And to be honest, it's arguably one of the best albums that they've released in years! John talks about that, their "Final Tour" (including their upcoming show at the Wilbur Theater in Boston on September 23rd), their fans, being produced by the late Ray Manzarek of The Doors, his bandmates (Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebreak) and much more! EP256: X - More Fun in the New World - Beginning with their debut “Los Angeles” in 1979, X put out four consecutive nearly perfect records culminating with “More Fun in the New World" in 1983. It would be their last album produced by Ray Manzarek and the bands sound would more overtly incorporate elements of Roots Rock and Americana whole John Doe and Exene Cervenka's lyrics would begin leaning into current events and political and social happenings in addition to the amazingly detailed, heart wrenching observations from their personal lives. Maybe more than any previous release, More Fun in the New World is the sound of X starting down adulthood. Today's episode is about "X: The Unheard Music", a 1986 doc about the LA-based punk legends X. The movie was directed by W.T. Morgan. Our guest for this episode is another legend: Juliana Hatfield! Juliana is known for her many solo albums along with her work with the bands Blake Babies and the Lemonheads. Her new album, Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO, is out now. We can't get it out of our heads. X: The Unheard Music features the band performing many of their classic songs (along with their cover of the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" featuring a very dadcore Ray Manzarek). In between, we get to spend some time with each of the band members as they discuss their lives and the evolution of the band. D.J. Bonebrake plays a Benny Goodman tune on the vibraphone! John Doe and Exene Cervenka cover Hank Williams! We get a revealing conversation from a clown-ass record executive explaining why he chose to sign long-forgotten 80s rockers Point Blank over X! We had the pleasure of interviewing Skating Polly over Zoom video! Skating Polly share “I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” – a deceptively joyous rock song that is accompanied by the official music video directed by Christian Papierniak. The multiple award-winning director, producer, and writer best known for his hit Indie feature film Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town brings the track to life with a humorous touch.“I'm Sorry For Always Apologizing” follows the raucous single “Hickey King” and is the second track to be taken from Skating Polly's new album Chaos County Line, which is set for release on June 23rd via El Camino Media. “Doctors don't think I'm sick / Just a self important prick” Kelli Mayo sings sweetly, sending up her past relationship mistakes with a cutting sense of self-judgement."This song has some of my favorite lyrics on the record" Kelli comments. "It was originally inspired by my very real habit of over apologizing, then the concept came to me to write it from a perspective of constantly hurting someone you're wildly in love with, which is a feeling I unfortunately know all too well. So, some of it is definitely hyperbole, but some of it is about my short-lived love affair with the bass player from Starcrawler. And the super huge prick I make myself out to be as the narrator is my big fear of how I must've come across to him and is also a furthering of many apologies I've given him on the matter..."Over the past decade, few artists have embodied the unbridled freedom of punk like Skating Polly. Formed when stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, the band have channeled their chameleonic musicality into a sound they call “Ugly Pop,” unruly and subversive and wildly melodic. With Kelli's brother Kurtis Mayo joining on drums in 2017, they've also built a close-knit community of fans while earning the admiration of their musical forebears, a feat that's found them collaborating with icons like X's Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson, touring with Babes In Toyland, and starring as the subject of a feature-length documentary. On their forthcoming double album Chaos County Line, Skating Polly reach a whole new level of self-possession, ultimately sharing their most expansive and emotionally powerful work to date. The follow-up to 2018's The Make It All Show, Chaos County Line finds Skating Polly showcasing the depth of their growth, both as songwriters and personally. Whether they're opening up about matters internal (identity, disassociation, unhealthy coping mechanisms) or external (obsession, deception, gaslighting), Skating Polly imbue that outpouring with an unfettered emotional truth.Working again with Brad Wood, the acclaimed producer behind indie-rock classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, Chaos Country Line sees their songs journey from art-punk to noise-rock to piano-driven power-pop, matching that musical complexity with a sharply honed narrative voice that manifests in countless forms (ultravivid poetry, diary-like confession, fearlessly detailed storytelling, etc.).We want to hear from you! Originally from Austin Texas, Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Kym Priess is a pure pioneerwoman, fierce frontwoman, adventurous musician, writer and actor. As of late, she has specialized in creating conceptual whimsical performance art mixed with immersive, interactive rock n' roll experiences under the name STUNTDRIVER. The debut concept album “Saga” was released last September on Rock Hand Records and has been described as “Very Peaches / Karen O feel to the vocals, edgy and full of fire,” by blog Analogue Trash. This project initially debuted as a full immersive production in LA to a sold-out pair of wild, multi-media shows. Spectacle concerts have started up again as a full band whose members include Kym, John Avila (Oingo Boingo), Anton Söder and Sean Burgess (Boneacre, Nightjacket.) In fact, Kym just returned from a solo tour to Seattle and back and audiences are loving the interactive elements (like crawling through a human tunnel) especially after lacking live entertainment for so long. Kym's work pushes boundaries, forms and comfort levels yet maintains a fun-loving, absurd and curious tone and has been seen in music venues, galleries, theaters, non-traditional locations and federal prisons in New York, LA, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Honolulu and Austin since the 1990s. Kym's hybrid creations are highly influenced by the Wizard of Oz, the art of drag and disguise, clown, Cindy Sherman, Grace Jones, Karen Finley, David Bowie, alter-egos, elaborate costuming and makeup, 80s/90s music videos, fairy tales, old superhero stories, and human interaction. Recipient of multiple artist residencies including Laura Escude's Transmute Retreat and The Field, this discipline bender's career took root in the NYC/NYU experimental theater world prompting many theatrical, comedic and musical works including her first rock opera that was awarded “Best of the Fringe” (SF Fringe Festival 2005). Kym has fronted and formed multiple bands, written 300 songs (many of which can be heard on Bravo's Vanderpump Rules), shared stages with Exene Cervenka and Fishbone and her voice can be heard on William Shatner's Spirit in the Sky. In addition to playing live shows again, Kym recently shot a comedy for Amazon, and is returning to the pen writing new songs and a darkly comedic pilot along with creating a multi-sensory side project named after her late great bronco-riding father, Ryland. Kym loves tubing down a river more than anything else. https://www.stuntdrivermusic.com/stuntdrivermusic Bonus link: BLAZAR opened up for Stuntdriver in Eugene, OR recently - here is a link to the face-melting sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHaJ8lluw5s

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of guests who I can call legends without hesitation: Shirley Manson and John Doe. Doe is a founding member of the insanely influential punk band X, which started life way back in 1977 Los Angeles. They were part of a scene that leaned into hardcore punk, but X set itself apart by sneaking elements of country and Americana into their blistering records and live sets. And the chemistry between Doe and his co-lead singer Exene Cervenka was legendary: In fact, it still is. Though the band has split a few times over the years, they're still actively rocking all these years later, and in fact released a really great record in 2020, called Alphabetland—it was their first in about 20 years. Doe has also been an active solo artist as well, and he's got a great new album coming out May 20, 2022: It's called Fables in a Foreign Land, and it's a concept record whose tales take place in the 1890s. It's dark and folky, and includes some songwriting help from a bunch of amazing folks, including today's other guest, Shirley Manson. Manson of course is the singer and frontperson of Garbage, which she's been a part of steadily since the early 1990s. Garbage was formed by producer Butch Vig—he of Nirvana's Nevermind fame—and was a massive success right out of the gate, with hits like “Queer,” “Stupid Girl,” and “Only Happy When It Rains.” They even did one of the best James Bond themes in recent memory, “The World is Not Enough.” The band has released a steady stream of great records over the years, including last year's No Gods No Masters. A bonus track from that album, “Destroying Angels,” was written with and features both John Doe and Exene Cervenka, and an entirely different version of it also appears on this great new John Doe record. In this chat, Manson grills Doe on his intentions as a songwriter, and he asks her about Garbage's process as well. Manson wants to know whether Doe considers himself a singer or songwriter first, and she refers to Butch Vig more than once in her charming Scottish accent as "Butchie." They also talk about the afterlife, and how playing new music for the people closest to you can be a little deflating. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Shirley Manson and John Doe for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcast platform and all social media channels. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time! CORRECTION: May 12, 6:17 PM Shirley claims via Twitter that she never referred to Vig as “Butchie,” and upon further review of the tapes, it seems I was misinterpreting a breath as another syllable. Apologies to Ms. Manson!

Stefano Ferrian lives in a little town near the Italian Alps. On a good day, he can see the Matterhorn and he chooses this life as it allows his artistry to flourish unchecked. With that creative bump, Stefano has partnered with 3 other superhuman musical forces to create SYK, a dark metal mindblow of unseen proportions. The new album, Pyramiden, allows us to see into this seemingly impenetrable world, giving us glimpses of faded hardcore, lilting vocals in the shape of questions marks and a digital thud, guaranteed to confound all those daring to listen. It's wild and magical and a must for the discriminating metal fan. Mark my words, SYK is a new thing and like the Italian supercars of Modena, you won't see them coming or going. This is my blast beat interview with the songwriter of SYK. Led by the nihilistic vocal assault of Kayros, SYK is at once grim and complex; relentless and alluring, fusing the tight, rhythmic pummeling of Meshuggah with the haunting melodies of Bjork.Following their debut LP Atoma (2014), the band released their second effort, I-Optikon, on Housecore Records (2016). Produced by Philip H. Anselmo, I-Optikon reaped critical accolades from fans and critics in the know. Lauded New Noise Magazine, “We just haven't heard anything even remotely like this before – and I don't think we're going to forget it anytime soon.” Echoing Magazine championed, “Female vocals that carry a yell like Exene Cervenka, as done with the same power as Henry Rollins,” while Skulls ‘N' Bones likened the listen to, “… a trip through the empty, shattered halls of someone's emotional insane asylum,” adding, “it's music to swallow glass by.”And with 2022 comes the band's third full-length Pyramiden. Composed and recorded over the course of three years, the seven-track offering was mixed in the Winter of 2020/2021 at Inverno Studios under the supervision of Fabrizio Gesuato, while mastering took place at Anselmo's own Nodferatu's Lair with Stephen Berrigan at the helm. The record features artwork by Elena Romenkova.Comments Ferrian, “Pyramiden is about finding the way to isolate oneself to all the uneasiness coming from society, then find a suitable space to face one's uneasiness. It's being in the farthest place on earth where silence gives room to all sorts of visions or hallucinations. As with the previous release, Pyramiden follows the alchemic principle of dissolving in order to assume a new shape but diving far deeper into obscurity where surviving means, in fact, to invent light into darkness.”SYK:Dalila Kayros – vocals/synthsStefano Ferrian – guitarMarcello Cravini – guitarMauro Maraldo – drumsMarco Mastrobuono – guest bass-----------------------------------------Subscribe to both shows here: https://bit.ly/3airCvhWanna be on the show? Pee-wee Herman has been a household name for decades, but the man behind the iconic tv series Pee-wee's Playhouse and spin-off movies is even more fascinating. Paul Ruebens is an actor, comedian, and writer. He's been featured in way too many films to mention as Pee-wee and also playing serious roles, including the flamboyant hairdresser/drug dealer in Ted Demme's crime film Blow. You may have heard him doing voiceovers in a number of cartoons and not even realized it was him. In this episode, Paul and hostess Pleasant Gehman talk about his Florida teen years hanging out with Exene Cervenka, his time at Cal Arts and The Groundlings and his ubiquitous presence in the Hollywood punk scene in the 1970's and ‘80's. They discuss his pandemic projects- the memoir he's writing, his new radio show and the documentary film that's in the works. Also included: what it's like to have David Bowie as your Plus One at an after hours party, anecdotes about The Go-Go's, Joey Ramone, Prince and other rock stars...plus the therapeutic value of throwing pies.More from Pleasant Gehmanwww.pleasantgehman.comInstagram: @princessofhollywoodwww.facebook.com/pleasant.gehmanwww.twitter.com/PleasantGehman1This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

A Hollywood icon, her multi-disciplinary creative output is nothing short of staggering.During the 1970's, she was one of the first punks in Los Angeles, documenting the music scene she helped create in her fanzine Lobotomy, which lead to her writing for mainstream music and entertainment publications. Her alternative city guide book The Underground Guide To Los Angeles spent nine weeks on The LA Times Best Sellers List.In the early 1980's, Pleasant collaborated with producer/director Max Tash on a script based on her all-girl band The Screaming Sirens, called The Runnin' Kind (which she also starred in) released theatrically by MGM in 1989. The Screaming Sirens toured extensively throughout North America and released two albums on Enigma Records, Fiesta and Voodoo, as well as many singles. Concurrent with The Screaming Sirens, Pleasant and life-long friend Iris Berry founded The Ringling Sisters, a writing and spoken word group made up of female lead singers from popular LA bands. The Ringling Sisters soon morphed into a band, and were signed by Ode/ A&M Records, releasing the spoken word and music LP Sixty Watt Reality, produced by Lou Adler.Under the stage name Princess Farhana; Pleasant has been an icon in the fields of belly dance and burlesque since the early 1990's. The book also features Exene Cervenka, Henry Rollins, members of The Go-Go's and several others involved in the late '70's Los Angeles punk scene.

Episode 10 will be looking at the influential women of punk and new wave that revolutionized the way women were seen, heard, and represented in the music industry. Women have made significant contributions to punk rock music and its subculture since its inception in the 1970s. In contrast to the rock music and heavy metal scenes of the 1970s, which were dominated by men, the anarchic, counter-cultural mindset of the punk scene in mid-and-late 1970s encouraged women to participate. This participation played a role in the historical development of punk music, especially in the US and UK at that time, and continues to influence and enable future generations. Women have participated in the punk scene as lead singers, instrumentalists, as all-female bands, zine contributors and fashion designers. Bands Include: Debby Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Exene Cervenka, Wendy O Williams, Annabelle Lwin, Souxsie Sioux, Dale Bozio, Terri Nunn, Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox, Belinda Carlisle, Poly Styrene, Ari Up, Joan Jett and Lita Ford

Legendary LA punk band X gave us the surprise release with Alphabetland, their first album in 27 years, and first with the original lineup in 35 years. John Doe speaks with Kyle Meredith about what it took to get the band back in the studio, their ensuing tradition of writing about culture on the edge and moments of crisis, and taking on class divide and gentrification. The singer/bassist also describes why the band used a racial slur in their landmark debut Los Angeles as a stand against racism, and why they don’t sing that word now. Doe goes on to talk about how he and co-vocalist Exene Cervenka influence each other, how a trio of older cuts made the album, and what the future of X may look like.
There have been, so far, only two positives from this pandemic that I can see. One, Zoom technology has finally lead to the long delayed question, “Wait, all this time I could have been doing your podcast from my house???” Turns out yes! I don't see that going to the how we did it, “In The Before Times” anytime soon. The second cool thing has been the release of ALPHABETLAND by X. John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake formed X in the heyday of the late '70's LA punk scene. Their first album, Los Angeles, was released in 1980, and they quickly made an indelible mark on American music. I love ‘em and I always have. Now I had heard, being a fan and all, that they were recording some stuff, and I naturally assumed it was a one-off for a soundtrack or somesuch. But them, on the 40th anniversary of the release of Los Angeles, Bandcamp announced that the album ALPHABETLAND was available for immediate download. The huh the whaaaaa? So I bought it, sat down to listen. And I knew it would be good. But, you know, it's their first album in 27 years. I was prepared to grade on a curve. No need. It. Blew. My. Socks off. From the first cut to the last, it is a 27 minute punk rock fist to the solar plexus. tt starts out great, it never lets up and it ends with a flourish. Now many of you may recall that last year Mr. Doe and our mutual friend Tom De Savia were kind enough to invite me to moderate the panel for the book More Fun In The New World, which is the second installment of their two part oral history of LA Punk, the forst being Under The Big Black Sun, both available where fine books are sold. Tom was kind enough to make a call and I am very happy to say we have John Doe and DJ Bonebrake on the podcast today to talk about the album. So let's get right to it. https://DanaGould.com
Debut album from seminal Los Angeles band
This week on Bathroom Break Podcast, my guest is actor and musician London May. London is a highly regarded musician, best known as drummer and bassist with legendary singer Glenn Danzig's seminal goth punk group Samhain. During his long and continuing music career London's playing has been featured on over 30 releases and he has performed with such popular artists as Tiger Army, Son Of Sam (with Davey Havok of AFI), Lol Tolhurst (of The Cure), Lee Ving (of FEAR), Pat Smear (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Exene Cervenka (of X), Dag Nasty, Cold Cave, acclaimed artist Doug Aiken, Boredoms, Reptile House, Jackass star Chris Pontius, Rikk Agnew (Christian Death), and Distorted Pony. In 2016 Cleopatra Records released "Devilution: The Early Years," a deluxe retrospective CD/LP of London's earliest recordings and in 2017 he joined the legendary Black Metal group, Ritual. Raised in Baltimore, Maryland, London May began his acting career early in Baltimore's renowned Children's Theater Association. After a long break to pursue a burgeoning and successful music career, London returned to acting in 2010, studying comedy improv at The iO West and classic theater with Uranium Madhouse, where he made his Los Angeles stage debut in "The Duchess Of Malfi." He was also cast in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises," co- starred in the pilot episode of Ron Howard's "The Great Escape", and "Cold Sweat", a short directed by James Cameron's DP Paul Babin. Since then London has been busy with roles on The Disney Channel, Discovery Channel, Oxygen Channel, TNT, as well as leading roles in numerous films and stage productions (most notably in "Saw" director Darren L. Bousman's acclaimed "The Tension Experience.") London is also a sought after music video actor and he has been seen over 50 million times in various videos from Hilary Duff, Aimee Mann, American Football, Strung Out, et al. Tosh & Kimley discuss "Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk" by John Doe with Tom DeSavia and friends. Having both experienced the L.A. Punk scene firsthand, we found this to be a nostalgic and at times underwhelming look back at a scene that defied definition with bands ranging from the pure pop of the Go-Go’s to the hardcore thrashing of Black Flag. So what is L.A. Punk? We discuss both the Hollywood and Latin influences unique to the L.A. scene as well as the strong graphic visuals and DIY aesthetic that permeated all aspects of the scene. Contributors to the book include Exene Cervenka of X, Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go’s, Mike Watt of the Minutemen, and Henry Rollins to name just a few. Theme music: "Behind Our Efforts, Let There Be Found Our Efforts" by LG17
Most likely you know London May for his work with Samhain, the legendary, genre-defining band that Glenn Danzig formed after the demise of the Misfits. May has been busy all these years playing with everyone from Exene Cervenka to Cold Cave to as well as death rock icon Rikk Agnew. You may not have known about his acting career where he has been amassing a respectable number of credits in film, TV and on the stage. His new film project is Brutal Realty, a dark horror-comedy where he stars as The Summoner, a frustrated black metal drummer looking for a career change. On today's episode, I get to learn from someone who had created some of the most influential music at the dawn of L.A.'s punk era. Though, not thrilled to be labelled as punk, EXENE CERVENKA is proud of her 40 year run as a founding member of the band X. She graciously shared some of her experiences with me, even if I was rushing the interview a bit. Her sensibility and wisdom are a combination of out-of-the-box and traditional. Definitely worth a listen, especially her advice at the end!(From 11-20-17)http://www.xtheband.com

X recorded four classic albums in a row starting with 1980’s Los Angeles. A band that truly took the strongest elements of each of its members, with John Doe’s golden voice to Exene Cervenka’s poetic lyrics, Billy Zoom’s rockabilly guitar and DJ Bonebrake’s perfect backbeat they came fully formed on their debut. It’s one of our all-time favorites. We break down each of it’s nine tracks. Today's Guest: John Doe, singer, co-founder, X, author, Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with John Doe by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of aging punks who no longer take pride in torn fishnet stockings and who are using safety pins in ways they never dreamed of in 1978 … in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk by John Doe with Tom DeSavia and Friends. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! John Doe and Exene Cervenka probably never dreamed, when they met at a Venice, California, poetry workshop in 1976, that one day they would be regarded as the core of a musical movement that shook, stirred and ripped corporate rock. I didn’t say they ultimately prevented its rise – I wish they had – but as co-founders of the LA punk band X, they built one of the first bulwarks against the tide of homogenized rock ‘n’ roll. JOHN DOE podcast excerpt: "X — our music — was always accessible. We weren’t trying to piss people off; we just did it naturally. There was no ‘marketing’; the term barely existed. The way you were DIY in those days was you went out, met people, lived your life, did your thing. I have no regrets; that’s the way you get cancer." The Westerner by John Doe. Order or download your copy today by clicking on the CD cover above! And even if youth culture didn’t ultimately heed their warnings of what lay ahead, Doe and Cervenka left us a legacy of Americana, rockabilly and rawness that stands up to whatever today’s generation of next big things might offer. More Fun in the New World by X (Expanded and Remastered Edition). Order your copy today by clicking on the album cover above![ The LA punk scene – fortified with nutrients that included X, Black Flag, The Germs, The Blasters, Los Lobos, and yes, even The Go-Go’s – was a regional reflection of what was happening all over the world in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Manhattan had its Ramones, Television and the New York Dolls; London produced the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Madness. It was an era that captured what rock ‘n’ roll should be: revolutionary, off-putting, controversial, against-the-grain. JOHN DOE podcast excerpt: "(X's 2016 appearance on NPR's 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross) was not the first time people have tried to explain X's harmony in somewhat strange or even a backhanded compliment. Exene didn't know traditional harmony. She would get to that at times, then she would stray. She just sang what she heard." Doe captures the LA punk sound in his new book, Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk, which he wrote and edited with Tom DeSavia, and essays contributed by Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Jane Weidlin and Charlotte Caffrey of The Go-Gos, Dave Alvin of The Blasters, Robert Lopez – El Vez – of The Zeros, and his long-time musical partner and former domestic partner, Exene Cervenka. (And yes, I won’t miss an opportunity to point out that Exene grew up here in St. Petersburg.) The book is a great companion piece to Legs McNeil’s Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk. In addition to his new book, Doe is promoting a new album, The Westerner, which vocals from Blondie’s Debbie Harry on the song “Go Baby Go.” Singing and Playing: John Doe & Exene Cervenka. From John Doe’s website: John Doe was born in 1977 when he arrived in Los Angeles. His previous life in Tennessee, Wisconsin & Baltimore was a great & fertile time but new music and social changes led him to events that created a life in art. He graduated from Antioch College in Baltimore in 1975, worked as a roofer, aluminum siding mechanic, and ran a poetry reading series. Ms. Meyers was his landlord in the rural black community of Simpsonville , MD. John met Exene Cervenka at the Venice poetry workshop Nov 1976 and he started working with Billy Zoom around the same time. When DJ Bonebrake joined X in mid-1977 the line up was complete. They released six studio records, five or six singles and one live record from 1978-1993. Five of X’s records have been re-issued along with two compilations. The Unheard Music documents their lives and progress as a band from 1980-83. In 2009 the film was included in the Sundance UCLA Archive of greatest films of all time. They appeared several times on American Bandstand, Solid Gold and David Letterman. As one of the last original punk rock bands standing, they continue to tour. The day that X played a free noontime concert in Fullerton, CA, they caused Orange County’s greatest high school truancy rate to date. In 1988 John started a family and lived in the Tehachapi Mountains, near the “Grapevine” of Highway 5, which separates southern and central California. He has recorded 8 solo records w/ numerous renowned singers and players, more recently including Patty Griffin, Dan Auerbach, Aimee Mann, Don Was, Kathleen Edwards and Greg Liesz. He has appeared in over 50 films and television productions, with some of his most notable roles in Road House, Georgia, Roadside Prophets, Great Balls of Fire, Pure Country and Roswell. He continues to act these days but more sporadically as his touring schedule has become more demanding. Other musical side projects include work with the Knitters, Jill Sobule and The Sadies. He continues to write poetry and has even taught workshops from time to time. He currently lives north of San Francisco, California. Monsters of Talk, Margaret Cho and Jim Short chat with the amazing Exene Cervenka of X
Exene is a singer, artist and poet whose work traverses virtually every aspect of those disciplines. Best known as the singer for X, one of the leaders of the late-'70s/early-'80s California punk explosion, Exene Cervenka has also issued solo albums, launched several side bands (The Knitters), and penned books. X just announced plans to join their east coast comrades, BLONDIE, as a Special Guest on their fall U.S. “No Principals Tour.” Set to kick off September 5th, the bands will hit U.S cities including Atlantic City, Washington, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta and Philadelphia before wrapping October 4th in New York City at Roseland Ballroom. Three decades after the inception of X, songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive now as they were in 1977. The original line-up of X remains John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom, and D.J. Bonebrake. John Doe found her in Venice Beach at a poetry reading. He liked her poems so much he offered to perform them in his band. The poet, Exene Cervenka, had just moved to town from Florida and she told him, no offense, but if anyone was gonna perform her poems, it would be her, and she soon ended up in the band. The band’s early albums, LOS ANGELES (1980), produced by Ray Manzarek of the Doors, WILD GIFT (1981), and UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN (1982) explored dark love and an even darker L.A. with the unflinching eye of a Raymond Chandler novel. Doe and Cervenka would marry and later divorce, but they’d always remain soulmates. As they released each ensuing album, MORE FUN IN THE NEW WORLD (1983) and AIN'T LOVE GRAND (1985), the band continued to grow sonically and politically, fearlessly mixing genres without ever losing its center.
