Thomas Gilroy contributed greatly to the growth of the game of golf in Ireland over the period from 1885 to 1895. During his time in Ireland he was recognised as the best player in the country, holding a handicap between scratch and +6. Gilroy was a founding member at Dollymount, Portrush, Mornington & Baltray. A serial winner and course record setter, he spread the gospel a gift from Scotland. I hope you enjoy his story! Many thanks for tuning in. Rory Mcilroy had another close call but narrowly missed out on winning his 2nd Irish Open title in Royal County Down as Rasmus Hojgaard claimed the victory with a blistering final round 65. Jonny and Michael catch up to talk about how Rory's season has been a collection of near misses, and that includes 3 wins! The Presidents Cup is next week and we're both firmly in the International Team camp. Leona Maguire got benched for the Solheim Cup but we don't think that made much difference to the outcome, the USA were always going to win this.
Beige and Kyle return to dicuss an eventful weekend in the world of professional golf, including the USA's victory at the Solheim Cup, Rory McIlroy blowing another tournament late on Sunday at Royal County Down, and share details from Michael Rosenberg's report in Sports Illustrated, chronicling the dysfunction surrounding last year's proposed 'framework agreement'. Outside of professional golf, Beige shares the experience of booking tee times in person at 5am, and Kyle recaps this year's Barefoot Classic. Plenty to talk about after the Amgen Irish Open concluded at Royal County Down, the Solheim Cup played out in the States and LIV Golf finished up their 2024 exhibition series in Chicago. Listen as Martin & Des discuss Rory's failure to close out at RCD, a spirited fightback in Virginia and the irrelevancy of Jon Rahm's win in Chicago. There was epic coffee golf this week as the Irish Open was at the number one ranked golf course in the world according to Golf Digest, Royal County Down. We will discuss the golf course and the tournament which saw Rasmus Hojgaard birdie 4 of the last 5 holes and got a little bit of help from Rory McIlroy on his way to the win. The Solheim Cup came back home as the United States team won for the first time since 2017 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club outside of Washington D.C. LIV Golf finished their individual season at Chicago as Jon Rahm won the season long individual championship. We will discuss what could be coming with LIV and whether or not it has been successful. Tim traveled to the Big Apple this week and played Ferry Point while he was in New York City. He will give his impressions of his first time in NYC. How important is the quality of the golf course to your enjoyment of watching professional golf? Did Royal County Down add to the Irish Open or could it have been played at a number of other courses and hold your attention just the same? Also, we look back at the Solheim Cup and ask if there was anything Europe could have done differently to keep hold of the trophy for another couple of years...
Big news this week with Nick O'Hern snagging an Ace last week in the Wagga Pro-Am, we start the show by finding out what happened. To be fair we probably couldn't have stopped Nick telling us as he basks in his well deserved moment. Very exciting, and capped off a wonderful trip to Wagga for Nick!Tigers new clothing line is out, and the comments online are brutal. Nick and Mark give their thoughts, and they're not positive.Mark talks through the controversy at 13th Beach Golf Club, who we spoke to a couple of weeks ago on the pod. Three members have played a prank to highlight their views on the new female membership fee structure, leading to a suspension. The membership is divided, Mark says that a petition for change has momentum.Nick watched some of the final individual LIV event of the year and explains how the promotion/relegation system works, and those players currently in the danger zone. We discuss the captains exemption, we're unsure if it still is in place. If not, is Bubba in trouble? We have a Voicemail on rakes in bunkers, asking whether we even need rakes. Nick and Mark both have a strong view. After the turn, we chat about the Irish Open. Nick loved it and talks through some of the key moments. Mark loves watching golf at Royal County Down, and would love to visit one day. Thanks to Southern Golf Club, this leads into Marks Top 5 - the Top 5 Irish courses that he'd love to play, by name only as he's never been there. And Nick tells us the Irish course that he has a picture of on his wall at home.Nick and Mark decide they want to get Nicks old caddy Wilbur on for a bonus pod, and they explain what 'chiselling' is in the caddy world. Plenty to discuss in the PING global results, starting with the Solheim Cup, but plenty more to discuss - including the winner of the Wagga Pro-Am!Feedback is thanks to Flinders Golf Club, an historical treasure, but it may as well be sponsored by Nick O'Hern as 90% of the feedback was on Nick's Ace in Wagga. See the video here. And our Masterclass this week comes from Nick, for the watchMynumbers app, and Nick is talking us through tips for playing uphill lie bunker shots.A fun show, and if you're enjoying the podcast, please tell a friend or two about it. An awesome weekend of September golf has Andy and Brendan in great spirits for this Monday episode. To start, Brendan downplays a Browns Victory Monday in the Swag Sports Minute, but Andy is riding high after a great day at the ballpark and delivers the news that Andrew Price won the Crump Cup. After that, the two dive into a loaded weekend of golf, starting with the Irish Open at Royal County Down where Rasmus Hojgaard chased down Rory McIlroy and the Great Manassero for the win. Andy and Brendan share their thoughts on how RCD played for the pros, the TV coverage (or lack thereof) of the tournament, and another disappointing finish for Rory in a tournament that means a lot to him. After that, Meg Adkins calls in from Dulles to help recap the Solheim Cup as the Americans finally secured a win in the competition. Meg shares on-the-ground insights from the week, hitting on the shuttle disasters of Friday morning, standout performances from Nelly Korda and Rose Zhang, Charley Hull's smoking habits continuing to take over social media, and who will takeover as captains for both sides in the next Solheim Cup in September 2026. After wrapping up with the Solheim Cup, LIV Bolingbrook gets featured after Bryson DeChambeau said the course "played close to a major championship test" this week. Jon Rahm took home both the tournament and the season-long title, leading Andy and Brendan to wonder what this means looking back on not only his 2024, but also his career. Producer PJ then joins to share the great news that the leading Champions Tour gambling podcast has stayed hot and even improved on last week's efforts, as Brendan secured a Steve Stricker playoff win for those tailing the picks. To finish things off, Patton Kizzire gets a shoutout for winning the Procore, with Creator Classic alum Wes Bryan taking in a T13 in Napa.
In this episode we recap what was a whirlwind weekend of golf around the globe - from the US winning the Solheim Cup in Virginia, to the Irish Open at Royal County Down, to the Procore Championship in Napa on the PGA Tour, to LIV Chicago where Jon Rahm captured the season's individual championship. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/livingituppod/support
This Wednesday episode previews a beefy week of golf, with tournaments of interest taking place across the world from Northern Ireland, to Napa, to Virginia, to Bolingbrook, Illinois. Andy and Brendan begin with some early LIV talk as the league's Individual Championship makes its way to Bolingbrook Golf Club. Brendan reads through the pre-tournament notes, with some editorializing from Illinois local Matt Rouches as well as Andy's personal experiences. They discuss Phil Mickelson's appreciation for the course and Arthur Hills as an architect, and why LIV decided to change the routing for their tournament. Next up is the Irish Open, the Event of the Week, being played at Royal County Down. Andy runs down the field list, noting home clubs of notable players teeing it up in Northern Ireland this weekend. The two then discuss the coverage schedule for the event, with most of it airing on the NBC Sports App due to a loaded weekend of golf. Attention then turns to the Procore Championship in Napa, the first event of the new-look FedEx Fall and Brendan previews some Fall SGS Awards to keep an eye on as the fall swing gets underway. Producer PJ joins for a quick look at this week's Champions Tour event before Brendan and Andy wrap up this episode with the news of meetings between the PGA Tour and the Saudi PIF taking place this week in New York. Check back Thursday for coverage of this week's Solheim Cup and more as fall golf begins to hit its stride.

The two discuss the history of the Irish Open and how the tournament could increase its stature in the game in the future before discussing the golf course. Andy and Darragh go back-and-forth about this week's venue, detailing what makes Royal County Down so special. They break down the sand dunes running through the front nine of the course, the benefit of the nature and land that the course is located on, and the novelty of playing on top of dunes at Royal County Down as opposed to other courses. To wrap things up, Andy and Darragh talk through their favorite holes that the pros will play this week.
Northern Ireland was a different place when Scotsman Kevan Whitson took the Royal County Down head professional job in 1992. The country was still enmeshed in the Troubles, golf travel hadn't yet boomed, and the club saw 1,500 visitor rounds a year. But Old Tom's layout at this low-key members' club strung along the Irish Sea has always been world-class, and RCD now rightfully claims its place as perhaps the greatest links in the world, as well as a fixture on every golfer's bucket list. Host Tom Coyne sat down with Whitson to walk through the changes he's overseen in his 30 years at the club, the balancing act between providing an elite visitor experience and serving the club's membership, and his memories of hosting everyone from Jack and Arnie to Rory and Rickie. Plus, Whitson offers a few points of advice for anyone gearing up to take on the 2024 Irish Open host venue, and lays out how Royal County Down may just be golf's answer to Emily Post, with every hole teaching players to mind their manners. All four Fried Egg Golf staffers return for this episode on their impressions of Royal Portrush after a few days playing, walking, and filming its Dunluce Links, Northern Ireland's Open Championship host and perhaps its most renowned course. They debate some of the characteristics that make it so great, changes undergone by Martin Ebert to accommodate The Open, and favorite holes. They also relay a few of their own unique experiences trying to navigate the course, what to look for as you go around, and take on the age-old debate of how you'd split 10 rounds between Royal Portrush and Royal County Down.
In this episode of Eggsplorations, the greatest golfer in the history of Northern Ireland joins to discuss his roots there, his favorite golf memories growing up, and his favorite courses and earliest memories of Royal Portrush and Royal County Down. Rory McIlroy fields questions from TPC Sawgrass as he prepped for The Players while Andy and Brendan were across the Atlantic in his home country acquainting themselves with the golf culture and a few of the world class courses that Rory came to know in his earliest days as a junior standout. He also explains this golden age of pro golf success for the island, which boasts five different major winners since 2007 after a 60-year drought. There's also plenty of banter and insight into what it was like growing up at Holywood, how different it is now as a big shot on the PGA Tour, and much more. Thanks to Rory for his time.
Beware of the abrupt start to this podcast with some cross debate over who is responsible for an extra pint putting some of the traveling band in rough shape. But then it gets lively in this edition of Eggsplorations, where Andy, Cameron, and Brendan discuss the Annesley Links, aka the “wee course” at Royal County Down. It's a sub-5000 yard layout on similar dunesland adjacent to the “big” course. They recount their day, discuss some favorite holes, ponder whether its status is hurt or helped by being so close to the main show next door, and crown it the greatest short course in the world.
The first day of Fried Egg Golf's Eggsplorations trip to Northern Ireland did not start with a whimper, but rather with 27 holes at a course sometimes ranked as the best in the world. Regardless of whatever number ranking you might assign it, Royal County Down is a true stunner that will stick in your heart and mind long after you've visited. Andy, Brendan, Cameron, and Matt discuss some of their initial impressions, favorite features, and favorite holes (quite hard to choose). There will be much, much more on RCD in written, visual, and audio form from this trip but it demanded an initial review. Unlike many of the possible “best courses in the world,” Royal County Down can be played with a bit of planning and commitment if you're not a member. Visit Ireland.com/golf for more on initiating that process to get over for some of the best golf you can find anywhere in the world.

Vincent Norrman won once again, so Matt Chivers and Matt Coles discuss the sudden rise in Scandinavian golf and how so many superstars in the sport are emerging from this part of the world. Whether this could be the case or not, Irish fans will turn out for their national event, and the team talks about why the Irish Open is so popular on tour. Should the Irish Open stay on links turf and visit the country's most famous courses more often, such as when Royal County Down hosts the tournament in 2024? The team looks back on the USA's recent visit to Marco Simone, some funny pictures on social media and a nostalgic choice of shirt from Jim Furyk. A couple of Team USA members tee it up at the Fortinet Championship this week while the entire European side heads to Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship. The team looks forward to this event, and looks back on the dramatic and extraordinary BMW PGA Championship from 2022, as well as Charley Hull's unfortunate defeat to Minjee Lee at the weekend on the LPGA Tour! You know what to do...

Professor Paul Rouse from University College Dublin joins us on this episode to trace the origin story of Irish golf. Commentators often erroneously pair the games' development in Ireland to that of Scotland - in this episode we explore how its' development in Ireland has more commonalities with the development trajectory in England than that exhibited in Bonnie Scotland. From Elias de Butts documented efforts in 1762 on common land in Bray, Co. Wicklow, to the Scottish/Military influence through the Curragh Camp in Kildare, the Royal Clubs of Belfast, Dublin, Down and Portrush and onwards to the real golf boom in the late 1890's and onwards into the next few decades. How the Great War, 1916 Rising and the Irish civil war changed Ireland and its' golf clubs forever, not to mention the more recent new club boom and the democratisation of golf that accompanied the rise and subsequent economic fall of the Celtic Tiger, Floridian resort golf 'Irish Style', the Ryder Cup and where the game goes from here. Many thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the show! Special Guest: Professor Paul Rouse.

The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition. In this episode we are joined by golf journalist and consultant Adam Lawrence. Despite attending the same school as Dr Alistair MacKenzie, Adam is currently writing a biograpahy on Harry Shapland Colt, the father of modern golf course architecture. We explore Colt's early golfing days at Cambridge and his early influences, R&A membership and the formation of the Oxford & Cambridge Golf Society. We then take a look at some of Colts' designs at Rye, Sunningdale, St. Andrews, Swinley Forest, St Georges Hill, Rosapenna, Royal Dublin, Royal County Down, County Sligo, Royal Portrush and Royal Liverpool. We also consider how Colt's style evolved through time and what sort of legacy has he left to the game. If you follow us on social media or even listened to past episodes, you know that the 2022 Ireland trip was highly anticipated. Now, it's over. We bring you this episode as a Pepe x Bash banter sesh and call in three of our buddies who were on the trip. We talk golf, travel, and what it was like playing across the pond. Our lineup of courses we played is Portstewart, Portrush, Royal County Down, Ardglass, The Island, and Portmarnock. If you haven't been, you better go.We open up the episode and phone in our first guest, Brandon Katzeff, aka BKatz. We take his perspective on the trip and hear his thoughts. We ask what his most ‘miserable' moment in Ireland was..because, let's be honest, sometimes the course will get the best of ya. We then phone in our second ‘guest,' Brian John, aka Bimmer. Bimmer carries a smile wherever he goes. Fortunately, his smile and positive attitude helped to carry him through the links. We hear Bimmer's take on Ireland, and his excitement can't be missed. Bouncing like a kangaroo, everyone's weekend golf group needs a Bimmer! We wrap up the episode with our grand finale, Mr. Ian Patrick Archer, aka IPA! Ian is known for his social media game where he shares every and any bit of content he can capture. If you followed along, he conducted caddie interviews, swing shots, and other content from the trip. Aside from IP's motion sickness, his trip across the pond was a clean one, and if you don't know IP, you need to. As always, we thank you for listening to our podcast and specifically this episode! In Part 2 of this podcast about the greatest buddies trip happening in and around the playing of the 150th Open Championship, the Manning brothers, Eric Church and several others continue their romp around the linksland of the UK, immersing themselves in the culture and traditions at some of the best golf courses in the world. From North Berwick to Gullane, Muirfield and Royal County Down, Eli Manning shares his wine and gets heat for ordering fish, Cooper Manning gets out of the robe but gets in red knee-high socks after Muirfield's “proper” lunch, and a jet-lagged Eric Church is inspired to write a song, which he's kind enough to share with us at the end of the adventure. More insider info, course reviews and reflections throughout this oral history of a trip that was a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for a special group of friends.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our first instalment from 'Course Diaries' in 2022 comes from Royal County Down where Sam & Tom catch up with Dr Brian Fleming, one of the clubs' archivists and a long standing member who knows the evolution of the club and the course itself better than most. It's a fascinating story including the history behind many of the traditions that are still kept today.
Tom & Sam wax lyrical about their trip to Northern Ireland. Starting with Royal County Down, a visit to Royal Portrush, and two cracking 9 hole course - Bushfoot & The Bann course at Castlerock… it was a great trip and a great insight into what Ireland in general has to offer. Joining me is an old friend and former Glamorgan team mate Llewellyn Matthews from Southerndown Golf Club (Wales, UK). Llew is regarded as one of Wales' greatest ever Amateur Golfers, having won the Welsh Amateur title back to back in 2006 and again in 2007, the first player to achieve this since the legendary JR Jones (Langland Bay) in the mid 1980s. He tells me how he quickly rose through the ranks at Southerndown Golf Club where there was a large & highly competitive junior section. He learnt from the senior mentors around him and leveraged rivalries with fellow juniors, playing up to 54 holes a day. Llewellyn really got into his Tournament Golf career at the famous “Duncan Putter” Tournament, held annually at his home club Southerndown GC, aged 16, being fortunate to watch many great GB & I Walker Cup players such as Simon Dyson and Gary Wolstenholme MBE. Southerndown is a superb links Golf Course in South Wales (UK), laid out in 1905 and then redesigned in 1918 by the famous course designer Harry Shapland Colt. His job was to make it play easier! https://www.southerndowngolfclub.com/…/course-history-colts… Late in 2005, Llewellyn won his first professional tournament as an amateur, at a local event at St. Pierre golf club, winning by a remarkable 7 shots. Llewellyn would then rise to prominence on the World Stage by winning the qualifying at the 2006 British Amateur at Royal St George's and reaching the final 16 after beating Richie Ramsay in the first round (Richie went on to win the US Amateur that year). Later that summer, he narrowly edged his good friend Rhys Davies on the 36th green around Pyle and Kenfig to take his first Welsh Amateur title. Llewellyn won the 2007 St. Andrews Links Trophy, sealing his biggest tournament win, smashing the tournament record with a total of 273, -15 under over 4 rounds and setting his sights on British Open qualification. On arrival at Monifieth, he discovered 200 players going for 3 spots but he seized his chance to grab 1 of the spots at the 136th Open Championship where Padraig Harrington would go on to win his first major, after beating Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Llewellyn enjoyed a practice round with US Open Champion Angel Cabrera. He was then drawn with future World Number One Luke Donald and Charles Howell III. After winning his second Welsh Amateur title in 2007, he earnt a highly coveted spot on the 41st Walker Cup Team, held at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. The 2007 Walker Cup Team on both sides would go down in retrospect as perhaps the strongest sides of all time, featuring players such as Rory Mc Ilroy, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Ricky Fowler and Danny Willet. “A lot of people tell me that I have the “dream job.” My response to them is that you chose what you want to do in life…and I chose to do this.” Evan Schiller (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Evan_Headshot.jpg) Evan Schiller Photography Weston, Connecticut If there is such a thing as an “accidental career,” or a career path that’s discovered, rather than initially pursued…then that may describe the story you’re about to hear from Evan Schiller – who over the last twenty years has established himself as one of the premier golf course photographers in the world. Evan started out with a love for the game of golf, and during the first part of his career, as a PGA Golf Professional, he gained a first-hand understanding of every aspect of the game…as a club professional and in tournament play. And during that period, he discovered two things that shaped the future direction of his life. First, Evan discovered that he possessed an artist’s eye for nature’s beauty…and more specifically, he saw the beauty of the golf courses he was playing on. Secondly, Evan discovered that he could make a living by capturing with a camera the beauty that he witnessed. So with no formal training, a simple Minolta camera, and a whole lot of courage, Evan followed his passion to begin what has become a highly successful business and rewarding career. Shooting from the ground, lifts, helicopters, and now drones, Evan brings a fresh perspective to each project he undertakes. He thoughtfully scouts out each golf course he photographs with the goal of capturing its unique features and nuances under optimal lighting conditions possible, which can mean being in the right spot at the right time, waiting for the sun to rise, or the sun to set…and hoping that something unexpected won’t spoil the shot. Evan has photographed hundreds of championship courses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Japan. He has captured and left his own distinctive mark on some of the most recognized tracks around the world including Pebble Beach Golf Links, Augusta National Golf Club, Medinah Country Club, The Old Course at St. Andrews, Royal County Down and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Evan’s work is published in numerous national and international magazines, books and calendars, including The Masters Journal, The US Open Magazine, The Ryder Cup Journal, LINKS Magazine, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golf Course Architecture. Evan’s photography is exclusively featured in his two highly acclaimed books, Golf Courses of Hawaii and Golf’s Unfolding Drama. In addition, Evan continues to publish his own award-winning Golfshots calendar (https://www.golfshots.com/store.html) . Show Highlights: The role Evan’s father played in his taking up the game, and in becoming a pro golfer What was the catalyst that sparked his interest in becoming a professional photographer The key factors that influenced Evan’s decision to change his career path How Evan balances his different roles as an artist and a business owner The competitive landscape for golf course photography The growing importance of video and drones in golf course photography How and why weather is such a big factor in the profitability of an assignment Why Evan thinks that the word “retire” is weird Guidance for parents on how they should (and should not) guide their kid’s career choice Evan’s theory on why games like golf were created…and what’s gone wrong with games Notable Quotes: On his career change from PGA Professional: “I got a lot of criticism, but I chose to do it because I really liked it. I thought, “What’s the worst thing that can happen? If it doesn’t work out, I can do something else.” You can always find a way.” On his source of personal...
