Psychology is hard, even when you're just trying to understand what's going on with one impossibly complex person. Romance psychology is particularly hard because you're trying to understand what's going on between two impossibly complex people. Eli Finkel is a professor of psychology at Northwestern University. Paul Eastwick is a professor at the University of California, Davis. Both are experts on the psychology of attraction, dating, and romance and hosts of the Love Factually podcast. Today, Derek asks: Does anybody actually have "a type"? Are we any good at predicting the sort of people we'll fall in love with? Has online dating caused people to over-filter for attraction, even though initial attraction doesn't determine long-term compatibility? How do modern, affluent folks' incredibly high expectations of marriage affect satisfaction in long-term relationships? If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email us at PlainEnglish@Spotify.com. When it comes to how sex and sexuality are portrayed on screen, what does Hollywood get right and wrong? Let’s talk about it! I recently appeared on the Love Factually Podcast, hosted by my friends Paul Eastwick and Eli Finkel. They asked me to select a film about sex, so I picked the 2010 movie Easy A starring Emma Stone. We had a really fun conversation about it, so I wanted to share it with you today. Easy A covers a lot of timely themes, including sexual reputation, virginity, casual sex, and the sexual double standard. We discuss how this film handles them, what the science says about these topics, and also how our sexual culture has shifted since this film first came out. Some of the topics we explore include: Does the sexual double standard still exist for men and women? How is casual sex related to self-esteem? What does this movie get right and wrong about hookup culture? How do reputational concerns influence women’s interest in casual sex? I hope you enjoy this episode of the Love Factually podcast—and if you like what you hear, give Paul and Eli's show a follow on Apple or Spotify. Have a sex question of your own? Over the last couple of decades, holiday movies have increasingly centered around love and romance, and they’re growing massively in popularity. Romantic comedies are one of the most popular film genres. But how accurate are rom-coms in the way they portray sex, love, and relationships? My guests today are the hosts of a new podcast that uses the science of relationships to separate fact from fiction in some of the biggest rom-coms of all time. We're going to explore some of the things that Hollywood gets right and wrong in the way they depict relationships. I am joined by Dr. Paul Eastwick and Dr. Eli Finkel. Dr. Eastwick is a Professor at the University of California, Davis, where he studies romantic attraction and close relationships. Dr. Finkel is a professor at Northwestern University and author of the bestselling book The All-Or-Nothing Marriage: How the Best Marriages Work, which we discussed back in Episode 45. Is this how relationships typically start in real life? Falling in love at first sight is a common theme in rom-coms. But what does the science say about this? Opposites often attract on screen, but is that also true IRL? What are some things films often get wrong about sex? Is it necessarily a bad thing if rom coms aren’t always accurate? In today's episode I am joined by my dear friend, Dr. Duana Welch. Dt. Duana has been on the show a couple times, and today we are really focusing on dating advice after a gray divorce. We talk about why gray divorces are happening more often and what the reasons may be behind that. Dr. Duana educates us on what individualism is and how it impacts relationships. She then shares some advice on how to start dating after divorce, setting up your dating profile, and what things to look for in a future love in hopes that it'll last forever! Tune in to hear some great tips and learn more about love and lasting relationships. In this episode:[3:17] Dr. Duana Welch shares her story of finding love again after divorce.[5:37] Why are gray divorces happening more often?[10:41] Why has individualism started to develop in long term marriages?[11:40] What can someone do to prepare themselves for finding love later in life?[13:49] Are we less happy because of individualism? [18:35] What are the steps for a woman to find love?[29:31] A final piece of advice from the love doctor.Key Takeaways: Every year that a man is single, whether he's single because his wife died or because he never got married, or because he's divorced, or any combination of these, as soon as he's single, his odds of death from all known causes increases by a factor of six. This is not as high for women because they tend to have more social support.Science shows that when people are looking at dating apps, they'll likely swipe right on people who are 10% better looking than they are. The likelihood of you choosing who to date only based on looks won't lead you to matching with your perfect partner. Learning more about their character is more important than their looks. If you can find and be someone kind and respectful, your love life is going to go great. And if you can't, it will not.Quotes: “In an individualist society, people tend to have a longer strategy of adulthood. So what that means is they get married later and everything about their life happens a little bit later and there's just not the taboo about divorce that there used to be. So, I think those are a lot of the reasons why this phenomenon is happening, but I also know from research that we never stop needing love.” - Dr. Duana Welch"If you don't ever have to sign on for problems, then you probably aren't going to sign on for relationships because relationships bring joy, but they also bring challenges. What we need is not necessarily collectivist or individualist. We need interdependence. We need to find someone where we help each other feel safe enough where we can mutually depend on each other and we can mutually put the other person's needs co-equal with ours. In the absence of that, you're going to find a lot of unhappiness and even higher divorce rates.” - Dr. Duana Welch“Men routinely read women as interested in them who make full eye contact while smiling at them with a real eye crinkling smile.” - Dr. Duana WelchGuest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. Susan, your host, welcomes Duana Welch to today's episode. Dr. Duana (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for writing and dating coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives.   A former professor in Florida, California, and Texas for over 20 years, she has contributed to NPR, Psychology Today, and numerous other outlets and podcasts.   Her first book, Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do, is now out globally in five languages; its revised and updated edition released in 2022. Love Factually for Single Parents: [& Those Dating Them] is the second book in the series, specifically geared toward finding the right partner not only for readers but their families.   She is an expert for Paired, the world's top-rated relationship app for couples. Her client practice is global via Zoom.   Key Takeaways: Dr. Duana discusses the cases of people who lost their spouses after a lifetime of dedication to that relationship and the challenge of dating again. People are not looking for the same things; not everyone on a dating app wants to find a partner. People sometimes act as if they want a relationship, but often, they don't even know what they are looking for; they might not even realize they are not presenting themselves honestly. Actions speak louder than words; check if people behave how they say they feel. Remember this question: “What is your end goal for the relationship?” (For yourself and others.) Learning how you show up in relationships and your attachment style are great tools to return to the dating field. Dr. Duana explains different attachment styles: Secure, Avoidant, Anxious, or Disorganized. Once a partner is deceased or there is a living former spouse, there are stakeholders (the children, the spouse, their parents, and friends are stakeholders). Most secure attachers can stay married for a lifetime; when their partners did not pass away, the reason for the separation can be their spouse, someone who behaves in a way that makes it impossible for a relationship to last. Dr. Duana walks the listeners to her steps when coaching her clients. Ask the hard questions first! Starting by having sex and seeing if feelings develop is really a recipe for disaster. Dr. Duana helps people navigate the online dating experience, realizing what is important, what to expect, and how not to waste time. Find someone who can understand that you will always love your deceased person. Dr. Duana leaves the audience with these wise words: If you can find and be someone kind and respectful, your relationship will likely go very well; if you can't, I promise it won't.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com If you find this episode helpful, please donate   Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find — and Keep — Love, by Amir Levine, and Rachel Heller   Meet Dr. Duana Welch Love Science Media

In this episode: [00:50] The next step for finding love! [3:12] Showing your dating ad to your community of friends and family creates more eyes on finding someone for you. [5:47] What advice does Duana have for photos? [12:25] Prepare yourself before you post your ad. [15:46] How are you determining your “must-haves”? Key Takeaways: Take pictures that show you on a great day, but not on a glamor shot or with filters. Don't mislead people. The photos you use shouldn't be older than 6 months. Put the word FUN in your profile at least twice! If a quality in the person is a deal breaker, do not try to get over it. There's a reason you've been through a divorce, don't set yourself up for that again. Quotes: “Everyone thinks it's a numbers game; they get told it's a numbers game, it is not. It's a knowledge game. What do you know? If you know the right stuff and you can apply it, then it becomes about interacting with very few carefully chosen people.” - Duana Welch “Know your must-haves backward and forward and how you're going to assess them. That list is indispensable. If you try this without a list, you're going to get predictably terrible results most of the time. Do this with a list! And then you can say to yourself, is he kind? That's a must-have and should be on everybody's list. Is he kind? How do I assess that? I would ask him if your ex was here, what would she say was the reason for your divorce? And then I'm going to listen really carefully not only to what he says because that can give me some good insight into who he is and whether it'll work for me. Most people will give very different answers from what someone else says vs. what they'd say.” - Duana Welch Guest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. In today's episode, we are talking to Love Doctor Duana Welch. Duana is an author and love coach who helps women find love the love of their life. Using her experience of finding love after divorce, she tells us how to get out there and find love again. Duana talks about the ten steps she has created to find a beautiful and solid relationship, also available in her book. It can feel intimidating to start dating and putting yourself out there again, but tune in to this episode for some great tips! In this episode: [1:19] What led Duana Welch to her Love Doctor role? [2:34] Duana gives us advice on how to start dating post-divorce. [7:48[ Duana talks about taking action to get out there, and their mindset will change as a result. [9:30] Duana takes us through the steps of her program to begin finding your match. [21:28] What should your ad look like on a dating app? Key Takeaways: Have the courage to look for someone. Put yourself into the dating market. Most people don't even look. Love is for those who have the courage to date. Create a list of everything you want in a partner, but be realistic. Do you have the same qualities that you are looking for in a partner? Sign up for one month only on dating apps. This tells the algorithm to keep pushing you to try and get you to sign up for another month. If you sign up for multiple, they won't keep pushing your profile after the first month. Quotes: “Who we love and how successful that relationship is, has more impact on our health, our wealth, our longevity, our career success, our life satisfaction, and even our sex life than any other choice we will make.” - Duana Welch “The first action I want people to take is to write down everything they want in a partner. Everything.” - Duana Welch Guest Bio: Dr. Duana Welch (pronounced DWAY-nah) is known for dating advice, dating coaching, online dating coaching, relationship advice, relationship coaching, and marriage coaching that relies on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the love of their lives. Today's guest is Dr. Duana Welch, and she's the best-selling author of the book Love Factually. Her mission is to help other's find the love they want by using science as a guide. Duana has written a series of books filled with relationship advice, but she only writes books that she needed. She became a single mother when her husband's addiction began to spiral.  Their son was born with a life-threatening disease, and she realized she couldn't trust her husband to administer the medication. So, she left and never came back. She had her child but nothing else. She left behind her job, home, friends, and the man she loved. Years later, Duana's life transformed, and she created a new life, but she never forgot how hard it was. If you've lost a relationship, feel lost, or want to find love, this episode is for you.  Dr. Duana Welch is an author and coach who applies social science to solve real-life relationship issues. Her books include, Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I do, Love Factually for Single Parents, and the Love Factually Singles series. She's also an expert at the relationship app Paired. She's been a professor at universities in Florida, California, and Texas and has contributed to NPR, PBS, Psychology Today, Redbook, Huffington Post, and Time to name a few. She's the only guest invited to appear three times on Jordan Harbinger's former podcast, The Art of Charm. Her format blends heart, soul, and science. Duana's story is so inspiring. She has walked through the fire and made it through.Kerry Brett and Duana Welch share lots of strategies and cover a lot of ground. Topics include:Why learning certain information like relationship science around dating helps you be successful or not.Why attachment style determines the success of your relationships.Men who have avoidant attachment styles cannot change that. Both anxious attachment style and avoidant attachment style both have securities; it just manifests in different ways.Learn what a secure partner looks like, find that, and don't dismiss a secure man as boring.Finding is love is not luck, and it is possible. Why you can find love right now, and you don't need to get your ducks in a row first. Why it's easier to date and more effectively during the pandemic. How the pandemic can help you date smarter, not harder. Why secure people don't wait for everything to be perfect in their life to date. How to write a dating profile that does the work for you.Qualities people everywhere in the world demand in a partner and why you should too. If you look for someone kind and respectful, your love life will go well. When writing your profile, use words that describe the person you want to meet rather than adding descriptions about yourself.Be choosey and selective, and don't forget to ask the hard questions. You can find love online; quickly look at Dr. Duana Welch; she used the strategies in her book and found love in less than a week.  To find out more about Dr. Duana Welch or purchase her books, Love Factually, Love Factually for Single Parents (& Those Dating Them), and the Love Factually Single Series, go to www.lovefactually.co or follow on Facebook or Twitter.

How jam-packed is this week's episode of the Empire Podcast? How bumper-sized is it? Well, it's so huge — bursting at the seams with four — count 'em, FOUR! — interviews — that we have, for the first time ever (we think!), had to split the pod into two parts. In this, Parte The Firste, Chris Hewitt chats to British actors David Thewlis and Richard Armitage (both of whom have their own microphones, throwing down the gauntlet to other thesps everywhere) about, respectively, Atom Egoyan's Guest Of Honour and new audiobook, The Chekhov Collection Of Short Stories. Plus, they natter on about guitars, decapitation, midlife crises, Captain America, and building a fort at home. Then, in the virtual podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, Amon Warmann, and James Dyer to answer a couple of listener questions about filmic fruit and movie cops, while the film fact segment — aka Love Factually — takes an unexpected turn. Enjoy. There's more to come!

The prospect of divorce is daunting. Wouldn’t it be great if science could help us with life’s hardest decisions? Well, this week’s episode is allll about the science behind love and divorce.  Duana Welch, author of Love Factually, joins me to talk about those harsh realities of divorce, and helps us take a look at love, relationships, and divorce from a scientific perspective. She holds a PhD in psychology,  contributes to Psychology Today, eHarmony, and others. All of her books rely on science rather than opinion to help men and women find and keep the right partner; or decide when it’s time to call it quits.  In this episode we talk about the social science to help solve real-life relationship issues, some of the circumstances that occur when a divorce needs to happen and even why there are better and worse times for re-marriage. Plus, we even talk about why family blending is so hard, the act of forgiveness and boundary setting.  Duana reminds us that, yes, life after divorce will be awful for a while. But it will get much better, especially once you can understand, embrace and practice the science behind it all.  Show Highlights What gives people pause when considering divorce, from a scientific perspective (5:58) How women can avoid being a ‘sex object’ following divorce (10:27) The fail rate for second and subsequent marriages is worse than first marriages and some of the reasons why (15:17) Why children may be the reason subsequent marriages don’t work and some ways to help children work through being a member of a blended family or deciding when it’s the right time to marry again (16:53) Sometimes you just have to leave your marriage, understanding some circumstances where divorce needs to happen (20:40) Duana shares the shocking stat of how long couples actually wait before they go to marriage counseling & the kind of counseling that is effective (33:56) Evaluating the severity of the damage in your marriage (35:38) Forgiveness and divorce, the barriers to forgiveness and the science behind it (41:21) How to effectively set and maintain your boundaries (43:53) Learn More Duana Welch: Dr. Duana Welch is the original Love Factually author and coach known for using social science to solve real-life relationship issues.  Following her PhD in psychology, she taught at universities in Florida, California, and Texas across 20 years. Does love at first sight exist? What’s the difference between love and lust? What do we look for in a partner? How does our upbringing influence our relationships? Why do people cheat? Love is a complex topic and one that we have a lot of questions on, so this week we’re breaking these common questions down, looking at idealisations versus reality; attachment theory and how to identify where you sit on this scale and how that might play out in our relationships; whether constructs like advertising, porn and Disney movies create a sense of unrealistic expectations; how often we’re really having sex and likewise how often we’re all being unfaithful; polygamy, swinging and why we’re so judgemental and so much more. Laura Mucha has spent ten years studying the above before writing the brilliant book Love Factually, and today she’s sharing an honest insight into a topic that affects us all. She talked about the research that shows that most children do not recover well from multiple upheavals but those where parents remarry once – recover much better.  She spoke about taking time in the introduction and being clear about your boundaries.  Dr Welch's book has a step by step guide to dating as a single parent including protecting yourself and your child.  She recommends trusting your intuition and suggests combining reading her book with reading Gavin De Becker's book The Gift of Fear.    We spoke about how longitudinal research (research over a long period of time) highlights that recovery from divorce is variable and that those who do recover move on with their lives and relationships in an adult manner.  Dr Welch spoke about how important it is to observe a potential partner's behaviour with others in the environment and how important it is to make sure that the person is kind, of good character and treats others well.  She spoke about only dating when the children are not with you – either when the other parent has them or when you arrange baby sitters or child minding.  She spoke about the importance of not talking about your children and your family all the time and that keeping the details of family life out of the conversation allows you time to assess this person's commitment and desire to be a step parent.  She highlighted that this is a slow process and encouraged people to find out as much as they can about the person via the internet, friends, family and even their ex partner.  We agreed that people who are not willing to have adult conversations as to why relationships ended and what the challenges of previous relationships were.   Dr Welch talked about the series of books she is launching Love Factually Single Series that deal with one issue per book.  The first book coming out on Valentine's Day is on online dating and profile creation.    You can find Dr Welch at LoveFactually.co.    Thanks for joining me for the A to Z of Sex this week.  Write to me with suggestions for the show, questions you want answered at drloribeth@atozofsex.com  and I will answer on the show.  Follow me on twitter, Instagram and...

What in this world is more difficult than dating? Finding the right person to share your life with is a challenge for anyone no matter how beautiful, rich or talented you are. As Wes Hayden so romantically sang to Jillian Harris on The Bachelorette in 2009 and then the following year on Bachelor Pad to Gia Allemand “Some say Love It Don’t Come Easy”. Of course, he proclaimed to both of these women that he wrote this exact same song for them….UGH….WHAT a sleaze ball. Needless to say, he was not there for the right reason….but I digress. Back to my question….so what’s more difficult than dating? Is it math or quantum physics or maybe it’s figuring out the meaning of life? All of those things are nothing compared to what the real answer is. Are you ready for the answer…..it’s dating as a single parent. I can hear everyone right now saying….that’s right Terah! Dating is tough enough but dating as a single parent is even more difficult. Who wants to waste time away from your kids to go on another bad date that will end up going nowhere? Also it’s one thing if your own heart gets broken but no one wants to destroy your kid’s hearts with a relationship that they were invested in as well. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to read a book that would help single parents and those dating them with scientifically sound advice to help them? Hell YES it would!! Our guest today Duana Welch, PhD just released her second book in the “Love Factually” series- for single parents. We interviewed Duana for her first book, “Love Factually, 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do”, and it’s our most downloaded episode. We titled that podcast “Scientifically Proven Steps To Love”. Duana’s latest book “Love Factually For Single Parents & Those Dating Them” provides single parents with the first guide that relies on science instead of opinion to help this large and growing group of men and women find the right partner not only for themselves, but their families. From getting over your ex to finding time to date, and from finding your partner to blending families, the Single Parents edition of this popular series of books paves the way so we all win at lifetime love. Guest Introduction: Dr. Duana Welch applies social science to people's real-life relationship issues. She is the author of “Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do,” which uses science to guide men and women through every stage of dating, from before they meet until they commit. Her second book, “Love Factually For Single Parents [& Those Dating Them],” releases worldwide in January 2019. Duana has been a professor at universities in Florida, California, and Texas. She has contributed to NPR, PBS, LA Talk Radio, Redbook, Time, The Daily Mail, Huffington Post, XO Jane, Psychology Today, Psych Alive, eHarmony, Plenty of Fish, redOrbit and numerous other outlets, podcasts and videos. She coaches men and women who want more love in their lives, globally via Skype, phone, and FaceTime. Interview Summary: In this interview, Duana begins by talking about her background and why she got into relationship coaching. She shares the story how she met her husband online, and discusses a study that shows couples who meet online tend to be happier. She also explains why "hunting" in the nightlife scene is a costly strategy, and how relationships only based on looks often don't work out. Duana references another study about how men ascribe better qualities to women that they're physically attracted to. Chris then talks about dating based on status and resources. Next, Duana and Chris answer the age-old question: Can men and women just be friends? Duana explains why women look for provider and protector traits in romantic interests. They discuss the ways that women express interest in and test for interest in men. Duana and Chris also talk about some of the psychological games that people engage in when competing for a mate. Duana goes on to explain why women love humor, and offers tips for how men can use more humor in their interactions. Chris then talks about differences in people's range of behavior based on their status or hierarchy in a group. Duana shares advice on how reserved guys can be more open and direct, and emphasizes the importance of self-confidence. She discusses how dating is one long social intelligence test. Chris talks about the paradox of "just being yourself." Duana then offers tips on how to make better first impressions and reveal information about yourself in the right way. She explains why women sometimes play hard to get. She also shares advice on how men can more clearly recognize consent. Duana goes on to discuss the influence that looks and other non-physical traits play in attraction and love. She reveals the five traits that real love comes down to:  kindness, respectfulness, lovingness, loyalty, and intelligence. We then ask Duana why people often have a harder time finding the right partner in today's world. She explains how we've become spoiled by choice as a result of the internet and online dating. She also talks about why as women increase in achievement, status, education, their mating pool actually shrinks.  Chris and Duana discuss the social pressures regarding casual sex, differences between men and women, and the biological and cultural influences. Chris describes how past partners have affected what and who he's attracted to. Finally, we ask Duana what it means to provide and protect in today's society, where women might make more money or have greater status or power compared to men. She offers advice to help men navigate the modern dating world and find true love. Dr Duana Welch is back again to destroy some myths around male emotionality. It's certainly not a fluffy show. She explains that men tend to fall in love faster, and fall out of love longer and harder. Men also experience love at first sight at a much larger rate than women. Essentially, research has shown that when it comes to romantic relationships, men are just as, if not more emotional, than women. This is shown by statistics that men, who typically don't need marriage, choose to get re-married more often than women, after a divorce. And statistics have shown that men tend to say “I love you” sooner than the woman. All around this is a pretty interesting episode. Duana is the author of Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do (2015)—the first science-based book to take you from before you meet until you commit to The One. Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership

Dr. Duana (DWAY-nah) Welch is known for applying social science to people's real-life relationship issues. She is the author of Love Factually, the first book that uses science rather than opinion to take men and women from before they meet until they decide whether to commit. She has been a professor at universities in Florida, California, and Texas, and she writes for publications at Psychology Today, eHarmony, and others. She also coaches men and women who want more love in their lives, via Skype and at her office in downtown Eugene, Oregon. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra If you can find and be someone kind and respectful your love life will go great. And if you can’t it won’t. Before you make a commitment to a partnership it is about how similar you are.  After you make the commitment it is about how kind and respectful you are. When You Tripped Up Her picker was broken.  Dr. Duana would get stars in her eyes even when there was a deal breaker from the onset. But she didn’t want to look too closely at that.  And she would get pretty deeply involved and then figure it out. By that time it absolutely ripped her heart apart to have to leave. This story we can all relate to. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever Duana found in her research on relationship science that what she was doing in her relationships, was the exact thing that tells men not to take her seriously. Her “DUH” moment was realizing that she can value herself and be valued. And that can extend all the way to the bedroom. Proudest moment in partnership When her husband suggested they move to a state where she could teach again.  This was a huge sacrifice for him, and it showed the level of commitment he had to being a partnership.  He is her hero. Current Partnership that Has You Excited No surprise here, it is her partnership with her husband. Both what she has been able to do in her life and what he has been able to do is exciting. Diana’s partnership with her husband has allowed her to stop focussing her feelings of security or insecurity. Instead she is able to work from a bedrock or secure relating so she can live the best life she can live. Turn towards your partner rather than away. It’s what happens in the small moments of partnership that create the overall feeling.
