We dig into heart posture and attitudes about being told what to do. Have you ever noticed how we as believers can talk a good game about "authority" until someone tells US what to do??? #71 – Community as the Curriculum with Dave Cormier

Modern Learners

So in case you may be new to the pod, each month we take on a different theme from four different angles, and this week, we're looking at our theme of community through our third lens, that of classroom practice. As in what would the classroom look like if the community itself was the curriculum? That's a question that this week's guest Dave Cormier has been grappling with for over a decade. His work around "rhizomatic learning" has generated a ton of new thinking about what classrooms might be in the modern world. In this model, curriculum is not driven by predefined inputs from experts; it is constructed and negotiated in real time by the contributions of those engaged in the learning process. That idea fits pretty neatly into the self-determined learning world of the Internet where we can choose our teachers, our information sources, and our experiences in profound new ways. But it's not as neat of a fit into traditional classroom systems, structures and, of course, curriculum. In this episode, Dave and I talk about what a "rhizomatic" learning environment is like, the importance of language in change, the difference between complicated and complex, and the struggle to shift students away from being experts as students to, instead, be experts as learners. I'm sure it will tweak your thinking in good ways. Fall Professional Learning Don't forget to check out our two big professional learning opportunities coming this fall for those of you who are wanting to continue pushing your thinking and expand your global PLC in the process. Our 9th Cohort of Change School starts on September 30th, and at this moment we have a few seats left. It's an 8-week intensive dive into how the world is changing, the ways in which schools are already changing, and how you can lead a long-term, sustainable change initiative in your school or in your community. And also check out the five Modern Learners Labs that we have on the calendar for October through January. My friends Gary Stager and Homa Tavangar and I will be in five different cities up and down the east coast doing these 2-day events that will exhaust and inspire you in very good way. Get all the details at on our Labs page. And finally, as always, at the end of my conversation with Dave, I'll be back with three things that you can do right now to move your schools and classrooms to a deeper sense of community. Don't forget, if you like what you hear today, please head on over to iTunes and give us some love via a review and rating, and I hope that you'll continue the conversation around story with us in our modernlearners community. Cheers everyone...thanks so much for listening.

#67 – Creating a New Story of Learning With Mary Anne Moran and John Clements

Modern Learners

If you listened two our previous two podcasts on the topic of "story" I think you'll agree that we educators are at an interesting spot when it comes to the way we think and talk about education and schooling moving forward. The old story that you have to be somewhere at a particular time with a particular teacher with a particular group of kids who are your same age from your same neighborhood to learn a particular curriculum at the same pace and be assessed the same way is breaking, not only because it makes little sense in a learning context, but because the world doesn't operate that way any longer. The question is, what do we as educators do to create a new story, a new way of thinking about what the experience of school looks and feels like for this latest generation of kids? Few educational leaders are better positioned to answer that question than Mary Anne Moran and John Clements, co-principals of Nipmuc High School in Upton, Mass. Over the last three years, they have led a powerful process to create a coherent story of learning for their students that is increasingly different from the one most schools are telling. John and Mary Anne are alums of our Change School program, but more impressively they were named 2017 state principal and 2016 assistant principal of the year respectively. And their high-energy, inclusive approach to generating important and powerful conversations around learning in their school community are unparalleled in my experience. As you'll hear in this conversation, while every school story and journey is unique, there are a number of important starting points that all leaders can take right away to begin the process of creating and telling a new story of learning. And hey - we know you'll learn a lot from listening to John and Mary Anne in this episode, but if you're looking for a deeper learning experience, why not enroll in the course they've designed, which is available NOW: Launching Modern Learning: First Year Strategies for Change Creating an aspirational vision for school is exciting and inspiring work; however, it can be difficult to know where to begin in the journey to reimagine school. You need support in your effort to redesign your school as well as actionable strategies that can be borrowed, adapted, and put into place. Our Launching Modern Learning course is designed to help you go from ideas to action. Learn firsthand from John and Mary Anne through the engaging modules they've designed for you. There's much to read, see, and do in this course. The course content will challenge your thinking, inspire you, and leave you with practical takeaways you can implement immediately. It's the perfect learning opportunity for school teams, too! No matter your "first" - first time in a new leadership position, first year launching a change initiative, or in your first steps of reimagining the school experience for your students, this course is for YOU. This week on the Finding Impact Podcast, we are talking to Solonia Treodos, Co-founder of The Change School, who describes why social entrepreneurs need a clear fundraising strategy and goal before starting their fundraising activities. Solonia shares her journey of fundraising for The Change School, with lessons from her experience of almost closing a fundraising deal, changing course and walking away from the deal and coming back to it later with a clear strategy. On this podcast, you will learn: How Change School helps transform organizations and individuals by helping them re-connect with their values, re-design their work and re-define success as authentic leaders. Change School thus equips and empowers people to navigate uncertainty and embrace change during the transition or transformation that they are going through. About Change School's journey of testing various offline business models such as: creating immersive retreats for people to re-connect with themselves while enabling a peer-to-peer and community learning experience; to creating Change School mind gyms for bite-sized learning to develop mental resilience; and creating bespoke experiential transformation programs for organizations. How the founders encountered the growth and scale challenges of Change School by evolving and developing an online delivery model of working with its vast pool of trainers and experts while drawing from the expertise of its offline immersive retreats and retaining the Change School brand personality. Why social entrepreneurs should have a strategy of pro-actively approaching investors for funding and alignment with business growth plans rather than just nosediving into fundraising re-actively in trying to impress investors, while not losing focus on the business vision and operating matters such as managing cash flows properly. Finally, you will learn about Change School's online courses and tutorials for anyone needing resources and additional support to managing change and transitions. Check out the free online course at https://findingimpact.com/changeschool, which is a 5-day visioning challenge for teams or individuals to help find clarity of vision in careers or lives.  Links to Resources: The Change School Personal Website of Solonia Teodros Free Online Course – Vision Your Bold Career Move  Connect with Solonia: LinkedIn Twitter

As I wrote about in last week's column, this new book titled Timeless Learning by Ira Socol, Pam Moran, and Chad Ratliff may just be the best book I've read about how to change schools and bring all the things we know are important about progressive learning to traditional public and private schools. In this interview, I get a chance to talk to Ira and Pam about a number of topics: Why this is the right time for progressive education to take root The challenges of moving centuries old practice in classrooms forward Some of the best ways to make change happen in schools And what skills, literacies and dispositions kids need to have to thrive in the modern world. I know you're going to enjoy the conversation. The illustration at right, by the way, was done by Linda Ashida, a Change School alum who was watching and listening on Facebook during our live interview. (Click the image for a larger version.)

Jackson Holm is a senior at Grand Forks Red River High School. He's a National Merit Scholar finalist who enjoys computer science, theatre and takes an innovations class from teacher Eric Sanders (Sanders was featured on Episode 21).Sanders says of Holm, “He has designed video games, designed and launched a high-altitude balloon (near-space balloon) in 9th grade, and trained a neural network of artificial intelligence. He did these outside of school, in spite of school. He is also a National Merit Scholar finalist. He also nearly left school last semester to move to Portland and open a vegan buffalo wing food truck. He has views about how education needs to change to applying knowledge through projects and collaboration.”Sanders said he asked Jackson what he thought about education, and he replied, "There is almost nothing that is done alone anymore. Education is focused on single-person learning." He is hopeful that education is changing in a good way.Resources:TEDx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFGU1MPd14A&t=1s http://www.ndplaylist.orghttp://www.ndunited.org/thecuttingedTwitter@thecuttinged@NDDPI@kirstenbaesler@tdintersmith@bistom@PrairiePublicEd@ndunited

There is ZERO research in the world that supports letter grading. NONE.Click To Tweet Scott Looney talks to us about grades Photo by Ian Schneider on Unsplash We are thinking outside the box today about the foundational elements of grades and high school transcripts in the US educational system. Scott Looney is the Headmaster at the Hawken School in Cleveland, Ohio, and the founder of the Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC). He discusses his attempt to get schools together and on board with a totally different way of assessing what kids do in school and how they achieve. He uses a transcript that has no numbers, but is all about competency-based achievements. The grading model was a terrible idea when it began, and it’s only become more corrupted. --@slooney #modernlearners #clclearns #changeschoolClick To Tweet Mastery Transcript Consortium Goal Scott explains what MTC is all about and how it came to be. The goal is the mastery of real-world problem-solving skills and the development of assessments based on competency and proficiency, all driven by the interests, abilities, and individual strengths of each student. Scott calls the traditional high school transcript model “a broken instrument that’s only grown more corrupt.” Colleges are realizing the inherent flaws in their system and standards of student selection, as evidenced by the quality of students they are enrolling. Scott is facing this problem head-on, and has created a transcript prototype that is opening the eyes of college admissions personnel, and there are now 160 schools in 15 countries that are part of MTC, using this new model. I think you'll find Scott to be knowledgeable and passionate about this topic of our grading system and the need for change! Kids often come to the conclusion that the system is rigged against them . . . . and they QUIT. #modernlearners #clclearns #changeschoolClick To Tweet Resources: The Future of Education: Why Hawken has to Lead www.mastery.org www.change.school Find out about Change School 4, beginning soon! www.changeleaders.community  Find out about the FREE 30-day trial! If you've enjoyed being pushed by the conversations between me and Bruce in the past, you'll definitely enjoy our latest podcast that digs into the value of teaching, not just in the modern world, but in general. After a couple of weeks of scintillating interviews with Joel Pelcyger and Conrad Wolfram, this week we spend about 40 minutes this week discussing Bruce's latest Shifting Conversations column and the tension between teachers being learners as much as they are teachers. And I read a quote from Carl Rogers' book Freedom to Learn (from which I stole the title of my latest book) where he grapples with the role of the teacher and, to get really heady, whether anything can actually be taught. It's a sentiment that I've been mulling over for quite some time. (Bruce is already there.) If agency for learning resides with the learner, what can the teacher actually "teach" if anything? It's more about the adults in the room creating the conditions under which kids can learn most powerfully and deeply. And, it's about those conditions existing for the adults as well. Some quick reminders: We're holding our next FREE webinar on December 4 on this topic as well: "From Teaching Cultures to Learning Cultures." RSVP now as we have over 350 people signed up at this writing. Our fourth Change School cohort starts in January, and we just got word that 14 leaders from the Surrey (BC) school district will be joining us! Why not think about getting your own team together and changing the world with an amazing community of over 150 global educational leaders? Registration opens in just a couple of weeks! Check out our new Changeleaders Community for even more curated conversations and news centered on reimagining schools. And finally, if you like what you're hearing on this podcast, why not head over to iTunes and give us a rating and review. (We'd sure appreciate getting into double figures at some point!) So, what does work look like for our kids: A career means a string of jobs at different companies. So workers respond in kind, thinking about how to shape their career in a world where you can expect so little from employers. In a society where market rules rule, the only way for an employee to know her value is to look for another job and, if she finds one, usually to quit. That's the conversation that Bruce and Will have in the 22nd edition of the Modern Learners Podcast. What are the larger trends when it comes to work in the future, and what are the ways in which schools and educators need to respond to those changes? We also take some time to reflect on Cohort 2 of Change School which ended last week. Greeting from San Antonio, where Bruce, Missy, and I are gathering for our second Change School retreat, our first Change School Social, and, of course, the mammoth #ISTE17 conference where something like 17K educators from around the world are getting the latest about technology and how to (or how not to) use it in the classroom. Full disclosure, ISTE is always a bit of a love hate for Bruce and I, and you'll get that sense in this episode. The conference is always heavy on tech but, in our minds, light on real learning. Rare are the discussions truly about creating agency for the learner and letting them do amazing things that change the world. (Hence the Papert quote below.) We hope you enjoy Episode #17 from ISTE17.

It's a little bit of backstory, but it's a lot of how we got to the "How?" Change.School has its genesis in the thousands of conversations that Will and Bruce have had with leaders from around the world who are guiding change projects in their schools. In fact, it's built on the idea that despite being really hard work, reimagination is possible, that the ingredients are clear, but that every school is on it's own unique path to change. Right now, building leadership capacity to do high-bar change in existing schools is where the most important work in education lies.
