Kaleidoscopic psychedelia from one of Australia's finest. While it might feel early to call bets on DJs of the decade, Kia Sydney, best known as Kia, is undoubtedly one of them. The Animalia founder began in Naarm's (Melbourne) underground scene in the mid-2010s, crediting a trip to the influential deep techno Japanese festival, Labyrinth, as the inspiration behind her sound. Deep techno might not cut it as a descriptor for Sydney's sound, though. Hypnotic ribbons of steely techno mix with atmospherics and nimble grooves, drawing from IDM, dub and tech house, sharing as much with DJ Nobu and Donato Dozzy (try to find the track that overlaps with Dozzy's own RA Podcast) as well as modern practitioners like Priori and Beatrice M. This distinctly Australian scuttling psychedelia has made Kia one of the most sought-after underground DJs globally. Her brainchild, Animalia, showcases a plurality of sounds and scenes, serving as living proof of the fruitful shift of the 2020s: less serious, perhaps, but with a sense of open-minded worldliness that offers a far more promising vision of what dance music can be and achieve. Sydney's rare talent lies in forging connections, bringing people, sounds and ideas together with a distinct playfulness. Her RA Podcast showcases this alchemy in abundance, weaving classics like Monolake and Enya with peers such as OK EG, Cousin and Command D. As she told us in her 2023 Breaking Through profile, "people tell me I have quite a distinctive sound but I can't tell so much because I hear so many different versions of it." RA.973 serves as confirmation that Kia's style is, to say the least, the mark of a generational talent. @kia-sydney @animalia-label @cirruslabel Read more at ra.co/podcast/973
Enter the wormhole with one of the techno artists we're most excited about in 2025. Born in Osaka and now based in Tokyo, DJ MARIA. joins a decorated lineage of Japan's psychedelic elite, cut from a similarly explorative cloth as Wata Igarashi, Haruka and esoteric icons ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U and DJ Nobu. This nerdy sanctum of deep techno is a notoriously hard world to break into: only the very best make the grade. DJ MARIA.'s head-spinning sets emphasise why she's already part of the club firmament at home, and is now in the midst of a global breakthrough. Her trademark is tapestries of acid, trance and techno that strike a perfect balance between vibrancy, impact and restraint. She bit the bug through a teenage discovery of DVDs showing legendary psytrance raves like Solstice and Vision Quest, yet it wasn't until 2014 that she started DJing, balancing gigs with shifts at Tokyo's Face Records and, as of late, motherhood. Today, as well as producing and touring venues such as FOLD and Bassiani, she helps run two boutique forest festivals—Moment and Transcendence—both of which play a big part in upholding Japan's storied techno tradition. DJ MARIA. has reached these heights principally because of her exceptional talent as a DJ, which is on full display on this week's RA Podcast. The two-hour mix is pure manna for psychedelic techno heads, though we're confident the depth of feeling, subtle pacing and seamless stitching will lure in fans from across the electronic spectrum. RA.971 is a total treasure—the latest wow moment from an artist destined to have a career littered with them. @djmaria-jp Read more at ra.co/podcast/971
This edition of The Bunker Podcast comes in the form of a peak time live set from Doltz, a label artist on DJ Nobu's Bitta imprint who will be performing live at The Bunker x Bitta party in Brooklyn on Friday November 29. When we asked Nobu who else he wanted to bring from the label for this showcase, he immediately suggested Doltz. Doltz started his musical career in 1998 as a drummer in a hardcore punk band, and had a fateful encounter with DJ Nobu, who shares the same musical roots, when they were billed alongside each other at a party in 2022. Impressed by Doltz's live performance, DJ Nobu immediately booked him for his residency party 'reprise' at Womb Tokyo. The two hit it off and began exchanging tracks, with DJ Nobu actively playing out Doltz's tracks while touring across the world and receiving a good response. Doltz's live set at The Bunker will be his US debut!
Occa is a DJ and promoter from the northernmost region of Japan, Hokkaido. Occa has been organizing his own party ARCHIV at the sacred club, Precious Hall for over 10 years. Musically he combines the spiritualism of Psychedelic Music, the storytelling nature of House Music, the sci-fi dystopian feel of Detroit Techno and the trance of Minimal Music in a three-dimensional way through his deft mixing. He has been invited to play at institutions such as DJ NOBU's Future Terror, Mindgames' The Labyrinth/Balance, Spekki Webu's Mirror Zone 5 Years Tour in EU, System Revival and Georgia's legendary Bassiani. This mix is inspired by his Sci-Fi Shamanism set recorded at the Transcendence 2024 ceremony, held deep in the forests of Japan. Expect an absolutely mind altering journey of pounding tribal drums, haunted drones and ethereal melodies delicately sprinkled throughout. Quite the trip if we say so ourselves. English: Varying between half-time steppers, futuristic house music and lucid techno experiments, Konduku has assembled a raft of forward thinking club records. Majoring for the likes of Nous'klaer - a label he's most commonly associated with - to releases with Delsin's Mantis Series, DJ Nobu's Bitta label, and his celebrated Parlama EP for Spazio Disponibile - Konduku delivers an undeniable sonic pattern of uptempo, liquid and polyrhythmic groove. Having relocated to Berlin, curious time signatures and rhythmic pulse remain a priority of his DJ sets, and the artist's ability to stand out comes through an alluring ability to blend & layer sounds that conjure up otherworldy hypnotisms and radical new hybrids in the process. Taking in UK bass culture to his sound, turn-of-the-century tech house and mid-2000s Italian techno, it's an obsession for drums - and a wider scope for what falls between - that gives Konduku a rare, outsider's edge. A major musical talent full of artistic influence, Konduku's sound and style not only inspires but lives long in the memory. This edition of The Bunker podcast comes from our old friend Blacklauren, recorded live at The Bunker at Good Room in July 2022, when he opened for DJ Nobu and Wata Igarashi. Mastered by Russell E.L. Butler. artist statement: "At some point during the late months of 2013, a close friend at the time sent me a podcast mix to listen to from a young Japanese DJ who was completely unknown to me at the time - Wata Igarashi. This same friend coincidentally took me to my first Bunker party a few months prior & I became a regular attendee from that night onwards for many years. In the early spring of 2015, my collaborative partner and I, collectively known as The Long Count Cycle, were asked to do a podcast mix for The Bunker as well as an invitation to play the party following it's release. For us, this was monumental and just when we thought things couldn't get any better, we were invited to play Rural festival and Dommune in Japan that summer based on our mix. One of the artists on the lineup was Wata Igarashi. I was excited for many reasons but also because I now had the opportunity to tell him in person how phenomenal I thought his mix was. We spent quite a bit of time together during that trip and became friends. Additionally, I gained a new perspective on techno seeing how he performed and the sonic palette necessary for creating states of psychedelia and euphoria. In the years following, we would cross paths several times at Nowadays, Good Room & Sustain Release. Each time, I left with a deeper understanding of the music and my place within it. So when I was invited to open for him and the exceptional & exemplary DJ Nobu, there was a visceral sense of validation in being entrusted to set the tone for what was to come that night. Please enjoy, listen on headphones or a system that can carry bass weight, “turn on, tune in, drop out”.
A key exponent of Amsterdam's techno scene, Sandrien definitely counts as one of the finest jockeys around. A gifted selector and just as skilled groove manipulator, she has been a constant in a world full of variables, quietly making it to the top of the game thanks to her impeccably crafted sets, both alone and alongside legends such as Ben Sims, DJ Nobu or Inigo Kennedy. Tirelessly pushing for new approaches to DJing and also production, Sandrien has been carving out a niche of her own, elegantly weaving the classic drive of 90s techno with an all-embracing, future-facing take on electronics, always eager to incorporate new tropes and ways to tell her musical story on the dance floor. Slip into a world full of off-kilter analogue magic and deep-diving tech-y escapism, and let yourself get carried away.
With two major milestones upon us today, we're fortunate enough to be celebrating with one of the finest in electronic music. A new year is upon us and today we also reach a major podcast milestone, to celebrate we welcome none other than contemporary techno legend, DJ Nobu for MNMT 400. With decades of experience and as founder of both acclaimed party ‘Future Terror' and record label ‘Bitta', DJ Nobu has slowly but surely turned from being one of Japan's finest, to one of the world's most in demand selectors. A great friend of Monument who delivered an incredible closing set at our first ever Monument City Festival in 2023, we couldn't be happier to be marking the occasion with him. For this very special mix Nobu presents a stunning introspective excursion through electronica and deeper shades to celebrate the two milestones. Infinite thanks and gratitude to everyone who has made this journey over the last 12 years possible; from all the incredible artists we've been lucky enough to showcase to you, our beloved listeners. Stay tuned in 2024

New York party Merge is often described as a queer techno extravaganza. Over the past two years, it's built a loyal community from the ground up while integrating everything from high-energy trance to disorienting acid into its rave repertoire. Resident Clarisa Kimskii has played a defining role in the collective's growth, largely thanks to the ultra-kinetic and rhythmic pace of her DJ sets. Time and time again, the Washington DC native has demonstrated her ability to lock in dancers through captivating and hypnotic selections across various sub-styles of techno. There are tribal, witchy cuts. Jacking, Detroit-style funk. Psychedelic, DJ Nobu-style grooves and austere sounds that nod to Sandwell District. It's the kind of range that explains why Kimskii has been booked worldwide many years over, and more and more as of late. Her deep understanding of techno's myriad flavours come from two decades of industry experience as well as esoteric productions on labels like Mysteries Of The Deep and L.A.G. (her own short-lived, underrated, essential techno platform). Kimskii's long time in the techno scene, her experience and her expertise is expressed in full form on her RA Podcast Moving from industrial grit to gentle transcendence to heady acid, the mix feels free, fluid but also remarkably precise, just like Kimskii herself. @kimskii Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/901

AIR episode 53 is here, featuring a true craftsman in every sense of the word. @Neel is a techno mainstay, not only as a DJ, and a solo producer, but also as a live performer, best known for his expertly designed ambient journeys. This skillset is especially celebrated in his work with Donato Dozzy as Voices from the Lake. But even if you're not familiar with his work, you've almost certainly listened to a record he had a hand in. A mastering engineer for over a decade, his studio Enisslab has over 400 credits on Discogs, including landmark albums by Deepchord, Pauline Oliveros, Abdulla Rashim, DJ Nobu, Atom TM, Mike Parker, Caterina Barbieri, and of course, his own work. In this conversation, Neel and I get deep on mastering and the evolution of his technical craft, his ears, and his artistry, as well as how each of his creative fields inform one another. As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. The first time we featured DJ Nobu on the RA Podcast, over ten years ago, we called him "one of Japan's best DJs." In hindsight, i think we can all agree that the country qualifier is no longer necessary: he's one of the world's best DJs, bar none. An absolute master at curating and mixing techno, Nobu has helped to inspire a Japanese school of techno that is psychedelic, hypnotic and often very pretty, without losing the genre's oomph or edge. And he's more popular than ever around the world, playing some of the best parties and clubs in pretty much any country or city you could name. But DJ Nobu's roots and heart are close to home. Frustrated with techno in the Japanese capitol, he created his own party in his neighbouring hometown, Chiba, where nightlife was less pretentious and the vibe was a little looser. Future Terror quickly became known as one of Japan's premiere techno parties, and paved the way not only for Nobu himself, but many other Japanese DJs who Nobu and his later partner Haruka gave the chance to shine. The party also recently celebrated its landmark 20th anniversary with its first-ever party in London. This mix is a direct tribute and encapsulation of Future Terror, what Nobu calls a "condensed story" of the series focusing on the more outré elements at the fore—an "awareness of techno" with plenty of more leftfield tracks thrown in. What follows might be a little gentler than you'd expect from Nobu, but it's all top-tier techno mixed with an expert hand. @djnobu_bitta Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/855

Hailing from Okinawa, now-Tokyo-based producer IORI once cut his teeth as an assistant for David Mancuso’s revered party, The Loft, in New York City, where he learnt a meticulous sonic mentality from his audiophile mentor. This permeates his carefully-handled arrangements, which have helped make his name and define a series of spacey, atmospheric originals and remixes for proponent imprints like Phonica and Prologue to name a few. Since his striking 2009 debut, Galaxy, which took its cue from Basic Channel and Manuel Gottsching, the Japanese producer has developed an immensely expressive dubbed-out sound in his own right. The first culmination of that is 2012’s excellent Nexus album for Bitta, a label owned by Far Eastern rising star DJ Nobu, seeing his ambient productions sit nicely with his hypnotic dance tunes. Two year stay in Berlin in early 2010s helped IORI gain a foothold in the international stage. He has since traveled across Europe, validating his characteristic meditative techno set, which is just the tip of his huge musical iceberg that ranges from low-slung house to leftfield oddballs. Despite his return to Japan in 2015, his presence remains strongly felt through frequent European tours. 2016 saw IORI release the Cold Radiance album, where his sci-fi ambient side grew fully- fledged. For an artist that has produced immersive and spacious pieces, it was a logical continuation of his extensive career as a producer. Eschewing the club-orientated perspective, it certainly proved IORI’s expressional depth and does justice to his artistic intention, his acute ears for spellbinding details standing out in sharp relief, which raised expectations of his promising future. The attention the Amsterdam scene currently enjoys is, in no small part, down to the tireless work of Sandrien. She’s been there since the nineties, with residences at Trouw and now De School, close ties to Rush Hour and also through her own parties, which have been bringing the likes of DJ Nobu and Blawan to the city for years. Her uncompromising techno style has taken her around the world and to labels like Ben Sims’ Theory, amongst others. In short, she is a living local legend. Sandrien takes a long view on this mix, starting with an escapist ambient selection that gets your attention. It transports you to a different world before the DJ puts her foot down and brings the grooves. Things remain decidedly cinematic and intergalactic over the course of the next hour, with various shades of deep techno eventually ending up in a place of ambient beauty not far from where you started. It’s a rounded mix that begs to be played over and over.
If you go out regularly in San Francisco, you've probably met Steven Feiler. You've probably seen him fluttering about at Public Works — doing any number of different things, all at once — or on the dance-floor, chatting and dancing like he was born to do both. Lately, he's also making appearance on the other side of the floor, behind the decks. As nonsuit, he mixes up out-of-bounds techno, heavily percussive club music, and acid house, all laid over with queer flavor and intent. He’s making his first appearance for As You Like It this Friday, March 1, at The Great Northern, as AYLI celebrates all things Pisces with two of the heaviest hitters in the biz: Omar S from Detroit and DJ Nobu from Tokyo. He also mixed up an excellent AYLI podcast (his first!) and gave us some insight into his background and practice. Read on below, tune in, and make sure you catch Omar & Nobu.

Miguel will be joining us this coming Friday, September 14, 2018 for The Bunker at Elsewhere along with Legowelt, DJ Nobu, Anastasia Kristensen and many more. In recent years Haruka has established himself at the forefront of Japan's next generation of techno DJs. Since moving to Tokyo at the age of 26, he has honed his skills as a DJ through becoming a resident DJ and co-organizer of DJ Nobu's infamous Future Terror parties. He's played throughout Japan, including appearances at most of the major clubs in Tokyo such as Unit, Contact, Dommune – as well as at the Fuji Rock and Rural festivals Subscribe on Spotify: http://bit.ly/SlamRadioOnSpotify Subscribe on iTunes: itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/slam-radio/id584845850
DJ Nobu has long been Japan's best kept secret, but lately it feels like the cat is well out of the bag as his global touring schedule fills up for 2016. Nobu has been producing the legendary Future Terror parties in Japan since 2001 and launched his Bitta label in 2012. More than anything though, he is known for his completely unpredictable yet always mind-melting DJ sets. We were totally floored by both his prime-time set at The Bunker in Tokyo and his opening set at The Bunker in Osaka in September, 2015. He will be playing the closing set of The Bunker NY takeover of Berghain in February, making his North American debut at The Bunker in Brooklyn in March, in addition to playing alongside The Bunker resident Eric Cloutier at Smart Bar in Chicago. Few DJs demonstrate the depth of vision that seems to come naturally to Nobu.
For our next podcast we head out to the Far East, specifically to Chiba in Japan, where the cult favourite DJ Nobu resides. From there the man behind legendary party Future Terror and esteemed label Bitta has been putting out weird electronics, spacey electro and atmospheric techno since the late 90s. He releases rather infrequently, but when he does you can be sure he never does the same trick twice. It is the same story when he is DJing: he always manages to conjure up fresh tricks, textures and tunes depending on the situation and has put out many official mix CDs to that end. From contemporary electronic pieces to abstract techno, his wide repertoire has made him a favourite with the likes of the Berghain crew and Hessle Audio associate Ben UFO, who played with him recently at the Red Bull Music Academy, whilst he also played a stand out set on Boiler Room at our own Dekmantel festival earlier in the year. The podcast he has put together for us is just over an hour of occult ambient littered with the sounds of the Far East. It is patient and absorbing, zoned out and eerie as well as being hugely organic and natural sounding. Drums only appear in the latter half and when they do, they still come embellished with pixel thin pads, metallic surfaces and harmonic sounds that continue to sooth your mind in fresh new ways.
Simon runs Wildlife Recordings out of Byron bay with his brother Elroy 4.0. He also throws parties under the name White Rhino and in the last 6 years they've hosted a whole range of international artists and live acts. Musically he pushes diverse, forward-thinking sounds, blurring the boundaries between Bass music, Techno, Electronica and Acid/Analogue House & 808 Electro. His latest project is Andromeda Festival, an open air electronica festival featuring the likes of DJ Nobu, Fantastic Man and Tuff Sherm.
