Poet laureates do a lot more than write poetry. Since 1985, Connecticut state poet laureates have worked to promote the literary arts and poetry throughout the Nutmeg state, visiting schools, performing spoken word and passing on poetry to the next generation of writers. There is no straight path to this position. Some of our guests today have been writing poetry all their lives. Others got bitten by the poetry bug a little later. Today, three poet laureates from around our state join us in the studio. On today's show we open with a just released report from the House Committee on the Weaponization of Government, showing the 51 “spies who lied” about the Hunter Biden laptop knew they were lying and knew they were colluding with the Biden campaign. In fact, there were active CIA contractors who were part of the plan to pull off the PsyOp attack on the American electorate. Squad member Jamaal Bowman, who thinks fire alarms open locked doors, was just crushed in a democrat primary in New York State. He lost to democrat centrist George Latimer, who was much friendlier toward Israel than the Hamas-loving Bowman. In what I believe is a complete dereliction of duty, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, in a 6-3 decision, said that censorship case brought before them could not be decided due to a lack of standing. Justice Alito, who wrote the dissenting opinion believe the Court shirks it's duty and thus “permits the successful campaign of coercion in this case to stand as an attractive model for future officials who want to control what the people say, hear and think.” Constitutional scholar and law professor Jonathan Turley is equally disappointed in the Court's failure to uphold and defend the First Amendment. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas wants us to believe that we have never had a “more robust screening and vetting process” for guarding our border and knowing who is coming into our country. On the same day he stated that, NBC News ran a story of 50+ illegals with ties to ISIS-affiliated smuggling networks that were stopped by border patrol, but then allowed to enter the country. On a more positive note, Attorney General Andrew Bailey from Missouri just stated the Court granted his motion to block Joe Biden's illegal student loan forgiveness plan. It's a win for the Constitution, but as Biden repeatedly shows, he likely will ignore them. WH Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wants you to believe food prices have come down thanks to Joe Biden. She is one of the dumbest people in the White House. She doesn't understand that a slower pace of inflation is still inflation! Keeping with economic news, Axios reveals that 16 Noble Prize winners in economics say if Trump wins, his plan will detonate an inflation bomb. That's cute, given and equal number of Laureates stated that Biden's “Build Back Better” plan would not cause inflation, would not increase the debt and would pay for itself. Seems the Nobel Prize doesn't mean all that much anymore, as it relates to economics. As I close, I dive into someone else's theory that Joe Biden will not be replaced because why would they? The forces behind this radical transformation of our country are getting everything they want. It's a compelling argument and one that should be considered. Finally, off the topic, but something close to me and my family, I spend just a few minutes discussing the new Harry Potter series that is being developed for HBO. I know it has nothing to do with politics, but it's a reminder that it's okay to unplug from the world from time-to-time and enjoy a good movie, a good book, a good album or just good walk outside. In 1998, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to John Hume and David Trimble in recognition of their brave leadership in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland. Twenty-five years on from the awarding of the prize in Oslo and twenty-six from the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, we remember the pivotal roles of John Hume and David Trimble in building the Agreement and transforming life on the island of Ireland. Through its Citation Laureates program, Clarivate recognises individuals whose research publications are highly cited and whose contributions to their fields have been extremely influential, even transformative. This year, we named twenty world-class researchers from four countries as Citation Laureates. These are researchers whose work is deemed to be ‘of Nobel class', as demonstrated by analysis carried out by the ISI, and who are in the running for future Nobel honours. In this episode, you'll hear from two of this year's Citation Laureates who share insights into their work, how they got started, tips for young researchers, and more - Mary-Claire King, Professor of Medicine and of Genome Sciences, School of Medicine, at the University of Washington in Seattle, in the United States, recognized for demonstrating inherited susceptibility for breast and ovarian cancer and discovering the role played by mutations of the BRCA1 gene and Zhenan Bao, the K.K. In this week's episode, however, we're doing something a little different. We're talking poetry. Specifically, we're talking about the role of New Mexico's Poet Laureate. First, a little history. In 2014, companion memorials in the New Mexico House and Senate requested that the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs develop a "New Mexico Poet Laureate position and program to foster a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry and to highlight the importance of poetry in the everyday life of ordinary and extraordinary people to the creation of the New Mexico Poet Laureate position." Lack of funding, however, prevented the recommendation from being implemented. Ultimately, SB 536 of the 2019 Regular Session of the New Mexico Legislature — signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on April 5, 2019 — allocated $107,000 to the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs for the creation of a state poet laureate program. On January 30, 2020, Albuquerque poet Levi Romero was appointed New Mexico's inaugural Poet Laureate. This made New Mexico the 46th state to offer an official state poet or state writer position. Romero served as New Mexico Poet Laureate until Sept. 1 of this year, when Lauren Camp was named as the state's second poet laureate. This week, we're honored to be joined by both Levi and Lauren, who will talk about the role, the importance of poetry in everyday life, and the reward that comes from promoting literacy in the state.

Actors have their Oscars, and researchers have their Nobels. The Nobel prize has been the global pinnacle symbol of achievement in science since 1901 and economics since 1969. Each year since 2002, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™ at Clarivate has identified a small group of Citation Laureates™: exceptionally highly cited scientists and economists whose influence is comparable to past and future Nobel prize winners. So far, 64 Citation Laureates have gone on to win a Nobel Prize, including five this year in 2021. Joining us are David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information, and David Audretsch, Distinguished Professor and Ameritech Chair of Economic Development with the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, who has recently been named a Citation Laureate for 2021. Together we explore what it takes to win a Nobel Prize, and how Clarivate uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis to predict Nobel success, often years before a Nobel Prize is given. We discuss the fundamental role that citations play in identifying these giants of research, and how it feels to join the ranks of other ‘Nobel-class' researchers in the Hall of Citation Laureates. This is an audio-friendly version of the talk I gave at the UBC Gender Equity & STEM Virtual Conference on November 14, 2020. Abstract: One of the most famous awards in history, the Nobel prizes are given for the most important academic, cultural, and scientific advances around the world. Nobel laureates are some of the top scientists worldwide, however, of the 624 prizes in science awarded to date, only 23 have gone to women. The prizes also reflect the underrepresentation of other groups in scientific fields. There is a documented racial/ethnic disparity among laureates and there have been no LGBTQ+ Nobel laureates in science (though there have been 6 in Literature and 1 in Peace). Important groups of people are being left out of the prizes and their contributions to science are not being recognized through the Nobel program. In this short talk, I will discuss the Nobel prize statistics, some of the reasons for the disparities, as well as some actions that have been and can be taken to improve diversity among Nobel laureates.
