Tracking with her brand: “an old soul inside a 30-something millennial,” Alice Howe‘s latest was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. Although the legendary studio has seen massive icons like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Etta James recording their biggest hits, the building itself is quite unremarkable. Regardless, Alice was able to soak up the incredible vibe that ugly wood-paneled space offers over the course of the recording sessions, which was done in two parts. Freebo, her frequent collaborator and bassist, helmed the production and joined us for this interview. The two gave some insight into the way they communicate and how that works itself out in a studio setting. We dig into some of the songs on the new record Circumstance, including “What About You,” which comes along with a music video featuring some very playful sides of Alice, including some very femme scenes of her at the pool and on the beach. We got into an interesting discussion of different ways women portray themselves in music, using Bonnie Raitt and Linda Rondstadt prototypes. Not sure if we reached a consensus, but I enjoyed getting into it! We also get into how Freebo is a goofball AND a cool-guy scholar and how those traits translate into his and into Alice's music. And we leave some space for Alice and Freebo to fawn all over Freebo's former collaborator, Bonnie Raitt, and her recent song of the year award at the 2023 Grammys. It's always so fun to talk to Alice (who was also on episode 72!) and we have a doubly good time with Freebo. Behind the washtub basses and the fret less kind behind the Tuba's and any other instrument is the individual who engages with that apparatus. The sound that emanates from this instrument can depend upon the proficiency of the player, there use of scales and notes. Mathematics are part of it....but ultimately to be in a band you need to have a gig. And to have a gig you need to have soul. A collectivist mentality that as an accompanist you are doing your job making the leader sound as good as possible. My guest today came into his own when the musical spectrum was wide open. You had 1st generation blues players who were experimenting with electric mud, you had younger male and female artists who were looking to turn back the hands of time. Exploring jug band music and American Folk Music in a more modern setting. My guest musical career seems to have spanned several lifetimes. From Maria Muldaur to Bonnie Raitt, from Buddy Guy to Amos Garrett. From the cabins in Woodstock to the concrete jungle of Los Angeles my guest has continually reinvented himself. Adapting to the times and the changing dynamics of conveying authentic live music. Tales of the Road Warriors

Chad Watson is a world class bass player, songwriter, sideman and sidekick (just ask his lovely wife, Pam Loe). Artists he’s tour and /or records with include John York, Ronnie Milsap  and Charlie Rich, Freebo and Bonnie Raitt, Ja  mes Lee Stanley, Chris Hillman, The Burrito Brothers, Janis Ian, Ezra Mohawk and others. Some of the things I talk about with Chad include: Playing at one of my favorite venues, Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood with Freebo who used to be Bonnie Raitt’s bass player, and the Kulak’s Woodshed archives, which have been relocated to their Youtube channel,  where you can still see live performances from some of the performers mentioned in our conversation. He also takes about his days on the road with Ronnie Milsap;  A brush with Kim Fowley, reminisces about some of the old clubs like the Palomino and a missed opportunity to sit in with Stuff, the original house band from Saturday night live when we swapped stories about missed opportunities. I mentioned the I chickened out when Marty Rifkin invited me to sit in with the house jam at the Palomino. And then there’s great tale about country star Dale Watson - sorry, no spoilers. Chad is currently working on a few recording projects and has just tapped up a project with James Lee Stanley. He continues to perform live with his lovely wife, Pam Loe. Sometimes we are forced for the sake of our recovery & sobriety to walk away from a job, a relationship, a 12 Step support meeting or even a place of worship. These choices we make can save our life but can be extremely emotional and painful to make as they are often met with cold responses and separated from those we love. "When It's Time To Leave" is a vital topic to explore for those of us in recovery. Closing Song: STAND UP by Freebo. www.FreeboMusic.com

Fuzzbee Morse is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer & singer who's played with a mind-bending collection of musical trailblazers, inc: Lou Reed, Frank Zappa, Jaco Pastorius, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Aaron Neville, the Chambers Brothers, Ric Ocasek, Karla Bonoff, Richie Havens, Julian Lennon, Rufus Wainwright, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stevie Wonder, Dave Grohl, Daniel Lanois, Donovan, Nick Mason, Paul Allen, Axl Rose, Freebo & Derek Trucks, to name a few gifted characters. He recently released his first album, Dreams and Other Living Things, featuring Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta & David Sancious. Of this debut release, American Songwriter senior editor Paul Zollo said, "It’s a lesson in remarkable songwriting," "An absolute masterpiece, and one which I hope others will invite into their lives" and "An album for the ages." Lonesome Highway from Ireland said in their review, "The ten tracks are self-produced and jump out of the speakers with lots of quality and rich arrangements. This is one for the real connoisseurs and all songs are written by Fuzzbee with the exception of Voodoo Child (Slight Return) which only Fuzzbee could have the nerve to tackle and turn into his own impressive show stopper. Smooth and full of soul, serious chops and superb musicianship." He has written the score and songs for numerous films, TV shows and commercials, both dramatic & comedic, and plays lots of instruments, including guitar, keyboards, flute, bass, soprano sax, mandolin, vibes and many others. Wearing a slightly different hat, Fuzzbee has performed live comedy & musical improv for many years with The Flying Fannoli Brothers, Off The Wall, Top Tune, Rick Overton, Dan Aykroyd and lots of other funny people, making up lyrics and music in the spur of the moment on audience suggestions. Fuzzbee is now writing and arranging the songs for his next album and hopes life on earth will last long enough to have the release party. He plays regularly around Los Angeles. Freebo has an impressive musical pedigree, having recorded, performed & toured with oodles of luminaries, including Ringo Starr, John Mayall, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Maria Muldaur, and including 10 years playing bass with Bonnie Raitt. After decades doing other people's music, he found his calling to write his own songs, and it has fueled a rich collection of musical styles united by a strong spiritual undercurrent and, sometimes, overcurrent.

Leddy Hammock What Needs Changin’ in the World? by Freebo and Richard Mekdeci What needs changin’ in the world? – A whole lot of things, if it’s up to me. What needs changin’ in the world? Maybe it could be the way I’d like it to be. No more fightin’ in the neighborhood; hearts united for the sake o’ good. No more hunger and no more greed; ev’rybody’s rich, happy and free . . . . The more I look around, the more I see, I can’t do it all, but I can change me . . . . I could be the change I’d like to see.”

For 30 years, Freebo played bass on recordings and toured with some of the great artists of our time–people like Bonnie Raitt (10 years), John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, CSN, Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Michelle Shocked, Neil Young, Loudon Wainwright III, Dr. John, and many others. He has also appeared on Saturday Night Live, Midnight Special, Muppets Tonight, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. It was his yearning for more creative expression, however, that drove Freebo to begin a process of deep inner discovery, and this has led to his successful transition as a singer/songwriter. Freebo’s latest album is “Something to Believe”. The collection starts with “Standing Ovation” which could be the highlight of the album.  This song represents how Freebo wants to be remembered at his own funeral. Today we will be playing some of the songs from this album.
