The Book Leads – Episode 29: Nike Anani & Lifetime to Legacy: A New Vision for Multigenerational Family Businesses For this episode, Nike Anani guides me through the nature of her work as a Succession Specialist who guides families in preparing family businesses to live on beyond this generation, the next and those that follow. Her career journey began after returning to her homeland of Nigeria, after having lived and studied abroad, to move the family business forward. What I took away from this great conversation is how we can all consider that successional mindset, to declare and work for what will be here beyond our work today and that of the generation that follows us. There's being reactive to the world around us, and then there's being proactive about what steps we're going to take, how we're going to work together, and how our name and mission will live – and thrive – beyond our lifetimes. Some highlights we touch upon in this episode: How society can tend to be about façade and veneers, but trauma can bring something beautiful, and that the failures and hardships allow us to learn so much – even in the family business. How perspective can be everything, allowing us to realize what we have when we step away and come back with fresh and opened eyes. The writing process and what worked for Nike The MAIN QUESTION for you, which underlies my conversation with Nike is, How do you go about setting up your legacy, whether individually, as a business, or as a family? In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Nike Anani. At 9 years old she went to the UK with her mom and brothers for what she was told was a summer vacation, but they never left. Nike's dad stayed behind in Lagos, Nigeria to run the family business, and it wasn't until she was in her 20s that she learned how extremely successful the family business was. Nike's parents' intentions of not sharing the scope of the business were good. They wanted their children to be focused, hardworking and self-motivated. Episode 68 | David Kinnaman from Barna and Mark Sayers of Red Church to explore what some of the latest data and church trends might mean for the future of the church and pastoring. Barna in 2019 and 2021 did a significant research project called the Connected Generation where they interviewed 18-35 year olds on areas of church engagement, mental health, and global concerns. In this episode, they specifically explore the Canadian data and what it might reveal about the shifting trends in young christians and non christians. Something Mark emphasizes is that although many of the trends can seem discouraging, we have seen them coming; the pandemic just acted as a portal to jump us ahead faster. For example, many of the people who have left the church during the pandemic were already considering it anyways. So where does that leave us? Well, both David and Mark have hope. What remains is a faithful remnant who have chosen to stay and who are hungrier than ever for the things of God. About | David Kinnaman is the author of the bestselling books Faith For Exiles, Good Faith, You Lost Me and unChristian. He is president of Barna Group, a leading research and communications company that works with churches, nonprofits, and businesses ranging from film studios to financial services. Since 1995, David has directed interviews with more than two million individuals and overseen thousands of U.S. and global research studies. He lives in California with his three children. Mark Sayers is the senior leader of Red Church in Melbourne, Australia. He is passionate about spiritual renewal and the future of the church. Mark is the author of a number of books including Strange Days and Reappearing Church. Mark lives in Melbourne with his wife, Trudi, his daughter, Grace, and twin boys, Hudson and Billy. The way I've discovered success later in life is like the old Bob Dylan quote, “If a man wakes up in the morning and goes to bed at night, and in between does what he likes, then he is a success”. I think, that is the best definition because it's really a story you can write yourself. We always think that when I get to this stage in my business I'll sell it, I'll be happy, but you won't. That won't make you happy in all this sort of state of yours, hold your happiness hostage to something in the future, I'll just do this deal, or do another year, or sell this business, and then I'll be happy. It doesn't happen. 1:52 I thought that you had to be able to buy and sell a business and make hundreds of millions or billions to be worthy5:50 Success is one example, but a lot of our identity and our relationships are embedded around us.8:41 We always think that when I get to this stage in my business I'll sell it, I'll be happy, but you won't.15:41 A mentor said to me take as much cash as you can out the business, and stick it into real estate, stick it into assets19:04 As an entrepreneur you're always thinking or scheming or is plotting or is trying to do something betterhttp://www.grahamdbrown.com About Graham Brown - 15 years helping corporates, startup founders and storytellers find their voice- Public speaker, published author, investor- Founder CEO Pikkal & Co - we create award winning podcasts for brands- Podcast Guesting Pro - get booked on 24 podcasts in the next 6 months- Founder The Podcast Accelerator - global mastermind of podcast hosts & producers- Podcast show host @ Podcast Maps- Author Podcasting for Brands- Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Psychology (Sussex University)- Entrepreneurship (Harvard Business School HBX)- Ironman triathleteGraham is the founder of Pikkal & Co - Award Winning Podcast Agency – an AI Powered, Data Driven B2B Podcast Agency in Singapore and The Podcast Accelerator - a Mastermind of thought leadership podcast hosts. He is a published author on the subject of The Digital Transformation of Communication, works including "The Human Communication Playbook", “The Mobile Youth: Voices of the Connected Generation” – documenting the rise of mobile culture in the early 2000s in Japan, China, Africa and India and “Brand Love – How to Build a Brand Worth Talking About”.He also hosts Podcast Maps, The Be More Human Podcast, The XL Podcast, XL: 10 Minute Leaders Live and Asia Tech Podcast. Even if your business isn’t a family business, you need to hear from Nike Anani. Nike is a consultant, family business therapist at times, and one of the top 100 Family Business Consultants in the world. A few of the things we loved: How are you being in your business is a much more important question than what are you doing in your business. You don’t emerge as a leader, you practice it. You don’t emerge as a visionary, you practice it. We laughed, we had “wow!” moments, and we got off track in all the best ways. We can’t think of a better way to finish up our third season than with this conversation. Nike shares why she moved back to Nigeria after spending most of her life in London, how working with her dad in the family business changed her in ways she never expected, and what we can all learn from family businesses and how they exist in the world (hint: in Nike’s experience, they’re very rarely focused on profit-over-all.) Key concepts: Clarity Communication Collaboration: Nike’s 3 Cs for success in family businesses (ahem, or any business or team!) Past Present Future: the Past led us to where we are today & it’s important to understand history, we need to work in the Present to guide the future, and we need a vision of the Future to understand what we’re working toward.
