In our episode 56 the Triple Vision team turns its attention to an issue which it has been wanting to highlight for some time now, the increasing rates of guide dog refusals in Canada. On December 21, 2024 Jessica Rathwell tried to board a bus from Surrey BC to Kamloops to meet her family for Christmas. To her shock the bus driver refused to let her board because she said that Jessica had not given the bus company 48 hours notice, that the bus was full and they needed to block off 4 seats in advance to accommodate her. Jessica literally took a stand, refusing to move and holding up the bus for an hour in order to demand that her rights be respected. For that she has been banned from the bus company for life. Despite over fifty years of guide dog legislation and human rights jurisprudence, many Canadian guide dog handlers are saying that guide dog refusals are getting more numerous, rather than less. Through Jessica telling her story the Triple Vision team starts to unpack this deteriorating situation of guide dog access in Canada."The only reason I left was because she told me, calmly, that I should so I did. I went with them and they put me in the back of their car like a criminal. They didn't cuff me, but they put me in the back, so I now know what the back of a cop car looks like."

Episode 403 - Corey Croft - Never be boring - I have a passion for storytelling fueled by black coffee, cigarettes, and dread About the authorCorey Croft is from Surrey BC, Canada. His use of gallows humor helps to him stumble gracefully in a meaningless world. He avoids eye contact with strangers and doesn't understand most kinds of science. As a child he was taken to church every Sunday and worried that every time it rained it would flood, biblically. As an adult, the rain is pretty good for writing and sleeping.Book: Scumbag Rehab - You hear all kinds of stories in a bar. All kinds of characters with all kinds of experiences. Booze is a mighty fuel. It brings out the best in some and the worst in every one else. If you post up on a barstool long enough, you might hear someone's entire life story, whether you asked for it or not.If that barstool happens to be plugged into the wood at the Knowlton Tavern, then the story you would be hearing might belong to James ‘Feb' February. Only at a dive bar full of the most desperate, strange societal castaways could an individual such as him share a story like his. https://amzn.to/4eu3m8TBook: Becoming Buddha - Most self-help books will describe remedies and issue lessons to escape the perverted spiral of depression and anxiety. They will aim at improving the quality of one's life and inform choices and states of mind that nurture a healthy and productive psyche. https://amzn.to/3Rx5CCwBook: The Furies - The Furies is a coming of age dark young adult fiction that takes place in the mid 1990's. It draws influences from the hip-hop culture and contains many references of the time. It is a nostalgic and gritty look at the urban underbelly of youth culture and the vulnerability of the working-class at the time. It is a harrowing tale, yet easy to relate for anyone who has ever been a teenager and experienced love, hate, pride and fear. It is a must for readers of any literary fiction genre; with compelling characters, realistic dialogue and the vivid scenery of the city. It is both heartfelt and hard-hitting, poignant and charming. https://amzn.to/4cplKhwBook: Coward: A Novel - Sam is not a coward; he is a perfect coward. He is depressed, lonely and all but set on living out his life in numb mediocrity. Lucy is a strange and powerful man with a bizarre and nefarious interest in Sammy. After a ‘chance' meeting, Lucy gifts Sam with abilities far greater than anything his uncreative imagination could've ever dreamed of. For his part, Sam must learn to control this mysterious power by either rising above his weaknesses or giving in to them entirely.https://amzn.to/3z2ASCShttps://linktr.ee/ccroft23Support the Show.___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

Nine days ago, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was killed in a targeted daylight shooting in a crowded area outside of a Sikh temple in Surrey, BC. Nijjar was a well-known community leader and pro-Khalistan activist who the Indian government has previously accused of terror offences— allegations he vehemently denied. His activism and controversial past have spawned many theories about who may have done this and why, but more than a week after his death, the public has seen little evidence to substantiate those rumours. Meanwhile, a community is in mourning, and they took to the streets on Sunday to demand answers. So what, if anything, can we say for certain at this point? And could this horrific crime spark further violence?GUEST: Sonia Aslam, reporter, CityNews Vancouver

Perhaps one of the biggest, but most under reported, stories of the summer has been the string of vandalism and serious arsonist attacks on churches of various denominations across Canada. The wave of attacks began after the story of 215 unmarked graves near the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, BC hit national media and then a similar report of 751 unmarked graves were reported at the Marieval Indian Residential School operated by the Roman Catholic Church in Saskatchewan. Initially the arsonist and vandalism attacks appeared to be isolated to churches on reserves but as the summer progressed, off reserve churches were targeted with an historic St. Jean Baptiste Church in Morinville, AB, which was a centre point to the community, being burned to the ground in the early morning on June 13th. On July 19th St. George Coptic Orthodox Church in Surrey BC, a church with no direct connection to the residential school history, was also targeted and burned to the ground. To date, it is reported that 21 churches spanning from BC to Nova Scotia have been the target of arson and dozens more than that vandalized in some way. Joining me today to shed some light on how all of this has been impacting those targeted by the arsonist attacks is Steven Faltas, a deacon from St. George Coptic Orthodox Church who was one of the first members of the congregation to be called when the fire broke out. Joining him is BC Member of Parliament Tamara Janzen who personally attended a vigil that the church held after the burning occurred. I appreciate you joining us for this very important conversation. The Roy Green Show - Maxime Bernier and his People's Party of Canada will face the electorate in Monday's federal byelections in Burnaby South, B.C. - as well as in byelections in Outremont, Quebec and York Simcoe, Ontario. This is the first A first real test for the People's Party of Canada, in its quest to form the national government in the October 21, federal election. PPC founder and leader Maxime Bernier Democracy Watch co-founder and law professor Duff Conacher continues to challenge the involvement of federal ethics commissioner Mario Dion in the Trudeau - Wilson-Raybould issue. Dion was appointed by the Trudeau cabinet and without engagement by the opposition parties as required by the Canada Parliament Act. Conacher write that "any committee of MPs is a Kangaroo Court, as they are all partisan. Fully independent investigation needed." He joins Roy to expand on this. Brian Peckford was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador for twelve years. Mr. Peckford, in two blog pieces this week, is very critical of the use of the Clerk of the Privy Council to defend the federal government in the Trudeau/Wilson-Raybould/SNC-Lavalin/PMO issue and particularly the CBC for its reporting of the situation. The National Energy Board gave TMX the green light, and there is a developing scandal in the B.C. legislature. Roy brings on CKNW host Mike Smyth to cover these issues and address how the byelection in Surrey could decide the fate of NDP leadership. Jussie Smollett continues to insist he is telling the truth, that he is the victim of a racist attack, and he has hired a legal defense to take his "I'm innocent" position to court. Meanwhile Smollett has been charged criminally as the perpetrator of a racist hoax, and was directly challenged by the Chicago Police Commissioner. Many, like Democrat Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, tweeted their immediate support for Smollett and his claim. And some voices are saying Smollett's case should still be used to attract attention to the hate directed toward the LGBTQ and black communities. First Roy speaks with Dean of Helms School of Government and author Ron Miller, to get his perspective on how the Smollett case will affect those who want to step forward with their own - Guests: Maxime Bernier, Leader of the People's Party of Canada Duff Conacher, of DemocracyWatch.ca Brian Peckford, former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador Mike Smyth. If you've enjoyed being pushed by the conversations between me and Bruce in the past, you'll definitely enjoy our latest podcast that digs into the value of teaching, not just in the modern world, but in general. After a couple of weeks of scintillating interviews with Joel Pelcyger and Conrad Wolfram, this week we spend about 40 minutes this week discussing Bruce's latest Shifting Conversations column and the tension between teachers being learners as much as they are teachers. And I read a quote from Carl Rogers' book Freedom to Learn (from which I stole the title of my latest book) where he grapples with the role of the teacher and, to get really heady, whether anything can actually be taught. It's a sentiment that I've been mulling over for quite some time. (Bruce is already there.) If agency for learning resides with the learner, what can the teacher actually "teach" if anything? It's more about the adults in the room creating the conditions under which kids can learn most powerfully and deeply. And, it's about those conditions existing for the adults as well. Some quick reminders: We're holding our next FREE webinar on December 4 on this topic as well: "From Teaching Cultures to Learning Cultures." RSVP now as we have over 350 people signed up at this writing. Our fourth Change School cohort starts in January, and we just got word that 14 leaders from the Surrey (BC) school district will be joining us! Why not think about getting your own team together and changing the world with an amazing community of over 150 global educational leaders? Registration opens in just a couple of weeks! Check out our new Changeleaders Community for even more curated conversations and news centered on reimagining schools. And finally, if you like what you're hearing on this podcast, why not head over to iTunes and give us a rating and review. (We'd sure appreciate getting into double figures at some point!) Over 15,000 unique listeners to date...THANKS!
