As human beings we think of ourselves as strong and impressive. However, the Scriptures remind us that we are like clay pots that are fractured, chipped, and near breaking. The gospel of Christ shines every greater when it is seen contained in earthen vessels.

Often Christians look at themselves, their abilities and opportunities andthink little of it. They compare themselves to others and their effect seems to matter little. Butthis is simply not true. In this message we see how God saved, calls and equips all of us for Hispurposes. The size or effect is unimportant.

A major theme in 2 Corinthians is God's strength revealed in our weakness. "I'm the best singer in the choir, and I have a much better stage presence than Melanie." She tossed her hair over her shoulder. "Miss Wong says I have a natural talent for music.""And a natural talent for bragging!" muttered Brody. Freya made a face at her brother as she started shaping the clay into a slender vase. "Don't be jealous just because I'm smarter than you." Brody sighed impatiently and left the room. Freya stood back to admire her handiwork. "I wish I could fire this vase in a kiln so it would hold water, but it will look pretty just sitting on a shelf." She smiled at her mom. "Mrs. White says I'm quite the artist."Mom glanced at Freya's work. "Well, that blue bowl you made yesterday looks fantastic! And this red clay vase is turning out so well too. Both of those pottery pieces must be very smart and talented to be so nicely made.""What do you mean?" asked Freya, frowning. "Things aren't smart or talented. I am--I made them. They were just sticks of clay. I'm the one responsible for the way they turned out.""That's true," said Mom. "That's like people, isn't it? For example, you may be smart and artistic and a good singer, but who is responsible for that? Who made you that way?"Freya looked down at the table. "God did," she mumbled at last."So who should receive the credit and praise?" asked Mom."God," Freya admitted.Mom nodded. "God is the one who gave you your talents and abilities--and He gives them to everyone else too. They're not all the same, but they're all equally important, because they're meant to be used to bring glory to Jesus and share His love with others. We can trust Him to help us do that." Mom pointed to Freya's vase. "Just like you're carefully shaping that lump of clay into a beautiful vase, God is shaping us to be more like Jesus. So don't brag about the things you're able to do. We mounted some clay pots on our back patio to plant herbs in for the spring. There is just one problem, the birds got to them first. So instead of growing herbs, we will now be playing host to the hatching of baby birds in nests they have made in two of our pots. Well...as I watched these birds, it reminded me of Jesus' reassuring words in the sermon on the mount. Here I watched these little creatures day in and day out find food and shelter, which God constantly provides. We are of so much more value - so won't God also care for us? So long as we seek his kingdom first, the answer to that question is yes. Not yes to all our comforts, but yes to what we truly need. #SetYourMindAbovePodcast

The Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday episodes of Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others. Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime. We enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems during circle time. As the month progresses, we learn new song and poem verses. This week, we learn the final verses to our songs and poems for this month's circle time. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays. After circle time, we hear a story together. We listen to nature stories and folk tales during the third and fourth weeks of the month. Today, we hear the story of The Clay Pot.
