Time to revisit a songwriter from the 20th century whose influence is still felt today. Notwithstanding his unworldly talent for melodies, Hoagy Carmichael left a legacy of the smart alec piano player in the corner, reflecting on all that was around him, composing several hundred songs including fifty that achieved hit-record status during his long career. From his 1927 recording that introduced Stardust to later Hollywood songs that stood the test of time, including Ray Charles' Georgia On My Mind or Willie Nelson's Stardust, his songwriting was only matched by his personality, lowdown and smooth, able to sell his songs to lyricists, music publishers, film producers, and promoting them to the public via microphones on stage and in mass media. We'll spend a couple hours with his music…from Paul Whiteman to The Brother Brothers, here on Sonoma County Community Radio. Hope you can join us.

A fine blend of vintage sounds on the show today, all driving down a free form track. The blend mixes gospel from Mavis Staples, some classic mid-century rock from Little Feat and Rick Nelson, all dressed up alongside to lounge and cool jazz sounds of Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Pearl Bailey, and a some classic and contemporary tunes featuring the late, great Tony Bennett. We've got Zydeco, classic and contemporary country, some alternative sounds from E and the Eels to share as well. We enjoy sharing a mix of the very best in a free form show every month or so and today will not disappoint. There will also be some recent tracks from Sarah Jarosz, Charley Crockett and The Brother Brothers to measure up against the throwback sounds. Jim and Mike TALK

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2021 48:22

Jim and Mike interview FANTASY recording artist ANDREA VON KAMPEN (Lincoln Nebraska Singer/Songwriter)   ABOUT ANDREA VON KAMPEN Andrea von Kampen is a folk singer-songwriter based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose effortless vocal delivery has been praised by Hear Nebraska as “soulful and worn-in.” With the successful release of two EP's, Another Day (2015) and Desdemona (2016), a Christmas EP (2016), an Audiotree Live album (2017), and her debut full-length album Old Country (2019), Andrea has quickly established herself in the recording studio and on the road. She has shared the stage with artists such as Tall Heights, Ira Wolf, Dead Man Winter, The Brother Brothers, Dead Horses, Darling West and many more. Old Country, Andrea von Kampen's debut full-length album, was released on February 8th, 2019. The album was recorded and mastered in Nebraska and features exclusively Nebraska-based musicians. Inspiration for Andrea's songs often come from literature, art, and nature; in particular the literature and nature of Nebraska and the Midwest. The title track, Old Country, is based on the book “My Ántonia” by Nebraska author Willa Cather. Her single, Portland, received notable attention including features on The Bluegrass Situation, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Additionally, Amazon Music Canada featured Portland in their ‘Top Songs of 2018' playlist. In a review of Portland, Ear To The Ground Music said, “It's not so much about where you're going, but that you want to get away. That emotion of “idealistic escapism” is one that listeners can all connect with, whether or not we want to go to Oregon or somewhere else. The inflection in von Kampen's vocal has the conviction of a gospel track and the sincerity of a Dylan folk ballad.”   Andrea von Kampen first appeared in the public eye with her submission of Let Me Down Easy into the 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. And Down” junto a Riley Green a Parker McCollum. Se trata de "Some Things Never Change".

Escuchar audio

The Brother Brothers are rooted in sibling harmony provided by twin brothers Adam and David Moss. Adam Moss would prefer if you didn't get really weird about twin stuff: “We sometimes find being twins a barrier to conversing and getting to know people quickly. It's an easy thing for people to fixate on," he says. Truthfully there is PLENTY to discuss with Adam, who plays several instruments, but started on the violin. His focus was on classical, but he studied Klezmer and sometimes incorporates it into his music. Adam talks about what it means to include his Jewish heritage into his songs. While attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Adam and David started to realize that the classical world was not for them. Adam joined a bluegrass band and eventually moved to Austin, Texas to be closer to the community that surrounded the Kerrville Folk Fest, which was an integral part in his development as a roots player. David also moved to Austin, but the brothers didn't start their project together until they relocated to Brooklyn. There, they discovered they were ready, musically and personally ready, to be in a band together. Originally, The Brother Brothers did not write together, but this is something that has changed with their new record, Calle Lily. Adam talks about writing with David has impacted his process. The album is filled with comfort, warm sincerity and an earnestness that comes off in a very cool and authentic way. I'd definitely describe Adam's temperament as such and get his opinion on that observation as well. If we're not gonna talk about twin stuff, the second most awkward thing you could discuss is how you are as cool as you are. Adam pulls it off great.
