Since October 2023, Palestine solidarity activists have faced a climate of McCarthyist repression, and all signs point to the incoming Trump administration escalating that campaign to silence the anti-genocide movement. Trump's cabinet appointees and supporters have embraced plans to revoke visas of pro-Palestine student organizers, sue colleges to ensure they crack down on protesters, subject anti-Zionist students to FBI questioning, and more—all in the name of fighting antisemitism. In this episode, associate editor Mari Cohen and senior reporter Alex Kane join Emma Saltzberg, US strategic campaigns director for Diaspora Alliance, and Dylan Saba, a staff attorney at Palestine Legal and a contributing writer at Jewish Currents, to discuss the possible shape of the Trump repression regime. We discuss the use of civil rights law to quash student protest, the Heritage Foundation's unnerving “Project Esther” blueprint for suppressing the Palestine solidarity movement, and Congressional attempts to attack the nonprofit status of anti-Zionist groups. We also analyze the multiple right-wing approaches at play—including the distinct but sometimes overlapping “anti-discrimination” and “anti-terrorism” paradigms—and consider possibilities for mobilizing a broader liberal-left coalition to oppose these strategies. The team began following Chrastil shortly before she became pregnant through in vitro fertilization. During the pregnancy and for two years after she gave birth, they continued doing MRI brain scans and blood tests to see how her brain changed. During this time, Chrastil's sex hormones, like estrogen, increased and decreased. Some of the changes continued past pregnancy. Emily Jacobs is with the University of California, Santa Barbara and was also a co-writer of the study. Jacobs said earlier studies had taken scans of the brain before and after pregnancy. But she said, none had shown changes in the brain as they were taking place. Unlike past studies, this one centered on many inner areas of the brain as well as the cerebral cortex, the outermost area, said Joseph Lonstein. He is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at Michigan State University and was not involved in the research. Lonstein said it is “a good first step to understanding much more about whole-brain changes that could be possible in a woman across pregnancy and postpartum.” Research in animals has linked some brain changes with qualities that could help the animal care for an infant. The new study does not deal with what the changes mean in terms of human behavior. However, Lonstein said that it does describe changes in brain areas involved in social cognition, or thinking. This is how people act with others -- for example, how they understand their thoughts and feelings. The researchers have partners in Spain, and they are developing what they call the Maternal Brain Project. The Ann S. Bowers Women's Brain Health Initiative and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative support the project. The researchers say they hope scientists can use findings from more than one woman to predict problems such as postpartum depression. “There is so much about the neurobiology of pregnancy that we don't understand yet,…” Jacobs said. “关于怀孕的神经生物学,我们还不了解很多,……”雅各布斯说。 She added that this is not because women and pregnancy are too complex. More is not known about pregnancy and the brain, she said, because “biomedical sciences have historically ignored women's health.”

Boundaries isn't a new word, but during my conversation with Dr. Emily Jacobs, you can see boundaries with a NEW perspective. "Is your boundary worth your self-respect or is it not?"Dr. Emily Jacobs is an author, speaker, nurse, wife, mother, and Founder of Empowered Moms - a community where we raise the bars for mothers who know they are worthy of more, to overcome fear and guilt, break cycles, and pursue dreams beyond motherhood. With over 20 years of healthcare in nursing and corporate leadership experience, Emily started her endeavor coaching healthcare providers and moms ready to up-level life, create healthy boundaries, recognize toxicity, and recover from their burnout stories.Setting healthy boundaries in motherhood is an act of self-care and can honestly be downright uncomfortable. By embracing these boundaries, moms cultivate an environment where their worthiness isn't tied solely to giving endlessly...but also to acknowledge their needs and well-being. We want to model for our children the importance of self-respect and balance laying the groundwork for a future where peace and fulfillment aren't sacrificed for the sake of others.CONNECT WITH GUEST:http://empoweredmoms.co@dremilyjacobsCONNECT WITH HOST:Website: www.mamayouredoinggreat.comIG: @kendahlyanezWant to get connected with other mamas like you?Join the CommunityText the word WELCOME to 855.486.5757 or sign-up HERE to get a weekly encouragement text delivered straight to your phone!Conference Info: Text the word CONFERENCE to 855.486.5757 or mamayouredoinggreat.com/conference

Dr. Emily Jacobs is an Associate Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences and the director of the Ann S. Bowers Women's Health Initiative at University of California, Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, and her BA in Neuroscience from Smith College. Prior to UCSB, she was an instructor at Harvard Medical School and at the Department of Medicine/Division of Women's Health at Brigham & Women's Hospital.  In this episode we discuss the pioneering work of Dr. Jacobs and her group in leveraging brain imaging, computation, and endocrine approaches to deepen our understanding of the influence of sex hormones on the central nervous system across spatial and temporal scales. She discusses her group's work using structural and functional neuroimaging methods to explore how the brain changes in response to endogenous hormonal changes, such as across the menstrual cycle, during menopause, or across pregnancy, as well as to exogenous hormones via oral hormonal contraceptives. Through the Ann S. Bowers Women's Health Initiative, Dr. Jacobs and her group are working towards creating a population-level brain imaging dataset to advance our understanding of women's brain health across the lifespan.   Dr. Jacobs also shared her journey into neuroscience research, her thoughts on how science can inform public policy, and talked about her groups' efforts to improve girls' representation in STEM by partnering with K-12 groups. This work was featured in the book STEMinists: The Lifework of 12 Women Scientists and Engineers.  At OHBM 2023, Dr. Jacobs will highlight the power of sex steroid hormones and the role that they play in shaping the brain over multiple timescales, drawing attention to some of the reasons why it has taken the field so long to focus on women's brain health. Sometimes, it feels like all you have time for is your medical training as if your life completely revolves around your coursework and call schedule. And often times, it does. Schedules are determined by the rotation your own, upcoming exams, and that 'lovely' call schedule that interferes with your sleep. (Wait, what even is sleep?) It can be hard to carve out time for anything outside of medicine, which leads to the question: Is it possible to be more than a doctor or is that all you have time for? Dr. Emily Jacobs is an Obstetrics & Gynecology resident who is BUSY! When she's not in the OR or seeing consults, she's taking care of her 18 month old son. How does she balance being a doctor and a mom? How does she not get behind in her surgical training? Shouldn't you wait until AFTER your training to start a family? You shouldn't have to justify how you want to live your life, but in this field, we can sometimes feel judged . . . This is a good one.
