Ryan Fox must be wondering when the luck of the Irish will fall his way after finishing just short at the Irish Open for the third time of his career. Fox, playing in his first tournament since the PGA Tour's 3M Open in July, held a share of the lead midway through the fourth round but dropped a shot on the penultimate hole to end his chance of another victory on the DP World Tour. Fox carded a final round 70 at the K Club to finish two shots (12-under) behind Swede Vincent Norrman at 14-under in a share of third. Norrman had the low round of the day with 65 to win his second tournament of the year. The Kiwi finished runner-up last year behind Adrian Meronk and also in 2018, edged out by Russell Knox. This year he shared third with Grant Forrest (Scotland), Shane Lowry (Ireland), Triston Lawrence (South Africa) and Hurly Long (Germany). Fox earns $315,000 (NZD$535,000) for his third placed finish. He missed a birdie chance at the 16th which would have tied the lead, but the ball held up just short of the hole. An errant drive on the par four 17th left him with a tough approach and he clipped a tree leaving his ball well short of the green. He recovered well to land his third on the edge of the green but his par attempt finished short. Needing an eagle on the par five 18th, Fox's drive landed in the rough ending any hope of a playoff. Fellow Kiwi Daniel Hillier finished in a share of 13th at 10-under following a final round 69. Next week is the lucrative BMW Championship at Wentworth. It has been another busy week for sport in the Highlands, not least because of the announcement that the Scottish Cup will be back later this month! With seven Highland League teams left in the draw, Will and Andrew look at how likely it is those sides will actually return to action for the competition, and what the fate of the league itself is likely to be. After a dubious penalty decision cost Ross County a result away at St Mirren last time out, there is also discussion over whether VAR would be a good thing for Scottish football, whether Caley Thistle are in a relegation battle, and why ICT Women are unlikely to return any time soon. Two of the Highlands' brightest products in rugby have also been in the news, while finally golfer Russell Knox had some kind words to say about his former home course. Get in touch with the show on Twitter @Balls_Whistles or by emailing ballsandwhistles@hnmedia.co.uk, and thanks as always go to Forest Fires for use of their song Scared of the Dark as our theme.
We start off with the GolfRules Question of the Week answer for Episode 28 Are you permitted to use rock-paper-scissors as a legitimate way of determining who plays next in a match, if you are unable to determine who is furthest from the hole? Yes, rock-paper-scissors is a random method that can be used. Other random methods can also be used, like a coin toss, or you could throw an iron in the air and see which side up it lands - face or back. Alternatively you could just agree for one player to play. Blakey had an interesting story when he was called in as a referee for the Charley Hoffman vs Brendan Steele match at the Dell Matchplay in 2018. We were inundated with Rule 9.4 rulings this week at the AT&T PGA Tour event at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill golf courses. Firstly during Round 3 - Maverick McNealy https://youtu.be/iZ_eKA2SFWs And then on the first hole during Round 4 - Russell Knox https://youtu.be/yM4DmT7K-wk Both players were penalised one stroke, although the exact same ruling wasn’t given by the referees at the time. Russell’s was handed to him after playing the 4th hole. We cleared up an email question from Jwonghen, and encourage everyone to send in emails for questions they want to know the answer to. If the lie of your ball is altered, are you permitted to place the ball closer to the hole? And if your ball won’t come to rest after you place/replace it, how far away can you then move your ball to get it to stay at rest? Say it was on a steep slope. Rossco and Blakey reminisce on the 25th anniversary of the famous golf movie - Happy Gilmore. It certainly has brought golf shops a lot of business from those who try to replicate the famous swing - including Blakey. Blakey has created the video scenarios, and has promised a re-release, and a whole podcast episode dedicated to Happy Gilmore imbroglios. The Background Bingo’s were discussed with Andrew Millar back on top of the podium, guessing both Spyglass Hill, and Craigielaw golf courses. This week will be a little trickier for all punters, but both are in Australia. GRQotW 29 Question Are you permitted to watch a video on YouTube (say George Gankas or Me&My Golf) during a round to obtain swing tips? Another week, another rules controversy. This time, Scotland's Russell Knox found himself penalised after a bizarre episode during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. All of which begs the question: are the laws of the game potentially damaging the sport? Michael and Bryce discuss on this week's episode of The bunkered Podcast. Elsewhere, two-time Ladies European Tour winner Meghan MacLaren joins us to talk about her high hopes for 2021, taking on Twitter trolls, and being a fully paid-up member of the Toon Army. Plus, what would you rather win: the US PGA four times or the Masters once?
