This week's guest is Griffin Goldsmith, drummer for the band Dawes. I've been lucky enough to see Griffin perform a few times in person the last month and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite drummers. Also…Dawes just released a 10TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION of their album “Stories Dont End” on limited edition storm cloud vinyl with Remixed & Remastered songs + 6 Bonus Tracks. You can check out that and all their other offerings at dawestheband.com In addition to Dawes, Griff has also worked with countless artists such as Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, Robbie Robertson, Jim Keltner, Elvis Costello, Sharon Von Etten, Angel Olson, Jenny Lewis, Bahamas and the list goes on and on. He's recently added film scoring to his list of accomplishments. His delicate and deliberate touch is timeless and honors the gold standard of what it means to be a studio musician. Conversations like this are why I get so excited every week to talk to the best drummers of the day. Griffin's choices are sourced from the apex of human artistry behind the kit and I know you will all be better drummers after hearing what he has to say. Anna Deavere Smith is one of the most accomplished people in American theater. She's an incredible actor, playwright and scholar. But, Anna's also a trailblazer. Plays like Fires in the Mirror and Let Me Down Easy have pushed the boundaries of traditional theater. But Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is perhaps the most exemplary of her work. Anna interviewed over 300 people about the Rodney King beating and its aftermath. And she turned their words into a play where she acted every part. 30 years ago, that show premiered at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Now, the show is back at the Mark Taper Forum for a second run. It's been revised for a group of five people of different ages, genders and races. This week on Bullseye, Anna Deavere Smith joins us to talk about the revised production of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Plus, what it's like to revisit such an iconic piece after so many years.

Our guest this week to share 3 thoughts on this topic is Marty Dodson, who is a Nashville-based prolific songwriter with ten #1 hit songs, a partner & co-founder of SongTown.Com and a writer for Sail Away Songs. Growing up, he was intimidated by the sheer number of people coming to Nashville to become singers or songwriters. So, he went to college and earned a degree in psychology. After working ten years as a youth minister, Marty decided to change careers. Trouble was, he didn't know what he wanted to be when he grew up. He fumbled around for several years, doing odd jobs and trying to decide on a direction for his life. Finally, a book he read helped him realize that what he REALLY wanted to be was a songwriter. He had run into Gordon Payne, a member of the Crickets, while working one of his odd jobs. Gordon helped him re-write one of his songs and demo it in a Nashville studio. Marty was hooked. He threw caution to the wind, quit the other jobs and began writing full-time. 10 #1 songs and more than 135 cuts later, Marty has become one of the most accomplished writers in Nashville with notable hit singles such as "Fire It Up” by Joe Cocker, “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” by Kenny Chesney, “Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right” and “Let Me Down Easy” by Billy Currington. His songs have been recorded by numerous other artists including: Blake Shelton, George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, The Plain White T's, The Oak Ridge Boys, Don Williams, Johnny Reid, Billy Ray Cyrus and Big & Rich. Marty's self-professed “greatest achievement” in his songwriting career to date was knocking artist Psy (“Gangnam Style”) out of the #1 spot in South Korea and winning “Song of the Year” honors for South Korea and all of Asia with his song “Bounce” recorded by Cho Yong Pil. Marty currently resides in Nashville TN with his wife Candy. He is a partner and co-founder of SongTown.Com and is a writer for Sail Away Songs. O primeiro single de Bettye foi "My Man – He's a Loving Man", no outono de 1962. Songs by: AaliyahSongs: “At Your Best” & “Let Me Down Easy”Photo credit: MikaV - Own workUsage: CC BY-SA 4.0Podcast vocals: Gail NoblesKeyboardist & Drummer: Gail NoblesToday's topic is Aaliyah and the Isley Brothers Songs. Songs like At Your Best and Let Me Down Easy. Nobody can sing a song by the Isley brothers like Aaliyah. I just hummed the tune of “Let Me Down Easy” and I sang three words from “At Your Best” so you can know what songs I'm talking about. Aaliyah had a beautiful voice. I love the way she sang ballads. Especially those ballads by the Isley brothers. Hearing her was like hearing their songs for the first time. There was so much feeling. The Isley brothers have done well singing those songs too, but there was just something special about the way Aaliyah sang them. When some people sing, all you hear is shouting, but Aaliyah proved that it is not always needed. She probably could do a lot more with her voice.I've heard her sing Christmas songs standing on stage with Shirley Caesar and others on a Christmas special.I thought, “If Aaliyah sounds that great singing Christmas songs, she probably can sing the gospel.”Remember her performance at the 1998 Oscars where she made history as the youngest entertainer to ever perform on the Oscar's stage? Aaliyah performed her song “Journey to the Past” ? Right there she was letting us know that she was more than hip hop. The girl had it going on. Getting back to the songs she sang by the Isley Brothers, she was already letting us know from the get go. (At Your Best) You Are Love is a song originally a radio hit in 1976. Then Aaliyah comes along with her version eighteen years later. It was released as the album's second single. It peaked at number 6 on the billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the R&B singles chart. It also peaked at number 27 on the UK singles chart. The song was certified a gold single by RIAA on Oct 25, 1994. You can find “ At Your Best” on the studio album, “ Age Ain't Nothing but a Number”. “Let Me Down Easy” is from the 1976 album “Harvest for the World” by the Isley Brothers. I heard Aaliyah sing the song in an interview with no music. You can now hear it on YouTube with music.Today you've heard a podcast about “Princess of R&B Aaliyah. I'm your host Gail Nobles. Tune in again next time for more music history & news. Thank you for listening.

ODESZA - "The Last Goodbye (feat. Bettye LaVette)," a 2022 single on Foreign Family Collective/Ninja Tune. In Early February, ODESZA returned from a four-year hiatus to drop the cinematic soulful single, “The Last Goodbye.” Featuring reworked vocals from Bettye LaVette's 1965 soul/R&B track “Let Me Down Easy,” the track is a six-minute spine-tingling epic blending the Grammy-nominated duo's electronic grooves with LaVette's heartwrenching vocals to stirring effect. “This song was born out of the concept of trying to bring these lasting, defining musical pieces like the 1965 release of “Let Me Down Easy” by Bettye LaVette into a modern and contemporary electronic setting,” explained Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills of the song. “The idea of bringing two worlds together, that at first seem distant, has always been something we've been drawn to. It was an absolute honor to be able to work with Bettye's voice over the course of writing the track. She's able to convey emotion with her vocal work unlike any other. To date, this has been one of the more fulfilling songs we've had the chance to work on as artists.” The song comes from ODESZA's forthcoming fourth studio album of the same title, which according to a press release, is said to be their most ambitious and personal album to date and includes contributions from a number of notable artists including Låpsley, Ólafur Arnolds, Julianna Barwick, Izzy Bizu, and Charlie Houston. The video for “The Last Goodbye” artfully highlights the power of the instrumentation (including KEXP's Eva Walker on bass!) and features archival footage of LaVette performing “Let Me Down Easy.” Watch it at the link below.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Cornell over Zoom video! Entrepreneur and singer-songwriter Peter Cornell (Inflatable Soule, Black Market Radio) has always had a passion for three of life's greatest treasures – family, music, and a really good cup of coffee. Now, Cornell has announced that he is combining all of these loves with the opening of the Cornell Brothers Coffee Espresso Bar in the heart of Historic Downtown Nolensville, TN, as well as the international launch of his premier line, Cornell Brothers Coffee: Small Batch Roasters and merchandise on June 1, 2021.According to Cornell, the company was named in memory of his late Grandfather and three uncles, all of whom were very influential in his life.Cornell Brothers Coffee Espresso Bar serves up multiple varieties of freshly-roasted espresso and coffee, which Cornell partnered with Nashville master roaster Lesa Wood to source and produce.Cornell's wife and business partner is veteran music industry executive Amy Decker, who located the espresso bar's premises inside Oh My Chives Natural Co-Op Market (7332 Nolensville Rd, Nolensville, TN), a popular co-op owned and operated by Angela Daly.“Oh My Chives is proud to be teaming up with Cornell Brothers Coffee,” said Daly. Available through www.cornellbrotherscoffee.com, coffee aficionados worldwide can purchase fresh-roasted Cornell varieties online. According to Cornell, “We roast each week and ship on Thursdays. If we don't have your order by Monday night, we will hold it until the following week so your product is of the highest quality we can provide.”Nolensville is the first place since Seattle that Cornell says truly feels like home, which is why he's excited to build a business and give back to his community in such a meaningful way. Before moving to TN, he spent the majority of his adult life crisscrossing the country performing in various musical projects, including his very first band Inflatable Soule, featuring his sisters Suzy (percussion/vocals) and Katy (flute/vocals), and managed by Susan Silver (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains). Before Cornell moved to New York City, the group released three albums and started Black Market Radio (BMR), with bassist Keith Mannino. Their 2006 album, Suicide Parlor, was hailed as “vibrant [and] blistering, with emotionally resonant tracks” (Last. FM). After that release, Cornell decided to take his career in a new direction and record a solo album entitled Champion with former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese on drums. Lauded by critics as an “instantly impactful and passionately powerful collection of songs” (Artist Direct), Cornell's solo effort saw commercial success with its single “Wash” appearing in the Vampire Diaries. Now, settled into TN life, Cornell has started writing and collaborating with other artists in addition to launching Cornell Brothers Coffee. His latest project was with multi-platinum rock band Candlebox. Cornell co-wrote the single “Let Me Down Easy” with frontman Kevin Martin for their forthcoming album Wolves (September 2021).We want to hear from you! Jim and Mike interview FANTASY recording artist ANDREA VON KAMPEN (Lincoln Nebraska Singer/Songwriter) ABOUT ANDREA VON KAMPEN Andrea von Kampen is a folk singer-songwriter based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose effortless vocal delivery has been praised by Hear Nebraska as “soulful and worn-in.” With the successful release of two EP's, Another Day (2015) and Desdemona (2016), a Christmas EP (2016), an Audiotree Live album (2017), and her debut full-length album Old Country (2019), Andrea has quickly established herself in the recording studio and on the road. She has shared the stage with artists such as Tall Heights, Ira Wolf, Dead Man Winter, The Brother Brothers, Dead Horses, Darling West and many more. Old Country, Andrea von Kampen's debut full-length album, was released on February 8th, 2019. The album was recorded and mastered in Nebraska and features exclusively Nebraska-based musicians. Inspiration for Andrea's songs often come from literature, art, and nature; in particular the literature and nature of Nebraska and the Midwest. The title track, Old Country, is based on the book “My Ántonia” by Nebraska author Willa Cather. Her single, Portland, received notable attention including features on The Bluegrass Situation, Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Additionally, Amazon Music Canada featured Portland in their ‘Top Songs of 2018' playlist. In a review of Portland, Ear To The Ground Music said, “It's not so much about where you're going, but that you want to get away. That emotion of “idealistic escapism” is one that listeners can all connect with, whether or not we want to go to Oregon or somewhere else. The inflection in von Kampen's vocal has the conviction of a gospel track and the sincerity of a Dylan folk ballad.” Andrea von Kampen first appeared in the public eye with her submission of Let Me Down Easy into the 2016 Tiny Desk Contest. Within 24 hours of submission, NPR Music, All Songs Considered tweeted her video as the featured artist of the day, saying “we were completely blown away.” Ultimately, Andrea finished the competition as a top ten finalist, which lead to increased popularity of her EP, Another Day, specifically her song Trainsong. Since then, her EPs have amassed millions of streams on Spotify and continue to grow. Her newest album "THAT SPELL" was released on August 6, 2021 You can visit andrea's website to order the album and other cool merchandise at: www.andreavonkampen.com COPYRIGHT CLAIM : the songs TAKE BACK THY GIFT, TETON, JULIA and TRAINSONG used with permission from : Andrea Von Kampen, Jimmy Rhine, Concord & Fantasy Recordings You can find our podcast on Apple Music, Spotify, Podbean, Iheart Radio, Pandora and anywhere you listen to podcasts. Much of his success came in the country world with singles such as Rascal Flatts’ Top 10 hit “While You Loved Me,” Carrie Underwood’s “Songs Like This,” Kenny Chesney’s multi-week #1 hit “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven,” Charlie Worsham’s debut single “Could It Be,” Blake Shelton’s “Doing it to Country Songs.” and two Billy Currington chart-toppers, “Must Be Doin’ Something’ Right” and “Let Me Down Easy.” Never one to limit himself to a single genre, Marty has also collaborated with Tom Higgenson of the rock band Plain White T’s, which recorded two of his songs, and has had his compositions recorded by everyone from Joe Cocker, who had an international #1 with Marty’s “Fire It Up,” to Cho Yong Pil, a South Korean superstar who had a multi-week #1 with Marty’s song “Bounce.” In addition to his writing, Marty is the co-founder of Songtown, a creative community of aspiring writers that provides blog posts, webinars, podcasts, and even books, including two co-authored by Marty: Song Building: Mastering Lyric Writing, and The Songwriter’s Guide to Mastering Co-Writing.
Episode 129- Kevin Martin from Candlebox! This was fun as I’ve been a fan of Candlebox since their debut and they are from my hometown of Seattle. Their debut sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Tours with Metallica, Rush and Aerosmith followed. Kevin tells the story of how the band formed and the early club days in Seattle. We discuss the Seattle scene, the new album “Wolves”, dealing with haters, and the infamous Courtney Love feud. 0:00:00 - Intro0:01:43 - Early Musical Beginings0:03:25 - Shoe Store & Seattle Bands 0:06:57 - Midnight Oil & Peter Garrett 0:08:56 - Forming Candlebox 0:10:42 - Humble Beginnings 0:13:10 - Seattle Bands: Lack of Camaraderie0:16:30 - Candlebox Debut Album Artwork 0:18:55 - Sweet Water & Green Apple Quick Step0:20:45 - My Sister's Machine & Ethical Dilemma 0:23:25 - Gruntruck & Dealing with Hate0:25:02 - Deserving Success0:26:05 - Rockstock '94 with Tool 0:28:30 - Candlebox's Genre 0:29:55 - Gift from Layne Staley 0:31:34 - Second Album (Lucy) 0:32:56 - Third Album (Happy Pills) 0:36:20 - Drummer Shannon Larkin 0:37:55 - "Gracious Few" Supergroup0:39:36 - "I Want it Back" Song 0:42:43 - Flirting with Velvet Revolver 0:44:16 - Love of Music 0:45:45 - "Wolves" Album Theme & Country Divisiveness0:48:50 - Music Brining People Together & Making Changes0:53:05 - New Singles From the Album 0:53:31 - "Let Me Down Easy" Co-Written with Pete Cornell 0:54:55 - Drums, Singing and Side Projects 0:57:15 - Courtney Love Feud 0:59:25 - Kevin's Podcast 1:01:30 - Breast Cancer 1:02:25 - Wrap UpCandlebox Website:https://www.candleboxrocks.comBreast Cancer Research Foundation:https://www.bcrf.orgChuck Shute Podcast Website:http://chuckshute.comSupport the show (https://venmo.com/Chuck-Shute)

It's a new week, and a new, great episode! I love talking about rock and metal music history on the show. In this episode, Anne Erickson (@AnneErickson) is joined by Kevin Martin of Candlebox (@Candlebox) to talk about the band's new song, "Let Me Down Easy," and what it was like growing up in Seattle during the grunge explosion of the late-'80s and early-'90s. It's a fascinating look back on that influential period in music culture. Link up with Anne on Facebook and Twitter at http://ItsMeAnne.com, and keep up with rock news and more at http://AudioInkRadio.com. XO
Back in 2016, Kevin Martin, Candlebox vocalist, and I did a virtual interview via Skype. Little did we know that four years later, these type of interviews would become the norm in 2020. What has Kevin been doing in the middle of the pandemic? Actually he admits he should be practicing more but fortunately his wife has been nudging him to get back at it. Candlebox worked with Peter Cornell, Chris' brother, for a new track called Let Me Down Easy. There is a possible virtual live performance coming once the band can all get in one spot...probably Los Angeles. And yes there will be a new album from Candlebox in 2021...and hopefully a tour to go with it.
Tommy Marz interviews Candlebox front man Kevin Martin. They discuss the band's new single - Let Me Down Easy.
On today's podcast, I talk with Kevin Martin about the upcoming Candlebox album, Wolves. He wrote with Chris Cornell's older brother, Peter, on the single "Let Me Down Easy". We talked about the beginning of the band and the Seattle scene, touring and getting to hang with RUSH, his prized 1972 guitar he calls Emmy Lou and tons more. This week's podcast is a June, 2011 interview with Anna Deavere Smith, while she was in the Bay Area discussing her then latest project, Let Me Down Easy, which was running at Berkeley Rep into early September of that year. Anna Deavere Smith has written and performed in several one-woman plays similar in style to Let Me Down Easy, including Fires in the Mirror and Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, which consist of short monologues in the voices and characters of individuals she interviewed. Prior to the interview, she'd appeared as an actress in several movies, and as a regular on both The West Wing and Nurse Jackie. She returned to Berkeley Rep three years later with another show, Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, which was filmed in 2018 and can be seen on HBO and HBO Max. Since 2011 she has been a regular on the TV shows Blackish and For The People, and is listed in the cast of an upcoming Netflix series, Inventing Anna. She was also seen in the film Can You Ever Forgive Me. The post Playwright Interview: Anna Deavere Smith, 2011 appeared first on KPFA.

To people who want to make it in the music industry as a writer, musician, or producer... but don't know how to get started. Carson Chamberlain tells us how he made it in Nashville and worked with country stars like Keith Whitley, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, Easton Corbin, and more in this episode of The Doorpost Podcast Project! BIO: Carson Chamberlain, a native of Berea, Kentucky, started professionally in the music business as a musician, bandleader and tour manager for the late Keith Whitley. After Keith's untimely death in 1989, he became tour manager for Clint Black, and later held the position of tour manager for Alan Jackson. In April of 1994, Carson took the position as Director of A&R for Mercury Nashville and was promoted to VP of A&R until his departure in August of 2002. Now Chamberlain is focusing all of his energy on writing and producing. As a BMI songwriter, Chamberlain has penned several number one singles for Alan Jackson such as “Love's Got A Hold On You,” Everything I Love,” and “Between The Devil And Me.” His penned song, “The Best Day,” the first single release from George Strait's Greatest Hits LP, quickly moved up the charts and stayed at #1 for three weeks. As a record producer, he has had other #1 success with the Mark Wills' singles “I Do (Cherish You),” “Don't Laugh At Me,” and “Wish You Were Here,” all #1 songs from his platinum-selling LP entitled “Wish You Were Here.” Chamberlain also, produced the #1 song “Back At One” from Mark Wills “Permanently” LP . Chamberlain penned Travis Tritt's hit single “Country Ain't Country,” and scored cuts on Gary Allan's Alright Guy album as well as Alan Jackson's Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits Volume 2, and Alan Jackson's 34 Number Ones, the single release “Another Side of You” on Joe Nichols, and the single release “Groovy Little Summer Song” on James Otto. In 2002, Chamberlain produced the Billy Currington's debut album for Mercury Records. Chamberlain also co-wrote the single “Walk A Little Straighter and “I Got A Feelin' “ both top ten country singles. Chamberlain also produced Billy Currington's #1 singles “Must Be Doin' Something Right” and “Good Directions” on his platinum selling album “Doin' Something Right” and #1 singles “Don't”, “People Are Crazy”, and “That's How Country Boys Roll” from his gold selling album “A Little Bit of Everything”. Chamberlain also produced Billy Currington's #1 singles “Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer” and “Let Me Down Easy” from his “Enjoy Yourself” album. In 2009, Chamberlain produced Easton Corbin's debut album. The first single “A Little More Country Than That” went to #1 and was the first single on a debut male artist to reach #1 in 7 years. The second single “Roll With It” also reached #1, making it the first time for a debut male artist to reach #1 with two consecutive #1 singles in 17 years. Chamberlain co-wrote the Corbin singles “I Can't Love You Back” and the third most played song on Country Radio in the year of 2013 “All Over The Road”. Chamberlain is currently in the studio producing an album on Jackie Lee, a new artist on Broken Bow Records. Other artists who have covered Carson's songs include Jamey Johnson, Craig Campbell, Gary Allan, Joe Nichols, Sammy Kershaw, James Otto, Hank Williams, Jr., John Michael Montgomery, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mark Wills, Julie Roberts, Blaine Larsen,, Keith Stegall, Don Williams, Jeff Bates, Chad Brock, Ronnie Milsap and The Lynns.
Betty Jo Haskins was born in Muskegon, Michigan. The family moved to Detroit when she was six years old. Bettye did not get her start in the church, but in that very same living room, where there was a jukebox, filled with the blues, country & western, and R&B records of the time. The "5" Royales, Dinah Washington, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Red Foley, ...these were her roots. At 16 years old Betty Jo changed her name to Bettye LaVette. Bettye's first single was "My Man - He’s a Loving Man.", in the fall of 1962. The record charted #7 R&B and put her on her first national tour, with Ben E. King, Clyde McPhatter, and another newcomer, Otis Redding. Some of Bettye’s albums include: “Let Me Down Easy”, “Tell Me a Lie”, “A Woman Like Me”, “ I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise”, "The Scene of the Crime", and “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook.” Bettye has won many awards including: W.C. Handy Award in 2004 and the “Pioneer Award” from The Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 2006. “The Scene of the Crime” album was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Blues Album” and “CD, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook” was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” Late 2012 saw the release of her album, "Thankful N' Thoughtful", and her autobiography, variously described as 'engrosing', 'riviting', 'hair-raising' and only suitable for the over 18s, "A Woman Like Me", co-written with David Ritz. Actor, playwright and journalist Anna Deavere Smith talks about the health care crisis and her play about people dealing with illness, health and the health care system, Let Me Down Easy
Anna Deavere Smith Listening between the Lines Observation is one of the most exacting skills every artist must cultivate. For a writer, listening is critical to the process of transmuting observed reality into art. Playwright and performer Anna Deavere Smith has shaped a singular career mining the riches of both spoken and unspoken language. Honoring her sources, she has developed an idiosyncratic theatrical form that is composed exclusively of verbatim texts hobbled together from years of interviews with both ordinary and extraordinary people. Her journey has led her through riot-torn streets and up academic ivory towers, encountering a dazzling cross-section of American individuals. Commonweal Board Member Eric Karpeles talks with Anna about her production, “Let Me Down Easy,” which is centered on the drama of the human body and its rough handling in the hands of the medical-industrial complex. Anna Deavere Smith Anna a poet, teacher, actor, and playwright. Her explosive theater works about race in America—Fires in the Mirror and Twilight: Los Angeles 1992—garnered considerable acclaim. Television and film credits include Nurse Jackie, The West Wing, The American President and The Human Stain. A professor at NYU, Smith is founder of The Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue and has taught at Harvard and Stanford. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1996. Find out more about her work on her website. Find out more about The New School at tns.commonweal.org.

I know. It's been a long time since the last audio edition of The Joy Trip Project. But if you've been following the blog and the Facebook page you'll know that I've been traveling on an extend Joy Trip. I just got back. Over the past several weeks of summer I've been conducting interviews and collecting stories about people and institutions hard at work making the world a better place. I know that sounds like hyperbole or so vague that it sounds almost meaningless. But there's really no other way for me to describe the athletes, artist and activists who find their way on this show. Yeah I know we talk a lot about climbing mountains or making movies about people who climb mountains or base jumping or kayaking or whatever, the point is these people work at protecting the planet and improving the lives of others by being actively engaged in the world in which they live. Through their stories about their adventures they stand as an example of how each of us can make a difference in the course our own lives and perhaps do some good. A few weeks ago I was at the Mountain Film Festival in Telluride. And if you've ever been you'll know this annual celebration of adventure culture through cinema is about a lot more than high altitude thrill rides and adrenaline induced mayhem. The collected speakers, authors, and filmmakers give us a look from their perspective into the many complex questions of life. One of the presenters and judge in the film competition was the actress Anna Deavere Smith. And while she's not a climber or a skier or any type of outdoor professional through the power of storytelling she has the ability show us a glimpse into the lives others who ponder these same questions. As part of her research to develop characters for Let Me Down Easy Ms. Smith interviewed a 340 people at the Yale School of Medicine facing their own mortality as they navigate their way through the American healthcare system. This isn't the kind of story I usually do on the Project. But I felt this presentation is important because those of us who lead healthy, down right vigorous active lives probably never think about how people in our community, probably people you know deal with chronic illness. And I'm sure few enough of us realize how much courage it takes to stare death in the face when retreat is not an option. Carolyn Jensen Chadwick This edition of the Joy Trip Project is dedicated to the memory of Public Radio Producer Carolyn Jensen Chadwick who passed away as this piece was in production. She and her husband Alex Chadwick, the producers of National Geographic Radio Expeditions on NPR, inspired the creation of this program. And for that we will always be grateful. Let Me Down Easy is a one-woman show from actor/playwright Anna Deavere Smith that pays homage to the human body. Smith discusses the play and some of the memorable individuals she portrays. (December 16, 2009)
America's leading practitioner of "documentary theatre," Anna Deavere Smith, discusses her newest work, "Let Me Down Easy", and how it developed from its original commission by the Yale Medical School, through productions at Long Wharf Theater and American Repertory Theater, to its current Off-Broadway run at Second Stage. She also talks about making a career choice between being a social activist or theatre artist while in graduate school; how she began to create her unique works under the banner of "On The Road" in the early 80s and the process she has used to develop her plays; how she came to the decision to play all the roles in her multi-character works; whether she feels other performers can or should endeavor to mimic the original voices in her plays; why after tackling the Crown Heights riots in her breakthrough work "Fires in the Mirror" she next took up a thematically similar topic in "Twilight: Los Angeles"; what her role has been as an artist within think-tanks including Harvard's Institute for Arts and Civic Dialogue and Washington DC's Center for American Progress; why she felt compelled to write the book "Letters to a Young Artist: Straight Up Advice on Making a Life in the Arts"; and the reason she considers being called a "clown" the highest form of compliment. Original air date - November 30, 2009.
