Finding God in Our Pain
Christian Women in Violent Situations, with Reverend Cheryl Kincaid

Finding God in Our Pain

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2025 62:58

SUMMARY: The conversation features Reverend Cheryl discussing her experiences with childhood trauma, including living in a chaotic environment with an abusive father and a depressed mother. *She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing abuse, understanding forgiveness, and setting boundaries. *The dialogue explores the complexities of healing, the role of faith, and the necessity of confronting abusive behavior while also finding strength in God. *Reverend Cheryl shares insights on how to support women in violent situations, the significance of therapy, and the importance of community support. *Ultimately, she highlights that healing is a lifelong journey involving layers of understanding and growth, and encourages women to assert their identity in Christ to reclaim their voices and establish healthy boundaries. PODCAST INTRO: The ministry of my guest, Reverend Cheryl Kincaid, focuses on giving voice to Christian women caught in violent situations and relationships, aiming to help them find wholeness and healing through God's instruction. Using her personal story of abuse combining that with her education in Marriage and Family Therapy along with her Master of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary, Rev Cheryl talked about understanding abuse, boundaries, identity, righteous anger, and forgiveness as taught in the bible. The discussion on forgiveness alone was worth the conversation because so much about God's love and forgiveness has been hijacked with a toxic empathy that is used against tender hearted, conscious Christians especially the abused. We talked about the difference between forgiveness and denial. Reverend Cheryl states that forgiveness requires acknowledging the hurt caused by others and making a conscious decision to forgive, while denial involves minimizing the impact of the abuse or rationalizing it. One of the tools that Rev Cheryl shares is for the moments when you're having a flashback, you've been triggered or trying to resolve inner, emotional mental conflict in yourself. She shares this exercise, the therapeutic term known as classical conditioning and it involves using your dominate hand to represent yourself as the adult you are and your non-dominate hand as the child you were. Using your dominant hand you write down something like, I know you're in pain right now and Using your name, you ask yourself by writing down, what is going on? Then Using your non-dominant hand write down your emotions. There is a point to using your non-dominant hand because it looks like a child's handwriting. Then Looking at the emotions that surfaced you use your adult hand (that knows the truth about where you are now) to comfort your child hand (that is bringing forth the emotions that are connected to the pain). Reframe the emotions with truth whether it be with God's word/His promises, with facts such as Rev Cheryl said things like, You couldn't take care of yourself then but you can take care of yourself now and then you'd list truths. If it was about money, it could be, I have a job, I have a bank account, I'm working toward financial independence. If it was about not having control then say, I have control over myself, I'm responsible for myself, I am learning to set boundaries, I have boundaries in place etc Things that speak truth over where you are today. To me, I thought it was effective using your hands because it gets you outside your head. I think that would be beneficial because sometimes you have so much emotion and overwhelm in your head that if you can make it external, it seems to help you isolate and sort through your emotions in that moment. It reminds me of the effectiveness of journaling as a way to purge your thoughts on paper, it gets everything you can list out of your mind and you can sort through it that way too. So in short, us the classical condition exercise to take what you're believing based on your past and updating it with the truth of where you are today and where you're headed, toward wholeness and healing. And even if your current answers for today (as the adult) are not in your favor with regard to healing and wholeness it gives you a starting point, it helps you pinpoint the fact you need to take action. One of the things we didn't get a chance to talk about is that Rev Cheryl is an author of several books. Her stories are inspired from witnessing God's redemptive grace in the messy reality of authentic life for Christian's, including her own. In her stories she's not afraid to address violent issues that many women find themselves in. Using realistic life situations she reveals the heart of God, His love, care, concern, ability to heal and restore despite the brokenness of this life. Be prepared to stop this audio along the way so that you can digest what she is sharing; which is practical advice and things you can immediately implement to move from being a victim to becoming victorious! Send us a textLeadership is not for the faint of heart. I've felt it in my own life—moments of weariness, failure, and discouragement. And I know so many of you have, too. That's why I'm so excited to share this week's episode with you. I sat down with Dave Harvey, author of The Clay Pot Conspiracy: God's Plan to Use Weakness in Leaders, to talk about how God uses our weakness—not our strength—to shape us for lasting impact. In this conversation, Dave and I unpack the Seven Wonders of Resilience, walking through how God brings life out of loss, how repentance fuels strength, and how even wounds and criticism can be used to enlarge our souls. His words are raw, gospel-rich, and full of encouragement for leaders in every season. ✨ If you feel weary in ministry, leadership, or even in your personal walk, I pray this episode lifts your heart and points you back to the God who shines brightest through our cracks.Connect with Rev. There is great symbolism in the Old Testament. In Leviticus 14.3-7 we see a cleansing ceremony to a person healed of leprosy (or a defiling skin disease). In that ceremony, there are two birds, a clay pot with fresh water as well as cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop. One can quickly read over these elements and their potential symbolism, pointing to the gospel narrative. Dave breaks down each of these elements and their potential symbolism.Outline:03:37 - The Sacrificial Bird - symbolizing Jesus crucified04:12 - The Fresh Water - symbolizing living water, fulfilled in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The Vault of American Memory: Glenn Beck and the Battle to Preserve the Truth In this special, on-the-road episode, Sage Steele takes a unique and memorable trip to Irving, TX, and steps inside the high-security vault of Glenn Beck — media mogul, bestselling author, and a controversial voice in modern conservatism — for an unforgettable tour of America's forgotten history. Not your typical "sit-down" interview, Sage and Glenn engage with the collection, from founding documents to Hollywood memorabilia, Beck reveals a personal crusade to preserve not just the glory, but the grit of the American story. Through Beck's private collection, the third-largest archive of founding documents, this conversation becomes a deep meditation on truth, memory, and control. Beck opens up about a spiritual “clay pots” experience that prompted the creation of his collection and shares how the American Journey Experience is using tech and education to ensure future generations learn the full story of America. A major theme in 2 Corinthians is God's strength revealed in our weakness. The passage before us powerfully makes this point and, in so doing, provides the Christian with wonderful encouragement as we engage in gospel ministry. The passage divides into at least four main points: 1. Powerless Pots (v. 7) 2. Powerful Paradoxes (vv. 8–9) 3. Powerful Perspective (vv. 10–11) 4. Powerful Partnership (v. 12)

We are covering a variety of topics today with my guest Cheryl Kincaid: surviving child abuse, spiritual abuse, forgiveness, denial, women's empowerment, being called to preach, and the lesser known golden nuggets of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Biography Reverend Cheryl Kincaid is a Presbyterian Minister who studied Marriage and Family Therapy at Bethel Seminary and has a Master of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Bible Reading: Isaiah 64:8; 1 Corinthians 4:6-7; 1 Peter 4:10-11"I don't understand why Miss Wong picked Melanie to sing the solo at church instead of me," said Freya as she flattened a stick of red modeling clay onto the table. "I'm the best singer in the choir, and I have a much better stage presence than Melanie." She tossed her hair over her shoulder. "Miss Wong says I have a natural talent for music.""And a natural talent for bragging!" muttered Brody. Freya made a face at her brother as she started shaping the clay into a slender vase. "Don't be jealous just because I'm smarter than you." Brody sighed impatiently and left the room. Freya stood back to admire her handiwork. "I wish I could fire this vase in a kiln so it would hold water, but it will look pretty just sitting on a shelf." She smiled at her mom. "Mrs. White says I'm quite the artist."Mom glanced at Freya's work. "Well, that blue bowl you made yesterday looks fantastic! And this red clay vase is turning out so well too. Both of those pottery pieces must be very smart and talented to be so nicely made.""What do you mean?" asked Freya, frowning. "Things aren't smart or talented. I am--I made them. They were just sticks of clay. I'm the one responsible for the way they turned out.""That's true," said Mom. "That's like people, isn't it? For example, you may be smart and artistic and a good singer, but who is responsible for that? Who made you that way?"Freya looked down at the table. "God did," she mumbled at last."So who should receive the credit and praise?" asked Mom."God," Freya admitted.Mom nodded. "God is the one who gave you your talents and abilities--and He gives them to everyone else too. They're not all the same, but they're all equally important, because they're meant to be used to bring glory to Jesus and share His love with others. We can trust Him to help us do that." Mom pointed to Freya's vase. "Just like you're carefully shaping that lump of clay into a beautiful vase, God is shaping us to be more like Jesus. So don't brag about the things you're able to do. Instead, remember they're gifts from Him and use them to serve others."-Tanya FerdinanduszHow About You?Are you talented at certain things? Do you let others know that God is responsible for the things you do well? All your abilities and gifts were given to you by God. He gives everyone different but equally important gifts so we can use them to serve one another in love. So don't brag about the things you can do. Instead, use your gifts to show others how God is shaping you to be more like Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Who do you think you are? Everything you have was given to you…why do you act as if you got it all by your own power? (ERV) (1 Corinthians 4:7)Today's Key Thought:Don't brag

We all know that ministry is hard. Listen to how the apostle Paul describes it:“We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you (2 Corinthians 4:7–12)." Paul discovered a secret:The “Clay-Pot Conspiracy.” Author and ministry leader Dave Harvey dropped by with some encouragement for all of us... but especially those in ministry. https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-clay-pot-conspiracySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We mounted some clay pots on our back patio to plant herbs in for the spring. There is just one problem, the birds got to them first. So instead of growing herbs, we will now be playing host to the hatching of baby birds in nests they have made in two of our pots. Well...as I watched these birds, it reminded me of Jesus' reassuring words in the sermon on the mount. Here I watched these little creatures day in and day out find food and shelter, which God constantly provides. We are of so much more value - so won't God also care for us? So long as we seek his kingdom first, the answer to that question is yes. Not yes to all our comforts, but yes to what we truly need. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast

Do It Yourself Gardening | Container Gardening with Japanese Maples | How to Grow Japanese Maples in Containers Matt and Tim discuss How to Grow Japanese Maples in Containers in this DIY Gardening Podcast. Learn how to plant your own container garden with Japanese maples. From selecting the right pot - to picking the best Japanese maple varieties for container growing, Matt and Tim discuss it all including Tips for Growing Japanese Maples in Containers. Japanese maples have a non-invasive root system that makes them ideal for container growing and bonsai culture. This will allow you to bring the ornamental appeal of Japanese maple to your deck, patio, poolside and driveway expanding your garden. The concept of how big a Japanese maple will get in a container is similar to that of how big a goldfish will get inside a bowl. A Japanese maple will grow the size container it is put in. A small container will dwarf the size of the tree from the size the tree would naturally be in the landscape. Dwarf Japanese maples are often used in containers because they get fairly close to full-size in most containers. The best tip for container growing is a well-drained pot. 10@10! https://mrmaple.com/collections/mrmaple-10-new-trees-10am-on-tuesday New 10@10 videos premier every Tuesday at 9 am!  At MrMaple.com we are passionate about Japanese maples!
