When we're wrestling with experiences that challenge our identities or our confidence—like failures at work, relationship struggles, or letting go of old belief systems — it can be tempting to reach for positive self-talk that pushes back against the difficult feelings we might be having. In today's guided practice, Caverly Morgan offers something much sturdier, what she calls unconditional reassurances. In this practice, we're not just saying the opposite of what we're feeling, hoping that it will be true. Rather, it's about anchoring into a deep-down sense of worthiness and compassion that's always present, regardless of how well things are going for us or how great we feel about ourselves in any given moment. This meditation is part of our Powerful Women of the Mindfulness Movement series, where we're sharing guided practices from the women featured in our 2025 special edition of Mindful magazine. This week, Christopher Willard and Olivia Weisser bring us a mediation inspired by the Japanese concept of ma, which refers to “the spaces between everything.” This practice invites us to take the opportunity to explore the empty spaces that exist all around us and inside us. For instance, we might think of the space between the plants in the garden, or between the notes in a song. It can also be emotional space, like the silences in a conversation. Or the little gaps between our thoughts and emotions. Often, we don't even notice these empty spaces—but bringing our awareness to them can reveal new meaning and beauty. By exploring the space in-between through this mindfulness practice, we also enhance our creativity, noticing skills, and awareness. We're also thrilled to announce our upcoming Community Connection Meditation Series, taking place from August 26th-30th, 2024! They explore the intersection of personal and collective practices for spiritual awakening. Caverly shares her journey of reconciling various teachings and traditions to arrive at an integrated approach. How to make your practice so lovely, so vital that you won't skip a day:Make your practice beautiful. Don't cram it in; savor it.Ask for what you most need. Name your intention, your purpose, your hope for this practice.Dedicate the merit. Our practice is never just about ourselves. Friend, fellow teacher and former Mindful Minute guest Caverly Morgan in The Heart of Who We Are:“The longer we cling to the notion that there's a separate self who awakens, the more arduous our path will be. We realize freedom together.”Patience, Presence, Kindness is my intention. It is for my interactions and sense of wakefulness in the world, and it is for the collective. We could all use more of these qualities, couldn't we? Meditation is a practice of collective empowerment. It is for us, not me alone. So, at the end of the practice, let us offer up the merit. May this practice benefit all. May this practice be for the good of humanity. May patience, presence and kindness spread across the planet. Remember where attention goes, energy flows. 01/07/2023, Caverly Morgan, dharma talk at City Center. This dharma talk is based off Caverly's new book, The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together, published by Sounds True. Have you ever found yourself identified with a self who is on a mission to annihilate the self? Have you found yourself believing you have to get rid of in order to experience truth? Believing that the conditioned mind can take charge and try to control and omit thoughts, experiences, people is a distortion of a negating, or Neti Neti, approach. And we do it in the name of spiritual practice. In this talk we explore this topic conceptually as well as through our own direct experience.
When Caverly Morgan reentered society after eight years as a Zen monk, she was confronted with a question many of us are asking these days: Considering the enormity of the problems before us, how can one individual's spiritual practice make a tangible difference in our world? In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Caverly about her new book, The Heart of Who We Are, and the connection between self-realization and collective transformation. Tune in as they explore these topics and more: the difference between the absolute and the relative; introducing teens to inquiry practice; self-improvement vs. self-realization; the core experience of who we are in our depths; the power of community; meeting our deepest needs; “changing costumes within the dance of suffering”; connecting with others “essence to essence”; broadening public access to contemplative practices; escaping the trap of perfectionism; letting go of our conditioning, individually and collectively; egoic behaviors versus “acts of being.” This episode first aired live and on video on Sounds True One. Today, on The Mindful Minute, I am sharing a conversation with meditation teacher and author Caverly Morgan about her new book, The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together.Caverly is a meditation teacher, author, speaker, and nonprofit founder. She is the founder and Lead Contemplative of Peace in Schools—a nonprofit which created the nation's first for-credit mindfulness class in public high schools. She is also the founder of Presence Collective, a community of cross-cultural contemplatives committed to personal and collective transformation. In this episode, Caverly and I really hone in on the phrase “realizing freedom together” and explore what this means in relation to our meditation practice, which far too easily can feel singular and isolated when we aren't practicing in community. We talk about book clubs vs. book collectives; about freedom, community and privilege; and what it means to stop imagining that liberation comes only when ‘I' as a singular being awaken. We go deep, y'all, and yet, I feel like we barely scratched the surface. Perhaps we'll ask Caverly to come back and share more!Make sure you listen all the way to the end. Caverly leads a 20-minute guided meditation inviting us to reflect and create awareness around all the self-imposed beliefs we hold onto about our separateness. When love feels scarce, we are conditioned to slip into survival mode. We cling to our beliefs about who we are in order to feel safe, to compensate for the belief that we are lacking. But seeing these conditioned habits for what they are can help create pathways for returning, for remembrance, for releasing into our inherent belonging. This mindful journaling practice guides you in bringing any judgments or unmet needs into your conscious awareness, where they can be healed. In this episode Bill interviews Spiritual Teacher and author Caverly Morgan and the focus will be her newest book The Heart of Who We Are, which is endorsed by many spiritual leaders including Rupert Spira.“Transcendence and transformation. In The Heart of Who We Are, Caverly deftly holds two seemingly opposing truths—our shared being of oneness whose nature is peace, and our shared world of apparent separation and its suffering—and invites us to explore how our true nature might find its fullest expression in both ourselves and the collective. This beautiful and courageous book not only provides a way for us to explore who we are and how we are in the world but stands as a shining example of what it means to do both.”-Rupert Spira, teacher of nonduality, author of The Nature of Consciousnessand Being Aware of Being AwareLearn more about the The Awareness Podcast and access show notes for every episode at: www.teachersofgod.org/podcastLearn more about The Teachers of God Foundation at: www.teachersofgod.org Original music by Omashar

In 2014, the American Psychological Association deemed teens, during the school year, the most stressed group of people in the United States. Teens experience stress much the way adults do, but do not yet have the skills and mechanisms to effectively work with it. To address this dilemma, Peace in Schools launched the first for-credit high school mindfulness course in the nation in 2014 in collaboration with Portland’s Wilson High School to great success. Today their program is also available to high school students at Rosemary Anderson, Lincoln and Cleveland High Schools and will be available this coming school year in Madison, Franklin and Alliance Meek High Schools, all as for credit elective courses. Caverly Morgan founded Peace in Schools and leads the Peace in Schools teaching team, develops the secular mindfulness curriculums, and works directly with teens. Caverly has been practicing mindfulness since 1995, including eight years in a monastic setting. She also offers awareness practice for adults though her nonprofit One House of Peace. Caverly is known for the insight, passion and humor she brings to her transformative work with students of all ages. Listen in to learn about this innovative and effective semester long program for teens and the resources it provides. - See more at: http://kboo.fm/media/51016-peace-schools-bringing-mindfulness-teens-interview-caverly-morgan#sthash.x1DB0Cfs.dpuf
