In today's episode, I am joined by Eric Keating. Eric is a go-to-market strategist and the vice president of marketing at Appcues. He has worked in the SaaS world his entire career, starting with a company called Sonicbids, and has spent more than 10 years in marketing. Eric is an expert in the concept of product-led growth, what we have called the free trial or the freemium experience on this show. Today, we're going to dive deep into product-led growth and monetization. What is Product-Led Growth? “Product-Led Growth is defined as a go-to-market strategy that relies on using your product as the main vehicle to acquire, activate, and retain customers.” (Source: ProductLed) Essentially, the name speaks for itself. In product-led growth, we provide a free self-service product for our visitors. In order to turn visitors into active customers, we have to hook them and provide clear value. Often this is done through free trials. “Product-led growth is this concept that's really gained a lot of steam and awareness over the last one to two years,” Eric said. “It's the idea that your product is the primary driver of your user experience. Making your product available to try for free in a self-service capacity as often as possible is one of the most effective ways to go-to-market today. . . . Leading with a self-service free product experience is something that has been true at almost every single company I've worked at.” Below, Eric has shared three ways to increase our product-led monetization growth. Communicate with Our Customers Communication is essential to monetize our self-service products. “In this world in which you need to deliver more self-service, effective product experiences, there's this need to guide and communicate with users inside of your application,” Eric explained. “That's the type of product experience that, when you do this effectively, can really drive adoption of your product and create new monetization opportunities.” In product-led growth marketing, we are offering a free service. But how do we continue to deliver value to our users, while also turning them into paying customers? The key is communication. We can't just launch a free trial and hope that will be enough to monetize. We need to guide our users through the experience by raising awareness of the features our product offers. From there we can explain the advanced features and benefits they can receive if they pay for premium access to our product. Communication is essential in increasing awareness of the benefits and value of our products. Surveys, announcements, and newsletters are a few examples of how we can spread awareness and communicate with our customers. The goal is to keep them engaged, keep them using our product, and ultimately, adopt it fully. One of Eric's biggest home runs was while working for Compete, Inc. Compete had thousands of free users every month, but they weren't converting as many customers as they would like. So, Eric started a project focused on analyzing how their customers were using the product, what features they were using, and what features and benefits they found most valuable. After doing the research, they created an incentive for the users to upgrade to the premium plan based on what they discovered through the data. He was able to double his company's monthly revenue over one month because he understood his users' wants and needs, and then communicated the value they were offering effectively through his promotion. Focus on the Initial Experience In order to convert our potential customers into active customers, we need to make sure they have a good initial experience with us and our product. “One of the most important parts of product-led growth is having a fantastic initial product experience,” Eric said. “I'm talking about the first minute your user starts using your product. The first day, two days, of their experience is so critical, not only to whether or not you're going to ultimately be able to convert them into a customer but also to their long-term retention.” One of the biggest mistakes Eric sees companies make is flooding a new user with every little detail and feature about their product. When they give a customer a product tour, they think they have to show the new user everything. However, it often has the opposite effect of what they intended. Instead of feeling amazed at the product's features, the new user gets overwhelmed. “[The new user is] starting to use your product because they have a specific goal or outcome in mind, and your job is to get them to that goal or outcome as quickly as possible, not show them every aspect of your product,” Eric explained. “It is a phased approach. Get them to that moment, and then start exposing them to more. It's this gradual process, and trying to do everything in the first minute can really mess with your activation rates and conversion rates.” In order to get a new user on board, we really need to focus on solving their problem. A product tour should be about explaining to the customer how we can help them, not about how amazing our product is and why they need it. Offer Level 10 Passions How do you stand out? Puppies. A few years ago, Eric attended an event with tens of thousands of attendees, and hundreds, if not thousands of vendors. As Eric and his team at Zaius planned what they were going to showcase at this event, they asked themselves, “What can we do to stand out?” “We were still in the early stages,” Eric said. “The objective [was to] make sure that everybody attending this conference heard about Zaius, and that we were a familiar name from now on out.” They asked themselves, “Well, what does everybody love?” And the answer came—puppies. They reached out to an animal shelter down the street from the event and asked if they could show off some of their dogs. If anyone wanted to take a dog home, they would cover the adoption fees. “We had the [dogs] there for about an hour and there were crowds. There were lines to come up and see these dogs. Mission accomplished. We had a ton of interest, not only in the dogs but eventually in our product as well,” Eric said. “Ultimately, the objective was to increase our brand visibility, awareness, and recognition, and we did that.” After three years with Zaius, Eric helped grow their customer count 100x and revenues 35x, raising more than $43 million in venture capital. So, what's the point of this story? Think outside of the box and discover your customers' level 10 passions. When we do that, it will help to differentiate us and better connect with our potential customers. One of the tectonic shifts that are happening today is for every hour and every dollar that our customers have to invest, they've got a thousand good things to choose from. There's so much distraction. We can't just be good enough. We have to identify their level 10 passions and connect with them through those (level 10 being a passion that is a driving factor in their life). Identifying the level 10 passions of our target audience and building our whole business around those passions will make us stand out. When Eric brought in puppies to the event, he leveraged a huge level 10 passion for many of the attendees. There were thousands of vendors at this conference, but he became the priority when he added puppies to their brand. In order to drive the growth of our products, we need to make sure we are identifying and connecting through our customers' level 10 passions. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Eric for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Communication is key to monetize our self-service products. We need to guide our users through their product experience by raising awareness of the features and benefits our product offers. To convert our potential customers into active customers, we need to provide a great initial experience. The first impression really matters. Our job is to show our customers that we can meet their needs as quickly as possible. We don't need to show them every aspect of our product. If we can help our customers achieve their level 10 passions, we will better differentiate ourselves and build stronger connections with customers. The latest episode of the DIY Artist Route Podcast is here! And it features none other than my good friend Angela Mastrogiacomo.Aside from being one of the most inspiring and kick-ass people I know, Angela excels at the real heart of PR and marketing work: relationship building. That's why I had to have her on the podcast to share her insights with you.As a music curator and media host, there are a lot of marketing and PR people who contact me every day, usually for the same reasons. They have an artist or band they want to promote. Maybe there's a new single their artist just released and they want media feature on my radio show. They want a review or feature of some kind. This are some of the traditional ways that music promoters, publicists, and PR companies operate. Tragically though, many marketing and PR endeavors fail. Whether it's a company that charges and arm & a leg for their work or it's a do-it-from-scratch solo artist reaching out to media for feature, the key element in this puzzle is…….you guessed it, relationship building.Which has become somewhat of a buzzword these days. When subjects as important as relationship building become buzzwords, it's easy to lose the meaning of the concept. Which is another big subject we dive into in this podcast. One big thing that trips creative entrepreneurs like you and I up is our own negative mindsets. Wait, what does that have to do with marketing, or with relationship building? Everything my friend! Our ego can be our worst enemy. For some artists, the ego says that who they can't connect with a music influencer with their story or music. So they try to parrot the work that other bigger artists do to promote themselves. It's not genuine, therefore it doesn't connect in the best ways that a sincere approach to relationship does.Other artists struggle with a more arrogant form of ego, one that tells them they should be treated like royalty. So talk yourself up like you're a god, and have the media eating out of your hand. And if they don't respond to you this way, screw 'em!That's the ego talking. When you work on marketing yourself, building genuine one-to-one relationships takes you further than anything. It's what's made Angela so successful with her work on Muddy Paw PR and Infectious Magazine. She's written tons of articles for Sonicbids and other music-centered publications, all covering the subjects of marketing, PR, and relationship building. We all deal with ego. Ego affects our mindsets, creates fears and insecurities, and if not dealt with can cause struggles that aren't overcome. One weapon against the work of the ego is vulnerability. Sounds strange right? How can vulnerability be the antidote to ego? Angela and I discuss this at length in the podcast.I'm being fairly overt here. Listen to the podcast. Download it. Share it. Then connect with both of us and share your story with us.Here are some ways to connect with Angela. She wants to hear from you so reach out to her and tell her you heard her on the DIY Artist Route.Muddy Paw PRInfectious MagazineFacebookTwitterShe gave her email at the end of the podcast, but in case you missed it you can contact her via angela@muddypawpr.comFears and mindsets are struggles for everyone. Honestly, dealing with personal fears and negative mindsets has been a very big part of my year in 2017, which is why you haven't seen me post as many blogs or pieces.
Panos Panay is the founder and managing director of the Berklee Institute for Creative Entrepreneurship (BerkleeICE). Prior to this, Panos created Sonicbids, the leading platform for bands to book gigs and market themselves online, building a subscriber network of 550,000 bands and 35,000 promoters from more than 100 countries. He led the company as CEO for 13 years, from its inception until after its successful acquisition in a deal backed by Guggenheim Partners. Panos is also the co-founder of the Open Music Initiative, which has brought together more than 140 leading music, media, technology industry organizations, and academic institutions to create a blockchain-based open protocol for uniform identification of musical rights owners and creators. (We will get into what all of that means during the episode). At Berklee, his work and approach to entrepreneurial and innovation pedagogy builds heavily on the concepts of music thinking, and in particular jazz, as a catalyst for creative breakthroughs in business, life, and art; and he has spearheaded multi-disciplinary collaborations between Berklee and MIT; the design firm IDEO; and Brown University. Panos writes frequently about startups and entrepreneurship for blogs and publications such as Forbes, WSJ Accelerators, and Fast Company; and guest lectures and speaks at many universities and events around the world. Some of his many awards include: Fast Company's "Fast 50" honor; Inc Magazine's "Inc 500”; Mass Hi-Tech All Stars; Berklee College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award; Boston Business Journal’s “40 under 40” and BostInno's 50 on Fire. Sonicbids and Panos were also profiled in a chapter in the Financial Times-published book Outsmart by best-selling author Jim Champy. Panos is a native of Cyprus, and holds a Music Business/Management degree from Berklee College of Music.

Education for musicians and creative entrepreneurs is at an all-time high. There are multiple courses, books, seminars, trainings, workshops, blogs and everything in between for all of us to become the finest, brightest, and best at our creative endeavors.Jeremy Young is one such educator. A musician, blogger, and education specialist with Soundfly, Jeremy has spent the past several years blending his experience with music with knowledge and expertise. The results are a powerful combination of expertise and know-how that he shares with us here.Insights Into Jeremy YoungJeremy is a student and musician. He's taken his experience in the realm of musicianship to discover different methods of growth for not only his music career but also his entrepreneurial path. One of those methods is creating different music related companies. This little nugget of insight was really cool to talk about. There's a mention of Palover Press in our chat. It's a company he created to pair audiobooks and authors with musicians. There's a market for this kind of collaborative connection between 2 different types of creators. It's a path no one has carved yet, and one that he's still exploring. I'm diving into this too, in a little bit of a different way. Grab my audiobook on Noisetrade to see more of what I'm talking about. On the surface, it may seem like a wild pairing, authors and musicians in one product line. If it seems like a stretch, that's the results of great education. Great teachers, mentors, and coaches know how to stretch their students to a place where they do more and become more than the common student. Or to put it this way,“Growth happens by stretching and being challenged. When you stick to just what’s manageable, you’re really exchanging opportunity for frustration instead of exchanging opportunity for opportunity.”Aside from performing with his band Sontag Shogun, Jeremy teaches courses on guitar and business at Soundfly. He also has a few music related businesses. He loves helping musicians grow by way of the Soundfly blog, Flypaper. Go there to get some fantastic articles. The Pairing Of Values Creates Bigger WinsWhen was the last time you saw your core values as a connection point with other people? This is a big subject that has a lot to do with who you attract to your audience tribe, and who you connect with on a collaboration/networking presence.Values are the beliefs and ideals that drive what you do. For some, it's authenticity in their creative expression (meaning they're going to be themselves instead of adopting a 2nd personality when in "music mode"). For others it's relationship growth. Values drive what we pursue and how we pursue growth. It's like Jeremy says,“Interpersonal relationships are always more important than the project itself.”Our values help to define how we connect with people. Too often, musicians look at their creative process and the end result as something independent of other people. The best results for your work will come from how you pair yourself with strong relationships, and shared values among other people. This is a common theme in The DIY Musician's Radio Handbook. How To Create Opportunities For CollaborationI first met Jeremy Young through the avenues of curiosity. As I said in the podcast, I read a blog he did for Sonicbids where he talked about the 5 best books every musician needed to read. I had just published The DIY Musician's Radio Handbook

This week we’re excited to chat with music publicist and friend of the show, Laura Goldfarb! Laura is the big kahuna at Red Boot PR, and writer and producer at BTRtoday, where she also hosts the weekly Jam Session show. She created Red Boot PR in 2009, with the goal to breathe integrity back into the industry and treat PR clients like family. She’s worked with artists including past guests, Keaton Simons, Jesse Macht and Gabe Dixon, and she also writes for Sonicbids blog for their “Ask A Publicist” section. She was recently a panelist at SXSW talking about the secrets of pitching your band, and has been featured on Examiner.com, Hypebot and Tunecore. She owns four pairs of red boots, and if you’re wearing a pair of your own when you see her, she’ll buy you a beer. Highlights: - Laura pours her heart and soul into everything she does (and it shows!) - One of the biggest misconceptions artists have around PR is the cost of good PR - When it comes to PR it’s a marathon, not a sprint - If someone promises... Hi Podcast Listeners! In the first segment, Ryan and Dave discuss the "poor man's copyright" myth (and an SonicBids article on the subject by music lawyer Erin M. In the second segment, indie singer-songwriter and friend-of-the-show Mary Jennings stops by to talk about her latest remix album, her pregnancy, and her own feelings on copyrights. She also talks about "Indie Artist Resource", which is an organization she created that provides template documents, copyright registration assistance, and legal and business consultations for indie artists. You can find out more about Erin at musicindustrylawyer.com and indieartistresource.com. K8DS is Chicago pop acoustic songwriter/musician Kate Diaz, b. 1997. Kate is also an "Artists & Athletes For The Earth" ambassador for earthday.org. If you purchase her single between March 22 and April 22, Kate Diaz will donate 100% of the proceeds of "Down to Earth" from iTunes to the earthday.org's sustainable energy projects. About K8DS Kate Diaz writes all her own songs and has been recognized with numerous awards for her singing and songwriting, including from National YoungArts, ASCAP and Berklee. She is endorsed by Godin Guitars and plays a one hour acoustic show of original pop songs around Chicago, including a few at some of the most well known music festivals and venues in the Chicago area. Through her music, Kate runs a yearly children's cancer fundraiser, and has also been recognized twice as an environmentalist by national organizations. Kate started out on YouTube in 5th grade, and got herself a job playing at her local Potbelly sandwich shop the next year. She debuted twice in Chicago, age 12 at House Of Blues and age 13 at The Metro, as a guest performer of well-known bands who liked her youtube videos of their songs. At 13 Kate also discovered SonicBids, which opened up a whole new world for her, enabling the teenager to get selected online for shows and songwriting competitions in Chicago and beyond. Kate just released her third live acoustic album, and also has released two singles. K8 juggles high school and soccer with being a DIY musician, doing all her own booking, websites, poster and album art, videos, copyrighting, digital releases, burning CDs. Kate's passion for music is fueled by all the youtubers who take the time to leave comments, the generous customers at Potbelly and people who come out to shows, and the many incredibly nice musicians and music industry people, both online and in Chicago, who have gone out of their way with encouragement, opportunities, and the guitars that make the music. Find more about Kate Diaz at www.KateDiazMusic.com
15 year old Kate Diaz won 1st place in the 2011 Berklee/Sonicbids singer-songwriter contest, received a 2011-2012 ASCAPlus songwriting award, and was also selected on SonicBids to play at 2011 LOLLAPALOOZA's Kidzapalooza and to showcase at Milwaukee's 2011 Yellow Phone Music Conference. In September, this Chicagoland teen released her second live acoustic album of original songs, Electrified.
