Passion is often a powerful force, driving individuals to give selflessly of their time and expertise. For Erin Carey, coaching the Wilson High School's girls' basketball team was a labor of love.  The United States is awash in gun violence. The U.S. has over 30,000 gun deaths per year, according to the FBI's 2019 Crime in the U.S. report. The report also says firearms were used in 73.66% of murders in the country. After the massacres in Uvalde and Buffalo, where the shooters legally obtained high-powered rifles to carry out their attacks, President Joe Biden called for the banning of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Saying, “for God's sake how much more carnage are we willing to accept?” He also said if there can't be a ban on assault rifles the age requirement should be raised from 18 to 21.In Long Beach, a group of students has decided they can't sit back and accept the violence anymore.Anika Stewart, Aaliyah Rincon and Dayne Rash Arguello—who attend Wilson High School—and Tom Wood—who attends Poly High School—organized a walkout on Friday, June 3, in an effort to let students use their voices to demand change. We will take a deeper dive into their views—and what it's like to be a student in the age of school shooters—on this week's "The Word."https://lbpost.com/news/how-the-black-community-can-process-stress-and-trauma-from-the-buffalo-shooting

I have a special episode of the podcast this week. I'm sharing an interview I did on holistic dentistry inside the Hormone Healing Membership* with Dr. Kelly Blodgett. Dr. Blodgett is a native Oregonian who attended grade school through high school in Southwest Portland. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Oregon and completed his pre-doctoral sciences at Portland State University. Dr. Blodgett attended the OHSU School of Dentistry and graduated in June of 1999 where he earned the “Going the Extra Mile” award from his own classmates. Throughout his career, he's become a recognized leader in minimally-invasive dentistry, dental lasers, computerized dental technology, and holistic care. He has been featured in numerous dental journals, on television, and in magazines for the innovative care he provides. He is truly a modern pioneer in progressive dental care. Dr. Blodgett and his wife, Julie, have been married since 1994 and have two beautiful daughters: Sara, born in 2002, and Megan, born in 2005. They reside in Southwest Portland, just up the hill from his high school alma mater, Wilson High School. The reason Dr. Blodgett's work is so appealing to me is because of how he truly takes the word holistic to heart. He wants to know everything he can about a patient and take the whole person, their mental/emotional/physical health history, and how they feel into consideration when advising. Advising is the keyword here. He wants his patients to decide what is best and fully respects each and every decision. That's not easy to find, even in functional medicine. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!*If you're wondering what this membership is, it's a special space on the internet for those that have gone through the Master Your Minerals course and want more support. 1/13/20 On today's episode we welcomed WILSON High School and Cal State Long Beach alum, FCA area representative and world champion paper airplane distance thrower Jake Hardy. After getting a litany of mistakes by the hosts out of the way (Jacob now for sure knows where Jake H. went to high school...), we were all able to share about our weekends in relative detail. Summary: Go see "1917", don't throw footballs in crowded areas, and be on the look out for a local wiffle ball game (0:00-27:40). From there conversation got really sporadic: board games, bowling, and Polish ping pong (27:40-45:50). Once we finally got focused on Jake H., he told us about his family before laying out his work history in the Angels' and Chargers' organizations and transitioning into his current position with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, with some fun behind-the-scenes stories along the way (45:50-1:14:00). Jake had to leave for work, so Jacob and Jake H. were left to their own devices. After some stories about driving (1:14:00-1:27:00). The majority of the rest of the episode was Jake H. giving a full-detail recounting of his adventure traveling to Austria last May and competing in Red Bull's Paper Wings World Finals, earning the distinction of longest airplane thrower in the world. Yeah. You'll want to give that story a listen. (1:27:00-2:03:55). We ended with a short preview of the NCAA Football Championship Game between Clemson and LSU (2:03:55-2:10:10). It skewed long again, but it's worth it for the final story! Check it out and share it!

We're talking to the busiest guy in Our Town, the man who knows all, sees all, and tells all, but nobody knows him. That's why we're so delighted to have him and a chance to talk to the real Marty Aronoff. Marty, welcome to Our Town! Marty Aronoff: I'm glad to be here, Andy. Looking forward to it. A Ockershausen: I don't know how we caught you on the rebound, but you're not doing a game tonight or you didn't do one last night, but you got one coming up, right? Marty Aronoff: I'm doing game five, the deciding game, tomorrow night for Fox Sports. The Dodgers at the Nationals with Kenny Albert A Ockershausen: Right here in Wheatey-ville, right? Marty Aronoff: Absolutely, and it's one of the big events in Washington sports in a long time. A Ockershausen: Oh, I tell you Marty, the town will be going crazy. I'm sorry that they have to take this fifth game, I thought they were going to win. I just felt so good at getting Kirshel out of there was a made thing, but it didn't happen. Anyway Marty, Janice just pointed out to me, being a dummy, I assume everybody knows Marty Aronoff is the world’s greatest statistician. Marty Aronoff: Thank you. A Statistician A Ockershausen: Now tell us what a statistician is. Marty Aronoff: I sit right next to the announcers at every event I work. I work mainly with ESPN, I do their Monday night football, I do college football for them. I do the NBA, major league baseball. I'm observing the game. I give notes to the announcers that I don't want to ever break up their rhythm when they're saying things over the air, but as I make observations I'll give them notes. If something happens that I think sort of has a historical bent to it, something today that may have related to a game in past years, I'll pass that on. I'm talking to the people down in the production truck, in the television truck, about graphics we can put up to supplement what the announcers are saying. I've been doing it full-time since 1983 and I actually started part-time in 1975, so it's been a long and fruitful career. A Ockershausen: Long and wonderful career! Now tell us about the early days. You are a Washingtonian. A native. Wilson High School, Penn State and Northwestern Marty Aronoff: I am, I was born in Washington, I went to Wilson High School. A Ockershausen: It's our neighbor up here, WMAL. Marty Aronoff: Absolutely, and I graduated in '56, I went to Penn State for four years, majored in mathematics. Then went to Northwestern and got a masters in business, and I came back here to Washington, I worked for the federal government for 17 years at mainly what was called the National Bureau of Standards. A Ockershausen: I remember that so well, my god. Marty Aronoff: Then I started doing the statistics part-time as sort of a hobby with a friend of mine, Warner Wolf, and loved it so my I decided to see if I could be maybe the first person to make a full-time career out of it. A Ockershausen: Why would you go to Penn State? Does that offer some course that, obviously is has nothing to do with statistics, but you picked Penn State, obviously. Marty Aronoff: Well, having lived in the city all my life and my closest friend who I was with in high school had been admitted to Penn State. He said, "You know, Marty, you might like to go to this school." I went up there with him and loved the campus. A Ockershausen: You could ride back and forth together. Marty Aronoff: Yeah. A Ockershausen: Not a bad idea at that time. Marty Aronoff: Absolutely. A Ockershausen: That was in the early '60's, right? Marty Aronoff: '56 to '60, I was there.

Wilson High School boys basketball head coach Matt Coldren tells Zeke about his team's players and prospects this season. The Bulldogs, who won the Berks Conference championship in 2013-2014, return a lot of players from last year's 18-11 young team that made a run to the District 3-AAA semifinals. “We had lots of talented boys without lots of experience,” Coldren tells Zeke. Wilson has lost its top player from last season, Christian Sload, to graduation. “He was one of the best overall athletes I’ve ever coached,” says Coldren of Sload, also an outstanding soccer player and track star. Wilson starts playing its basketball games a week after most schools because Coldren often has numerous football players on his roster and Wilson football usually makes a deep playoff run. “Typically it takes us a little while to get started,” Coldren said of football and basketball overlapping. “We may win games early but they’re ugly. I love having kids who play multiple sports. I wouldn’t have it any other way. But I can’t tell you a season that I’ve had everybody at practice at the start.” Coldren, in his 16th season as Wilson's head coach, talks to Zeke about his team's annual rivalry with Reading High for the Division I title. Coldren explains to Zeke why he made a rare gesture after losing to the Red Knights in last season's conference semifinals, asking Reading coach Rick Perez if he could address his team. “It’s a huge rivalry but it’s a respect rivalry,” Coldren says. “Last year, of all the years I’ve coached, that was the best team they’ve ever had. It was a special group of kids.” Coldren tells Zeke that the PIAA's reclassification, moving Wilson from 4A to 6A, essentially still groups the Bulldogs with the same schools. Coldren also talks about coaching his son Kyle, a junior guard who has moved up from last year's JV team. “I am looking forward to coaching him and getting to spend a lot of time with him in a different aspect than at home,” Coldren tells Zeke.

Teens experience stress much the way adults do, but do not yet have the skills and mechanisms to effectively work with it. To address this dilemma, Peace in Schools launched the first for-credit high school mindfulness course in the nation in 2014 in collaboration with Portland’s Wilson High School to great success. Today their program is also available to high school students at Rosemary Anderson, Lincoln and Cleveland High Schools and will be available this coming school year in Madison, Franklin and Alliance Meek High Schools, all as for credit elective courses. Now in his 52nd season of coaching at Wilson High School, Roy Snyder has had an unparalleled career in sustained excellence. With over 500 wins in dual meets, Snyder has won four state championships, 15 district championships and 28 league championships. The retired health and physical education teacher and athletic director at Wilson also has coached 15 individual state champions. Snyder tells Zeke that "I get more satisfaction from developing a mediocre swimmer into a good swimmer than from developing a naturally gifted swimmer into an outstanding swimmer." Under Snyder, West Lawn has become a swim capital. "We have a comprehensive swim program, teaching swimming, youth group programs, coaching kids for competition," Snyder tells Zeke. He still loves going to the pool every day because he loves working with the kids. He is coaching in his second pool at Wilson, a state-of-the-art facility now in its second season -- a facility that is used heavily by the Wilson community. Swimming is a sport of repetition, but the routine over five decades of coaching never gets old for Snyder. "The kids keep me going, working with the kids," Snyder explains. "Seeing them improve ... taking average or below average kids and making them pretty good. It's all about team. Everybody counts." When Zeke asks Snyder what has changed the most in swimming over his five decades, Snyder responds: "Weight training. Our kids are in the weight room about three times a week."

Roy Snyder tells Zeke how stressing the importance of team has been paramount to the remarkable success of the Wilson High School boys swim team this season and in previous seasons. "It's probably the team approach we have with our coaching staff," Snyder says. "And we have a great feeder program." This year's team has remarkable depth, which has enabled it to overcome the lack of individual superstars. "We have a great dual meet team," Snyder said of his Bulldogs. "This is the type of team I enjoy coaching the most." While Snyder in recent years coaches only the boys team, for many years he coached boys and girls. The legacy of the program's success draws swimmers like a magnet. "We have about 25 to 30 divers and about 200 swimmers," Snyder explains. In an era when many coaches stress focusing on one sport, Snyder says, "I encourage kids to do multiple sports. At Wilson, swimming is a seasonal sport, not year round." When Zeke asks what are the ingredients of a good swimmer, Snyder replies: "There is an ideal physique (length) but desire and motivation are more important. A lot of it has to do with a natural feel for the water and enthusiasm for the sport.
