My guest for the latest Historical Happy Hour is the fabulous Elise Hooper! She will be joining me to discuss her latest novel Angels of the Pacific. Inspired by the extraordinary true stories of World War II's American Army nurses famously known as the Angels of Bataan and the unsung contributions of Filipinas of the resistance, this novel transports us to a remarkable era of hope, bravery, perseverance, and ultimately—victory.
Elise Hooper and Ashley Hasty talk about Angels of the Pacific, which New York Times bestselling author Lauren Willig described as "Absolutely riveting. A stay-up-all night read about two very different women who discover just how strong they can be—and just how much they'll dare—during the brutal Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II. This story of endurance and sisterhood will have you turning pages late into the night." Elise talks about her research trip to the Philippines in February of 2020, how this book ended up being perfect for the times, and how her next novel is very much in response to the pandemic. She also shares some of her favorite books and writing advice for her fellow authors. Elise and I discuss Angels of the Pacific, writing about the Pacific arena during World War 2, her research trip and snorkeling around a World War 2 war ship, how different the war in the Pacific was from what was happening in Europe, restoring her great-grandmother's dollhouse, and much more. ANGELS OF THE PACIFIC by Elise Hooper (her fourth novel) tells the powerful story of American army and navy nurses kept as prisoners for nearly three years during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. Many of them had fled the hardships of the Great Depression at home before the war for the glamour and adventure of Manila, one of the most desirable postings in the world. But everything changed when the Japanese army invaded with lightning speed and devastating results only hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. These angels of the Pacific served on the front lines until captured as prisoners of war on Corregidor, a US post on a fortified island near Manila, and subsequently held behind the high stone walls of Manila's Santo Tomas Internment Camp. This book is dedicated to the author's grandfather who served in the US Navy in the Pacific during the war. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

It was such a treat to have a conversation with the author of a book I love. Elise Hooper is the author of Fast Girls, an incredible story of the 1936 U.S. Women's Olympic track team. Elise is a native New Englander who spent several years writing for television and online news outlets before getting a MA and teaching high-school literature and history. She and I delve into the book she wrote, and how it is both an encouraging story to show how far we've come, but also a cautionary tale about how much more we need to accomplish. Whether or not you consider yourself an athlete, there's plenty for you in this episode and in this book.

Today on Alternate Histories, I am joined by Elise Hooper. "A New Englander by birth (and at heart), Elise lives with her husband and two young daughters in Seattle, where she teaches history and literature. The Other Alcott was her first novel." Elise and I discuss her new novel, Fast Girls. "In the 1928 Olympics, Chicago's Betty Robinson competes as a member of the first-ever women's delegation in track and field. Destined for further glory, she returns home feted as America's Golden Girl until a nearly-fatal airplane crash threatens to end everything. Outside of Boston, Louise Stokes, one of the few black girls in her town, sees competing as an opportunity to overcome the limitations placed on her. Eager to prove that she has what it takes to be a champion, she risks everything to join the Olympic team. From Missouri, Helen Stephens, awkward, tomboyish, and poor, is considered an outcast by her schoolmates, but she dreams of escaping the hardships of her farm life through athletic success. Her aspirations appear impossible until a chance encounter changes her life. These three athletes will join with others to defy society's expectations of what women can achieve. As tensions bring the United States and Europe closer and closer to the brink of war, Betty, Louise, and Helen must fight for the chance to compete as the fastest women in the world amidst the pomp and pageantry of the Nazi-sponsored 1936 Olympics in Berlin." Today, Vicki chats with three authors who weave historical twists with fictional tales to create suspenseful page turners! First, returning guest Steve Berry is noted for his mastery of blending fiction and history into a cocktail of intrigue and deception. The Malta Exchange, The latest in his best-selling Cotton Malone series, finds the titular character caught in a web of Vatican intrigue that involves the Knights of Malta and lost documents that could change history. Steve’s novels have been translated into 40 languages with 20,000,000 copies in 51 countries. Next, Kris Frieswick’s 20 years of writing experience didn’t prepare her for the journey as she embarked on her first novel. The Ghost Manuscript is Indiana Jones with a female lead — we see our heroine on a quest to find King Arthur’s tomb that takes readers from Wales, to Boston and eventually to Cape Cod. Kris is a journalist, editor, humorist, teacher and author whose work has appeared in national magazines, newspapers and books for more than 20 years. Finally, Seattle based author Elise Hooper gives readers a peek into the life of photographer Dorothea Lange … the woman who captured the real America … in Learning to See. Elise has taught high school English and history and enjoys highlighting characters in her books who are real woman that have been often overlooked in history books.
Author Elise Hooper discusses the life and work of Depression era photojournalist Dorothea Lange.
May Alcott Nieriker is mostly remembered as a footnote in a famous family: the daughter of Bronson Alcott and the inspiration for Amy March in her sister Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. But Alcott Nieriker was a writer and an accomplished painter who studied in Paris and was described by John Ruskin as “the only artist worthy to copy Turner.” This episode emerges from the the conference “Recovering May Alcott Nieriker’s Life and Works,” which was held at the Université Paris Diderot on June 28, 2018. What work can be done through research, teaching, and even historical fiction to bring her to the fore? Here Azelina Flint (University of East Anglia) and her students Poppy Henson and Emelia Platt introduce listeners to May Alcott Nieriker and interview novelist Elise Hooper, author of The Other Alcott (2017), Marlowe Daly-Galeano (Lewis Clark State College), Lauren Hehmeyer (Texarkana College), and John Matteson (John Jay College, CUNY). This episode was created by Flint and produced by Chris Timms (Essex University) with post-production help from Mark Sussman.
