On this week's edition of the podcast we reflect on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Mount Juliet and wonder, where do we go from here? Rory McIlroy echoed Shane Lowry's calls for a date change, but what slot in the calendar could make the Irish Open the attractive proposition we want it to be? We also discuss Team Ireland's Olympic medal hopes after Rory and Shane were pictured wearing Irish green. Across the Atlantic, it was another huge week for Seamus Power who's now eyeing an open date at Royal St. George's while we round-up the rest of the Irish action after another frantic week on the fairways. As ever, we hope you all enjoy the listen. Don't forget to subscribe and let us know what you think.
Dave & Jonny were at the 2021 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Mount Juliet this week, so we recapped our experience of the event from a great winner in Lucas Herbert, strong performances from some Irish players including Cormac Sharvin and Shane Lowry, to waiting with some friends on Friday to see if they survived the cutline. The course played really well and there were some brilliant highlights from the week, including getting to chat with some players who are Friends of The Pod and watching the likes of Rory, Shane & GMac back in Ireland. On this week's edition of the podcast we recap a fruitful week for Ireland's fairway fliers, from Leona Maguire's best Major finish at the KPMG Women's PGA to big pay-days for Niall Kearney and Seamus Power on both sides of the Atlantic. We also look ahead to this week's Dubai Duty Free Irish Open where 5,000 spectators a day will be given great access to a field that includes Major winners Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell. Far from a vintage renewal, we discuss the outlook for our National Open and what's in store at Mount Juliet, where we were also joined by Niall Kearney to look ahead to a big week in Kilkenny. As ever, we hope you enjoy the listen. Don't forget to subscribe and let us know what you think.
Super short and sweet this week, but FULL of good stuff. Massive appreciation to Matt Sandercock who amongst a flurry of estate, tour and media commitments still had time for little oul me and all of you listening in. So what's changed at Mount Juliet a year or so on from when the Irish Open was meant to have taken place on site last year. It's the 30th Anniversary of Jack Nicklaus Signature design at Mount Juliet to boot so it is quite a bumper month if not a bumper year for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open to be held at the estate once more. We’re recapping round 4 of the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship with Rick Gehman, Mark Immelman and Greg DuCharme. Hudson Swafford takes home the hardware over in the Dominican Republic. This is his second career PGA Tour victory and first since 2017 (1:55) Tyler McCumber almost found himself in a sudden death playoff, after a clutch Swafford par on 18 it ended in a solo runner-up finish. What more can we expect from McCumber in the future (9:15)? Mackenzie Hughes finished solo 3rd after battling through a windy final round, we chat about the PGA Tour’s “scrappy Canuck” (16:10). John Catlin won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open over on the European Tour, is he a name to keep an eye on as his Official World Golf Ranking creeps up (27:00)? We wrap with a peak at our One and Done league and Matchup Challenge, hint: Mark gets triggered after a Will Zalatoris backdoor Top 10 (29:35). ————————— Check us out on YouTube for video podcasts and exclusive content, visit https://www.youtube.com/FirstCutPodcast 'First Cut' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Castbox and wherever else you listen to podcasts. On the show this week, we leave our usual format aside to do a special combined podcast with Chris Solomon on No Laying Up, who recently visited for his first Irish Golf Trip, playing four magnificent courses in a whirlwind 48 hours. Barry and Chris talk in detail about the four courses and how each is special in their own unique way. We alternated play between two links and two parkland courses: The Island Golf Club (which hosts an Open Championship Qualifier every year), The K Club Palmer Course (host of the 2006 Ryder Cup and the 2016 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open), Portmarnock (host of more Irish Opens and Championships than there is space to list) and Killeen Castle (host of the 2011 Solheim Cup).
