Presenter, podcaster, and author (and sometimes ultramarathon runner) Brodie Kane spills about facing redundancy at the outset of a pandemic—with a 700k mortgage. What seemed like a huge setback pushed her to go out on her own, joining forces with her Mum financially, and even leading to hosting a new show about co-ownership in NZ’s brutal housing market. “I'm 38, a single woman. I have to be in charge of making sure that I can secure a future for myself, if I'm going to be doing it on my own… so that I can go and be one of those fabulous ladies, you know, with a gin at midday like ‘la dee dah’.” More Than Money is a series exploring the wealth choices that change us. Each week BusinessDesk and the NZ Herald's Cooking the Books podcast tackles a different money problem. Today, it's how to make self-employed life work for you. Hosted by Frances Cook. It's a dream for many people – to start your own business, and be your own boss. In an ideal world it allows you to focus on the projects that you find most fulfilling, and say no to the work you've always suspected was a waste of your time anyway. Starting your own business can also be a great way to boost your wealth, as if you do well, you keep all the rewards in your own pocket. But the process of starting your own business means you take on all of the risks, as well as getting all of the possible rewards. Many also get into self-employed life, and find out the reality of the work day is quite different from what they expected. So, what are some tips from a person who's doing all of this, and is ready to share the good, bad, and ugly of it? You've probably seen her on your TV or heard her on the radio before, and now she's ready to share how she makes her business work. For the latest podcast I talked to broadcaster Brodie Kane. If you have a question about this podcast, or a question you'd like answered in the next one, come and talk to me about it. I'm on Facebook here , Instagram here, and Twitter here. You name it, she has done it. Marathons. Army. Journalisim. TV presenting. Breakfast radio. Now Dancing on TV! 10 weeks into lockdown and no end in sight just yet for Auckland. The Government has announced a traffic light system as New Zealand transitions out of the elimination strategy and alert levels, but Friday's announcement didn't present as many certainties as people would've hoped for. There is also a debate on whether the traffic light system will cause more division among anti-vaxxers and double vaccinated. One of the announcements from Friday was that the traffic light system will take effect when DHBs hit 90 per cent double vaccinated. But the issue of getting those remaining people to get to 90 per cent vaccinated is holding back the traffic light system and could potentially create more division. And then there is the issue with Christmas.Although Jacinda Ardern told Stuff that Aucklanders should be able to travel for Christmas, the issue of policing that with vaccine certificates is another issue entriely.Listen above as Brodie Kane and Ben Thomas discuss the week's news with Francesca Rudkin on The Sunday Panel
