In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we take a look at two well-crafted antiques of cinematic yesteryear, one being a genuine article of the past and another as a vibrant reinvention of a dead artform, with 1939's The Four Feathers and 2015's The Forbidden Room. But before we dig into our double feature, we recognize there's no time like the present to indulge in a Blue Plate Special slate that celebrates the life and legacy of Donald Sutherland, speculates on what exactly the prospects of the "experiential attractions" Netflix House intends to offer, catches up on X and Pearl ahead of the trilogy-capping MaXXXine's release, warms up the half-baked yet edible tastes of Unfrosted, and takes comfort in the subtle pleasures of the newly released The Bikeriders. After ascending to hog heaven, we delight in our retro double feature: listen as we place Zoltan Korda's film into the larger canon of British adventure stories and marvel at Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson's truly transformational experiment in the lost craft, beauty, and perversity of silent cinema. [originally published on Patreon March 13, 2024] I begin the episode with the elephant in the room - the Dulles brothers owning United Fruit Company stock. I explore Sullivan & Cromwell's connections to UFC as well as the Cabot family's ownership of UFC stock, and other government insiders. Depending on your inclinations, you can tell the story of the 1954 coup from the perspective of UFC or the CIA, but as it turns out, UFC and CIA were working symbiotically the whole time and were influencing each other in complicated feedback-loop ways. I tell the story of Operation PBFORTUNE, the CIA's first attempt to overthrow the Arbenz government. Before that point, UFC hired Edward Bernays to promote the sale of bananas and to manage PR via weaponizing the Red Scare to go from the defensive to the offensive. I discuss the dire state of US journalism about Guatemala. I go into the CIA's infiltration into the American Federation of Labor's attempts to do labor organizing in Guatemala. Then came the lobbying, with UFC first buying Democrats via Tommy the Cork Corcoran, then Republicans via John Clements. They acquired Castillo Armas, of whom much will be spoken soon. Along the way, InterArmCo and Howard Hughes show up, and various Latin American countries were bought off. Arbenz outwitted the State Department's arms embargo but lost the war when their covert weapons purchase was revealed in the press. I argue that Arbenz was not the political babe in the woods or naif that he's been made out to be. Finally, I cover Guatemala's increasing isolation on the world stage before the events of June 1954. SEASON 6, EPISODE 18On this weekend's Behind the Mitten Show with Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez -- We are headed back to the island, Mackinac Island that is, and we couldn't be happier. Mackinac Island is one of our state's very special vacation spots, and we take you behind the scenes and all over the island to share all that is new for the 2024 season. We would like to thank Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, and our incredible driver Kaitlyn Mann, for transporting us from West to East, and to all points in between. We felt like royalty driving around in the rain in the wicker wedding carriage! Tune in to our special podcast with Kaitlyn about what it's like to be a carriage driver on the island, why the horses are a big part of her life, and what she loves about living on Mackinac. (LISTEN HERE.)We kick off this week with Steph Castelein from the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, who gives us an island "overview". We talk about a new development at Arch Rock which will help out weary trekkers, a fun new spot to play some old school video games, plus get updates on remodels that happened all over the island throughout the winter months. One major remodel, that has completely transformed a long-standing favorite, happened out on the West Bluff, at Stonecliffe Inn. Closed for the last two years, the Inn has undergone $40 million dollars in renovations, additions, and improvements. We get to hear all about it from Bethany McCann, the director of sales at the resort. We also got to tour the Inn, and let me tell you, it is totally fantastic. The wallpaper! The tiles! The themed rooms! New restaurants! New pool! New family cottages! It's awesome, and you don't have to stay at the Inn to experience that view from the bluff. We'll tell you just how to do that during this segment. We hopped back into our wedding carriage in a an absolute downpour and headed just a little ways down the road to that big, gorgeous wedding cake looking out over the straits, the Grand Hotel. The property was just awakening from it's winter work, and it's always fun to see what transformations have taken place. Our interview with Jeff Hess, senior VP of operations at the hotel, confirms that the new ownership team is just as in love with this beauty as Michigan is. We talk about some of the historically accurate renovations they've been working on, and ways to visit the Grand even if you aren't an overnight guest. Finally, it was back out in the rain (thankfully cozy warm under the extra blankets Katelyn provided) and headed back down to Main Street and out to East Bluff, where you are greeted by the incredible Great Lawn at Mission Point Resort. The Ware family took a big leap of faith when they purchased the resort in 2014, but Liz and her brother Mark, along with support from their father Denny, had a vision and weren't afraid of hard work. Together, they've transformed the resort into a world-class destination. This summer, look for updated menus with delicious new items from Chef John Clements at both the Round Island Kitchen and at the very lovely Chianti. Insider tip: DO NOT MISS his pimento cheese dip. We also talk about the exciting new musical show that Mission Point is hosting all summer long at the Mission Point Theater. The McCartney Years is an international touring act featuring the music of the Beatles, Wings and Sir Paul, all brought stunningly to life by Yuri Pool, who will transform and perform each Wednesday through Sunday all season. This historically accurate show sounds incredible, and something totally new to enjoy with friends of all ages this summer.Where are we going to be next week? We don't know. A Herkules című rajzfilm a Disney reneszánszának fontos állomása volt: a hatalmas várakozásokkal övezett film minden eddiginél merészebben ötvözte a 2D-s, hagyományos animációs technikákat a 3D-s digitális megoldásokkal. A mozipénztáraknál azonban alulteljesített fiú mozinézőket is megcélzó hősmítosz: Rácz Viktóriával beszélgettünk a filmről, és megpróbáltuk megfejteni, mi lehetett az oka a sikertelenségének. Kicsoda Ron Musker és John Clements, akiknek a neve egybeforrt a Disney stúdió 90-es évekbeli reneszánszával? Miért készített a rajzfilmgyár egy kimondottan komikus, kevésbé komoly történetet a fajsúlyosabb alkotások (Az oroszlánkirály, Pocahontas, A Notre Dame-i toronyőr) után? Beszélünk arról is, milyen technikákat alkalmaztak a rendezők a film elkészítése során, amelyek kiemelték a Herkulest a kortársai közül. Alaposan végignézzük a szereplőgárdát: együgyü himbo lenne a főhős, vagy árnyaltabb figura ennél? Mi teszi a szerelmét, Megarát, komplexebb karakterré a szokásosnál? Hogyan lett a James Woods által alakított Hádész az egyik legegyedibb Disney-gonosztevő? Miért egyedi a Herkules hősmítosza? John Clements is a medical practitioner whose career has spanned over 50 years. He has a heart for children in developing countries. His early career included a year running a Christian mission hospital in the Peruvian Amazon, followed by postings as Chief Medical Officer in Bangladesh and Afghanistan with Save the Children Fund. He joined the global leadership team for infant and childhood immunization at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva. Over his 17 years with the UN, he worked in around 100 countries, mostly in the developing world. He has taught public health at the postgraduate level at a number of universities. He writes extensively and has published many books, book chapters, and articles in the medical literature on public health issues. In 2003, he moved to Australia, where he worked as a consultant with several UN agencies and Australia-based international health agencies. He is an associate professor at the University of Melbourne. In 2020, he was awarded membership in the Order of Australia for his work in international health. He has two adult sons, both of whom work in the international aid sector. He was an elder in an evangelical church for a number of years before moving to house churches. His story really kicks off when he was in primary school, age 10. With a very strict school mistress who insisted they take a book out of the library every Friday and bring it back the next Friday, and by chance - by God, John took a specific book out which made him curious. It was the life story of Albert Schweitzer. He was born in 1870 in Germany, and he became a world-renowned organist. He played bars and things like that. He had a lot of success with his recordings Organist toured Europe, becoming the darling of Europe at the age of 30.He felt the call of God on his life. He went to medical school, got qualified, and spent most of the rest of his life in Gabon, Africa, the darkest continent in the world. It was a very primitive situation. He got involved, built a hospital, provided services where none were available, ran a hospital, operated it, and did incredible work.He became internationally recognized for his writings, and in 1956 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. So here was a man of great stature and moral courage who had just spoken to the deepest part of John's heart. And he was certain that he wanted to do what Albert Schweitzer did right away.John studied the right subjects at school. He went through medical school, was trained in pediatrics and obstetrics in public health and tropical medicine, and then, to his amazement, he went to dark Peru and was offered the chance of running a hospital in the Amazon by a Catholic mission organization called Jas International, operating out of Liverpool. Talking about his experience and how people from there didn't trust West Medicine and the white nurses and doctors that were running it. They regarded someone with pale skin and brown eyes as a gringo. From being referred to as a "gringo," which was an obstacle to overcome, and the fact that they were very reluctant to come to the hospital at first to then calling him El Doctoral, which was good. Fast forward to when he came back from Peru and met his wife. And just like everyone else, his faith had quite a few dips. John encourages young people who are struggling with their faith that hey need to know that it's quite normal to have a dip in their faith. John found another passion to become a chaplain and do the work of Christ, for which he eventually became an elder in a church. He also has written a book called "The Gospel Unadorn." Targeting the mature Christian in easy-to-understand language, the book explores the difference between faith alone in Christ alone and those elements of church religion that have been hoisted onto the backs of believers. Our one year show is here and it turned out as good as we had hoped. We started off hot with Paul Hall, fresh off his recent start at Bowman Gray Stadium for Hillbilly Racing. There was quite a bit of controversy there, so we enjoyed talking about that and his hopes to continue to run there, and for the SMART Mod remaining schedule. We also talked about the best stories of our first year, some things we enjoyed, great shows, good memories, and future plans. We also have a story that was recently told at a funeral that'll have you falling in the floor, as well as talking about things blowing up, how to be successful in a small town, local business, plus much more.https://www.patreon.com/GetOnTaphttps://www.appalachianpodcast.orghttps://www.facebook.com/AppalachianPodcasthttps://twitter.com/GetOnTaphttps://www.facebook.com/harwellgricehttps://www.facebook.com/Blackwaterbuildinghttps://www.facebook.com/lawnworxoutdoorhttps://www.facebook.com/coreyhunleymusichttps://www.facebook.com/longtransportllcBustin' Chops & Callin' ShotsEach week Josh and Jon sit down to give their take on travel sports and everything in...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
No real good way to describe this abomination, so just sit back and get a laugh. We are seven friends that go way, way back, and we figured it would be fun to put us all together in a room and see what happened. What we got was a shit show of epic proportions, with old stories of arrests, mischief, stupidity, and a lot of unnecessary "momma" jokes. We're also releasing the last 30vmins on the show on our patreon page that we just launched (link below). It's for subscribers, will be inexpensive, and a good way to support what we do so we can do more of it. We'll also release some shows early over there, and throw in some bonus content. Scott Hellroth is a man who has been more influential than most people realise. In this episode, we talk about prank calling fencing celebrities like John Clements and the ideas behind commenting and staging the live feed at Swordfish.
This episode was our most entertaining yet, and for good reason. We told some great stories of Alan from days of old. We also got to hear the most legendary Nissan Altima story of all time, and introduce Heather, Simons wife, onto the show. This is one that'll have your stomach hurting. We recommend going back to Part 1 if you haven't. We dedicated this one to our friend Alan Arant, with a fitting song dedicated to him to end the show. First off, mind the language. Secondly, this episode went on for so long that we had to split it up. This first part we introduce Simon Winch, hear his story from the UK to Callaway, stories from the high seas, and why he decided to put down roots in the heart of Appalachia. We also got into some good, old, stories with Amos and John that set our paths in our youth. This was a blast, and look for part two later in the week.https://www.appalachianpodcast.orghttps://www.facebook.com/AppalachianPodcasthttps://www.facebook.com/harwellgricehttps://www.facebook.com/Blackwaterbuilding

If you listened two our previous two podcasts on the topic of "story" I think you'll agree that we educators are at an interesting spot when it comes to the way we think and talk about education and schooling moving forward. The old story that you have to be somewhere at a particular time with a particular teacher with a particular group of kids who are your same age from your same neighborhood to learn a particular curriculum at the same pace and be assessed the same way is breaking, not only because it makes little sense in a learning context, but because the world doesn't operate that way any longer. The question is, what do we as educators do to create a new story, a new way of thinking about what the experience of school looks and feels like for this latest generation of kids? Few educational leaders are better positioned to answer that question than Mary Anne Moran and John Clements, co-principals of Nipmuc High School in Upton, Mass. Over the last three years, they have led a powerful process to create a coherent story of learning for their students that is increasingly different from the one most schools are telling. John and Mary Anne are alums of our Change School program, but more impressively they were named 2017 state principal and 2016 assistant principal of the year respectively. And their high-energy, inclusive approach to generating important and powerful conversations around learning in their school community are unparalleled in my experience. As you'll hear in this conversation, while every school story and journey is unique, there are a number of important starting points that all leaders can take right away to begin the process of creating and telling a new story of learning. And hey - we know you'll learn a lot from listening to John and Mary Anne in this episode, but if you're looking for a deeper learning experience, why not enroll in the course they've designed, which is available NOW: Launching Modern Learning: First Year Strategies for Change Creating an aspirational vision for school is exciting and inspiring work; however, it can be difficult to know where to begin in the journey to reimagine school. You need support in your effort to redesign your school as well as actionable strategies that can be borrowed, adapted, and put into place. Our Launching Modern Learning course is designed to help you go from ideas to action. Learn firsthand from John and Mary Anne through the engaging modules they've designed for you. There's much to read, see, and do in this course. The course content will challenge your thinking, inspire you, and leave you with practical takeaways you can implement immediately. It's the perfect learning opportunity for school teams, too! No matter your "first" - first time in a new leadership position, first year launching a change initiative, or in your first steps of reimagining the school experience for your students, this course is for YOU. Enjoy the podcast everyone, and if you like what you hear, please give us a review on Apple Podcasts!

With the city deserted after Hurricane Katrina and buildings in varying states of damage, evacuated Tulane scientists returned to the New Orleans area to see whether any of their research could be saved from floodwaters, wind and power outages. In some cases, decades' worth of research was rescued thanks to the individuals who searched through the J. Bennett Johnston Health and Environmental Research Building downtown and manned the Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington, Louisiana throughout the storm and the difficult days and weeks after it passed. Hear the podcast with John Clements, PhD, and Andrew Lackner, DVM, PhD, below.
Jim and Rob talk to a very special guest the ARMA Director John Clements. He tells us about MARE, how he got started, and the ARMA organization.
Despite the fact there is a more than 2,400-year-old military tradition within Western civilization of close-combat proficiency, few subjects have received as unfortunate neglect by historians and academics than the martial arts of Western Europe. But a growing amount of modern research has centered on the historical methods of using various types of Medieval and Renaissance swords and weaponry in historically accurate and martially sound manners. This emerging study of historical European martial arts involves a fascinating combination of military history, fencing history, literature, art, language, and archaeology. The history of European arms and armor is itself one of established continuity marked by sudden developments of necessitated innovation. As new tools were devised, so too were new methods for using them. These methods in turn influenced still newer designs. By studying the historical systems for employing such arms and armor, we come to the best possible understanding for how and why they were designed as they were. This further leads to a greater appreciation for the little known martial arts of the age.
