“In October 1975, I was shot six times. And while I was on the hospital gurney, doctor told me I was going to die. I heard a very clear voice that spoke to me and said, you're not going to die. You're going to be a chaplain at San Quentin prison.” (Chaplain Earl Smith) Chaplain Earl Smith believes that ministry to the incarcerated is about so much more than rehabilitation. It's about regeneration. Using the power of his own story of transformation from gang member to pastor, Chaplain Smith has maintained a faithful presence and witness for many decades of pastoral service to the incarcerated at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and now to professional athletes (including the Golden State Warriors, San Francisco 49ers, and the San Francisco Giants). Today on the show Mark Labberton and Chaplain Earl Smith discuss the moral and spiritual factors of prison chaplaincy and ministry for those on death row; the meaning of freedom and education; how he ministered to the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood; the difference that positive mentoring and coaching makes in young people's lives; and the transformative power of the gospel to go beyond rehabilitation to regeneration. About Earl Smith Born and reared in Stockton, California, the cycle of events in Earl's life came to a head in 1975 when he was shot 6 times while living the life of a minor gangster. Although expected to die, Earl's father's faith, prayers, and love seemed to bring him through. The words of his father have motivated him, since that event, “you are a rebel, but you are God's rebel, and God is going to use you to His glory.” In 1983, at the age of 27, Earl became the youngest person ever hired as a Protestant Chaplain by the California Department of Corrections. He is author of Death Row Chaplain: Unbelievable True Stories from America's Most Notorious Prison. Chaplain Smith currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Franklin Home, a Transition Living/Reentry Home for men and is the Team Pastor for the San Francisco 49ers' and the Golden State Warriors. From 1998 to 2006 Chaplain Smith was the Chapel Leader for the San Francisco Giants. Chaplain Smith has ministered to teams playing in NFL Super Bowls, MLB World Series and NBA Championships. In 2000, Chaplain Smith was recognized as the National Correctional Chaplain of the Year. Chaplain Smith has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including HBO, CNN, The 700 Club, Trinity Broadcasting Network and The History Channel. Earl has been featured in Christianity Today, Ebony, Guidepost, Ministry Today, Newsweek, People's Weekly, The African Americans and Time. Show Notes Get your copy of Death Row Chaplain: Unbelievable True Stories from America's Most Notorious Prison How Mark and Chaplain Smith met The value of education “I had to stop my education because of the execution schedule at San Quentin.” How Earl Smith got into prison chaplaincy “In October 1975, I was shot six times. And while I was on the hospital gurney, doctor told me I was going to die. I heard a very clear voice that spoke to me and said, you're not going to die. You're going to be a chaplain at San Quentin prison.” What San Quentin prison is like “We used to call San Quentin the Bastille by the Bay. The thing that really stood out for me was the fact that for 13 of the first 16 months I was there, the prison was locked down. The day I interviewed, two people were killed, so they stopped my interview twice. So I understood where I was. I understood the context of confinement. What I also went in there understanding was. It was not about rehabilitation. It was about regeneration.” “I believe that that's part of chaplaincy is not to allow the confines of the wall to dictate who you are.” A sense of liberty Fear and reality Earl Smith's ministry to the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood How faith shaped a capacity to be free from fear for the sake of love Mass incarceration and the new Jim Crow The drug epidemic and its impact on mass incarceration “How can you help us prepare these guys to come home?” “Whether you're on condemned role, if you have a life without the possibility of parole, or life sentence, or whatever it is, my job is still to share the same gospel message.” “Present your body as a living sacrifice.” Pastoral care in the prison system Calling prisoners by their first names instead of their numbers “When you've done it onto the least of these, you've done it to me, so there's a value in your presence.” Chaplaincy to professional athletes “The states that have the largest prison systems are also the states that send the most professional athletes in the pro sports.” Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers The difference that positive mentoring and coaching makes in young people's lives “Every man wants someone to acknowledge there's something positive in what you're doing.” “They May Know Your Number, But God Knows Your Name” (Clifton Jansky, country western singer) God's way of paying attention to us; “how vested God is in our pursuit of being fully human” (reference to Marilynne Robinson) Performance and identity (reference to Ben Houltberg) Jerry Rice, #80 and “who wore the number before you?” Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action “God is a relational God. … Sports is relational.” When did chaplaincy in sports become a thing? Pat Ritchie's chaplaincy Understanding the value and difference chaplaincy makes Documentary and Film Adaptation: Death Row Chaplain “A story not of rehabilitation but regeneration” “That's really what the story is about. Some of my yesterday, some of my today. And what I believe to be my tomorrow.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.
MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Mar 21st Publish Date: Mar 20th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, March 21st, and Happy 61st Birthday to actor Matthew Broderick. ***03.21.24 – BIRTHDAY – MATTHEW BRODERICK*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Cobb School Board Member Criticizes Agenda of Upcoming Meeting as 'Premature' Former GA Attorney General Sam Olens Honors Legacy of Cobb County Leaders at Kiwanis Club of Marietta Mableton Council Meets for 3-Day Conference Friday Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss celiacs disease. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb School Board Member Criticizes Agenda of Upcoming Meeting as 'Premature' The Cobb County Board of Education is poised to deliberate on the appointment of a construction manager for the proposed $50 million event center and examine policy amendments during its Thursday meeting. However, specifics regarding the construction manager selection and associated costs have not been made public, prompting critiques over the absence of transparency. Board member Becky Sayler has voiced objections to the perceived opaqueness surrounding the event center project and the suggested policy modifications. These include the proposed deletion of the term "equitable" from the district's resource distribution policy and an increase in the superintendent's authority concerning budget transfers. Sayler's concerns, shared via social media, elicited a rebuttal from board chairman Randy Scamihorn, who labeled the critique as premature. Additionally, there is ongoing debate among stakeholders about the revised policies' definition of "stakeholders" and worries over the proposed changes to budget oversight. The board's discussion is anticipated this Thursday. STORY 2: Former GA Attorney General Sam Olens Honors Legacy of Cobb County Leaders During a speech to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, former Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens commemorated the impactful contributions of Cobb County leaders David Hankerson, Van Pearlberg, and Earl Smith. Olens detailed Hankerson's commitment to service and principled leadership, Pearlberg's achievements within the Medicaid Fraud Division coupled with his empathetic demeanor, and Smith's dedication to enhancing public transit and preserving culture. His speech also acknowledged the significant influence and partnership of the leaders' spouses in their endeavors. STORY 3: Mableton Council Meets for 3-Day Conference Friday The Mableton City Council is set to conduct a three-day strategic conference in Cumberland, beginning this Friday, with the aim of outlining the city's plans for the upcoming year. The agenda includes a team-building event at Punch Bowl Social at the Battery on Friday, followed by planning sessions at the Doubletree Suites over the weekend. Discussions will center on transitioning certain services from Cobb County to the city, aligning with city charter requirements, and will cover key areas such as planning and zoning, code enforcement, solid waste management, and recreational facilities development on Saturday. Sunday's meetings will focus on financial controls, a budget calendar overview, and a comprehensive operational plan. Mayor Michael Owens highlighted the choice of Cumberland for the conference as a strategic move to enhance focus and productivity by minimizing routine distractions. The conference will be open to public attendance. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back. Break: HENRY CO SHERIFFS – DRAKE STORY 4: Stretch of South Cobb Drive Near Dobbins Closed for 2 Months The Georgia Department of Transportation has initiated a two-month closure of a 2.8-mile stretch of South Cobb Drive in Cobb County. This measure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of a culvert near Dobbins Air Reserve Base, which has sustained damage following recent heavy rainfall. The affected culvert, dating back to the 1940s, has deteriorated significantly beyond its anticipated lifespan. It is important to note that metal culverts are expected to last between 30 to 40 years, while concrete culverts can last between 60 to 80 years. Motorists in the area are encouraged to seek alternative routes and are advised to utilize navigation applications or the 511GA service for real-time traffic updates. Detour routes have been established, guiding traffic through Cobb Parkway, South Marietta Parkway, and Fairground Street, with secondary routes including Atlanta Street. To mitigate congestion during peak travel periods, GDOT plans to adjust signal timings accordingly. STORY 5: Big Subdivision Wins and Townhomes Lose at Zoning During the recent zoning hearing conducted by the Cobb Board of Commissioners, a significant development proposal by InLine Communities received unanimous approval for the construction of a 180-home subdivision in south Cobb. This decision came after thorough consideration of stormwater management concerns, which were satisfactorily addressed in the proposal. The proactive approach of InLine Communities towards community engagement and their effective stormwater management plan were key factors contributing to the approval. Conversely, two separate proposals for the development of townhomes were not approved by the commissioners. The first proposal, involving the construction of 96 townhomes near Dobbins Air Reserve Base, and the second, for 74 townhomes in northeast Cobb, were both denied. The primary reasons for these rejections were concerns related to increased density and inconsistencies with existing zoning regulations. We'll be back in a moment. The Mentors Radio Host Tom Loarie today talks with legendary San Quentin Death Row Chaplain, the Rev. Earl Smith. Rev. Smith has been on our show before, but in case you didn't notice it in his interview, we replay it for you today - Thanksgiving Weekend - because every part of his life and story echoes a life of Gratitude. Even though his father was a preacher, Earl Smith chose a different path, for reasons you'll hear in the interview. Got involved in gangs, in drug selling, and... eventually... was shot 6 times and left for dead. That's when a real-life miracle happened. He survived, but it wasn't thought he'd pull through in the hospital. The miracle took place in the hospital -- nothing outstanding or "showy," but rather something interior, something deep, something he knew without doubt was beyond this world, which he credits to the prayers and faith of his father. You'll learn about all this and more -- the surprising way he became the youngest Death Row chaplain EVER in history, the common sense ways he's influenced and impacted inmates on Death Row as well a other prison chaplains... And more -- Rev. Earl Smith is also the Chaplain of two well-known pro-sports teams the San Francisco Bay Area—the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers. You'll learn how he's used his breadth of listening experience and prayerful wisdom to build and, in a sense, cross-polinate between pro athletes and Death Row criminals such fledgling virtues as Hope, Gratitude, Focus, Humility and a sense of Higher Purpose. Don't miss the personal story, journey and insights of Rev. Earl Smith as he talks with The Mentors Host Tom Loarie! Find Show Notes here. Listen to the radio podcast below. In this episode, legendary chaplain Rev. Earl Smith talks with Host Tom Loarie about his life-changing experiences and what matters most in life. Earl Smith is the youngest person ever to be hired (in 1983, at the age of 27) to serve hardened Death Row inmates at notorious, maximum security San Quentin prison. He's still serving Death Row inmates there -- more than 38 years! He's also the long-time, much-praised chaplain for several Pro sports teams, including the San Francisco 49ers and the Golden State Warriors. Rev. Smith is often asked to appear on radio and TV shows, including CNN, CBS Morning News, HBO, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel and more. He's been featured in Newsweek, Ebony, Christianity Today, Time magazine, People's Weekly, Guidepost, The African Americans and many more. In 2020, Chaplain Smith was named "National Correctional Chaplain of the Year." He was awarded two Angel awards for excellence in Media, to name just a few of many honors received. But Earl Smith sure didn't start out as chaplain material! In fact, raised in the town of Stockton, California, he spent his teen years honing his criminal drug activity....until one day he found himself alone and on the ground, having been shot six times and left to die. His father, a preacher and pastor prayed and loved him back to life in the hospital and prophetically told Earl: "You are a rebel, but you are God's rebel and he's going to use you to his glory." PURE INSPIRATION! Find Show Notes here (where you'll also find a link to Earl's book, Death Row Chaplain: Unbelievable True Stories from America's Most Notorious Prison.
