This is the Weight and Healthcare newsletter! If you like what you are reading, please consider subscribing and/or sharing!Diabetes Prevention Programs are a group of programs that are created to prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, often in people who have been identified as at-risk. Most include behavior changes, social support, and include weight loss as a metric and/or the primary outcome. The assumption is typically that any health changes and/or reductions in the development of T2D are because of any weight loss. In discussing these programs previously I've expressed the concern that any differences in health/T2D development were more likely due to behavior changes/support than any weight loss and that, because of their insistence on a weight-loss focus, the programs likely included much more restriction than is necessary to create any health changes, which could create harms including weight cycling (which can actually drive T2D,) weight stigma (which can actually drive T2D,) and disengagement from behaviors that might actually support health and make T2D less likely (with the clear and critical understanding that whether or not someone develops T2D involves myriad factors, many of which are completely outside of their control, including genetics.)Enter the new systematic review “Potential mechanisms for change in diabetes prevention programs” which sought “to investigate potential mechanisms for change in diabetes prevention programs (DPPs), and assess the strength of associations.” Their hypothesis was that “ Weight loss would be less strongly associated with improved health than other mechanisms.” SummaryA group of researchers, several of whom work in weight inclusive Type 2 Diabetes preventions and management, sought to fill a gap in research around Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPPs). These program seek to delay/prevent onset of Type 2 Diabetes and typically include multiple interventions but often target an end goal of weight loss. There is a significant lack of research that even attempts to determine which aspects of DPPs might actually be responsible for any benefits and which might be unhelpful or cause harm. These researchers undertook a systematic review to attempt to determine just that. The AuthorsWe'll begin, as we always do, with the authors. Spoiler alert, this is going to be much shorter than these typically are. The study received no funding and the authors disclosed no conflicts of interest. I'll do my usual deeper dive into their work and, as a reminder, working in the space in which you are researching is not considered a conflict of interest that requires disclosure but is something that always makes me give extra scrutiny to methodology. Bagley - per LinkedIn Bagley is Coordinator of Biomedical Research Support at Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries.Heather B. Blunt - is a Research and Education Librarian, Public Health Lead in Medical and Health Sciences at the Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries with subspecialties in Medical and Health SciencesThe StudyThe authors begin by explaining diabetes prevention programs (DPPs), including that they can vary but often have multiple components including medical and/or psychosocial interventions. They point to the DPP-ILI (Intensive Lifestyle Intervention) as a typical intervention that focuses on creating 7% weight loss using multiple components. They also point out that in one study the DPP-ILI reduced diabetes incidence by 58% compared to a placebo, but that participants don't necessarily find the program either “helpful or tolerable” and the programs often having drop out rates from 40-80%. They also note that the DPP-ILI contains multiple elements - change in weight, physical activity, food, social support, psychological change, education, and self-monitoring and self-awareness that may impact onset of diabetes. Finally, the authors point out that “despite their efficacy, it is possible that DPPs may include harmful elements such as exposure to weight stigma or healthism.” I'll also add, based on about 100 years of research, exposure to the harms of weight cycling since the vast majority of people who lose weight will gain it back. Here the researchers hit on an issue I would suggest is not just with DPPs but with all health interventions that are based on weight loss. As these authors put it, “it is striking how little is known about which components of these interventions cause a delay in diabetes onset, and which components may cause harm.” As is, again, the case with almost all, if not all , research that tries to claim that weight loss create health benefits, more than twenty years in, the research into the DPP-ILI “was not designed to test the relative contributions of dietary changes, increased physical activity, and weight loss to the reduction in the risk of diabetes.” Given our culture's obsession with weight loss (driven by, and with tremendous profit to, the weight loss industry,) the assumption with the DPP (and in general) is always that weight loss (and, typically, very small amounts of weight loss) causes health benefits, literally ignoring all of the behavior changes and other components that precede both the (small, typically temporary) weight loss and the health changes/benefits. The researchers note that “clinicians have focused on the importance of weight loss…recommending weight loss, however, may be a particularly likely candidate to cause harmful or null effects in DPPs.”Considering weight loss, the researchers note that long-term weight loss is “not achievable for most people” and, further, that weight loss programs can induce or exacerbate weight stigma and expose participants to discrimination. They point out that despite the “transient” nature of weight loss in DPPS, “the delayed onset of diabetes can be largely retained, suggesting that mechanisms other than weight loss may contribute to the benefits.”In part 2 we'll look at the study methodology and what they found. If you think my work is valuable, and you want to support my ability to do it, you can become a free or paid subscriber. On the Glossy Podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska break down some of the biggest fashion news of the week. This week, we're talking about the CFDA banning the use of fur in shows on its official New York Fashion Week calendar, following similar decisions by fashion weeks in London, Copenhagen and Berlin. We also discuss the U.K. banning ads from brands like Nike, Superdry and Lacoste over misleading sustainability claims. Lastly, we discuss the Prada-Versace deal, which officially closed this week, just a day before creative director Dario Vitale departed the company. Vitale served as Versace's creative director for only nine months. Later in the episode, Zofia is joined by Leanne Elliott Young, CEO of the Institute of Digital Fashion, to discuss the growing use of digital passports in the fashion industry. Digital product passports, or DPPs, embed product data into a scannable code that lets both retailers and customers track an item's provenance. The idea is to make authentication easier and keep a record of the chain of possession of an item, particularly a luxury item, over the course of its life. The E.U. recently passed a regulation requiring all products sold starting in 2027 to have a DPP, forcing brands to start thinking about implementing this feature. The Institute of Digital Fashion is consulting with brands to help prepare for that rollout.
Christine Russo sits with Anja Sadock of TrusTrace. Anja traced the company's origins back to an activist effort in India, where the founders witnessed firsthand the environmental toll of textile manufacturing on local farmland. That grassroots motivation grew into a global traceability platform designed to help brands see and prove what's happening across their supply chains. Today, TrusTrace provides data and verification tools so companies can understand the social and environmental risks embedded in their sourcing—from forced labor to deforestation—and act on them with real evidence rather than assumptions. Anja described this as essential for accountability and impact, not just compliance. We also discussed the growing regulatory momentum behind traceability, including digital product passports (DPP). While Anja emphasized that most companies are still preparing for the DPP framework, she underscored how it can become a competitive advantage when paired with solid data infrastructure. Rather than fixating on DPP mechanics, she highlighted the bigger picture: traceability as a foundational capability that enables readiness for future regulations, risk management, and even consumer engagement through transparency and repair initiatives. By the time DPPs are fully active toward the end of the decade, brands that have already built credible, data-driven traceability systems will be the ones positioned to lead.
By Matthew Ekholm, Digital Product Passport and Circularity Specialist at Protokol Over the last three years, the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) has developed from an uncertain legislative exercise to a clear and imminent directive for businesses across the electronics, business and furniture sectors. Having initially come into force over the summer of 2024 in the hope of making sustainable products the norm in the EU, businesses globally are having to get to grips with the intricacies of the regulation. So far, we know who the regulation is set to affect, that being any business placing products from the priority groups into the EU marketplace. A clear requirement of the regulation is also the EU''s mandating of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) which is being regulated across product groups. The EU's ESPR roadmap As the regulation sets a range of complex requirements, which differ depending on the product group targeted, businesses looking to stay ahead of this shifting regulation should keep the following three milestones on their radar over the coming years. Action 1: The announcement of the ESPR and its subsequent Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025-2030 (Released in April 2025) After the ESPR came into force in July 2024, there has been a long wait for more clarity on the task for businesses across priority sectors. Finally, in April this year, the Working Plan was published. This has outlined a range of requirements (across vertical and horizontal categories) pertinent to businesses in each sector impacted. For example, for electronics businesses, horizontal requirements such as repairability scoring (which likely includes consumer electronics), recycled content, and the recyclability of electronic equipment will be a key focus. At the same time, for businesses in named vertical industries, such as the textile sector, the Working Plan outlines expectations for material efficiency while reducing the impact on water and waste generation, as well as energy consumption. There are just two examples of how this regulatory update is set to advise and impact different sectors accordingly. The Working Plan says that every product for which ecodesign measures will have to be adopted will have a Digital Product Passport (a digital record of information about the product), to open up data access for businesses, consumers, and public authorities. Knowing early on that this will be mandatory allows businesses to start developing strategies for deploying DPPs, identifying where the necessary data resides, and engaging with DPP solution providers. Action 2: Release of Delegated Acts (Expected 2026-2028 or later, varying by industry) By 2027, the EU is expected to publish its first delegated acts - formal guidelines that will define the specific data requirements for DPPs across priority sectors. In some industries, however, these detailed rules may not be available until 2028 or later. Each delegated act is expected to set out what information must be collected and disclosed for the relevant product groups. Because timelines will vary by sector, well-prepared businesses should already know where the necessary data sits within their operations and supply chains, have a clear implementation roadmap, and be ready to begin pilot initiatives with trusted partners. Knowing early on that this will be mandatory allows businesses to start developing strategies for deploying DPPs, identifying where the necessary data resides and engaging with DPP solution providers. Action 3: Compliance (18 months post the delegated acts being released) The timeline for compliance is expected to be up to 18 months from the publication of each of the delegated acts; however the EU can shorten this period if it is well justified, for example, through environmental urgency or alignment with other policies. Following the release of the delegated acts, businesses supplying to or operating within the EU should leverage pilot learnings to st...

By Lars Rensing, CEO of DPP Solutions Provider, Protokol The European Union continues to put sustainability high on its agenda with the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) passing into law on the 18th July, itself a component of the EU's wider Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP). EU's DPP mandate impact on businesses' sustainability The initiative has come about in no small part because of the EU's ambition to become the first climate-neutral region globally by 2050. With the metric tonnage for global e-waste stood at 62 million in 2022 and on course to reach 82 million by 2030, there is a need to take hold of the systems that are contributing to our carbon footprint. Factor in the hazardous materials such as lead and mercury often contained in such waste, and the breadth and depth of the problem soon becomes apparent. The EU's ESPR is designed to extend product lifespans, boost resource efficiency, and enhance repairability and recyclability as part of its wider sustainability goals. This effort is of particular importance for the electronics and ICT industry as it has been earmarked as a priority product group, primarily due to the amount of e-waste it is responsible for. Mandated as part of the regulation are Digital Product Passports (DPPs), a tool for collecting and sharing product data throughout its entire lifecycle used to illustrate a product's sustainability, environmental and recyclability attributes. Irish businesses who are already familiar with the regulation and what it will entail are already on the right path towards preparation, however those who aren't familiar with the ESPR, DPPs, or how this new mandate will impact them, it's not too late to begin your journey now. Opening up access to data to fuel a circular economy For those who aren't familiar with DPPs, they can serve as digital records of a product's journey, holding essential information such as the raw materials used in its construction, right the way through to how consumers should dispose of it sustainably. The data in a DPP can be accessed by scanning a data carrier such as a QR code or barcode affixed to a physical product with a smartphone. The EU's initiative aims to curb the environmental damage and health risks posed by e-waste by encouraging businesses to provide the environmental impact data on a product to support sustainable decisions when designing and manufacturing future iterations. It also aims to enable consumers to make more informed decisions about the products they purchase based on reliable, transparent insight. So if you think about a laptop, a consumer could in theory scan a QR code that is attached to understand the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process of that device to support a purchasing decision, or they would be able to dispose of it safely or correctly when it reaches end-of-life. By having the ability to provide easily accessible information on the exact materials that make up the product (including hazardous materials often present in electrical items) and how to dispose of these materials safely, the EU considers them as a key feature in fostering a circular economy. What the Irish technology industry can do today For businesses that are keen to begin preparation, what we know is that regulation officially came into force on 18th July, and we expect that information on delegated acts - specific compliance requirements for each product group impacted - will follow in the coming months. This is also expected to include specific timing requirements for compliance for the priority groups. While this isn't confirmed, businesses that it will impact would do well to begin thinking about the first steps of preparation now, to ensure they are not on the backfoot once the rules are published as it will likely be a labour-intensive process. As a first step, this can be assigning one lead or a team that will familiarise themselves with what we know about the business today, and starting to make no...
