Alessandra Jacobs (Happiest Sad Person Podcast) returns and this time, we try to make sense of the most amusing yet poorly run law firm setting on BOSTON LEGAL. Why is Alan Shore a danger to himself and others? Why does Denny Crane give Donald Trump a run for his money in terms of ruining everyone else's fun? What recent online quotes and using episode clips to illustrate recent political events have shown the show's still relevant theme? Get your gavel ready and be prepared to guffaw at the absurdity! We're joined for this dive into David E. Kelley's legalverse by Eleanor Parker of the Bygones Podcast, which examines Ally McBeal episode by episode through modern eyes, as we talk Denny Crane's penchant for guns, the other Star Trek connections that Boston Legal had over the years, the odd tone of the show, the surprisingly starry cast and how the anti-environmental message of Green Christmas has aged very badly, all while polishing off a bottle of port. William Shatner[3][4] OC (born March 22, 1931) is a Canadian actor. In a career spanning seven decades, he is best known for his portrayal of James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise, from his 1966 debut as the captain of the starship Enterprise in the second pilot of the first Star Trek television series to his final appearance as Captain Kirk in the seventh Star Trek feature film, Star Trek Generations (1994). Shatner began his screen acting career in Canadian films and television productions before moving into guest-starring roles in various US television shows. He appeared as James Kirk in all the episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, 21 of the 22 episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series, and the first seven Star Trek movies. He has written a series of books chronicling his experiences before, during and after his time in a Starfleet uniform. He has also co-written several novels set in the Star Trek universe and a series of science fiction novels, the TekWar sequence, that were adapted for television. Outside Star Trek, Shatner played the eponymous veteran police sergeant in T. J. Hooker (1982–1986) and hosted the reality-based television series Rescue 911 (1989–1996), which won a People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Dramatic Series. His appearances as a guest star in two episodes of the television detective series Columbo, almost two decades apart, were among his many such contributions to television shows from the 1970s to the 2010s. Shatner's television career after his last appearance as Captain Kirk has embraced comedy, drama and reality shows. In seasons 4 and 5 of the NBC series 3rd Rock from the Sun, he played the alien "Big Giant Head" to which the main characters reported. From 2004 until 2008, he starred as attorney Denny Crane in the final season of the legal show The Practice and in its spinoff Boston Legal, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards, one for his contribution to each series. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, he starred in both seasons of NBC's Better Late Than Never, a comical travel series in which a band of elderly celebrities toured east Asia and Europe.[5] Aside from acting, Shatner has had a career as a recording artist, beginning in 1968 with his album The Transformed Man. His cover versions of songs are dramatic recitations of their lyrics rather than musical performances: the most notable are his versions of the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man", and Elton John's "Rocket Man".[6] His most successful album was his third, Seeking Major Tom (2011), which includes covers of Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly", David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".[7] In 2021, Shatner flew into space aboard a Blue Origin sub-orbital capsule. At age 90, he became the oldest person to fly in space and one of the first 600 to do so.[8][9] Minutes after the flight, he described experiencing the overview effect. David E. Kelley's Massachusetts-set saga (and partially connected to the St. Elsewhere and Boston Public universes!) is still pretty edgy and available to stream on Hulu all these years later. David Wolf returns to once again embark on why this show is still unlike any other morality tale! What was it like for people like David who embarked on similar legal careers when this was hot? Did spin-off show Ally McBeal not date too terribly well or was it already sorta overhypd to begin with? Is Boston Legal the rare type of stand-alone comedy program that showed how one can make a rare well-done casting change while being too brilliant for its own good? And more grim yet fascinating takes on courtroom outbursts, freaky criminal clients and Denny Crane quotes! This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast: If you love records like Joshua Tree, Wrecking Ball, and Time out of Mind you know my guest's work. Daniel Lanois has an incredible resume. His work as a producer for U2, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, the Neville Brothers, Robbie Robertson and Neil Young among many others led Rolling Stone Magazine to say, “His unmistakable fingerprints are all over an entire wing of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” Lanois has moved back to Canada and launched the brand new Maker Series imprint out of his Toronto-based recording studio. First up in the Maker Series is a solo record called Heavy Sun. A soulful, joyous album recorded in Los Angeles and Toronto that fuses classic gospel and modern electronics. Still others think of him as the host of the reality-based television series Rescue 911 or the "Big Giant Head" from 3rd Rock from the Sun or as attorney Denny Crane both in the final season of the legal drama The Practice and in its spinoff series Boston Legal. He's an actor, an author a singer and now the star of Senior Moment a new rom com on VOD this week. It's not every day you get to speak with someone that has influenced hundreds of millions of people on a planet, but it happened a few days ago when I spoke with William Shatner for our latest episode of Collider Connected. During the extended interview, Shatner shared some amazing stories about his entire career ranging from his time on Broadway in the 50's, to being on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, to his recent partnership with Storyfile which will allow future generations to have conversations with him (he recorded with Storyfile for five days to make this happen). In addition, Shatner talked about his life long love affair with animals and horses, why he owes Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green an apology, how David E. Kelley cast him as "Denny Crane" after seeing him in a Priceline commercial, what it was like winning two Emmy's for the role, what it was like being Christopher Plummer's understudy on Henry V, directing T.J. Hooker, Star Trek, his fantastic album with Ben Folds, and all the various projects he's been working on during the pandemic. However, before going any further, the reason Shatner was doing interviews was to promote his new movie opening this weekend, Senior Moment. In the film, he plays a retired NASA test pilot living in Palm Springs whose life changes when he loses his license. Forced to take public transportation, he meets his polar opposite Caroline (Jean Smart) and learns to navigate love and life again. Senior Moment also stars Christopher Lloyd, Esai Morales, Katrina Bowden and Carlos Miranda.Check out what Shatner had to say in the player above and below is everything we talked about. If you're a fan of Shatner's, or just want to hear some great stories, you're going to really enjoy this conversation.William Shatner:• Has he been vaccinated yet?• What has he been during the past year while he's been trapped at home?• Talks about Storyfile and how future generations will be able to have a conversation with him. Took him 5 days to record his answers.• His album with Ben Folds has a song called “It hasn't happened yet.” I asked him if its happened.• In the song there is a line “at my age I need serenity. I need peace.” Has he gotten it yet?• For the young viewers that have never seen your work, what is the first thing or things that he'd like them to watch?• What does it mean to have influenced so many people on our planet?• When did he realize he wanted to act?• What did his parents say when he told them he wanted to act for a living?• Did his family come see him on Broadway after telling him not to act for a living?• How he was Christopher Plummer's understudy on Henry V and shares a great story about what happened the night he had to go on.• What it was like getting roles in the 50s and 60s (he did a lot of television episodes).• What was it like being on an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958.• Shares a story about the night he opened his one man show on Broadway and what happened because of food poisoning.• What was it about Senior Moment that made him want to get involved?• I jokingly ask if he did the movie because the production said they would give him the classic Porsche he drove in the movie.• What was it like working with Christopher Lloyd?• Did he have flashbacks to playing Denny Crane in the courtroom scene?• Did he improvise on the film?• Did he take home and props or costumes from the things he's worked on?• What was it like directing episodes of T.J. Lets tear up Nancy's multi-trillion dollar stimulus bill!! Until she removes all the unnecessary PORK that she's loaded it up with!!!This bill that she's promoting is so very large it would take "Denny Crane" and "Shirley Schmidt" and their entire staff to decipher and explain it!!!Simplify it Nancy, like you simplify your district!! -FFT
Denny Crane!
This week the guys dig deep on Genesis chapter 2 and God's first instruction to Adam – to "cultivate and guard the garden." (HINT: Parents, we ought to guard and cultivate our kids!) Plus – more Honduras updates, Robert is growing his bi-annual beard, and Nathan is burning down his kitchen.
With Confetti In Our Hair: Celebrating The Artistry & Music Of Tom Waits
Who’s more inventive than Tom Waits? Nobody. That’s who. Hold onto your pants folks, cuz Cheryl is back and we found another Tennessee song. Denny Crane!
Denny Crane wouldn't change one thing about himself. Alan Shore, James Spader's character, asks Denny what he'd change about himself. Denny replies, "Nothing." That's why he's one of the greatest TV characters of all time. Denny Crane epitomized self-confidence, but more importantly...he was completely comfortable, no, pleased...about who and what he is. Genius! I miss that show, Boston Legal. It's a good question though. As kids we'd throw a ball at a buddy and shout, "Think quick." So let me throw you a question with the same challenge, "Think quick!" What would you change about yourself? I doubt I've got any Denny Crane types listening to my podcast. If I do, let me hear from ya! ;) The entire self-help (ahem, personal development) industry is based on the truth that most of us (maybe ALL of us) would change something about ourselves. Sometimes we know what it might be. Other times we might be stumped. We just know this ain't it. Mostly, I suspect people are aware of what they'd like to change...they just aren't sure how. I was taught, through books when I was still a kid, that successful people don’t obsess about how. They mostly focus on who can help them, and get very focused on what they want to accomplish. I confess that was hard for me because...well, I was a teenager. I didn't have a network of people who could or would help me figure it out. Whatever IT may be. “Make the most of yourself....for that is all there is of you.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson I started reading self-help books when I was young. I don't remember the first one I read, but it was very likely, How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I'm pretty sure I started reading them because I was curious about improving myself. Truth be told, I wanted to be better. Denny Crane moments didn't often occur in my life as a kid. They still don't. ;) There are so many things I'd change about myself that I doubt an Excel spreadsheet has the computing power to database them all. And yet I'm comfortable - especially at this age - with who and what I am. I'm a walking contradiction like that, I guess. Sitting here inside The Yellow Studio listening to an album by Francis King that came out last year, Ask For The Moon, I started thinking more deeply and specifically about it. "Asking for the moon" is tantamount to asking for something that is seemingly impossible. At the very least, it's quite difficult. Are there changes you'd make in yourself that seem impossible? Or very difficult? With Francis singing to me through my headphones I started thinking how making big changes - seemingly impossible ones - are most worthwhile. I started to think back to the books and my attraction to that section of the bookstores, SELF-HELP. So I pondered it, took a stroll through my bookshelves and concluded - perhaps incorrectly, I'm not sure - that Stephen Covey's 1989 bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, may have been among the first to distill a variety of notions put forth by the self-help crowd. I'm not saying it was the first book to capture my attention or even the first content I seriously consumed and considered. Not by a long shot. “I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, 'Where’s the self-help section?' She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.” ― Steven Wright My maternal grandfather had some books on a little table by his evening chair. Guys had evening chairs back in the day. Maybe they still do. I've not had a chair (that's dad's chair) since my kids were toddlers. I've only had one and that one was it. I'm so deprived, no wonder there are so many things I would change about myself? :D “Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Do not bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” ― William Faulkner The year before I was born, in 1956, Earl Nightingale produced an audio record entitled,
With Confetti In Our Hair: Celebrating The Artistry & Music Of Tom Waits
A major early influence as noted by Tom, who placed transcriptions of Bob Dylan’s lyrics on his bedroom walls, James & Bill pay tribute to the Nobel Prize Winning Master and uncover the secret connection, that’s right folks, the first in a special series dedicated to two men with the middle name Allen. Plus condors, herons and bears, oh my, and billions and billions of passenger pigeons blotting out the sun as they fly by, this episode has it all, including a special bonus at the end. Denny Crane!
The Wizard World Comic Con visits Boise this weekend with the Golden Goose of sci-fi guests: William Shatner, aka Captain James T. Kirk (and LAPD patrol officer TJ Hooker, Boston criminal defense attorney Denny Crane and eponymous 911 phone center presenter.) "The Shat"joins Idaho Matters to talk about a career in front of the camera and meeting his fans throughout the country.
With Confetti In Our Hair: Celebrating The Artistry & Music Of Tom Waits
Bill and James go way down the rabbit hole into the obscure subject of Tom Waits' sad songs about broken hearts. It's a big dig episode, dealing with two degrees of separation, The Wee People, parking in Ireland, kissing The Blarney Stone, crows, ravens, Edgar Allen Poe, Denny Crane, psychotic poetry, and Paterson's curse. Feel the love!
With Confetti In Our Hair: Celebrating The Artistry & Music Of Tom Waits
What can we say about this episode? Denny Crane. Oh, and then there’s The Human Strum, the scribe, the little red rooster howlin’ like a wolf, Son Of Rogues Gallery, Under The Influence and Last Leaf On The Tree..that’s right, folks: loads of family fun. AND in the center chamber....THE HUMAN GUINEA PIG quivering in the corner after weeks of being confetti-boarded with Heart Attack and Vine. PLUS, Bill is rendered speechless in the Season 1 Finale...AND Retractions & Corrections. Long live Jerry West!
Since 2008, Big Think has been sharing big ideas from creative and curious minds. The Think Again podcast takes us out of our comfort zone, surprising our guests and Jason Gots, your host, with unexpected conversation starters from Big Think’s interview archives. William Shatner created the role of Captain James T Kirk on the original Star Trek, and won two Emmys and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Denny Crane on “The Practice” and “Boston Legal”. He’s also written nearly 30 bestselling books of fiction and non-fiction and released two albums of music with the artist Ben Folds. His new book Zero-G, coauthored with Jeff Rovin, is a science fiction terrorism thriller set in the year 2050. It begins with an unnaturally powerful Tsunami that destroys most of the coast of Japan, and follows FBI Field Agent Samuel Lord as he attempts to unravel the mystery. In this extra feisty episode, Shatner and host Jason Gots talk ego, the extinction of the human race, bullying, and whether or not it's a dog-eat-dog world out there. Surprise conversation starter interview clips in this episode:Ryan Holiday on ego, Nikhil Goyal on Bullying Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Witches of Mass Destruction: Boston Legal TV Show Radio Podcast Commentary: A story of stop-loss, dissent v. disloyalty, Wiccans, Christians, being harmonic and flamingos somewhat pretty in pink. Shirley Schmidt and Denise Bauer represent two groups of parents, one Christian and the other Wiccan -- a pagan religion -- who are suing to get rid of a school's Halloween pageant for its wicked witch. The Christians feel their faith is being marginalized by a satanic symbol, and the Wiccans claim that Halloween images stereotype them - especially after the school's principal gives a riveting demonstration of her cackling, green witch. Meanwhile, Garrett Wells takes Cassie (Tamara Feldman), the paralegal with whom he's involved, to see Alan Shore and ask him to represent her in suing the U.S. government, to vindicate the death of her brother, killed in the Iraq war. Shore takes on the unconventional case, but his friendship with Denny Crane is threatened since Crane strongly feels that one shouldn't criticize the military while the country is at war. The strained friendship threatens the annual office Halloween party, where they both were to dress up as giant flamingoes .
