When Howard Purdy and Bob Hodgson chalked out the frame for the Purdy Deuce on the floor of his parent's home in 1964, little did they know that the car would be one of the dominant cars to compete at the famed Oswego Speedway from the mid 1960's thru 1974…as well as ultimately become one of the most iconic supermodifieds in the history of the sport. The car debuted late in the 1964 season but was plagued by “new car” issues. The 1965 season however was a revelation as driver, Ron Lux, won 5 features in a row and 12 of the 16 races held, easily winning the track title. In several of those wins, Lux used an alias as he was afraid of losing his USAC sprint car license. That year, the car also made its first – and only – race ever on dirt, racing in the National Open at the Williams Grove Speedway. Lux was running 5 th when he hit a rut and spun out. Sadly, Lux was fatally injured in a sprint car crash in July 1966 in Tulsa. The winter before he died, Lux had suggested a young, New England driver, Bentley Warren as a candidate for the ride. Purdy wanted a more experienced driver, but after trying several veterans with no success, he put Warren in the car. Warren drove the car from 1966 – 1969, winning 7 features in that span, including the 1969 International Classic, the biggest race of the year. Canadian Warren Coniam was behind the wheel in '70 and '71 winning 2 features and the final driver was the late Jimmy Winks, who won 5 features including the car's final race in 1974. Small block and big block injected Chevy motors have powered the car over the years. The current restoration carries a 1960's small block Chevy. In its time at Oswego The Deuce racked up 25 wins – 11 seconds – 5 thirds with 1 track championship and 1 win in the International Classic. The car was competitive throughout the eras of upright supers, the sleeker, Indy roadster style bodies, and even when rear engine supers were running. Robert MacIntyre birdies the final hole to become just the second native player to win the Scottish Open. Correspondent Graeme Agars reports.
Recorded June 8, 2024 at the National Open in Las Vegas Chess Books Recaptured returns to revisit an old book which now has a modern twist. My System by Aron Nimzowitsch is one of the best-selling and most recommended chess books of all time, but the original version has not aged well in some respects. In Book Recap #18, IM Christof Sielecki and I highlighted some of the classic book's shortcomings as viewed through a modern lens. Luckily, GM Alex Fishbein decided to update the book for a 21st century audience. The result is My System: Fast Track Edition, from Russell Enterprises (also available via Forward Chess). During my recent trip to the National Open in Las Vegas, Alex joined me to discuss My System's legacy, his personal history with the book, and why he decided that the chess world needed a better version. Following our chat, Alex took some questions from the audience, and briefly shared his thoughts on my book, Perpetual Chess Improvement. Timestamps of topics discussed are below. This summer marks the 25th anniversary of Payne Stewart's triumph at Pinehurst in the 1999 U.S. Open, and as fate would have it, the National Open is back in at no. 2. This week the Adult Improver Series returns with an extremely insightful guest. Dan Bock is a North Carolina-based software engineer and dad, who finally got serious about chess improvement in 2021. At this time, Dan began to compete frequently, utilize digital flashcards, and make a conscious effort to make friends in the chess world in order to help make his hobby more fulfilling. Dan's results have been rare and inspiring, as he has seen USCF rating rise from the high 1500s to the high 1900s (USCF) in the last 3 years. As Dan explains, while he is very directed in his decisions of how to approach chess study, he does not put in outlandish an number of hours of study per day. He is very focused on what actually decides the outcomes of his own games, and has made constant progress by keeping that as his North Star. I find Dan's story very inspiring and am excited to see his continued progress! Recently the FTC and FMCSA announced new rules that would adversely affect the Towing Industry and those who supply and support the industry. Luckily, a large group of towers from around the nation worked tirelessly to create a new Coalition not only to fight against these new proposed rules but to combat the negative stereotypes and misunderstanding of the costs and challenges we face while trying to keep America's roads and commerce flowing. NOCSHC isn't simply talking about doing something about it, they are doing something about it. They already have D.C. lobbyists and two D.C. law firms who specialize in the FTC Rulemaking process on the ground and digging in. The deputy leader of the opposition, Nicola Willis, has hit back at accusations from Prime Minister Chris Hipkins that National was dog-whistling in its criticism of bilingual road signs. On Friday, National's transport spokesperson Simeon Brown said the party did not support having road signs in both te reo Maori and English, saying it would be confusing for drivers. Since then National has walked back on its opposition. Nicola Willis clarified her party's stance on First Up this morning, saying National is open to concept of bilingual signage but has empathy with those New Zealanders who have anxiety about them.

Host Carl Lewis and golf punter Wade Pretorius preview the Hero World Challenge & SA Open Championship with Wade providing his best bets for both tournaments this weekend. SA Open Dating all the way back to 1893, the South African Open is the second oldest National Open in the world, with only the Open Championship, which was first staged back to 1860, dating back further. The South African Open has been co-sanctioned between the Sunshine and DP World Tour since 1997. Last year's edition was also scheduled to be a co-sanctioned event but due to COVID-19 travel restrictions in place in the UK from South Africa the majority of DP World Tour players withdrew and the event was revised as a sole-sanctioned Sunshine Tour event. Dean Burmester's very decent recent form figures in his homeland, reading 4-2-1-43-4-2-18-2, include his two fourths in the last two editions of this event and he's been in reasonable form this year with an 11th placed finish in the Open Championship and a fourth in the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour the highlights. His prestigious length off the tee should be an asset this week but his very recent form is a bit disappointing, reading 37-32-MC-54, and I'm happy to swerve him. Branden Grace, who won the first of the two editions staged in 2020, has been plying his trade on the LIV Tour of late and to some success too. Grace won the LIV Golf Invitational Portland in July and after a quiet spell he finished inside the top-ten at the Nedbank Challenge last time out in what was his first appearance in his homeland since he won this title almost three years ago. Charl Schwartzel also plays on the LIV Tour now he too has tasted success, winning the first event staged there - the LIV Golf Invitational London in June. Schwartzel is still looking to win his national title for the first time but he hasn't played in the last couple of editions of the event either so taking the title can hardly be described as a burning desire. World Hero Challenge The PGA TOUR pops back into the frame to squeeze in one more event before the new year. This week's field is capped at just 20 golfers who are guaranteed four rounds of action and at least a couple OWGR points for their effort. Last year's winner, Viktor Hovland, scooped up 48 OWGR points last year while last-place finisher, Jordan Spieth, grabbed 2.4 points for his showing. The Course The host venue this week is Albany, an Ernie Els design that was established in 2010. Albany is unique as a desert-links style setup that almost looks like a video game creation. The scorecard shows a par 72 that stretches out past 7,400 yards. The course is unique in the hole-by-hole layout as there are five par 3s and five par 5s. It's a good balance as the abundance of par 3s puts an emphasis on smart and steady iron play while the par 5s often reward the elite drivers. On top of that, a pair of driveable par 4s also put a premium on controlling your metals/woods. Off the tee, golfers will see generous landing areas but plenty of sand and other trouble (bushes) waiting to gobble up errant tee balls. Water is in play on five holes. For turf, this coastal course features wall-to-wall bermudagrass that can be very tricky at times, particularly around the greens. Looking at the scoring environment, the weather dictates how low they can go at Albany. Bubba Watson won the 2015 edition at 25-under but the other five Albany champs have finished at 18-under or 20-under. That's probably tougher than you might expect for a resort course with five par 5s but that goes to show how the plethora of par 3s and a few tough par 4s help offer a good scoring balance.

This week on the FAIR Data Podcast, Rory Macneil shares experiences and insights from the Netherlands National Open Science Festival, which took place on 1st September 2022, at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn and connect in community led workshops and sessions, and the Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture and Science visited the Festival to join the conversation about different aspects of Open Science, and to hand over five Open Science Awards to five inspiring Use Cases with a focus on societal engagement. Women in Baseball Week and National Tequila Day coincide and it looks just like the NCiB Venn diagram. Pottymouth gives us the historical perspective of the record-setting game between the Blue Jays and that other team and manages to celebrate our boyfriend's fine showing. Except for the one, which may get re-dumped. Soto Watch includes the Nats steep asking price, and air travel trash talk. We are seriously bad at pre-season predictions and prove it at this mid-season check-in. A tearful Pottymouth recounts the Hall of Fame induction of Big Papi, and those other honorees that don't make her cry. Patti's Eat the Rich rant exposes the crassness of Commissioner Rob Manfred “rejecting the premise” that minor league players do not earn a living wage. In a nutshell, Manfred earns the average AAA annual salary in approximately two hours. Women in Baseball week is being celebrated in all the right ways. Baseball for All nationals hosted 450 girl ballplayers, support from major league teams, a new Shirley Burkovich Hustle Award, and a preview of the new League of Her Own series that Maybelle Blair says tells the real story. The Women's National Open proceeded right into the national team tryouts and we have our fingers crossed for a local favorite. We say “I've got Pottymouth and tequila so I'll get through this,” “I'm just going to take one little sip of tequila here,” “I've only finished half, oh no, two-thirds, of my tequila.”Get boosted, fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. For the second straight week, the Flag Hunting boys are Cashing Tickets!! Rory McIlroy gets it done in Canada at 14-1 to give the boys their sixth golf outright of the PGA Tour season, and their 10th overall between their two sports! But Rory's performance is very much a footnote of the golfing world, and of this shows focus this week, as our Major Correspondent Derek (@Picks_By_Blaze) on Twitter is back in studio to discuss the third Major Championship of 2022 in Brookline, Massachusetts! Ian and Derek start by giving their thoughts on The Country Club, and the setup we anticipate from the USGA, before diving headfirst into this star-studded field with a full breakdown of everyone at the top of the betting board! The boys have plenty of hot takes and bullets to fire in this 122nd rendition of the United States' National Open. Special thanks to our friend Derek for taking the time to come on and talk shop with us. He puts on a hell of a product in his own right every single week on Twitter. If you have any interest in NASCAR betting, be sure to give him a follow (@Picks_By_Blaze), and tune into his weekly Twitter Space live every Wednesday night! When wrestlers, coaches, media and fans gather to talk about the G.O.A.T. at Lehigh University, the conversation always includes Mark Lieberman. Combining all styles, he is considered the Mountain Hawks' greatest overall wrestler. A 1979 Sports Illustrated article described Mark as “the guttiest and the best” college wrestler that year. He was a two-time undefeated NCAA champion at 177 pounds in 1978 and 1979 after a runner-up finish in 1977 at 167. He is part of another special wrestling family with his brother, Mike, winning the NCAA championship for Lehigh in 1975 at 177 pounds. Mark was the first four-time EIWA champion in school history, pinning a tournament record 12 of 16 opponents. In his senior year, he swept the EIWA's major awards, winning the Outstanding Wrestler Trophy, the Sheridan Trophy for most falls and the Fletcher Award for scoring the most team points in his career. He still holds Lehigh records for season falls (16), career falls (43) and most bonus points in a season (95.2% of his matches in 1979). Wrestling for the New York Athletic Club, he was an AAU national champion in 1977 and won the U.S. Wrestling Federation national championship in 1978, 1979 and 1980. Lieberman won a gold medal at the World Cup in 1978 and a silver medal in 1979. He won the Pan Am Wrestling Championships in 1977. He pinned his idol, 1976 Olympic gold medalist and Distinguished Member John Peterson, in the finals of the National Open in 1978 to earn the Outstanding Wrestler Award, the Most Falls Award, the U.S. Wrestling Federation Grand Champion Award and 1978 Athlete of the Year. He also defeated Distinguished Members Wade Schalles, Chris Campbell and Ed Banach in freestyle competition. The 1980 Olympic boycott cost him a chance at an Olympic medal. Helping launch the Blair Academy (New Jersey) freestyle program, he won the AAU Junior World national championship in 1974 and 1975 and was the U.S. Wrestling Federation Junior national champion in 1973. Three times Lieberman won the National Independent Schools championship (National Preps) from 1972-1974 and was outstanding wrestler twice. Mark was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches' Hall of Fame in 1987, the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994, the EIWA Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Blair Academy Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. For the May edition of One Move at a Time, US Chess Senior Director of Strategic Communication Dan Lucas sits down with GM John Fedorowicz. From his 2009 US Chess Hall of Fame induction plaque: "Inspired to begin playing chess by the Fischer-Spassky World Championship match in 1972, "The Fed" won the National High School Championship in 1975, tied for the U.S. Junior Championship in 1977, and won the competition outright in 1978. Both before and after attaining the GM title in 1986, Fedorowicz was considered a force in American chess, taking the U.S. Open in 1980, the New York Open in 1989, the National Open in 1992, and qualifying for the U.S. Championship numerous times. He is also the winner of five World Open titles and has many international victories to his credit, including Cannes and Sesimbra in 1987 and Wijk aan Zee in 1990. "Fedorowicz twice represented the U.S. in the World Chess Olympiad and captained both men's and women's Olympiad teams. He also has authored numerous chess articles and two books, The Complete Benko Gambit in 1990 and The English Attack, with Nick de Firmian, in 2004. On this date in 1930, the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered. Here are some things you may not have known about what was once considered the ninth planet in the solar system. Although it wasn’t discovered until 1930, astronomers had predicted in the late 19th century that something besides the newly discovered Neptune was disturbing the orbit of the seventh planet, Uranus. Between 1909 and 1930, there were 16 prediscovery observations of Pluto in which the observer didn’t realize what was there. Clyde Tombaugh, a 23-year-old astronomer was hired by the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, to lead the effort to find what was called “Planet X.” He did this by comparing photographs of the night sky and looking for any undiscovered moving objects. On Feb. 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered a moving object in pictures taken on January 23rd and 29th. Other photos confirmed the movement and the discovery was telegraphed to the Harvard Observatory on March 13. The name Pluto was chosen from more than 1,000 suggestions. Pluto, after the mythological god of the underworld, was joined on the final short list of candidates by the names Minerva, after the goddess of wisdom, and Cronus, the son of Uranus and father of Zeus. The name Pluto was suggested by 11-year-old Venitia Burney, who had taken an interest in classical mythology. After its discovery, Pluto was almost immediately seen as a disappointment. It was much smaller than it should have been. If it were the predicted Planet X, it should have been about seven times larger than Earth. In fact, at the time it was estimated to have a diameter of about 60 percent of that of the Earth. It also had an very elliptical orbit and was less reflective than anticipated. It was also determined that Pluto’s orbit takes it inside that of Neptune periodically. A stable orbital ratio means that the two bodies will never collide. Almost immediately, Pluto’s status as a planet was called into question. The dimness and eccentric orbit were seen to be more like those of a comet or asteroid. A year later, other astronomers proposed that the new planet was not the cause of the orbital irregularities of Uranus, and that the discovery of Pluto was an accident. Though the years, estimations of Pluto’s size were revised downward. In 1948, it was believed to be 1/10 the size of the Earth. In 1976, the estimate was down to 1/100th. The 1978 discovery of its moon, Charon, further lowered the estimate to about 1/500th. The most recent estimate puts Pluto at 1/459th the size of Earth. In 1992, new information from Voyager 2’s flyby of Neptune allowed for more precise calculations of Neptune’s effect on the orbit of Uranus, eliminating the need for a Planet X to explain any irregularity. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union created an official definition of the term “planet.” Pluto meets the first two conditions, which are orbiting the Sun and being massive enough to have its own gravity. It doesn’t meet the third condition of clearing its orbital neighborhood of other objects. Instead of being classified as the ninth planet, Pluto is considered the largest and second most massive dwarf planet in the solar system. Our question: Which came first, the discovery of the dwarf planet Pluto, or the naming of Disney character Pluto? Today is the anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, and it’s National Elephant Day in Thailand. It’s unofficially National Workplace Napping Day, National Jewel Day, and National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. It’s the birthday of actor William H. Macy, who is 67; U2 bassist Adam Clayton, who is 57; and skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who is 22. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1999, the top song in the U.S. was “Believe” by Cher. The No. 1 movie was “Analyze This,” while the novel “The Testament” by John Grisham topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Weekly question: Pluto was originally the pet dog of which Disney character? Submit your answer at triviapeople.com/test and we’ll add the name of the person with the first correct answer to our winner’s wall … at triviapeople.com. Episode 5 of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's LEGENDS podcast features 2015 Distinguished Member Joe Gonzales. The goal of wrestling is to take an opponent off his feet and place him on the mat. Perhaps no wrestler in collegiate wrestling has done it better—or more often—than Joe Gonzales. Gonzales perfected the takedown during his time as a 118-pound wrestler at California State-Bakersfield. His 1980 wrestling season ranks among the finest in collegiate wrestling history. Gonzales’ 55-0 record is the national record for the most wins in a single season with no defeats and no ties. He notched 448 takedowns that year too, also a national record. During his career, CSU Bakersfield was a Division II program, so Gonzales had a unique opportunity to win championships in two different divisions. He won the Division II NCAA tournament on March 1, 1980, with a 28-11 win in the championship finals. Then, just two weeks later, he won the Division I NCAA tourney, scoring 16 points or more in four of the six matches he won during his championship run. His junior season was almost as successful. Gonzales went 44-1 during the 1979 season, winning a Division II championship with a 22-14 win in the finals. He entered the Division I NCAA tournament as the top seed, but dropped a thrilling 16-13 decision to Gene Mills of Syracuse in the finals. Many consider their exhilarating showdown as the most entertaining collegiate match ever. Gonzales also earned a California Junior College state title for East Los Angeles College. Gonzales carried his collegiate success into international competition. He was a five-time National Open freestyle wrestling champion at 114.5 pounds, winning titles in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, and 1988. “Gonzo” was also a five-time U.S. World Team member, a three-time World Cup champion, a bronze medalist at the 1982 World Championships, and champion at the 1982 Tbilisi tournament—considered by many as the toughest tournament in the world. He was a member of the 1984 Olympic freestyle team as well. After college, Gonzales served as an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State from 1986-1989. The Sun Devils won the Pac-10 tournament all four seasons he was with the program, and they were crowned NCAA tournament champions in 1988. In recognition of a record-setting wrestling career, Joe Gonzales is recognized as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Rob Report Welcome to another week of Wheelz-Up Radio. Your #1 Choice for Sportsman Drag Racing. This week on Wheelz-Up Radio presented by Sassy Race Engines we join host Chris Barnes, Tri-State Stock/SS President Mike Carr and Lew "Wagon Master" Silverman. On this week's show the gang will talk with Karl Fredrickson of Speedway Illustrated. Karl will talk about the ever popular topic of safety in racing. This week's interview is with Karl Fredrickson, Editor of Dick Berggren’s Speedway Illustrated Magazine. Karl developed his love of racing when a friend took him to a race at Hudson Speedway in New Hampshire. It was a life changing event for him, and he was hooked instantly. When he turned sixteen he started begging everyone he knew, except his parents, to take him to the speedway to go racing. Eventually he broke down and had to tell his parents what he had been doing every weekend, and surprisingly they were supportive and let him work on his race car at home. His dad told him that he knew people in the business and to contact Doug Gore. This connection led to a job at Stock Car Racing Magazine and twenty two years later he is still working with approximately the same group of people. Karl will talk about the hot topic of safety in auto racing along with a few other things. Wheelz-Up Radio presented by Sassy Race Engines fires the engines beginning at 7:30pm on Wednesday Night.
