Over the last 30 years, there has been an exponential growth of Indigenous media and Indigenous media makers, especially here in Canada which has one of the largest repositories of Indigenous media. However, the road to get here hasn't been easy. Indigenous filmmakers, producers, and artists have had to navigate the complex and often unfriendly terrain of Canadian media institutions and media production companies. Their negotiations -- and struggles -- have helped make space for a generation of Indigenous media-makers who are increasingly making shows and films on their terms, with their ideas.Karrmen Crey who is Stó:lō from Cheam First Nation, is an associate professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and the author of “Producing Sovereignty: The Rise of Indigenous Media in Canada.” In this special  episode, recorded on-site with an audience in Vancouver at Iron Dog books, Karrmen speaks with Vinita about  the ways  Indigenous creators are using humour along with a sharp critique of pop culture to show just how different the world looks when decision-making power over how stories get told shifts and Indigenous media makers take control. This episode was produced in front of a live audience at Iron Dog Books in Vancouver, in partnership with Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology and the Amplify Podcast Network. A show 'For the People': New Guthrie play focuses on Minneapolis' Native Community

North Star Journey

As part of its 61st season, The Guthrie Theater has premiered a play spotlighting the Twin Cities Native American community. For members of the community, it's an exciting moment.  “I'm still processing it, quite frankly,” said comedian and nonprofit organizer Trish Cook about “For the People,” now playing. “Folks are really buzzing about it.” Cook, who is Anishinaabe and lives in St. Paul, has seen the show multiple times.  “I think it kind of gives non-Natives maybe just a little peek into our communities,” Cook said, praising the show for showcasing the diversity of Minnesota's Indigenous community.  “For the People” was written by Larissa FastHorse and Ty Defoe. The show first began as an idea in 2019, when the Guthrie approached FastHorse and Defoe to create a show.  “We ended up centering on Franklin Avenue, which is a very well-known, well-beloved avenue,” FastHorse said. Franklin Avenue was the birthplace of the American Indian Movement and remains a hub of Native American arts, culture and activism. FastHorse, who hails from the Sicangu Lakota Nation, and Defoe, with both Oneida and Ojibwe heritage, decided to crowdsource the story directly from the community they intended to portray in their show. Defoe recalls hosting events during the harsh Minnesota winter of 2019 to gather stories and feedback for the writing. “We talked to so many different people, just asking questions in a gathering-like phase,” Defoe recalled. They visited people up and down Franklin Avenue. “We even went to powwows that were a little bit off of Franklin Avenue.”  By 2021, the show started to take form. “For the People” follows April Dakota, a Native woman who returns to Minneapolis after time spent away seeing the world, intending to open a Wellness Center.April quickly becomes entangled in the avenue's politics, navigating challenges like grant funding, gentrification and questions about her “Native” authenticity. Although FastHorse and Defoe had different upbringings, they both relate to April's journey to understand her Native identity. “[I'm from] the Sicangu Lakota Nation in South Dakota and I grew up being adopted out very young, to a white family,” FastHorse said. “I had to go through a kind of a reclaiming of culture. As I was growing up in my late teens ... now, I call myself a bridge.” Defoe grew up with lots of connections to his Anishinaabe heritage and grew up speaking Anishinaabe.  “There was a journey about how to figure out how to belong and what belonging meant as like a modern-day Indigenous person,” Defoe said.  Local connections Aside from nationally known actors, like Wes Studi of “Dances with Wolves” and “The Last of the Mohicans,” “For the People” includes notable local actors, including Ernest Briggs, artistic director of the Minnesota-based Turtle Theater Collective, which focuses on Native storytelling.   Another local actor, Adrienne Zimiga-January, plays a commissioner.  “She's kind of like the boss lady. She reminds me of a lot of strong female women in my head that I've had in my life, most particularly my aunt,” Zimiga-January said.   She points to other Native stories being told to a wider audience, like “Reservation Dogs” and “Rutherford Falls,” as part of a large, empowering Native storytelling renaissance.   As a Lakota woman, “For the People” has a special place for her.  “To have a story like this, especially when you're right here on Native land. It is a huge thing for Native people here in the Twin Cities. For the Dakhóta Oyáte, it's huge here.” The future of Native stories According to the Guthrie, “For the People” is its first mainstage production written “by Native playwrights, featuring Native voices.” The theater's commitment to Native stories found its recent momentum in the 2016-2017 season, when Defoe and FastHorse's consulting company Indigenous Direction, was brought on to create a show in the Guthrie's Dowling studio.  Later, the theater created a Native Advisory Council to consult on decisions being made about the shows they would program for future seasons.  “I know there have been efforts in the past to make this connection between the local Native community,” said Roya Taylor, a former member of the Guthrie's Native Advisory Council and a local theater and voice-over artist. “But for some reason, you know, it just didn't seem like the timing was there or something was not right about the Guthrie's mindset.” Though Taylor has yet to see the final product of “For the People,” she was previously involved with workshops for the show, long before it even had a title.  Taylor, an enrolled Pawnee and Choctaw, applauds the Guthrie's move toward Native storytelling as part of its future. “What I would like to see is more Native young people, if we can figure out a way for them to take advantage of many of the educational offerings that the Guthrie utilizes,” said Taylor.  “We've had many years of creative, talented people that haven't gotten to share their voice, but they are now,” Cook shared, noting the bittersweet feeling.  “It's also exciting to hear from people — young folks and others who now want to share their stories or share their talents … I'm excited to see how it grows.” “For the People” runs until Nov. 12.

Musing with Michael (Mike) Schur is a bit like playing chess with Garry Kasparov. No matter what conversational move you make, he has a counter that will likely stun you. No wonder his book is called How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question… In this episode, host Charlie Bresler is musing with Michael Schur. Creator of the critically acclaimed NBC comedy The Good Place, co-creator on Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn 99, and Rutherford Falls, writer on The Office and Saturday Night Live, Michael has a long history of being both very smart and very funny. Events in young adulthood led him to read philosophy as a way of understanding himself and those around him. In particular, a seemingly very minor incident that got a bit out of control caused Michael to question the morality of what he was doing.  Fortunately for all of us, this spiraling minor incident ultimately led to the television show The Good Place, a show that tackles the question of how we judge if a life has been “good” or “bad.”  Moral dilemmas also produced the book How to Be Perfect. In his book, Michael talks about the principle of umbuntu, a concept in many parts of Africa that is described as the philosophy of “I am because you are.”  “Our happiness depends on the happiness of others and vice versa,” he explains. And in many ways, he says, it's almost the opposite of one of the central precepts here in the west: “I think therefore I am.” It's not a commonly known idea here in the west, but, says Michael, it might be an antidote to some of the selfishness that individualism often leads to. Bobby “Dues” Wilson is a Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota artist, dad, and comedian based in Phoenix, Arizona. Bobby was born and raised in the Twin Cities, back when you could still smoke at Ember's Family Restaurant. Bobby's family bounced around motels, apartments, Powwows and shelters through his childhood but there's an olde saying amongst the Siouxan nations: shit happens. Wilson attended the Creative Arts High School where his interests in painting and poetry were heavily encouraged. He participated in youth art programs COMPAS arts in St. Paul, then rode the 16 (94 if you're cashy) to Minneapolis where he trained mural painting like a champ under Roger and Peyton at Juxtaposition Arts. He painted several murals around the Twin Cities and enough graffiti to catch a couple cases. His visual art work can still be seen at the Minnesota Historical Society (I think) and the Chippewa Tribes building on Franklin.  After some heavy life changes that we won't get into it here (go watch Smoke Signals or something), Bobby found himself alongside the 1491s comedy troupe, traveling all accrosst Indian Country making fun of himself for money. Now Bobby works as a writer/producer on television series like Rutherford Falls, Echo (some MCU stuff?), and the Peabody award winning series, Reservation Dogs. He lives with his family, surrounded by the O'odham nations and urban Navajos who make really good tortillas! Did you know O'odham homies call frybread, “popovers?!” What even is that?!

Dr. Liza Black shares her insights about how depictions of Native Americans in media, such as film and television, affect Indigenous peoples and communities. She underscores the impacts of misrepresentations and lack of understanding Native Americans by drawing connections between her first book Picturing Indians: Native Americans in Film, 1941-1960 (2020) and her manuscript in-progress "How to Get Away with Murder," which is a transnational history of missing and murdered Indigenous women.Dr. Black is a citizen of Cherokee Nation and an Associate Professor of Native American and Indigenous Studies and history at Indiana University. She examines the motivations of territory and the intersections of representation and violence. Dr. Black developed a lifelong interest in studying Native identity and struggle and in advocating for protecting Native people from violence and exploitation. In "Native TV in 2021: Putting the I in BIPOC," Dr. Black was featured in Perspectives on History discussing the recent surge of Native-centered television representation in Rutherford Falls and Reservation Dogs. Her work has appeared in more than 20 academic and non-academic outlets.Suggested References:Killers of the Flower Moonhttps://osagenews.org/review-killers-of-the-flower-moon-and-the-strength-of-indigenous-women/https://osagenews.org/martin-scorsese-i-take-this-film-as-an-offering-to-the-osage-people-and-from-our-hearts/Here is the "warrior cry" from William Billeau who is Osage at the Cannes Film Festival screening: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8d1kFBm/Dr. Liza Black's Author Site: https://blackli0.wixsite.com/picturingindians/past-media

All episodes of the first season are available for streaming on AMC+.But this series isn't alone this summer in presenting Native Americans in a more authentic way. "Rutherford Falls" and "Reservation Dogs" are both returning for second seasons.Last year, UCLA's Hollywood Diversity Report found that indigenous people made up less than one percent of acting roles. Later in the show, they discuss the impact of having Brittney Griner out of the league and Amira recommends WNBA players to watch.  In Slate Plus, the fascinating (and feminist!) history of cheerleaders.  Recommendations: Amira: Formula 1 racing, including Netflix's Formula 1: Drive to Survive and F1 romance novels like the Fast and Hard series.  Cheyna: Jana Schmieding for her roles on Hulu's Reservation Dogs and Peacock's Rutherford Falls.    Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Shannon Palus and Alicia Montgomery. The Peacock comedy Rutherford Falls is now back for its second season, and makes for a great summer binge watch. Co-created by Mike Schur, and starring Ed Helms (also a co-creator), the series follows a conflict over a historical statue in a small town. But what really sets it apart is that it centers several Native American characters, and its third co-creator, Sierra Teller Ornelas, is TV's first Native American showrunner. In this encore episode, we revisit our conversation about the first season.

Fill a dish with hard candies for Dave Chen, who's back after a long absence to talk about the somewhat mysterious appeal of FX's aging-spy-vs.-spy drama, The Old Man. Does Sarah think it needs more process-y bits? Does the excellent acting by Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and their younger versions make up for long nobody-talks-like-that passages of abstraction? And are Dave and Carol the real heroes? Later, we went Around The Dial with Rutherford Falls, RHONJ, and Players before Tara tried to convert us to her team with a sixth-season Seinfeld. In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up at 3:15am and clean your house. Or something.
