Banish - It's Not How You Look, It's How You Feel

This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   Banish is on a mission to make every person feel confident - with or without acne, says Daisy Jing, Founder and CEO of the skincare brand.   "When I had my experience with acne, I felt like I needed to hide," Daisy says. "I couldn't leave my house. I had to wear ten layers of makeup. But our mission is to make everyone feel confident about who they are, regardless of their skin condition."   Daisy's journey began in college when she started recording YouTube videos reviewing various skincare products. She found that she had developed a loyal following and then began formulating products on her own. Banish essentially started when she started shipping those products out to followers.   "There wasn't like a huge business plan ... I had intentions of going to med school, all of that. I just wanted to help people with their problems. I solved mine. I wanted to help others," Daisy says. "And that's how Banish was born."   Her advice to others is just starting a brand: Take it one step at a time, and don't be distracted by things that don't help your business. Focus on the basics of business.   In Part 1, Daisy talks about:   * Gratitude toward one of her earliest hires. * Her experience of having acne since the third grade. * Why it's not the way you look that matters; it's how you feel that's important. * Her company's philosophy about social media. * How her YouTube reviews of skincare products sparked the idea for the brand. * The discouragement she got from those around her when first dreaming up the brand.   Join Ramon Vela and Daisy Jing as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Banish, visit: https://banish.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Yotpo.   Speaking to her customers is a passion and critical element of the brand, says Daisy Jing, founder and CEO of Banish, the skincare brand that focuses on acne treatment.   "I'm constantly talking (to customers). We call them our soldiers. I'm constantly talking to them because, you know, in skincare, there are a million different products, right? There are a million different needs," Daisy says. "I want to make sure that we're close to our customers and giving them what they actually need."   Another essential facet of Banish's business plan is the number of products produced. They have launched seven products in nine years of business because each new product takes years to develop.   "Of course, it would help revenue if we had more products to sell," Daisy says. "But if you have acne, you can't use ten different products. You have to stick with the basics."   As a small business, throwing millions of dollars on a marketing plan isn't in the cards, Daisy says, so she focuses on creating the best products with the best ingredients. Let the results speak for themselves.   In Part 2, Daisy talks about:   * Her need to stay in constant touch with the brand's customers. * The nuances of skincare products that consumers don't know. * The story behind the formulation of Banish's sunscreen product. * How sticking to fewer products helps the brand and its customers. * Why people don't focus on the right metrics when shopping for skincare. * How and why the brand's community focuses on people's stories. * Where to start on the Banish website.   Join Ramon Vela and Daisy Jing as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Banish, visit: https://banish.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. Daisy Jing is the Founder and CEO of Banish, a natural skincare line targeted in treating acne scars. Daisy suffered acne all of her life, and traditionally prescribed treatments didn't work for her. She studied pre-med and dermatology at Duke University and while there, she started her YouTube channel reviewing skincare products. Through her vulnerability and story of her skincare journey, the YouTube channel garnered over 70 million views. She started formulating her own products to help her skin, and before long, her audience wanted to buy whatever it was she was using. And so Banish was born. Today, Banish is a multimillion-dollar business and its products are sold all over the world. Daisy is a TEDx speaker, Inc. 500 entrepreneur, Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneur, and most importantly, mom to a daughter and a Labradoodle. In her free time, Daisy loves fitness and teaches lagree pilates. In this episode… Despite all the pressure women face as entrepreneurs, business leaders, and mothers, it's very important for them to be authentic and show up as their best selves. This may not be easy, but from experience, Daisy Jing knows just how valuable it is. While struggling to find a solution for her acne, Daisy created a YouTube channel where she shared her journey and struggles. She did this honestly and authentically and ended up amassing a big audience that was going through the same problems. When she started creating her own products to treat her acne, this audience asked for the products, eventually leading to the launch of Daisy's skincare brand. In this episode of the Lead Like A Woman Show, Andrea Heuston interviews Daisy Jing, the Founder and CEO of Banish, about how she built her natural skincare business authentically. They also discuss Daisy's TEDx talk, share tips for dealing with imposter syndrome, and talk about the value of being your true self when building a brand. Stay tuned.

Wellness Experts Daisy Jing and Catharine Arnston both believe that when it comes to skincare and nutrition, less is definitely more. Our first guest is Daisy Jing, the founder and skincare expert behind the beauty brandBanish. After struggling with acne and scarring for most of her life, Daisy realized that while there were so many skincare products being sold in the market, most of them were not only ineffective but were also too harsh and did more harm than good. Determined to find a better way to achieve clear and healthy skin, Daisy began to extensively research the ingredients that went into skincare products, and eventually went on to formulate her own. After seeing how her skin dramatically improved by cutting out many of the unnecessary ingredients, she started to share her products with her online network, which ultimately led to the creation of Banish. Today, Daisy has helped thousands of women achieve vibrant, glowing skin, all while helping women overcome the psychological and mental health impact of acne, leading them to become more confident in the skin they're in. Check out their products at Banish.com, and use the promo code Food Heals for $10 off on your order. Our second guest (and returning champ!) is Catharine Arnston, the founder of ENERGYbits®. After her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and healed herself with nutrition and switching to an alkaline diet, Catharine was inspired to help others learn the incredible health benefits of plant-based nutrition. Upon realizing the many objections and obstacles people have when it comes to eating more greens, she set out to find a solution that's fast, easy, and safe. Algae ticked all of the boxes – and yet, Catherine found that even though it has existed for centuries and is a billion-dollar agricultural crop in other countries, a lot of people have not even heard of it. She's now on a mission to teach people about the wonders of algae, specifically spiraling and chlorella, and how easy and fun it really is to be healthy. Daisy Jing is the CEO and founder of Banish, a multimillion-dollar skincare company that only sells on its website, banish.com. Daisy started Banish by accident; she had struggled with acne all her life and decided to create a YouTube channel documenting her struggle. That YouTube channel has over 700 videos and 70M views today. From there, she realized many current skincare ingredients such as fragrances or fillers break her out and so she created her own products out of her kitchen. All the products are natural, vegan, cruelty-free, do not contain any of the ingredients that cause acne for her (namely silicones, mineral oil, petroleum, artificial preservatives colors and fragrances). The rest is history. Daisy was awarded Forbes '30 under 30' in manufacturing, as well as an Inc.500 entrepreneur and awarded in LA's "Fastest-growing female-owned companies in Los Angeles". She also serves on the board Of Entrepreneur Organization-Los Angeles, is a member of Young Entrepreneur Council, and has sponsored and mentored many young female entrepreneurs through her alumni, the Duke Alumni Association. Most recently, she is a TEDx speaker and speaks regularly about the struggles we battle with perfection and how to overcome our own inner critic. In our girl to girl talk, Daisy and I discussed what it was like to grow up feeling unattractive and having acne at a very tender age in a girl’s growing up years and what that was like. She candidly shares how she started with her first YouTube video in 2009 with absolutely no idea she would attract such a following. Her purpose was to help others with similar issues or concerns and she did that. This became her passion. In 2013 she decided to create Banish with the same goals. To help people who have skin issues. Daisy talks about how she uses social media with intention and purpose and how she avoids the "device addiction" so many people have. Yet, she also talks about the “skin positivity” movement and how that message IS supported through social media and specifically Instagram.  Daisy is focused, driven, and committed to making a difference and she has grown her business into a multi-million-dollar company. At the same time, her number one goal is to help others with similar issues and helping them overcome their own inner critic.  She has generously offered listeners of this podcast the opportunity to enjoy $10.00 off your purchase of Banish products by using this special code: https://banish.com/probeautytalks. The URL will be in our show notes. Enjoy my chat with Daisy Jing, CEO, and Founder of Banish Inc.
