On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Emmy award-winning and Golden Globe-winning comedy writer, actor, and comedian Monica Piper. After a smash-hit run off-Broadway, her one-woman show, “Not That Jewish,” returned to The Braid in Santa Monica for the show's 10 year anniversary; it runs through the end of May. Piper was a high school English teacher, before she left to try comedy and eventually create this show. She has been a standup comic, a writer for “Roseanne” and “Mad About You,” and head writer on “Rugrats.” “Not That Jewish” is a love letter to being Jewish, as Piper tells stories of her family - particularly her funny father and passing on the humor gene to her son - and her foray into comedy. “Someone asked me what's my favorite thing about being Jewish … there's so many things, but right up there was food,” Piper shares. “They said, ‘Even gefilte fish?' Yes, even gefilte fish.” In fact, a chopped liver sandwich, one of Piper's go-to comfort foods, is something she strongly associates with her Jewish identity. “Food is so much a part of life and Jewish life, but it's the comradery,” Piper says. “As a child, my memories [of Shabbat at my aunt's home with] people talking and arguing and laughing is so much a part of me, so I associate that with food.” Monica Piper shares food memories, the importance of laughter, and her “Not That Jewish'” origin story, which came with encouragement and assistance from The Braid founder and artistic director Ronda Spinak. There are also tangents on the Instant Pot, goals, and a shared fandom of The Braid. Taste Buds host Debra Eckerling recently did a Sunday at the Braid event for her new book, “52 Secrets for Goal-Setting and Goal-Getting,” via Zoom, hosted by David Chiu and along with Katie Chin and Elaine Hall, who are in the book. The Braid's newest salon show, “For the Love of Animals,” opens next week. Learn more about “Not That Jewish” at The-Braid.org/Monica and the new show at The-Braid.org. Ezra is a major motion picture that tells the story of a family, across generations, that has a deep love for a young autistic boy. The film authentically conveys the challenges that a family faces when confronted with societal expectations and insensitive professionals who has little understanding or respect for a child that sees the world through a different lens. It also beautifully portrays those rarefied times when other people, even strangers, see the beauty, the honesty, and the inspirational qualities of a young child who has a strong sense of self, and approaches life with eyes wide open. Barry and Dave explore themes of Ezra with Tony Goldwyn, its director, Tony Spiridakis, writer of the screenplay, and Elaine Hall who is a casting consultant for the film. Matt Hoverman has written for Disney Jr's Fancy Nancy and Sofia The First, PBS' Arthur and Curious George, among many other excellent kids shows, along with being an accomplished playwright and voice over actor - but we reached out because of his efforts to normalize people who carry the label of "different." Inspired by his sister, Matt has made an effort over the years to include characters that expose young viewers to learning differences and differing abilities in an accessible, digestible and fun way. Most recently, he wrote in a character with Autism into Disney Jr.'s Fancy Nancy - released on International Autism Awareness/Acceptance Day. Matt wanted to make it clear that the episode was a team effort, including the magnifique leadership of Fancy Nancy’s head writer Krista Tucker, the brilliant eye of the director Jamie Mitchell, the entire talented crew, our encouraging executives at Disney Junior, and our insightful expert consultants, particularly Elaine Hall of RespectABILITY – who all did their best to get this very important story just right. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundslikeautism/message

You've probably never thought of autism as a miracle, but for today's guest, Elaine Hall, it certainly is. Elaine was a top acting coach in Hollywood, until she decided it was time to adopt a little boy from Russia. This angel, whom she named Neal, changed the path of her life forever - not just because she became a mom, but because he was soon diagnosed with autism. Her life became centered around how to connect with him, teach him, and bring out his full potential. She broke new ground in doing so, that she's since come to share with families all over the world who have autistic children. The United Nations selected Elaine's memoir, Now I See the Moon: A Mother, a Son, and the Miracle of Autism, for World Autism Awareness Day. And her second book, Seven Keys to Unlock Autism, has won honors, as well. She is the Founder/Creator of The Miracle Project, which helps autistic children through the arts, the same way she created a miracle in her son. Please share this hope with others.

I highly recommend her aut-erobics DVD to any one who works with children on the autism spectrum." - Elaine Hall, Founder of The Miracle Project (Autism: The Musical), Author: Now I See the Moon: a mother, a son, a miracle
Her career has always involved children, and when she was ready to have a child of her own, she traveled half way around the world to an orphanage in Russia to adopt a two-year old boy. It was love at first sight, but when her son Neal was diagnosed with autism, former Hollywood acting coach Elaine Hall, aka Coach E, took matters into her own hands, and used her resources to guide him toward an increasingly independent life. In the process, she founded The Miracle Project, a groundbreaking organization that uses the performing arts to connect with children with autism. Both controversial and unorthodox, Elaine' innovative approach has been praised by leaders in the field of autism. She was also the subject of an Emmy Award -winning documentary, Autism: The Musical. Elaine and I will be discussing - Now I See the Moon; a story of hope, faith, and miracles; a story only a mother could tell. Please call 347.327.9995 on Tuesday July 6th from 5-6 PM CST US to join Elaine and I live on the air with your questions and personal stories.
