The K9PT Academy Podcast: Business lessons for canine rehab therapists

I wanted to start off with a reminder that registration for the CRI business course is open and seats are filling up fast! If you're not aware, CRI stands for Canine Rehabilitation Institute. I am part of the faculty for that program and am looking forward to teaching everyone who joins the course! I've included the link to sign up at the bottom if you're interested. I also will be opening registration for my Business Accelerator course where I teach other Canine Rehab Therapists how to run their own businesses this spring! Stay tuned! This week's podcast episode focuses on the seasons of life and businesses. We always should aim for growth with our business, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the business will always be growing. It means that you are growing. Your life is changing…Maybe you are getting married, maybe you are starting a family, maybe you are traveling more, maybe you are working less so that you can do whatever you want to do. All of those things require the business to change… to evolve… to grow… and not necessarily to grow in size or revenue, but to grow in the sense of fitting what you need out of it for that particular time in your life. Because of that, your priorities will change and along with that, what you want or need out of the business should change as well. Most business owners fail to recognize that and instead will keep running the same business over and over again… year after year, while expecting that things will change and they never do. With that in mind, today we will talk about the different seasons or phases of life as a business owner. Want to learn more? Listen to the full episode! Dr. Ann Hutchinson was raised in Glasgow, Scotland. She earned her veterinary degree from the University of Glasgow in 1980. Afterwards, she entered mixed animal practice and after a few stops, spent the majority of her career in a small animal practice in Ayr. Her holistic journey started with an MFHom course for humans, followed by a short veterinary acupuncture course. She then completed the IVAS acupuncture course in 1999, and then spent time with Dr. Maria Glinski in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and two other Midwestern United States practices getting her acupuncture internship hours. Afterwards, she completed a 3.5 year course in human Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, UK while working in small animal practice. She is also one of the few veterinarians in the UK to be certified in rehabilitation by the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Hutchinson has lectured both nationally and internationally on various rehabilitation and acupuncture topics. She retired from practice in May of 2020, but joined Herbal Vets Scotland in October of 2021 and practices solely holistic medicine there. Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Ann Hutchinson as we discuss her veterinary education, early years in general practice, her time in the United States, adding holistic modalities to her practice, and the benefits of not having to muzzle humans in order to treat them with acupuncture.

This is Dr. Neal Sivula. I'm a veterinarian and owner of Dancing Paws Animal Wellness Center, a holistic veterinary practice located in beautiful Richfield, Ohio. Today I'll answer the question- "I love acupuncture for myself, can I get it for my pet?" Of course, you can! The basic acupuncture certification program for Veterinarians in the United States is a post-graduate course, usually around 200 hours in length. We learn Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, acupuncture point locations, case management, and in some courses, students study herbal medicine as well. Some courses only teach TCM, others teach a combination of TCM and Medical Acupuncture, and some teach Medical Acupuncture exclusively. All courses offer a certification examination upon completion of the course and most require internship hours with a certified doctor and the submission of a few case reports to verify that the candidate can think logically through an acupuncture case.  Like our human acupuncture colleagues, the basic training is only the start of our journey in acupuncture. Our certifications require that we participate in approved continuing education courses in acupuncture. These range in topic from refresher courses on basic acupuncture theory all the way to instruction in other techniques like the Balance Method or Scalp Acupuncture, or in other philosophies like Classical Chinese Medicine. Certification is just a jumping off point for every acupuncturist I know, continual education makes us better acupuncturists.  Once trained, veterinarians use acupuncture in all sorts of ways in their practice. I am fortunate in that I am able to limit my practice to holistic medicine, while other doctors may offer acupuncture as something that they provide alongside their allopathic services. So how should one find an acupuncturist for their pet? That can be a little complicated, as we don't have a centralized database for all veterinary acupuncturists. Resources that provide practitioner location services include the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, Chi University, Curacore Academy, the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. Of course, doctors that are seeking acupuncture patients will have that service listed on their practice websites as well.  If you're interested in hearing more about holistic veterinary medicine, I host “The Integrative Veterinarian" podcast where I have conversations with veterinarians and discuss their training and their lives as holistic practitioners. Acupuncture is as powerful in our animal friends as it is in humans, so don't forget to consider acupuncture when thinking about your pet's health!  Thanks for listening and be sure to tune in next week for the next Essential Point.  https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA ) Mentioned in this episode: https://everyday-acupuncture.captivate.fm/teaforme (ECO-CHA )

In this episode of Fueled Dr. Spoo talks with Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw of the Canine Arthritis Resources and Education or CARE website (https://caninearthritis.org/).  Dr. Kirkby Shaw is a small animal surgeon and rehabilitation specialist whose career has focused on bridging the gap between these two disciplines. Kristin received her DVM from the University of Florida (UF) in 2003, followed by a rotating internship at Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado, and a small animal surgery residency at the University of Florida. She completed both her MS and Ph.D. at UF. She is past-president of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians and worked as an instructor for the Canine Rehabilitation Institute for many years. In 2018, she was the recipient of the John J. Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation.  Dr. Kirkby Shaw founded CARE in 2018 to provide valuable tools and resources for her clients and veterinary colleagues, as well as those caring for dogs with arthritis around the world. In this episode we discuss her passion for canine arthritis---from what arthritis truly is, how arthritis differs in people and dogs, how to prevent it  and what options exist to treat it beyond non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. I learned a lot in this discussion and will be making some tweaks to my own treatment plans. And while I hope you never have to treat a dog with arthritis, the odds are against you if you own dogs over the course of a lifetime, should your hunting partner be one of the unfortunate I hope this episode helps keep them out in the field. This week on the Good Dog Pod, Laura Reeves is accompanied by Dr. Chris Zink, DVM. Dr. Zink is a canine sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist.  What is a sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist? A veterinary specialist is someone who has done a three year residency specializing in learning about a very specific field. At the end of that three year period, the specialist has to pass a very complicated examination that requires months of studying. There also are many people who have attended rehabilitation training. Rehabilitation training often requires hundreds of hours of classroom and laboratory time, and oftentimes requires an internship. If we are talking about people who have a certification in rehabilitation, there are four main groups that offer these certifications.  Four main groups that offer the certification: https://www.caninerehabinstitute.com/ (Canine Rehabilitation Institute) https://healingoasis.edu/ (Healing Oasis)  https://www.ivmi.us/ (Integrative Veterinary Medical Institute)  https://www.neseminars.com/animal-science/ (Northeast Seminars) A person who is certified in rehabilitation therapy might be a veterinarian, or they may be a physical therapist, in which case they aren't trained to do the veterinary component, but rather the rehabilitation component. They may in fact be a veterinary nurse who isn't trained to make diagnoses either. If you find yourself with a dog who may have an orthopedic injury, first you want to go to your general practitioner veterinarian. They are familiar with your dog and they know you. Should you need a referral, Dr. Zink recommends not to go to a certified rehabilitation professional but rather to an orthopedic surgeon or a sports medicine specialist. Remember: veterinarian first! How would your dog be treated? Some examples include laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, shockwave therapy, massage or other kinds of manipulation.  For more information on dog rehabilitation, check out this week's episode! Will you be attending Westminster 2021? Join us for a Breeder Appreciation Party on Friday, June 11th. The event will be outdoors, at Hudson Anchor Rooftop in Tarrytown, NY. We welcome to the podcast Dr. Francisco Maia PT, DPT, CCRT,  the K9PT!!  Dr. Maia talks about his introduction into canine rehabilitation, the path to certification, his need to educate others about the specialty, and how physical therapists and other rehab professionals can advocate for the ability to provide canine rehabilitation nationally.    Biography: Dr. Francisco Maia PT, DPT, CCRT Dr. Francisco Maia is a Physical Therapist who specializes in Canine Rehabilitation. Born and raised in Brazil, Francisco moved to the United States in 2005. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Exercise Science from IUPUI in 2009. Dr. Maia graduated with his DPT from the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. In 2014 after spending two years as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist Dr. Maia first heard about canine rehab from a colleague. In a matter of a month he signed up for the certification courses to specialize in canine rehab and finished in early 2015 with the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. As the time went by, he realized that a subset of the canine population was missing the benefits of canine rehabilitation due to a variety of reasons. These included difficulty going to a clinic due to pet owners' busy schedule, difficulty with transportation, or a decline in pet's mobility. Dr. Maia started reaching out to other PT's through his blog on what canine rehab is and how to experience this arena of practice. In 2016 he joined the faculty team at the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, teaching courses in canine rehabilitation to physical therapists and veterinarians going through their certification. In 2017, he decided to combine his experience in home health physical therapy with canine rehabilitation, and TheK9PT opened for business.
