With a growing number of divorces occurring between people aged in their 50s and older, adult children are being impacted in a way that is less well understood. 

Rates of divorce in America are low, and have actually fallen nearly 50% since the 1980's. However, in one group the rates are rising. People over 50 are leaving their marriages in much higher numbers. We speak to relationship researchers Dana Weiser from Texas Tech University and Rosie Shrout at University of British Columbia about this phenomenon termed "the grey divorce" and take listener calls.

There's plenty of chat on social media about so-called ‘grey divorce'. But are older people around the world really splitting up in record numbers?The truth is it's hard to be sure, because reliable figures on global divorce rates don't exist. Where research has been done - most notably in the US - there's some evidence that rising numbers of people are deciding to go their separate ways later in life. We hear from three Americans, including 65 year-old Laura in Virginia. Her immediate feelings post break up - after almost 30 years of marriage - included loneliness and personal reappraisal. “It was also a complete loss of my sense of identity,” said Laura. “I had my ex husband's last name longer than I had my own name. I was a mother and my divorce coincided with my kids launching. So it was, okay, who am I now?”For 68-year-old Steven in North Carolina, who split from his husband eight years ago, new relationships also required adjustment.“It has taken time to rebuild that kind of trust on the emotional level,” he said, “and then taking your clothes off at 60 is different to taking your clothes off at 45!” Two women from Malaysia and South Africa also reveal what grey divorce is like from an adult child's point of view. Key drivers include a reduced social stigma surrounding divorce, increased financial independence, particularly among women, and longer, healthier life expectancies that encourage individuals to seek personal fulfillment in their later years. The implications of grey divorce are profound, particularly concerning financial well-being. The division of accumulated assets, including complex retirement plans and pensions, becomes a central legal and financial challenge. Notably, older women disproportionately experience a significant decline in their standard of living and wealth post-divorce, a vulnerability that is often exacerbated by lower re-partnering rates compared to men. This one's a little spicy! We're talking about why midlife women have affairs. The answer will probably surprise you. And you'll certainly be surprised about how pervasive some affairs are.Then, we'll talk about the rise of grey divorce. Although the overall divorce rate has declined slightly, the rate of grey divorce has doubled in the last 20 years. Why are so many over-50 couples splitting the sheets?And finally, I'm sharing a couple shifts that have helped us stay together for nearly 20 years. Just like everyone else's, our marriage hasn't been as perfect as it looks on social media.
