In an epic handshake of history, the Qing and Russian Empires hammer out the first major treaty between East and West. It's good for Great Qing, it's maybe good for Russia... but it's definitely not good for the Mongols who got iced out of the negotiations by a couple of Puritan hustlers, like Galdan Khan and his harried host of Dzungars. When Richard Feynman proposed the idea of a quantum simulator or computer in 1981, he was frustrated by the limitations of classical systems. He logically suggested that if we live in a quantum world, we need a quantum device to simulate all the interactions of particles that make up reality. An excellent example of such a transistor-choking calculation is the quantum many-body problem. Have quantum computers finally cracked it and reached the level of Feynman's original idea? Can working on such approaches lead to better quantum computers and help solve real business use cases soon? Join Host Konstantinos Karagiannis for a chat with Benedikt Fauseweh from TU Dortmund University and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as they explore these topics and whether this work has anything to do with The Three-Body Problem novel and Netflix show.

In our final episode, we discuss Cixin Liu's story "The Wandering Earth" with Chinese author and professor Xia Jia. We talk about her first collection, currently being translated to English via Neil Clarke (of Clarkesworld). And we discuss the Golden Age of SF (in America), the current SF boom in China, and what it's like making an SF movie in China. We also make a big announcement about our new podcast If This Goes On (Don't Panic) coming out early in 2020. My guest co-host for this episode is, fittingly, Cat Rambo, author of Hearts of Tabat and many others Books reviewed: Radiance by Catherynne Valente

Grazie!
Continuing the discussion of Fermi's Paradox I turn to an examination of Liu Cixin's Three Body Trilogy and his Dark Forest explanation of Fermi's Paradox, which assumes that any aliens will shoot you on sight if they become aware of your existence. In other words most aliens are malevolent. I argue that most likely the exact opposite is the case. That it is in fact hard to imagine how you could end up with an extraterrestrial civilization that isn't extremely benevolent.
Sydney Ideas partnered with the Confucius Institute to present Liu Cixin, leading contemporary Chinese science fiction writer, and recent winner of the 2015 Hugo Award for Best Novel. In an exclusive and rare appearance outside China, Cixin talks about his visions of modern China.
Every year there are thousands of books published and any one of them could appeal to you. To help you find great new books, Locus publishes a list of forthcoming titles every three months. And to help you navigate through that, each quarter we invite Locus Editor-in-Chief Liza Groen Trombi to join us and discuss the books that we think might be most interesting that are due out between now and the end of 2015. This month, unfortunately, Liza was not able to join us. However, we have persevered and have some recommendations for you. Of course, we strongly recommend you pick up a copy of the June issue of Locus and see the full list, which goes through to March 2016. It's actually the third, with The Red: First Light coming in June, The Red: The Trials in August, and series closer The Red: Going Dark in November. All are worth your attention.
