The AtlanTec Festival 2025 is officially underway, celebrating innovation and technology in the west of Ireland. With a strong focus on AI and cybersecurity, the AtlanTec Festival Conference at the University of Galway will take place on Thursday, May 29th, and is set to attract over 400 delegates, including international speakers and representatives from leading technology companies. Now in its 11th year, the festival is led by the non-profit association itag (Innovation Technology AtlanTec Gateway) with the support of its sponsors, members and the technology community. This year the packed programme of events - spanning more than two weeks - centres on the theme of 'Shaping the Future of Technology Innovation'. Conference speakers, Johnathan McCrea of Whipsmart Media and Newstalk, Bronagh Riordan of EY, and Dr Bairbre McNicholas, Senior Lecturer at the University of Galway and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Galway University Hospitals, will discuss the role of AI and cybersecurity in their work. Short-form talks and use cases - ways in which a user interacts with a system or product, will follow from Fidelity, Cisco, Datavant, Accenture and CURIOSS. AI conference sessions will be led by Professor Michael Madden from the School of Computer Science at University of Galway and will feature a keynote from Gary Short of Darach AI, an AI/Machine Learning modelling company that allows you to make better business decisions by predicting the future. Cybersecurity conference sessions will be led by Seán Morris of Galway-based cybersecurity company TitanHQ and will feature keynotes from Mark Power of Immersive Labs, a company helping the world's largest organisations to be ready for the future of cyber threats, and Dr Mamoona Asghar from the School of Computer Science. Professor Lokesh Joshi, Vice-President for Research and Innovation at the University of Galway, said: "The festival enriches our collective expertise and allows us to engage with the vibrant technology community in our region, sparking valuable new connections. In addition, it highlights the West of Ireland as a major hub for excellence in innovation, technology, data and AI." Caroline Cawley, CEO of itag, said: "Now celebrating its 11th year, AtlanTec continues to drive innovation, fostering collaboration that advances the technology sector across the region. It is more than just a festival - it builds community by connecting professionals, businesses, and visionaries, significantly enhancing talent development throughout the region." During the conference, the recent winners of the AtlanTec AI Challenge hackathon will present their AI-driven solution to challenges in the healthcare domain. It aims to create AI solutions to address real-world challenges. The two-week festival is anticipated to attract over 1,000 delegates from regional and national technology companies across Ireland. It serves as a platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and exploring collaborative opportunities between academia and industry. The conference is brought to campus by the University of Galway Innovation Office, which is supported under the KT Boost Programme co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the Northern and Western Regional Programme 2021-2027. With Australia's residential vacancy rate at a record low and net overseas migration at a record high, it has never been more apparent that Australia needs a long-term housing solution to help expand supply. With rigorous capital provisioning models placed upon major banks following the GFC, the banks can no longer participate in the market like they used to, providing greater opportunity for real estate private credit lenders to fill the gap. This all combines to help generate attractive risk-adjusted returns for investors in the asset class. - Mark Power, Qualitas. Earn 0.50 CE/CPD hrs on Portfolio Construction Forum

A counselor and advocate, Mark Power works with former inmates to help them reintegrate into life after prison. In Mark's words, the slippery slope around “the company we keep” or worse “relational disconnection” re-emerges in most second chancer's stories. The pull to reunite with old associates, friends, and even criminal families is often the path of least resistance. We discuss a wide range of topics today around justice, reintegration, and forgiveness. This includes conversations around the mental health implications of prison and the impact incarceration has on both those locked away and the families they leave behind. We also discuss programs such as Blindspotting and Orange is the New Black, amongst others. Mark's dream is that we start building reintegration programs that are so effective that recidivism radically goes down, and we can start closing prisons. CW: Discussions around crime and suicide. The commercial real estate market is a growing alternative investment class across the globe, and Australia is no exception. For confirmation, all one need do is ask Mark Power, the man responsible for debt and credit funds at Melbourne-based Qualitas. Among other points he makes during his appearance on this episode, Power says the current environment of heightened volatility and low public market yields have led many investors to consider private credit — an investment strategy positioned to provide reliable income, risk-adjusted returns and portfolio diversification. We dive deep into the Wells Fargo where McIlroy was a worthy winner and ask the question, is he a Major player once more? We also have the takeaways from Tenerife where Niall Kearney grabbed a career-best finish on the European Tour. We look back at a super weekend of amateur action at Seminole where John Murphy and Mark Power played leading roles for GB&I and there's plenty in between too, from Darren Clarke and Michael Hoey to a lengthy villains' list and a look ahead to a potential Irish Open with fans. As always, we hope you enjoy the listen. Let us know what you think, and if it's good, don't forget to subscribe.

The infamous play off win in Castletroy and life in the US.
COMMENTARY A recurring theme we’ve seen in the book of Mark has been Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. Story after story demonstrates that the God of Israel has now appeared as the person of Jesus. This theme rises to a crescendo in today’s reading when Jesus makes His first public claim about His divinity (Mark 14:62). While Mark wants us to understand that Jesus was fully God, He also wants us to see that He was also fully human. No story expresses His humanity more poignantly than the first episode we read today. Mark 14:32-41 describes Jesus’ raw moments of anguish as He waits with Peter, James, and John for His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. Here, Jesus is described as “deeply distressed and troubled.” He admits to being “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). Earlier, Jesus confidently told James and John that they would drink from a “cup” of suffering with Him (Mark 10:38). Now in their presence, He falls to the ground and pleads God to take this “cup” from Him (Mark 14:36). This is a degree of psychological distress that we are unaccustomed to seeing in Jesus. One reason why Mark might have included this vivid story could be that it shows us that Jesus had a full human experience. He suffered in every way, not just externally but also internally. By enduring the onslaught of sin in all its forms, He became for us a perfect and sympathetic Savior (Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15; 5:7-10). Another reason why we might have this story is that Jesus shows us how to persevere when we suffer for following Him. Jesus finds His inner resolve by praying to the Father three separate times. In contrast, Peter falls asleep three times instead of praying as Jesus asks, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation” (Mark 14:38). It’s noteworthy that at the end of today’s reading, Peter, in his own time of temptation, disowns Jesus three times (Mark 14:66-72). Jesus’ example, therefore, illustrates the power we can receive from God through prayer. God may not always give us exactly what we want for ourselves, but if we turn to Him, God offers the peace and power to persevere. SCRIPTURE MARK 14:32–72 GETHSEMANE 32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” JESUS ARRESTED 43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind. JESUS BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN 53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’ ” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him. PETER DISOWNS JESUS 66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said. 68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or under- stand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway. 69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.” 72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept. REFLECTION 1. Mark 14:47 says, “Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.” This reaction reflects another misunderstanding about what Jesus was trying to accomplish as the Messiah. He wasn’t “leading a rebellion” (Mark 14:48). He was establishing a fundamentally different type of kingdom. This raises the question for us; is it ever appropriate for us to strike at someone like this? Why? 2. How do Jesus’ prayers in the garden help nuance His earlier teaching: “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24)? In what situation do you need to echo Jesus’ words, “Not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36)?

This is another episode in our Amazon For CMOs podcast series, where we're talking to retail executives and CMOs to find out what they are doing, regarding Amazon, in their companies. Today we're sharing Kiri's conversation with Mark Power, the co-author of her new book, Amazon for CMO's. Creating the book was a challenging two-part process for them, which involved first putting all the content together, and then getting people to care about it. And all of this with a looming deadline! In today's episode, Kiri and Mark talk about how the book came to be, and why they chose the approach that they did, which was to focus on the voice of the industry through interviews with actual CMOs and practitioners. Mark Power has been in the field of digital marketing and media for more than twenty years. He has a broad base of experience, having previously owned his own email marketing business and digital agency. About five years ago, he became part of a public group, IPG, where he led a mobile and innovation agency. This gave him a springboard into the world of digital commerce. He then launched his own agency, Podean. Podean consider themselves the marketplace marketing experts and they help brands navigate all the opportunities presented by Amazon in the emerging marketplaces. Tune in today, to find out what Mark has to share. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mark found that a lot of the larger agencies were falling behind when it came to the opportunity around Amazon. For their book, Kiri and Mark interviewed about fifteen CMOs, COOs, head of Amazon, senior folks at CPG brands, brands that sell on Amazon, and even one or two people who don't sell on Amazon but leverage Amazon's media capabilities. Kiri explains why they chose to do the voice of the industry. Kiri talks about the approach that they have taken with this book. Kiri and Mark feel that they have given a well-rounded view of the landscape in their book. There is a lot of content available when it comes to Amazon, particularly around the marketplace and selling on Amazon, but that's not what they are amplifying in this book. The book contains a whole new set of formulas, and it explains how to approach Amazon from a strategic standpoint. They are also planning to launch this book as an audiobook. Kiri and Mark discuss some of the key themes of the book. Different brands choose to engage with Amazon in very different ways. Some of the brands discussed in the book have chosen not to engage with Amazon, however, they do have a strategy. The Amazon economy really needs to be taken seriously. There is still a lot of confusion with executives around Amazon's long-term strategies, and Amazon's complexity is still quite daunting. The automotive industry is looking for ways to partner with Amazon. Some of the things that Mark and Kiri found to be surprising when gathering the information for their book. Some brands have been using Amazon as an innovation platform. Kiri and Mark hope to encourage people with this book. The Kindle version of the book will be available for free on Amazon for the week of September 24th. RESOURCES Amazon For CMOs website - www.amazonforcmos.com Mark’s agency website - https://www.podean.com/ For the first few days after the launch of “Amazon For CMOs”, on September 24th, the Kindle version of the book will be available for free! QUOTES Mark's quotes: "I've been across the digital spectrum but I ended up, about five years ago, in a public group where I was leading a mobile and innovation agency, which then gave me a springboard into this world of digital commerce." "A while back I launched my own agency, called Podean. We're the marketplace marketing experts but we are really here to help brands navigate all the opportunities presented by Amazon on these emerging marketplaces." "There is so much content out there when it comes to Amazon, particularly around the marketplace and selling on Amazon side of things, and how to be the best seller you can be. But that's not what we're amplifying in this book." "In this book, it's really a whole new set of formulas, and how to approach Amazon from a strategic standpoint." "The only failing strategy is to not have a strategy, or just to completely ignore Amazon." Kiri's quotes: "We wanted to do the voice of the industry, rather than the book just being Kiri and Mark telling you how to do Amazon." "We wanted to bring the voice of the industry in because I think Mark and I have both realized that people want to learn from their peers, not just someone sitting on a pedestal." "People want to learn from their peers and they want to have more easy access to some of these conversations that are going on at happy hours, and retail conferences. They want to find out what CMOs and retail executives are saying to each other in confidence, about some of the challenges and opportunities about Amazon." "In the book, we have this continuum of brands and how engaged they are with Amazon."

On this week's episode events in Manchester meant that the usually upbeat Back Chat took on a more sombre note then usual as my panellists Rita Lacey , Mark Power and I talked through some of the many questions raised by bombing. But there was still time to talk about Irish people's reaction to a bit of sun. and an appreciation of the late Roger Moore!
As a child, Magnum photographer Mark Power discovered his father's home-made enlarger in the family attic, a contraption consisting of an upturned flowerpot, a domestic light bulb and a simple camera lens. His interest in photography probably began at this moment, though he later went to art college to study life-drawing and painting instead. After graduating, he travelled for two years around South-East Asia and Australia and it was at this point that he began to realise he enjoyed using a camera more than a pencil and decided to 'become a photographer' on his return to England, two years later, in 1983. He then worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly ten years, before he began teaching in 1992. This coincided with a shift towards long-term, self initiated projects which now sit comfortably alongside a number of large-scale commissions in the industrial sector. For many years his work has been seen in numerous galleries and museums across the world, and is in several important collections, both public and private, including the Arts Council of England, the British Council, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. To date Power has published eight books: The Shipping Forecast (1996), a poetic response to the esoteric language of daily maritime weather reports; Superstructure (2000), a documentation of the construction of London's Millennium Dome; The Treasury Project (2002), about the restoration of a nineteenth-century historical monument: 26 Different Endings (2007), which depicts those landscapes unlucky enough to fall just off the edge of the London A-Z, a map which could be said to define the boundaries of the British capital; The Sound of Two Songs (2010), the culmination of his five year project set in contemporary Poland following her accession to the European Union; Mass (2013), an investigation into the power and wealth of the Polish Catholic church; Die Mauer ist Weg! (2014), about chance and choice when confronted, accidentally, with a major news event - in this case the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Destroying the Laboratory for the Sake of the Experiment (2016), a collaboration with the poet Daniel Cockrill about pre-Brexit England. Mark Power joined Magnum Photos as a Nominee in 2002, and became a full Member in 2007. Meanwhile, in his other life, he is visiting Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton, on the south coast of England, where he lives with his partner Jo, their children Chilli (b.1998) and Milligan (b.2002) and their dog Kodak.
In life, you will fall, that's for certain. If you plan to be successful, you have to be able to stand up again. Setbacks and adversities will plague all of our lives, but the most successful have the ability to bounce right back up. They use the same hard ground that they fell on to help them spring back up. This is a can't miss show.
Murray Ballard embarked on a degree in furniture and product design before realising that learning about the chemical properties of plastic held little interest for him. At this point he jumped ship and switched to an art foundation course where he duly discovered something much more exciting. He graduated from the University of Brighton in 2007 with a degree in Photography. The following year he was selected for Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed 08 – the annual showcase of work by the ‘most promising recent graduates’ at The Photographers’ Gallery, London. In 2011 the British Journal of Photography recognised him as an ‘emerging photographer of note’, following his debut solo show at Impressions Gallery, Bradford, The Prospect of Immortality, which took as its subject the strange, marginal world of cryonics: the process of storing a dead body by freezing it until science has advanced to such a degree that it is able to bring that person back to life. Immediately after leaving college, Murray got the job of assisting Magnum photographer Mark Power, a role which he stayed in until quite recently. During those past ten years he has taken on his own commissions, worked on his own personal projects and continued his cryonics story - which he had first began while he still studying after coming across a curious news story in The Guardian. Exactly a decade later the book of that project has just been published by GOST books. Murray's photographs have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers including: Esquire, FT Weekend, GEO, GQ, The Guardian, The Independent and Wired. In episode 23, Murray Discusses: Early times doing "bad Jeff Walls"; a turning point - Alec Soth, Sleeping By The Mississippi; early influence: sci-fi movies; learing about "picture making" with Mark Power; the unlikely origins of his cryonics project; the Prospect of Immortality; working with GOST on the book
