Indian humor is just people's humor. Bobby and I were just talking about this earlier today — because Indian country is so wide and vast, our experiences growing up in Minnesota are very different than the experiences we have written in “Reservation Dogs.” A part of that though, the reason why there is a connection all across Indian country is really we all have a similar relationship to white America … we have a lot of shared experiences with colonization in this country. So a lot of that is kind of, sardonic, Black humor, laughing in the face of genocide — that whole thing.Bobby Wilson: I shouldn't call it always in opposition to, but it is often critical of the interactions with non-Indigenous people, as Migizi said, in colonization and things around that.How did growing up in Minnesota play into your comedy, in your storytelling or your experiences? Dallas Goldtooth: I claim that I grew up both on the south side of Minneapolis during the summers with my dad and Migizi and everything, but in the school year, I lived down in southwest Minnesota. A lot of our comedy is heavily influenced by how we interact with the greater settler society.I grew up around farm kids. It was a bunch of Indians surrounded by a bunch of white farm kids in southwest Minnesota and the constant interaction with “Minnesota Nice” and how uncomfortable white folks get in Minnesota about certain issues is hilarious to me. I think that it has influenced me and has encouraged me to always be willing to push the buttons because I imagine what would make a white Lutheran in central Minnesota uncomfortable and let's go for that.What do you mean by that?Dallas Goldtooth: Having grown up in Minnesota, I feel like there's a certain expectation about what can be talked about in the public space and what shouldn't be talked about. We as Native people in Minnesota are on the fringes as it is. Whether we're invisible or we're the tourist icons that people like to go visit up north for their summer cottages, either way, we're not seen as a part of that mainstream and so I feel like I have greater liberties to critique, make fun or tease the culture that I'm surrounded by. Bobby Wilson: This is why I love the creative consortium that the three of us have — additionally with some of our other friends who aren't from Minnesota — is the differences in the spaces we grew up in. For me, I grew up around the Twin Cities, bounced around a lot of shelters, lived in a lot of people's basements on some air mattresses, you know.My interactions with white settler society across the Twin Cities has predominantly been systemic. I was sentenced to a boy's home for a couple of years and I had the privilege of writing about it for “Reservation Dogs” season two. That Minnesota nice thing is always a — I hate it. I hate it so very much because I always associate it with a state trooper beating my face in and then kind of blaming me for it and being like, well, you know, “I'm not the bad guy here.” And simultaneously also just as an artist working within a lot of the art spaces around the Twin Cities, Juxtaposition Arts, COMPAS arts, over most of my youth — it really influenced sort of the way that I can interact with it. Dallas Goldtooth: I never realized this, but between the three of us we have a commonality of having lived in Minneapolis or the Twin Cities area and we have family who lives there. I predominantly grew up in southwest Minnesota, Migizi is northern Minnesota, Bobby is in the Twin Cities. We all pull from many different references, right? So it's I think that's the advantage of all of us. Like we really do represent Minnesota. You guys are welcome. You're welcome, Minnesota.Whether it's for your personally or for your community or for your society, what are some of those barriers you think you guys have broken?Migizi Pensoneau: We've done it together as a group and that's one of the interesting things. So we have the two that aren't from Minnesota in our group, they are from Oklahoma … but we've managed to stick together as friends and so far … we'll see what happens, talk to us in a couple of years. But we've managed to continue to work together in a way that's incredibly positive. And a lot of that, especially as we're getting into like our “Reservation Dogs” stuff these last few years, a lot of this was led by our friend Sterlin Harjo. We did it all the time with like, you know, prayers in the morning, prayers before we started songs, like we did everything in the ways that we were sort of taught and some of those things that sort of bring us together as Indian people are some of these traditions, like walking forward in the work that we do in a thoughtful and spiritual way.I don't know that anybody else is doing the same thing, at least to that sort of level. What I'm saying is that we are spiritually better than everybody else. And we've broken that barrier pretty hard. But no, I mean, we've tried to maintain spiritual and cultural integrity in everything that we do. We joke around all the time, but we are absolutely serious about making sure that the work that we put out in the world is thoughtful and is not flippant, even though, you know, the stuff we say off the cuff definitely is. But the things that we deal with, both in our sketches and in the work that we do on “Reservation Dogs,” is very heavy and there are people that are, you know, some of the subject matter is really intense and we don't go into that lightly. So having that sort of cultural and spiritual grounding to make sure that carries across through all of what we do, I don't know anybody else that does that … we've maintained our integrity in the work that we do.Dallas, do you agree with your friend, Migizi?Dallas Goldtooth: Yes, I do. I think that maybe one other aspect is that through the process of writing “Reservation Dogs” and also working on other projects now, we've broken that barrier of, like, we've been told that one, in many ways, whether it's direct or indirect, that our stories as Native people don't matter.I think that we as writers are breaking that barrier, saying, no, Native stories told by Native people, acted by Native actors and actresses not only have impact for us as community, but are meaningful to everybody. People really can enjoy them and that they are worthy of investment and worthy of support.Growing up in a dominant culture, we're often taught that, hey, you have to change your ways to fit to the mold that is the mainstream, that is colonization. What we're trying to do is say, I was gonna use a four-letter word, a sacred four-letter word, and I'm not gonna say it, but F that, you know, we are gonna be doing it on our own, in our own terms. And has maybe even, it has a greater impact than anything that could else be said.What have you heard from folks both inside and outside the Native community about the impact your work is having?Bobby Wilson: I've heard a lot of really fantastic positive reception, all the stuff that we've been doing … I think it is really quality work. And putting it on like a larger platform, really an international platform. I mean, I've got a homie in Germany that texted me that he was watching “Reservation Dogs” with his family and I was like, God dang, you know? Like, that's wild, it's really fantastic.I also love hearing folks who haven't watched the show at all and just tell me that, you know, it's on the list. I get that a lot. ‘Ah, I heard really good things about that.' So people are hearing good things. The most important thing for me is if we're all satisfied with the work. I think probably every artist feels that way, though. People keep telling us it's really great and I love that, I love to hear it. But, you know, we're always trying to hold ourselves to as high a standard as possible.This might be a stupid question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. When will you guys know you've made it?Migizi Pensoneau: Here's what I know, here's how I know that I've probably made it enough, is that my own community up in Red Lake hasn't asked me to come be a part of anything yet. And I think if they ever ask me to come be a part of everything and to like come and speak to the youth up there, I will know then that I've peaked and I'm past my prime, that I'm obsolete. Your own community should not be asking you to do anything. Right now I'm hated enough and that's fine. Do you have any worries on what's next for Indigenous representation after the SAG-AFTRA strike ends? Bobby Wilson: I mean, for me, I was worried about it before it even started, you know? I hate to break the momentum but it took like 150 damn years since the invention of the camera to give Indians a TV show. I'm always worried about it but I think we have to be. There's still stuff coming out that's written by non-Native people, that's acted by non-Native people, that's supposedly about us. There's always a space for it and for us to go in there and to do our own work together and also collaborate with all the other amazing, phenomenal Indigenous talent. There's some really amazing people working on stuff.Dallas Goldtooth: No matter what, we're still part of a colonial project. We gotta remain vigilant at all times. Minnesota may change the name of Sibley Park, but they're still going to do some racist stuff. And so we're always going to be on the edge.I have a worry that the studios are gonna say “hey, we don't have enough money as much as we did before because we got to pay you guys a living wage now,” and oftentimes it's those on the margins, right, the Indigenous folks, Black folks, other communities of color who end up getting the cut first. So that's the worry I got. But I believe that we've proven that we can tell good stories that people are invested in and I have a lot of faith in them.

Bobby “Dues” Wilson is a Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota artist, dad, and comedian based in Phoenix, Arizona. Bobby was born and raised in the Twin Cities, back when you could still smoke at Ember's Family Restaurant. Bobby's family bounced around motels, apartments, Powwows and shelters through his childhood but there's an olde saying amongst the Siouxan nations: shit happens. Wilson attended the Creative Arts High School where his interests in painting and poetry were heavily encouraged. He participated in youth art programs COMPAS arts in St. Paul, then rode the 16 (94 if you're cashy) to Minneapolis where he trained mural painting like a champ under Roger and Peyton at Juxtaposition Arts. He painted several murals around the Twin Cities and enough graffiti to catch a couple cases. His visual art work can still be seen at the Minnesota Historical Society (I think) and the Chippewa Tribes building on Franklin.  After some heavy life changes that we won't get into it here (go watch Smoke Signals or something), Bobby found himself alongside the 1491s comedy troupe, traveling all accrosst Indian Country making fun of himself for money. Now Bobby works as a writer/producer on television series like Rutherford Falls, Echo (some MCU stuff?), and the Peabody award winning series, Reservation Dogs. He lives with his family, surrounded by the O'odham nations and urban Navajos who make really good tortillas! Did you know O'odham homies call frybread, “popovers?!” What even is that?!

It took a few years, as it typically does for players going through the minor league system, before Wilson got the call he was waiting for since he was a kid. This came in 2008 and Wilson was playing for the Angels' Triple-A team, the Salt Lake Bees. He'd gotten off to a sensational start with the Bees, hitting .339 and driving in 12 runs in just 16 games. While Wilson's career stats are not earth-shattering he clearly earned a reputation over the years as somebody teams could count on when needed. Three of the teams he played for had enough confidence in him to bring him back for a second go-round. That reputation brought him to his current job with the Rangers, who he played for twice. He was hired as the catching coordinator in October 2020 after a year as a manager in their farm system. In his new capacity, he travels with the team and also keeps in contact with catchers in the farm system to make sure everybody's techniques and "standards" are spot on with what the club expects.
