REVIEW SONGS FROM THE LAST EPISODE Marc: “Spiderweb” Mikey: “Good Night Kiss”   Mikey: Good Night Kiss is a character song that could have multiple perspectives, and I like the ambivalence. It could be from Mal to Saffron, or Mal to Inara, or Inara to Mal. “We’re not who we thought we are. We’re both complicit in this.” FIVE MINUTE SHOW SUMMARY Episode 7: Jaynestown - Written by Ben Edlund Plot synopsis: Marc: The crew sets down at Canton, a town on Higgin’s moon, to discreetly pick up some contraband to finish a deal. They pose as buyers of “mud” (a type of clay) because the magistrate (Higgins) doesn’t take kindly to outsiders who aren’t buying. Mikey: Jayne is nervous because he botched robbery on this planet a few years ago, a robbery of Magistrate Higgins, and wears a ridiculous disguise. When they get into town they realize that Jayne is viewed as a local hero, and even has a statue in his honor and songs in his honor. Marc: They learn that the contact they were to meet had been caught and punished, but that his stash of contraband is still there. Then, Jayne gets recognized, and any chance of lying low disappear. Mal decides to use Jayne’s fame as a distraction so they can get the contraband. Mikey: Inara meets with Magistrate Higgins, who wants her to sleep with his son, Fess, a 26-year-old virgin, in order to “make a man of him.” She assures Fess that virginity is just one state of being and that he should be his own man. Marc: On the ship, an agitated River dismantles Shepard Book's Bible, insisting that it makes no sense and that she has to "fix" it. Book manages to calm her down and explains that the Bible is not about making sense, but about believing in something. Later, she attempts to repair and return it to him, but panics when she sees his wild head of hair that he normally keeps tied back. Mikey: The Magistrate learns that Jayne Cobb is back in town and releases "Stitch" from what appears to have been four years of solitary confinement in a very small cell. It’s revealed that Stich is Jayne’s former partner, whom he betrayed, from the botched robbery years ago. Higgins gives Stitch a loaded shotgun and then tells him that Jayne is back. Marc: After Inara and Fess have shared their intimate moment, she learns from him that Jayne is about to be captured and tried, and that the ship has been "land-locked". He tells her that he would rather Jayne escape. Mikey: The crew finds the contraband, and get it back to the ship behind the distraction of Jayne Day, then Mal & Kaylee go back to get Jayne, who is making a speech in the town square in fro nt of his statue. That speech is interrupted by a gunshot from Stitch. Marc: Stitch tells the mudders that Jayne is no hero, that the robbery was botched and that the only reason Jayne threw the money from their damaged aircraft is that it was still too heavy to fly after Jayne threw Stitch from the aircraft. Stitch fires the shotgun at Jayne, but a mudder jumps in the way of the blast. Mikey: Jayne stabs Stitch with a knife and, after a brief struggle, Stitch dies. Jayne then checks on the mudder who took the shot for him, finding him dead. Jayne knocks the statue of himself over, and they go back to the ship. Marc: With everyone back on Serenity, Wash attempts to take off, but finds the ship "land-locked" per the magistrate's order. It is quickly released, however, as Fess decides to prove himself a man by defying his father's attempt to capture the "Hero of Canton." Marc: I am ever so grateful for the kindness and generosity of Gunn Runners over on Patreon. Mikey: The generosity of my Patreon supporters is amazing, and helps keep the music being made. Thank you to all of you, especially Robin Abess, John R Wollard, Shouts Out Unicorn, Jeremy Jackson and Jennifer Lewis, and James Doster. I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. AIE NEWS In case you missed it, AIE has launched two fundraisers to benefit the guild. The first is the Pass the Hat fund drive to cover the costs of our web hosting, meetup.com site, and other expenses a guild our size generates. The second is the AIE BlizzCon Guild Hall Kick Starter Scott Johnson announced on this show last week, which will fund the amazing AIE gathering we hold every year alongside BlizzCon. The Guild Hall has been epic in past years, and this year, the kickstarter will make sure it's even more amazing than before. If you're interested in contributing to either fund drive, please see the forums for more details. (Note: the Kickstarter is not out yet, but keep your eyes out for it!)   Hey you graphic artists out there, AIE is looking for someone to create a set of icons for our UMAMI membership database website. We're currently using images shamelessly stolen off the net, but we want to do better than that, and come up with images that are unique to our community. If you've got the pixel pushing power, all the details can be found in the forums.   Meetups! This week we've got several Meetups being suggested. Siv is looking to hold a meetup at the Yard House in Lakewood, Colorado on Sept 28th; Aset has suggested a meetup during the Browncoat Ball in Phoenix on Oct 4th; and Psyanide is looking to gather together during the Nashville Comic Con which runs from October 18th to 20th.  If you're anywhere near those locations, see the relative posts in the Community Discussion section of our forums, and of course, don't forget we have a Meetup.com site which is perfect for planning get-together.   Of course we've been talking all about World of Warcraft and especially the new zone, the Timeless Isle. One of the great things about the island is all the rares that spawn non-stop and drop epic loot. There are so many, it's a little overwhelming, and nearly impossible to figure out where one is before it gets killed. Well Romulo has come to our aid, and posted a Wowhead map showing all the rare names and spawn locations. Study it well, there are a lot of free 496 purples waiting for you!   Jedis, this one is for you. Even though Star Wars: The Old Republic is free to play, they still offer a subscription, with paying subscribers getting many benefits that Free players miss out on. Rowna just posted that the subscribers will also be getting the next expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel, for free! New subscribers will get it if they sign up before October 20th. Previous subscribers must have been inactive before June 14th and sign up before Oct 20th to qualify. Current subscribers must stay subscribed until Oct 20th to qualify? Confused? Of course not, the Force is strong with you!   So one of the reasons to play Star Trek Online is all the cool ships, right? Well let's be frank, you can't be logged into the game ALL the time, but Perfect World entertainment is giving away 3 different 1 year ‘subscriptions' so you can collect your ships OUT of the game as well! Check out the official site for more details! You know you want your Dreadnaught class starship keeping yer papers in order, check it out! Each of the 3 prizes is 24 ships! October! So many things; fallen leaves, the nip in the air and it has been a year since Odile attended the Browncoat Ball ... This year it heralds the start of Marian Call's first ever tour of Europe and we are mighty pleased that she's coming. Following on from our support of Sean Maher's web project, "Retcon", we also spoke with creator, writer and leading lady, Miley Yamamoto, to learn more about the project and what Browncoats can do to continue to support it. Both interviews are fabulous and Odile and I want to thank both Marian and Miley for getting up early to fit in with us. Enjoy!
