This time, we listened to and read Ringing the Changes by Robert Aickman. Robert Fordyce Aickman was an English conservationist and writer. As a conservationist, he played a key role in preserving and restoring England's inland canal system. As a writer, he is best known for his supernatural fiction, which he described as "strange stories."On his mother's side, Aickman was the grandson of the prolific Victorian novelist Richard Marsh. Marsh is known for his occult thriller The Beetle, a book as popular in its time as Bram Stoker's Dracula. Aickman is best known for his 48 "strange stories," published across eight volumes.Podcast favorite Jeremy Dyson has adapted Aickman's work in various forms. Listen to episode 8 for our most in-depth look at Jeremy's work. A musical version of Aickman's short story The Same Dog, co-written by Dyson and Joby Talbot, premiered in 2000 at the Barbican Concert Hall.In 2000, Dyson, along with his League of Gentlemen collaborator Mark Gatiss, adapted Ringing the Changes into a BBC Radio Four play, airing exactly twenty years after the CBC adaptation. This adaptation was intended to start a tradition of 'An Aickman Story for Halloween,' but unfortunately, it did not continue. Dyson also directed a 2002 short film based on Aickman's story The Cicerones, with Gatiss as the principal actor. It is this Dyson/Gatiss adaptation that we listened to for this episode. (Thanks to ‘Mysterious Magpie' for putting this up on YouTube so we could listen to it)The cast includes George Baker as Gerald. Baker is known for his roles in The Dam Busters as Flight Lieutenant D. J. H. Maltby, Tiberius in I, Claudius, D.C.I. Wexford in The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Decider Logrin in the Doctor Who story Full Circle, and appearances in two James Bond films. Fiona Allen plays Phrynne. Allen is an actress and writer known for 24 Hour Party People, Smack the Pony, and Poirot. She has been married to Michael Parkinson since April 2001. This surprised Ross when writing this until he discovered it wasn't ‘That' Michael Parkinson (see episode 18 of this podcast for more about him). Instead, it's the patronymic son of the chat show legend, whom she met while he was working as a location manager on Smack the Pony. Confused? I am! Friend of the show Mark Gatiss appears as the Narrator and Mr. Pascoe, the landlord. Commandant Shortcroft is played by Michael Cochrane, known for his role in 280 episodes of The Archers, Arnold (Private Godfrey) Ridley in We're Doomed! The Dad's Army Story, and for playing three different characters in three different episodes of Heartbeat.Barbara Shelley plays Mrs. Pascoe. Known to our podcast listeners for her portrayal of Barbara Judd in the Hammer version of Quatermass and the Pit (reviewed in episode 34), she also starred in The Village of the Damned (which we need to review soon), Dracula: Prince of Darkness (one of the Dracula films we still need to cover), Rasputin: The Mad Monk, The Gorgon, and the 1958 Hammer wannabe Blood of the Vampire, written by Jimmy Sangster. She also appeared in both Blake's 7 and Doctor Who— as I'm sure James is dying to know, we can tell you she played Sorasta in Planet of Fire and was considered for the role of Tanha in Snakedance… but that's enough Doctor Who for now… Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Ajahn Dhammasiha responds to a question on the meaning of Bhava Taṇhā & Vibhava Taṇhā. In the four Noble Truths, the Buddha explains three forms of craving (taṇhā): Sensual Craving (Kāma Taṇhā) Carving for Existence/Being/Becoming (Bhava Taṇhā) Craving for Annihilation/Non Existence (Vibhava Taṇhā) Craving is the cause of suffering, so we have to abandon all three types of craving to realize freedom from death and dukkha. Ajahn Dhammasiha offers some reflections especially on the meaning of 'craving for non-existence". He also makes some suggestions how emotions like anger can feed our sense of 'being', and how bhava taṇhā is closely related to the delusion of self, I and mine. The Four Noble Truths are:1st Noble Truth (dukkha): There is pain, loss, sickness, and death in life.2nd Noble Truth (taṇhā): The cause of suffering is reactive, repetitive craving.3rd Noble Truth (nirodha): There is an end to suffering.4th Noble Truth (magga): There is a path leading to the end of suffering which is the Eightfold Path. This talks closes with a guided compassion meditation which begins at 32 minutes. The median life expectancy for a man living in the United States is roughly 80 years. That works out to 960 months, 4,160 weeks, or about 29,000 days. Rick is sneaking up on 70 years old, which means, on average, he's got about 10 years – or 520 weeks – left. Putting the time we have left into simple numbers can be both a bit daunting and remarkably clarifying. Although life is unpredictable and largely outside of the realm of our control, we can learn to meet these ups and downs with less reactivity, with less craving and clinging. When we become reactive, we make life harder than it has to be. Mindfulness helps us to step back and observe when reactivity arises, without taking the bait. I hope you enjoy!

Estamos vivendo uma crise humanitária. Temos números de guerra. Nos enfraquecemos constantemente. Estamos expostos.

This is a short musing about the concept of thirst and attachment as it relates to religious traditions and spirituality. Let go or get dragged. A pretty harsh statement to say the least. But it is our craving, our thirst, our attachments or tanhā that lead to suffering. But there is an end to suffering. And one aspect of the means to that end is to let go. This can be likened in the Christian tradition to the kenosis of Christ; the emptying of oneself. When we do this, we slip below our superficial personality to be conformed into the image of the Son, or to recognize our Buddha nature. So it is really up to us. Will we cling to our suffering? Or will we let it go? Today’s poem was written by a poet who was more famous for her stardom in Hindi Films than her poetry. Born as Mahjabeen Bano, she was better known by her screen name, Meena Kumari. She ruled the Hindi Film industry with her acting and sublime beauty for four decades. She wrote beautiful poetry under the nom-de-plume, “Naaz” and was poetry in motion on screen. Her personal life was as tragic as the characters that she portrayed on screen. Behind the glitter of silver screen, she struggled with domestic violence, an insecure husband and alcohol addiction before passing away at the young age of 38. She was an autodidact and taught herself English, Hindi and Urdu in the absence of a formal education. This poem reflects her loneliness in a world of fame, arc lights and stardom. #MeenaKumari #Meena #Hindi #Urdu #India #Bollywood #poetry --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amit-singh073/support

It’s turning toward the waves that crash toward us. The Buddha described this as four ennobling truths: (1) Life is sometimes unsatisfactory; (2) The source of our experience of discomfort is craving (tanha); (3) When we abandon the craving, suffering ceases; (4) There is a path we can follow to cultivate well-being.Support the show (http://www.easingawake.org/donations.html)

Undefended Dharma with Mary Stancavage

People often think that desire is a dirty word in Buddhism, but the teachings point to two distinct types of desire. Tanha is the desire that leads to craving. Chanda is the wholesome desire that leads to contentment and well-being. Mary discusses the difference between the two in this dharma talk.Recorded May 11, 2019
