The “stoned ape hypothesis,” popularized by ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, suggests that the accidental consumption of psychedelic mushrooms by early hominids may have catalyzed rapid cognitive development, leading to significant advancements in language, abstract thinking, and social structures. While this speculative theory remains outside mainstream scientific consensus, it continues to spark curiosity and debate by linking consciousness expansion to dietary shifts in our evolutionary past.

New types of snake-bite anti-venoms are designed by AI. Also, how much meat did human ancestors eat? How the Baltic Nord Stream gas pipeline rupture of 2022 was the biggest single release of methane ever caused by humans, and that Pluto met Charon, not with a bang, but more of a kiss.Using a high precision technique for spotting different isotopes of Nitrogen, Tina Lüdecke of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry has concluded that a group of early hominin Australopithecus living in South Africa were predominantly vegetarian, putting the date that human ancestors started eating meat (and thence growing bigger brains) to more recently. The technique, she thinks, can enlighten prehistoric food webs and ecologies from millions of years ago.Last year's Nobel prizes showed the potential new techniques of AI to design synthetic proteins. Timothy P Jenkins and colleagues decided to try designing treatments for snakebite venoms, with remarkable apparent success. It could save many thousands of lives a year.Since the September 2022 explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic sea, many different analyses of how much methane was released have provided a variety of estimates. This week, scientists at the UNEP International Methane emissions observatory – including Stephen Harris - published a study estimating it to be a little under half a million tonnes, making it by far the single biggest human caused release of this most dangerous greenhouse gas. Yet, they say, even that is a tiny fraction of what is released overall around the world every year. And Finally, a new analysis of the original formation of the Pluto-Charon binary Dwarf Planetary system suggests they – and possibly many other Kuiper belt pairing – were born of a gentle astronomical dance and a peck on the cheek, rather than the catastrophic collision we associate with the earth-moon's fiery first date. And it may have lasted just a matter of days, according to author Adeene Denton of the University of Arizona.Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Alex Mansfield Production Coordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth(Photo: Gorilla feeding. My career as a writer has taken me all around the world; I've met amazing readers everywhere I go, and I've seen some extraordinary places. Back in 2012 the world heard that Bigfoot DNA had been isolated and genetically tested under controlled laboratory conditions. Those involved claimed that the testing had proven the existence of Bigfoot (aka, Sasquatch), and that the creature was a hybrid between modern homo sapiens and an unknown primate species. In a short time, the story unraveled and the research was scrutinized by experts revealing a number of flaws. But this was not the only attempt at producing genetic evidence for Bigfoot. There were earlier and subsequent tests. Is there genuine evidence for Bigfoot DNA?

The story of humans began a long time ago. Three and a half billion years ago protein molecules floated around the ooze called the primordial soup. Then something happened and a molecule made a copy of itself. And then another copy and another. Soon these molecules arranged themselves into something called a cell. Then cells clumped together and multiplied. Organisms were created. Over the next three billion years, the organisms became more complicated and more diverse. 375 million years ago one of those organisms crawled out of the sea. 4 million years ago hominids emerged. Hominids had large brains and advanced cognitive abilities. They could reason, communicate and cooperate. 200,000 years ago, homo sapiens, modern humans appeared. They developed agriculture, organized into civilizations and became masters of the planet. The story of humans began a long time ago. But all stories end. And according to many leaders in business, science and technology: we're in the final chapter. The part of our story where we finally go extinct. And there's nothing we can do to stop it. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thewhyfiles/support

I've been walking in Elnup Wood since 2015 and I started to see weird structures that I have not seen anything like before. I work at night, so really early in the morning I would walk my dogs in the woods. I started to find these structures made from tree branches, some of the branches were quite thick in diameter, they were always broken and had no tool marks and no footprints in the soft mud around them. I saw no evidence of a camp fire or human debris. In fact I did not see anything that looked human made at all. Some of these structures would vanish or appear almost overnight. I also heard a strange call on nine occasions I was out there. Somehow I was shouted at by a disembodied voice and it said the word “YODE”. A simple internet search revealed this word is from an ancient language meaning “go” or “went”. The voice was really deep and gravelly.Check Out Our BBR Podcasts and Social NetworksHelp To Support BBR

On today's ID the Future, Casey Luskin rebuts the oft-repeated claim that the human and chimp genomes are 98-99% similar and therefore surely resulted from Darwinian common descent. Luskin cites an article in the journal Science which describes the 98-99% claim as a myth. The original figure was derived from a single protein-to-protein comparison, but once you compare the entire genomes, and use more rigorous methods, the similarity drops several percentage points, and on one account, down into the mid-80s. Additionally, the chimp genomes used in the original comparison studies borrowed the human genome for scaffolding, thus artificially boosting the degree of similarity. What about supposed junk DNA similarities between human and chimp? Why would an intelligent designer put the Read More › Source

When talking about our ancient anscestors the question often comes up over how we refer to them.  Are they hominins or hominids?  It's a good question and it depends on how it is being used and what "hominid" branch is being discussed.   Over the next few episodes we'll be looking at some of those ancestors, so it's a good idea to address this terminology and what will be used going forward to avoid confusion.  It might also answer some questions!   Evolution Talk is also a book! What do alcohol, religion and pandemics have in common?  A lot, as it turns out. This episode is a deep dive to the origins of our human love of alcohol, religion and social connection. In short, whenever a drug (like gambling, opium, sex, religion, social media, lies, alcohol, etc.) becomes more potent and less social, humans get ourselves into trouble. The pandemic has accelerated our already-problematic relationship with both religion and alcohol, and the similarities are pretty obvious once you know where to look. For more on ancient cities built to produce and drink alcohol (including Göbekli Tepe), check out The Guardian article, "10,000 Years of Cheers: Why Social Drinking is an Ancient Ritual" or Edward Slingerland's book, Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced and Stumbled our Way to Civilization. Human beings are distinctly weird. We live for a very long time after we stop reproducing, move completely differently than all of our closest relatives, lack the power of chimpanzees and other primates but completely outdo most other terrestrial mammals in a contest of endurance. If we think about bodies as hypotheses about the stable features of their ancestral environments, what do the features of our unusual physiology say about what humans ARE, where we come from, the details of our origin story as a profoundly successful species? And what can we learn by telescoping that story forward to explain some of the most persistent puzzles and paradoxes about our health, the way we age, our need for physical exercise, and our nearly ubiquitous aversion to habits that are good for us?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week, we sprint into the paleoanthropology, biomechanics, and physiology of exercise with Harvard evolutionary biologist Daniel Lieberman, author of several books including Exercised, The Story of the Human Body, and The Evolution of the Human Head. In our rapid-fire discussion we explore how millions of years as hunter-gatherers equipped hominids with a unique package of adaptations for endurance running, why exercise is so good for us but so generally undesirable, and how physical activity in old age helped shape us into the strongly intergenerational social apes we are today.Be sure to check out our extensive show notes with links to all our references at complexity.simplecast.com. This and all episodes at: https://aiandyou.net/ .   What is consciousness, how might it emerge from or into AI, and how can it be transferred? Fascinating questions tackled by the oeuvre of a fascinating author, Robert J. Sawyer, the "Dean of Canadian Science Fiction," and one of only eight writers ever to win all three of the science-fiction field's top honors for best novel of the year: the Hugo Award, which he won for his novel Hominids; the Nebula Award, which he won for his novel The Terminal Experiment, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, which he won with his novel Mindscan. In the second half of our interview, we talk about the simulation hypothesis, consciousness capture and transfer, and what today's AI technologists should be learning from science fiction.  All this plus our usual look at today's AI headlines. This and all episodes at: https://aiandyou.net/ .   What if there are zombies among us? In another dive into the nature of consciousness, the "philosophical zombie" is a fascinating topic explored by a fascinating author, Robert J. We talk about zombies because of the question of how to know whether an AI is conscious, and yes, we discuss Blake Lemoine's assertion that Google's LaMDA AI has become sentient. Rob's stories explore how humans and superintelligent AI can both win. Find out more in part 1. All this plus our usual look at today's AI headlines. In this episode, the boys tackle human evolution. Why did we stop being monkeys? Were cavemen humans or something else? And are we still evolving today? Stream away to hear Brandon explain it all (despite being quite a bit higher than usual). Of all the myths and stories we find shared ubiquitously around the globe one of the most persistent and captivating is that of hairy, wild, human-like creatures living in the wilderness. How are they represented in different cultures? Are they merely myth or is there a physical reality to them? And if so, why the disparaging gap between the bountiful anecdotal evidence and meagre physical? In this talk we discuss the elusive creatures and the surrounding phenomena from a historical, Jungian, mythological, paleo-anthropological, and even modern forensic perspective  as to what may lie behind this cross cultural folklore and unrelenting sightings.SHOW NOTESThe Mythopoetics of Extra-sapiens Hominids: Youtube VideoBYRON JOEL'S WORK IN REGENERATIVE AGRICULTUREwww.oaktreedesigns.com.auBYRON'S MUSIC ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
