Instead of going from zero to 100, mindfulness helps me shift in the moment. We choose and reset and take a breath. Thoughts On Breathing Regarding breathing, I will share a quote by Joan Burry Sanko [not clear who this author is]. She's written many wonderful books. I met her at a conference many years ago. And she talks about how the breath is always with you. And I love to remind my clients and colleagues and also myself. My breath is always with me wherever I go. I take a breath to read and choose to clear, and it's a powerful reminder of how powerful our breath is to guide us and comfort us and aerate our lungs and our brain. Bullying Story The story that comes to mind is actually one that I experienced as a child. And when I was growing up, the word bullying wasn't used as much as it is today. And I can say, with all the love in the world, my mother's in heaven now. But at times my mother could be a bully. And I feel mindfulness would have helped me a lot. It also would have helped her. So, I love that mindfulness and mindful self-compassion are being woven into school curriculums, even elementary schools. Back to the power and mindfulness of stopping and pausing and reseting instead of going into react. I feel strongly that embedding tools of quieting the mind and body, stopping and taking a breath, and resetting are good for people of all ages in every culture, wherever you live. Before we get into the episode, I wanted to let you know about an interview I did on the Optimize Yourself podcast, hosted by my friend Zack Arnold. He's actually doing a three part series on chronic pain specifically related to how it affects creative professionals — so I highly recommend that you check it out! The series will consist of three experts talking about chronic pain from different perspectives. Zack interviewed a bodyworker and Somatic Movement Instructor (Julie Fahrbach) who explains how to release emotions from the body and get your system out of fight or flight. He also spoke with a medical doctor and mindfulness meditation teacher (Christiane Wolf) who uses mindfulness-based practices to change our relationship to pain. And in my interview with Zack, you'll hear an extended conversation about my personal journey with chronic pain from my days as a reality tv editor to how I ended up where I am today as a chronic pain therapist. You'll hear parts of my story that you probably haven't heard before and you'll hear me coach Zack through some of his own pain story while also learning some of the tools and techniques that I use to unwind tension in stress from my body. My episode of the Optimize Yourself podcast aired on Tuesday July 11 and you can find it by going to optimizeyourself.me/podcast or searching Optimize Yourself on your podcast app of choice! ••• And now for today's episode! A short while back, I received a message from someone whose work I was familiar with, but we'd never spoken before. And she shared a story with me that I thought was just perfect for this podcast. It's a story about her journey from chronic pain to passion. And that person is Fleur Chambers. Fleur is a multi-award-winning meditation teacher, Creator of The Happy Habit app, author of the book Ten Pathways and her second book Wholehearted Confidence and she's also a philanthropist. Using her experience of living with chronic pain, Fleur is helping others to see that happiness isn't an imaginary place free of disappointment, regret, insecurity or any other uncomfortable emotion. In contrast, real happiness is the ability to live wholeheartedly alongside our challenges and to learn from them. With proceeds from The Happy Habit funding charitable grassroots projects around the world, Fleur is using meditation as a tool for social change. She believes that we meditate not only to alleviate our own suffering, but also to improve the lives of others. The personal story that Fleur shared with me is all about the fears that come up and create symptoms just as we're about to share our creative gifts with the world. And I hope that hearing her talk about how she navigates those experiences will inspire you with the courage to share your creative gifts as well. In this incredible conversation with Christiane Wolf, MD, PhD, we separate out different kinds of pain. Christiane shows us how by learning to differentiate between types of pain, we can plan an appropriate course of action. We discuss when the approaches of mindfulness and compassion may help and how to implement them to feel less stress and suffering when experiencing uncomfortable sensations. Christiane and I also talk about birthing pain, the differences in giving birth in Germany (her home country) and the United States, and how that changes the pain experience. We also touch on the basics of and importance of sangha and Christiane's striking balance of the scientific and spiritual realms and ability to translate each one to the other. Was ist Internal Family System (IFS) eigentlich? Chronic pain can be debilitating, so we often look for ways to mask or medicate the symptoms. Unfortunately, the medical approach to pain management can sometimes lead to even worse problems. There is now a growing body of research showing the efficacy of mindfulness practices where you literally observe and accept your pain, rather than cover it up. It isn't a panacea, but the clinical results are significant enough that mindfulness is now increasingly being integrated into hospital approaches. This week's guest is a medical doctor turned mindfulness teacher and trainer. Listen and learn: How mindfulness can help you separate yourself from your pain Why we tend to mask and medicate rather than confront pain challenges The importance of natural, non-pharmaceutical interventions How mindfulness can be practiced in a secular way or easily integrated into your existing faith Links Dr. Wolf's Site ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Wolf started her career as a gynecologist in Berlin. She began studying and practicing Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). She later trained as a Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher and a MBSR teacher trainer. Sit in meditation for a few minutes and you're likely to experience pain, either physical or psychological. Hang around the meditation scene for very long, and you are likely to hear the expression, “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” And that's what this episode is all about— boosting your pain tolerance through meditation. Because pain really is inevitable, but can you reduce your suffering through mindfulness and compassion? Our guest today, Christiane Wolf, argues ‘yes'. She is a physician turned mindfulness and compassion teacher and teacher trainer. She is an authorized Buddhist teacher in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition, teaching classes and retreats worldwide, and she's also the author of Outsmart Your Pain: Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind. In this episode we talk about:Meditation techniques that offer us a better relationship to painHow to work with the physicality of painThe stories we tell ourselves about our painAnd seeing pain as an opportunityFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/christiane-wolf-rerunSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Do you struggle with chronic pain in your body? Are you searching for an alternative approach to pain rather than running from it or struggling with it? In this episode of “Your Life in Process,” Diana discusses mindfulness-based approaches to pain with internationally known mindfulness teacher, Dr. Christiane Wolf. A NOTE ON THE SOUND QUALITY: I wanted to let you know that this episode has some poor audio quality on my part. I was playing around with the knobs before I recorded and ended up getting a fuzzy version of me throughout. I hope that you will give me some grace on that. Because I love the organic conversation back and forth with Christiane and myself. So focus your attention on that and allow for a little bit of imperfection. That's what we need to all do for each other. About Christiane WolfChristiane Wolf, M.D., Ph.D. is a former physician, internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. I know we're just getting started. We're going to take a break, just when we're getting started. I want us to learn how to go hard, push, and put our all into something. Then we can practice some deep rest and restoration so that what we've learned together can get integrated into our lives. Rest Like a ComposerOne of the ways that I've been thinking about rest recently is like a piece of music. When a composer puts a piece of music together, they put in quarter notes and half notes and full note rests. The quarter note rests are just like those little mini micro-breaks we give ourselves whether they're eye breaks to look away from our screen or something outside a window, or whether they're breath breaks, where we slow our breath down to take a long inhale and long. Or maybe it's a movement break where you put everything aside, you plug in your ear pods on this little bonus episode and you take a walk around the block. We all need these quarter note rests in our day to reset our minds, reset our bodies and reconnect with ourselves. Half-note rests are a little bit bigger. Those are things like paying attention to your sleep, making sure you're prioritizing it, making room for it, preparing for it, and creating a ritual around it. Half note rests are things like taking a moment to just lie on the floor, or maybe taking an hour mid-day to go to a yoga class or an hour at the end of the day, to play a board game with your kids, or maybe some friends. And then there's those full-note rests that we all need. We need breaks. We need weekends where we don't talk about work. We need vacations. And for me, I need retreats. It's one of the ways that I get my full-note rest. I step out of life for a little bit, go into nature, get back in my body with some good movement get some good sleep, and just stop producing. So take some of those quarter note rests, take some half note rests and some full note rests. I will see you back here refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to share with you. Looking Forward to Season 2When I come back on Season 2, we are going to have quite a lineup. Steven Hayes is going to be on the show, talking about process-based approaches to living well. The renowned meditation teacher and physician Christiane Wolf is going to explore physical pain, ultra marathon running, and how to use body awareness to relate differently to our physical form. And Brad Stulberg is going to join us and talk about how to get grounded. So I can't wait to share those episodes with you. Thank you for listening to Season 1 of YLIP. We are resting before we begin Season 2. Please join us in a well-deserved rest. Sit in meditation for a few minutes and you're likely to experience pain, either physical or psychological. Hang around the meditation scene for very long, and you are likely to hear the expression, “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” And that's what this episode is all about -- boosting your pain tolerance through meditation. Because pain really is inevitable, but can you reduce your suffering through mindfulness and compassion? Christiane Wolf argues ‘yes'. She is a physician turned mindfulness and compassion teacher and teacher trainer. She is an authorized Buddhist teacher in the Insight (Vipassana) meditation tradition, teaching classes and retreats worldwide, and she's also the author of the new book “Outsmart Your Pain”. In this conversation, we talk about meditation techniques that offer us a better relationship to pain, how to work with the physicality of pain, the stories we tell ourselves about our pain, and seeing pain as an opportunity.
