Big shifts are happening across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie — and this episode dives straight into what's coming and what it actually means on the ground. We unpack the approved Broadmeadow masterplan (20,000+ homes, mixed-use precinct, high-rise living), the reality of high-speed rail, and how infrastructure like this could completely reshape how people live, work, and invest along the east coast. From second CBD potential to connectivity into Sydney, we break down how this isn't just development — it's long-term transformation. We also touch on:* Light rail expansion and what's realistic* Major projects like Marketown and Honeysuckle* The impact of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on construction timelines* Why Newcastle is becoming one of the most liveable and investable cities in AustraliaSimple takeaway — Newcastle isn't the same city it was 10 years ago… and it won't be the same again in the next 10.
Kris Lees was thirty three years old when his father Max passed away in 2003. He'd been training a handful of horses in his own right while working as stable foreman for his very respected trainer/dad. He was left reeling when a sudden illness claimed Max's life at just 63 years of age. Kris made the instant decision to carry on where the multiple Gr 1 trainer had left off. The team totalled 50 horses and Kris was humbled to learn that almost every existing client had decided to leave their horses exactly where they were. Twenty three years on Kris has established a stellar training record and boasts some amazing season by season statistics. It's seven years since Lees Jnr has been a guest on this podcast and it's high time we invited him back. The trainer says very few call him by his birth name of Kristen. He talks about his horse numbers at Newcastle and on the Gold Coast with acknowledgement of the people who look after his Queensland operation. Kris is justifiably proud of his training stats over more than two decades. He takes us back to early days when he went to work for his father after getting an exemption from school. He talks of an ambition to be a bookmaker and his friendship with neighbour Ray Wallace, one of Newcastle's most astute trainers. Kris looks back on his decision to train a few horses in his own name while working for his father. He remembers Max's sudden illness and a premature passing that would deeply sadden the racing world. Lees Jnr speaks with great affection of the “iron gelding” County Tyrone who provided his first Gr 1 win. By an eerie coincidence the horse had been Max Lees' final Gr 1 winner. He looks back on the privilege of being given a $1.5 million dollar filly very early in his training career. Kris would win seven races including three Gr 1's with the star filly Samantha Miss. He talks of the mare's subsequent stud career and reviews the racetrack deeds of her six foals. He looks back on the surprise phone call from NZ advising him that a hugely talented mare was on her way across the Tasman. He was horrified to see her fall in a race at Ellerslie before being sent to Australia. Lucia Valentina reached dizzy heights for her Aussie trainer. Kris doesn't hide his affection for the evergreen Le Romain whose 7 wins and 18 placings netted $4.3 million dollars. The trainer pays tribute to Gr 1 winners like In Her Time, Sense Of Occasion, Vitesse Dane, Amokura, and Kalapour. He talks of his winning associations with father-son jockeys Andrew and Dylan Gibbons. Kris looks back on his extraordinary record in the Provincial Championship Series since its inception in 2015. He's qualified a whopping 56 horses for 11 Finals for five winners and seven placegetters. Kris says you don't need a champion to accumulate mind boggling prize money. He talks of two big earning stable warriors. The trainer talks about the gradual expansion of his Broadmeadow training base. He discusses the importance of barrier trials in the modern racing world. Kris talks about the selection of jockeys for his huge number of runners. He pays tribute to wife Christie, daughter Emerson, and sons Marshall and Manning. A laid back chat with one of Australia's best horse trainers.

We started off with the F3 Derby, and our overall impressions of the game. Discussion moved to the disappointing performance of the team after a solid start and how the game then unfolded. We delved into the goals, before dissecting one of the most ridiculous VAR incidents in football. We then ended up on the penalty miss and the long ball upfield from which they scored the winning goal. Then we moved on to a much happier experience against the Victory. We gave our thoughts on the lineup and spent most of the remainder of the episode waxing lyrical about Alex Badolato. The goals, the skills, the goals and the goals. And how we hope to be able to keep him for at least the season before someone steals him. Lastly, we finished the episode by chatting about Sydney FC and giving our predictions for the game, the rest of the fixtures in Round 3 and then a quick chat about paper planes and $25k. A shipment of bricks is being blamed for the spread of Red Imported Fire Ants into Central Queensland. Nests have been detected at five mine sites in Bowen's Basin. It comes six weeks after a fire ant nest was uncovered at a mine site in Broadmeadow - the region's first detection. Rural Reporter Toby Gough spoke with The Invasive Species Council's Reece Pianta, who warns further spread is likely.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Talk started with a great crowd and result in the Matildas friendly against Korea in Newcastle, and fantastic news that Dr Emma is now engaged!! Much congratulations to the happy couple Then we moved onto the games that took place while we have been off (again!!) starting with a smash-and-grab away win vs City, a smashing at home against WU and dropping points against Macarthur which nearly made Furns smash his TV. We all gave our opinions on those games and whether minimal changes to the starting lineups may have contributed to some of the performances. Chat then moved on to the home loss against Phoenix. We discussed the starting lineup, performances, goals, and flashpoints including a yellow card for simulation to Kota despite having clearly been tripped by a defender. We also discussed whether we are still a realistic chance of making the finals. Then we talked about our recent Jets CEO appointment Tain Drinkwater who arrives with an impressive CV and local knowledge. A bit of time was spent delving into the news around Rob Stanton leaving at the end of the season, some of the possible reasons and rumours behind why, and who might come in to replace him. To wrap things up we previewed Saturday’s F3 Derby for the Men and gave our predictions for the rest of Round 26. Want to join us on the podcast? Would you like to write articles for the website? We also talked over some of the performances of the players and subs and some stats from the game. Unfortunately as we were on a time constraint we were unable to provide much more than a score on the Women vs Wanderers. There is no ALW match this weekend. Ceri brings together three artists who transformed the Green Man Festival into a magical artistic playground. Lexi Zelda Stevens, Megan Broadmeadow, and Angela Davies share their experiences of creating ambitious installations in challenging outdoor environments. From holographic fans in the woods to midnight performances on rafts, they reveal the intricate dance of artistic vision, technical expertise, and weather management. The trio and Ceri give practical advice and inspiration about producing large scale public art and talk about the importance of building strong support teams. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lexi believes the key to successful festival art programming is having meticulous contingency plans while giving artists complete creative freedom to lead their vision Megan discovered that having triple the expected technical support proved crucial when personal emergencies arose during installation of her holographic installation Transforming her gallery work for an outdoor festival context opened up new possibilities for Angela's performance and audience engagement. Producing festival art requires creating a calm, supportive environment amid chaos, focusing on safety while letting artists maintain creative control. Festival audiences interact with art differently than gallery visitors - some prefer to simply observe, while others want to understand the technical details. Angela realised that staging work next to water created unexpected opportunities for reflection, both literally and metaphorically, in her practice. Lexi's experience showed her that the best commissioned work comes from trusting artists who haven't worked outdoors before rather than playing it safe. Through her midnight performance, Angela discovered that festivals can create intimate, quiet moments of connection even within a busy event environment. BEST MOMENTS "Being a producer is kind of like saying sorry and thank you a lot. And maybe I hear you as well in there." "Don't work alone. You're going to need some friends. You're going to need support. Use people's expertise." "I was laying on this body of water where the film was projecting kind of beyond me... it was quite magical." "Creating imagery that transcends the festival... and forgetting that you're even at a festival, that was really powerful." "Just dream big" "Don't try and make the art.
