In the late 19th century, it was improved upon by Sarah Boone, an African American woman who was born enslaved. One of the first Black women in U.S. history to receive a patent, she expanded upon the original ironing board, which was essentially a horizontal wooden block originally patented in 1858. With Boone's 1892 additions, the board featured a narrower and curved design, making it easier to iron garments, particularly women's clothing. Boone's design would morph into the modern ironing board that we use today. On this episode of Active Allyship…it's more than a #hashtag! In this episode, we get into two very big and important topics: labor doulas and vaginally delivering a breech baby, specifically, one that is the frank breech position. My dear friend, labor doula, yoga teacher, dancer, and fellow mama, Denise Woods, discusses her experience as a labor doula and the important roles that they play in a woman's journey to giving birth. Especially for first-time mamas, it can be confusing trying to decide if you should have a doula during these COVID times when the doula can't even go into the room with you. We address that in this episode. Then we switch gears to discuss something very rare, which is Denise's vaginal delivery of her son, Lennon, who was in the Frank Breech position. She found out at 38 ½ weeks and did everything she could to turn him before ultimately surrendering to his chosen ideal position, and subsequently scrambling to scrap her dream of a home birth and find a care provider in Los Angeles who would be willing to facilitate a vaginal breech birth. Finding care providers that deliver breech babies vaginally is a dying art, so this was more challenging than you might think. Tune in for the details - and listen to the end for a special offer to view Denise's birth! For full show notes, visit www.themomfeed.comLike this episode? There are a few ways to show your love!
