After 15 years of medical practice and thousands of questions regarding nutrition, this is my favorite one: "is soy healthy?". Why did soy get such a bad reputation? Good Movie Podcast? reconvenes to the realms of archelogy and adventure with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). Dr. Indiana Jones returns with some new friends, the spunky kid Short Round and the anything but outdoorsy, lounge singer "Willie" Scott. This unlikely trio is thrown from Shanghai to India on a mystical voyage to bring prosperity back to the downtrodden, recover some sacred stones, and take down a once-thought extant blood-thirsty cult. This Spielberg summer block buster sequel is quite important to both Dan and Jonathan but will it feel more like a wildly fun minecart ride or just some "snake surprise." It might be for fortune and glory, but maybe, just maybe we will discover something much deeper in this booby trapped labyrinth. Mind my Gooseberry Bushes! Tonight on Good Movie Podcast? Dan and Jonathan are taking a much deserved trip to Dogville (2003). In this town is the underlying belly of seedy Americana. With a cast full of goodie goodies what happens when Nicole Kidman waltzes in? In a theatrical commentary of America who will be left standing, gnawing at the bones of humanity? Bring your chalk outlines and labeled stage directions, who is to be believed? Will Dan Ryan finally write the next great American novel? Will Jonathan resist smashing some Precious Moments figurines? The answers are both resoundingly clear, but maybe you should listen and demonstrate the tenants of stoicism? As the world prepares to embrace its new Frozen Empire, lovingly brought to us by the good people at Ghost Corps, we take a look at a movie that was kind of Ivan Reitman's unofficial Ghostbusters 3: 2001's Evolution. Um, so… yeah, this movie is something else, I tell you what. David Duchovny trying to be Bill Murray. Julianne Moore falling down. Selenium sulfide. A magical periodic table. Just as we promised (and/or threatened), Anime Was (Not) A Mistake is finally heading to a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars, now subtitled Episode IV - A New Hope, is the legendary film that launched a (mostly) beloved franchise. Pursued by the Galactic Empire, Princess Leia sends the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO on a vital mission. They must find the famed Obi-Wan Kenobi and deliver the secret Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance. The Death Star itself is a monstrous battle station capable of obliterating entire planets. Fated to undertake this quest is the young Luke Skywalker, who goes from a naïve farm boy to a Rebel pilot and a fledgling Jedi Knight. Rounding out the cast is the cynical smuggler Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca. This unlikely band of heroes will have to escape the Death Star, outmaneuver TIE Fighters, and make it back to the Alliance before the rebellion is extinguished. They are opposed by the cold and calculating Grand Moff Tarkin and the mysterious Darth Vader. Vader, the fallen Jedi responsible for destroying the order, still has unfinished business with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Everything leads to one of the most iconic outer-space dogfights in film history as a the Rebels launch their assault. Try to practice proper lightsaber usage, drink plenty of blue milk, and remember to check your motivator for today's exciting installment of Good Movie Podcast! Greetings sports fans! This week we bring you arguably John Waters' most widely viewed film: Serial Mom (1994). Pitch perfect performances really sell this tale of a middle class white lady from the Baltimore 'burbs who erases anyone that gets on her bad side. Ever been caught in an uncomfortable situation just because you're in a larger body? Want to find places where you can be comfortable without the fear of judgment? Our guest for today, Nyemade, shares her experiences that led her to join the team of AllGo, a Yelp-like review app designed specifically for fat people. Born out of her and AllGo founder, Rebecca's, struggles to find non-fat phobic doctors and other services, AllGo aims to create a world where people of all sizes can be comfortable. Nyemade takes us on a journey from her early years in Liberia, refugee experiences, and her eventual move to the US. We discuss her vision for AllGo and the potential it has in not only providing a much-needed service, but also in combating the societal stigma that fat people often face. We delve into the revenue streams for the app, the significant differences between AllGo and the National Plus Guide, and the promising future of AllGo. Our conversation goes deeper as we explore AllGo's potential in promoting mental wellness and self-advocacy. Nyemade enlightens on how the app can support inclusivity, and help users to stand up for their needs in uncomfortable situations. We also touch on societal pressures around body weight, health, and the judgment and misunderstanding that follow. Finally, we take a brief detour into the world of kink, discussing how online platforms like Fetlife can assist in exploring sexuality. The third installment of Good Movie Podcast? brings us to the cyberpunk metropolis of Champion City. The most popular and powerful superhero in this town is the sponsor-friendly Captain Amazing. This story, however, focuses on a trio of more unlikely heroes. Mr. Furious, the Shoveler, and the Blue Raja finally get their chance to shine when Captain Amazing is kidnapped by the villainous Casanova Frankenstein. This oddball team is soon joined by the Spleen, the Invisible Boy, and the Bowler. Even with the training provided by the mysterious Sphinx (and some gadgets provided by a genius inventor), the team might not be ready for the big leagues. Unfortunately, they may not have time to figure themselves out before Casanova's doomsday weapon takes Champion City off the map. This cult classic may not be winning any awards, but it certainly won Dan's heart. We do hope you'll join us for yet another Good Movie Podcast?, and help us decide if this movie is simply silly or something more sinister... “To the world you may be one person; But to one person you may be the world.” ~ Dr. Seuss. We never really know the difference we can make in another person's life by simply pausing long enough to listen. We also never know how we might be spurred to action once we recognize there is a need to be met. On this episode, I visit with Stephanie Smith (who I lovingly call Aunt Steph). Stephanie is a wife, mom of triplets, career woman & animal lover that calls Montgomery, Alabama home. She is also one of my dearest friends & greatest cheerleaders. We unpack how one decision my mom, Pam, made many years ago led to a beautiful friendship that has richly blessed our entire family. It's a story that began due to hardship, and there have been many life lessons learned along the way. While we never wish hardship on those we love, if it hadn't been for that hardship early on in my Aunt Steph's life- the story shared on this episode wouldn't exist. The story continues to unfold decades later- filled to the brim with endless amounts of support, love & kindness. I'm forever changed because of it & grateful I get to be part of it. I pray this episode encourages you to slow down, love harder, be kind, laugh more, give the gift of time to those who matter most, make memories & share those stories. You'll be glad you did- trust me. Please Contact Stephanie if her story blessed you via Facebook @ Stephanie Smith & or leave a podcast review. ****************************************************************************************************** Let's Connect! Each January, the International Professional Rodeo Association holds the International Finals Rodeo where the Top 15 cowboys & cowgirls in each event gather to compete for World titles. It has been 13 years since I first joined the IPRA family as Miss Rodeo USA, and 11 years since I had the opportunity to be part of rodeo history as one of the 15 qualifiers competing in the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping at IFR42. With each year that passes, I gain a deeper appreciation of the experiences I had by simply choosing to first bet on myself- which meant pursuing my dream of becoming Miss Rodeo USA. What I learned in the process of preparing to compete about myself, the sport of rodeo and my support system was impactful on many levels. 2010 changed the trajectory of my life (literally- I landed my career and my husband thanks to connections made in that one year). I will be forever grateful to each and every person that made sacrifices in order for me to pursue my dream. {there were many- oh so many} Thank you to the IPRA for welcoming me with open arms. From rodeo queen to event director to an official timer & a multitude of other unique opportunities along the way to learn & meet incredible people in between-You've always made me feel at home, & It's been quite the ride! On this episode, I take a stroll down memory lane and share the 6 Life Skills the IPRA equipped me with that make a winning combination both in & out of the arena. 1. How to Travel (efficiently & cost effectively) 2. Time Management 3. The Art of Making Everybody Feel Like a Somebody 4. Active Listening & Working Well with Others 5. Problem Solving 6. The timing couldn't have been more perfect for our guest Christina Black to share her story. November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month & Christina's new book "Two Grandpas & a Truck" that shares part of her family's adoption story was recently published as well. Christina is an adoptee. A title she shares first because it has made her who she is today and clearly defined family for her. And that is to love & be loved by others. She is a wife. Married to her high school sweetheart. They were both born and raised in Mound City, KS and recently moved to Des Moines, Iowa area for a job promotion. She is a momma. By adoption and biologically. Her trio is beautifully and wonderfully made, and she does not take for granted what an incredible gift it is to be their momma. She is a writer and now published author. Not intentionally at first. But her thoughts and experiences through adoption led her to her first ever children's book about adoption and family. She is a believer. In Jesus and the work he can do with open hands and a grace filled heart.
