In Romans 8:14, Paul writes, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.” But what does it mean to be led by the Spirit? It means that God persuades you to seek what is good because He’s given you a new heart. He doesn’t force you; he gives you the desire. You’ve been born again, and now He leads you by His word. Philippians 4:8-9 gives an illustration of this: whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, “if there’s any virtue, if there’s anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.” That’s what you do to be led by the Spirit. So make sure that you don’t fill your mind with worldly movies and songs, or senseless debates on the Internet, but be led by the Spirit in all your meditations.

A conversation with Families USA executive director Frederick Isasi is a masterclass in how to transform our expansive, inefficient, and poorly performing health care system. America spends more money per person on health care than any other nation yet our health outcomes, including some of the world's worst life expectancy and highest infant mortality rates are appalling. In this episode of Power Station, Frederick explains how we got here, starting with just a few decades ago when many families knew and had access to their healthcare providers. That was before the corporatization and consolidation of hospitals and medical practices, which have driven prices sky high and generated substandard outcomes. When hospital pricing is based not on actual costs but on exorbitant CEO salaries, we are all, as health care consumers, harmed. Many Americans opt out of care altogether, ration their medications and carry debilitating medical debt. From ending surprise medical billing to advancing fair drug pricing and hospital price transparency, to demanding access and equity, Families USA is leading a powerful and winning movement for change. Frederick wants all of us to be engaged, skeptical and activated consumers.

This is part 2 of our 2 part conversation with Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba on their new book Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care. (Part 1 is available here). In this episode we continue our conversation with Kaba and Hayes on the idea that organizing is not match-making. They each talk about organizing across difference and dealing with some of the contradictions that can come up within struggles around shared objectives. They talk about some of the differences between friends and comrades and the transformation that can happen within the waging of struggle.  We discuss about the phrase “hope is a discipline,” what it means and doesn't mean, whether hope is a useful framework for people, and the notion of active hope that weaves through a lot of the book. We also talk about seasonality within organizing, avoiding burn out, and how to deal with increasing visibility and remain responsible to the social movements you're in. Mariame Kaba is currently raising funds for the Online Abortion Resource Squad, if folks are able to support that effort we encourage them to do so.  Once again we want to thank Kelly and Mariame for having this conversation with us. You can pick up Let This Radicalize You from Haymarket Books, our friends at Massive Bookshop or your local radical bookstore. For this conversation we are honored to welcome Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba back to the podcast.  This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation on their latest book Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care. For both of these folks, I'm going to read shorter bios today, and then link to more of their work, because for each of them I could easily spend 10 to 15 minutes just talking about their backgrounds. Kelly Hayes is a Menominee author, organizer, movement educator and photographer. She is also the host of Truthout's podcast Movement Memos. Kelly is a co-founder of the direct action collective Lifted Voices and the Chicago Light Brigade. Mariame Kaba is an organizer, educator and curator who is active in movements for racial, gender, and transformative justice. She has founded or co-founded a number of organizations including but not limited to the Chicago Freedom School, Project NIA, We Charge Genocide, and Survived and Punished. She is also the author or co-author of many books and zines including but not limited to No More Police and We Do This 'Til We Free Us. Both of our guests today are known for their extensive organizing around, writing about, and advocacy of prison-industrial-complex abolition and all that entails as a liberatory horizon and arena of radical organizing. Much like this conversation, the book is a radical invitation for folks to organize and take action in big and small ways, but most importantly in collective ways. We really appreciated this book and encourage all of our listeners to get a copy. The book is an excellent resource, it's funny, it's engaging, and no matter where you are coming from I'm sure you will find it useful for your organizing, activism and radical engagement with others.  We want to extend our gratitude to Mariame and Kelly for this conversation and part 2 which we will release in a few days, for their organizing and writing and for the many ways that they invite people into abolitionist practice. We will include links to some free companions created for the book as well. These can deepen your study of the book, hopefully collectively, offer reading lists, reading questions and many other really great resources. This episode marks our first episode of June, we released seven episodes in the month of May. That is only possible because of the support of our listeners. We have been experiencing a lot of folks unable to renew pledges lately on the show, which is understandable during harder financial times. The rise of unemployment and hyperinflation can have severe consequences on society, including increasing the likelihood of radicalization. In this thought-provoking YouTube video, we explore how these economic issues can push individuals and entire populations towards radicalization, and what can be done to prevent it. The video starts by explaining the concept of unemployment and how it can impact society. When people are out of work, they lose their income, their sense of purpose, and often their self-esteem. This can lead to a feeling of hopelessness, desperation, and a sense of being left behind by society. With no prospects of finding a job, some people may turn to radical ideologies, believing that their grievances can only be addressed through radical means. The video then moves on to hyperinflation, which occurs when the prices of goods and services rise rapidly, leading to a devaluation of the currency. This can have severe consequences on society, including loss of purchasing power, shortages of essential goods, and ultimately, social unrest. When people feel that their money is becoming worthless, they may turn to alternative currencies or barter systems, or even hoard goods. Hyperinflation can also lead to political instability and can make it easier for extremist groups to gain a foothold. The video then explores how these economic issues can push people towards radicalization. When people feel left behind and forgotten by society, they may be more susceptible to the messages of extremist groups that promise them a better future. These groups may offer simple solutions to complex problems, such as blaming immigrants or minorities for the economic woes of society. This can lead to xenophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination. The video ends with a discussion on what can be done to prevent radicalization in times of economic hardship. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of unemployment and hyperinflation, such as economic policies that promote job creation and stability. It also highlights the need for social safety nets that can support those who are struggling during difficult times. Furthermore, it stresses the importance of promoting inclusive societies that value diversity and tolerance and reject extremist ideologies. Overall, this YouTube video provides a sobering and insightful analysis of how unemployment and hyperinflation can radicalize a populace. It reminds us of the importance of addressing economic issues and promoting inclusive societies to prevent the rise of extremism and ensure a brighter future for all. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/oneamerican/support

We usually value moderation. We shouldn't be too radical. Above all, we should stay away from extremes and refuse violence. Yet how can we hope to achieve success in our political struggles without endorsing a form of radicality? In this episode, the American political video maker and host of the ContraPoints channel, Natalie Wynn, explains why radical ideas are necessary to bring about a society that is the opposite of the one we live in. French political scientist Réjane Sénac invites us to differentiate radicalism from violence. Building political radicality means first of all thinking in a radical way. Pretty Heady Stuff
Rupa Marya and Raj Patel radicalize care through deep medicine and an urgent appeal for plurality

Pretty Heady Stuff

Dr. Rupa Marya and Raj Patel are the authors of a brilliant new book entitled Inflamed: Deep Medicine and The Anatomy of Injustice (https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374602529/inflamed). Dr. Rupa Marya is a specialist in internal medicine. Her research looks at the ways that social structures predispose certain groups to health or illness. And while Rupa is central to a number of revolutionary health initiatives, a few I want to make sure I mention are her work on the Justice Study–a national research effort to examine the links between police violence and health outcomes in black, brown and indigenous communities–and her work on the board of Seeding Sovereignty, an international group that promotes Indigenous autonomy in response to climate change. Raj Patel is an award-winning author and film-maker, and a Research Professor in the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. He has worked for the World Bank and the WTO, and he's also participated in global protests against both of these institutions. He's served as a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems and published on an extraordinary array of things in a variety of different fields. He's written for The Guardian, the Financial Times, the New York Times, Times of India, among many others. His first book, Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, made a big impact on me when I was a doctoral researcher. His second, The Value of Nothing, was a New York Times and international best-seller. I speak with them about our current moment, as another year begins, as the Omicron variant of COVID-19 rips through beleaguered cities, as climate fires in Colorado destroy almost a thousand homes (despite there still being snow on the ground), and as we somehow still see new year's resolutions being discussed, as they are every year without fail–even in spite of the pandemic. New year's, though, as Antonio Gramsci wrote, is less about renewal and more about “turn[ing] life and [the] human spirit into a commercial concern,” a sort of gut-check moment that is imagined to matter as a means of cultivating well-being. But it's a means of cultivating well-being where we end up thinking, as Gramsci put it, “that between one year and the next there is a break, that a new history is beginning.” But the notion of a new year's resolution seems nonsensical if we take seriously Marya and Patel's sense that health, in its truest sense, is an “emergent phenomenon of systems interacting well with other systems.” Inflamed is a book that can help us locate the roots of disease outside of the body, in an economic system that generates obscene levels of toxicity and risk. The body, they point out, is really just doing what it is so incredibly efficient at: achieving equilibrium with its environment – the problem is that the environment has been so thoroughly damaged that the work of equilibrium has become corrosive to our bodies. Marya and Patel describe Inflamed as a “call to advance health” through “vivid and radical experimentation.” Their intervention privileges anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist and anti-white-supremacist perspectives. It acknowledges how important self-care can be in a profoundly exhausting system, but reinforces this idea that self-care is still totally inadequate when the problems we face are so clearly collective. For this reason, their notion of deep medicine is all about decentring the individual, learning ways of being a “plural being,” reengaging with what Rupa describes as “old new ways of being, knowing and learning” that encourage life-preserving networks of care. What would it mean, here, to reimagine water and land protection as acts of “care,” as acts of “love toward future generations” that also, crucially, upend the logic of private property?

I am so jazzed to share this episode of The Becoming Podcast with you today.  Graeme Seabrook and I have the most vivacious and far-reaching conversation about motherhood, and I know you will enjoy it. Let me tell you about Graeme:  she is a maternal mental health expert, advocate, and community leader who helps moms and reconnect with and embrace their humanity. As a certified life coach and founder of The Mom Center, an online community exclusively for moms, she's coached over 3,000 moms on how to place their names at the top of their priority list, without guilt or shame. I first learned of Graeme and her work when I listened to her amazing interview on our mutual friend Mara Glatzel's podcast.  Graeme totally blew my mind on that podcast when she talked about the concept of what I've come to call "reclaiming the matriarchy," which essentially says that if mothers are going to do all the emotional and physical and spiritual labour for their families that they do, their needs should be centred in their families.  I've since written about that concept in my own way here. In this conversation with Graeme, we explore that theme more deeply, and she shares with me how that philosophy has evolved over the past couple of years.  We talk about the societal and cultural influences on motherhood, and she reminds all mamas that you're not broken, motherhood is.  Graeme totally debunks the idea of "putting your oxygen mask on first," which basically stopped me completely in my tracks during our interview.  We talk about what empowered motherhood looks like, the power to be found in surrender, and finally, Graeme shares how we can better understand and support BIPOC mothers.  She shares the best piece of guiding advice for this, reminding us that we, as a collective of mothers, are only as healthy and well as those of us who are most marginalized.
