In today's episode, Shelby sits down with Kris Christie, a recent graduate of The Nurse Coach Residency program, to hear her inspiring story of becoming a board-certified nurse coach while working full-time as a public health nurse.Kris became a nurse in her late 40s after working as a caregiver and discovering a passion for healthcare. She holds a Master's in Nursing (Clinical Nurse Leader track) from USF and has spent six years as a public health nurse. She also serves as an administrator for an adult day healthcare program and runs a music-filled, three-dog household. We talk about:How Kris came to nursing in her late 40s and why she was drawn to preventative medicine and chronic disease managementHer experience hiring a nurse coach in 2022 — and why it changed her life personally more than professionallyThe "victim mindset" and perfectionism patterns she recognized in herself (and now sees in her clients)Why she specifically wanted a nurse coach — not just any life coachHow she managed 8–12 hours per week of coursework on top of a full-time job and a packed personal lifeThe moment she realized she was "being selfish" by not offering her coaching services to people who were waiting for themHer sliding scale model: charging market rate for 80% of clients, sliding scale for 20% — so no one is excludedBreaking through the belief that offering your services = bothering peopleWhy her strong community roots led to fast referrals and organic client growthHer #1 piece of advice to other nurse coaches: your future self can't emerge if you're blocking her with old beliefsWatch the full episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/y5PjuhmPnXMMentioned in this episode:Cohort 7https://www.nurselifecoachacademy.com/

In this conversation with Shelby, Melissa shares the deeply personal journey that led her toward nurse coaching, spirituality, and building a business rooted in genuine human connection.Together, they unpack the fear of being seen, the vulnerability of inviting people into coaching, and the surprising healing that can happen when nurses finally feel heard themselves. In this episode, we talk about:Leaving a misaligned nursing career after 22 yearsThe moment Melissa realized she couldn't keep doing things the same wayWhy spirituality and purpose became central to her healing journeyThe vulnerability of coaching friends, coworkers, and family membersThe difference between “cold” marketing and leading with real connectionFear, uncertainty, and building a business without guaranteed outcomesBurnout, grief, and the emotional weight nurses carry without debriefingHow nurse coaching creates space for deeper healing and human connectionMelissa's story is an honest reminder that sometimes the discomfort we feel is pointing us toward something more aligned. Hi Nurse friend, What happens when chronic pain, burnout, and nervous system dysregulation start stealing your ability to feel — not just physically, but emotionally and intimately? In this powerful episode, I sit down with Honey Hull, NP, a pain and sex coach who understands firsthand what it's like to live in a body shaped by stress, trauma, and exhaustion. Honey shares her personal story of burnout and chronic pain, and how it led her to explore the deep connection between the brain, body, and nervous system. Honey Hull is a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Coach, and the founder of Small Steps Equals Big Changes. She has a unique and vital specialty: helping people with chronic pain have better sex. After experiencing her own burnout working in high-volume pain clinics, Honey realized that pills and procedures weren't enough to heal the whole person. She now uses a holistic approach to help clients gently retrain their pain pathways, turning down the body's 'false alarm' signals. Honey is dedicated to helping you move past fear so you can rediscover safety, connection, and pleasure in your body. In this episode, Honey offers practical, compassionate tools to restore body trust, improve sexual intimacy, and elevate overall quality of life — especially for nurses and healthcare professionals living under chronic stress. "...we sell hope, because lots of times patients will come to us, they've got the med list this long, and they just think it's going to keep getting longer. We let them know that this is not what it has to continue being. We can actually make changes, and lifestyle medicine providers will, as appropriate, de-prescribe or decrease the dose on these medications. And from the Nursing perspective, it's about being very specific, so making the recommendations instead of saying, you know, eat more fruits and vegetables. You know, well, what's realistic for you at this time? What are you ready to do? So Nurse Coaches are the best at this because we're already used to being able to assess where the client is and what they're ready to make a move on." ~Karen Laing DNP, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, DipACLM, HWMC-BC, CHES, FPCNAAh-Ha MomentsExplore how Lifestyle Nursing and Integrative Nurse Coaching blend the art and science of Nursing to prevent, and even help reverse chronic disease with evidence-based lifestyle interventions.Learn the six pillars of lifestyle medicine:  sleep, stress, movement, nutrition, social connection, and avoiding risky substance, and how Lifestyle Nursing makes them practical and doable for real patients and real Nurses.Hear how Nurses can use a Lifestyle Nursing framework to “sell hope,” collaborate with patients, and confidently stay within scope while talking about food, movement, and behavior change.Discover how Integrative Nurse Coaching + Lifestyle Nursing give Nurses structure, language, and heart-centered tools to support patients, communities, and themselves.Feel inspired as Karen reminds us that Nurses are powerful, trusted advocates who can model lifestyle change and help transform a broken healthcare system from the inside out.Links and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastLifestyle Nursing: A Lifestyle Medicine Framework for Nurses courseFunctional Nursing: A Functional Medicine Framework for Nurses courseFunctional Nursing + Lifestyle Nursing Dual Certificate PathwayLifestyle Nursing bookHealth Promotion and Disease Prevention for Advanced Practice bookKaren's emailIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. "A lot of what we do is give patients hope. Give patients hope and listen to them. And that, in itself, is so healing. I think it's so healing and transformative, ...even if they don't get to where they were before, they become the best version of themselves that they can be." ~Elizabth Sult BSN, RN, NC-BC"In conventional medicine, the question is, what's the diagnosis? And once you know the diagnosis, then there's sort of these algorithms that, you try to see if they help. But in functional medicine, once you understand what's the diagnosis, the question is, really, why? Why do you have the diagnosis? And that's where these antecedents, triggers, mediators, all these kinds of ideas come from— to get to the why. But I like to say that the antecedents, triggers and mediators are kind of like Einstein's Theory of Relativity, right? Because an antecedents from one frame might be a trigger from another frame. And so, you know, getting to the real root cause. You might think, Oh, I got to the molecular medicine cause. But actually, it was a spiritual mal-alignment that caused the biochemical issue, because it caused all this stress and strain and all that trickles down to the molecular medicine."  ~Dr. Tom Sult MD, IFMCPAh-Ha MomentsFunctional Nursing asks a different question: Not just what's the nursing diagnosis? But, why is this happening?  And what does this body need to heal? It's about raising wellness so illness has less space to take holdThe Functional Nurse listens for patterns, stories, and turning points. Elizabeth and Tom highlight how powerful it is when Nurses can really listen, and help patients connect the dots in their own health journeyFunctional Nursing and Integrative Nurse Coaching are a natural fit. When Nurses combine root-cause thinking with coaching presence, patients feel seen, supported, and empowered to take steps that fit into their busy livesThe nervous system matters deeply. After the excitement of becoming a Board Certified Nurse Coach, many coaches hit an unexpected wave of uncertainty. In this episode, Laura and Shelby break down the messy middle that happens right after certification: the “am I doing this right,” the fear of visibility, and the pressure to suddenly have everything figured out. They share what actually matters in these early stages, why slow and steady progress builds long term success, and how to create momentum without burning out or expecting perfection. This conversation is grounding, practical, and a permission slip to breathe, soften, and take the next small step instead of trying to leap into a fully formed business overnight.Things to remember:Certification is the beginning, not the final destination. Feeling uncertain afterward is completely normal. You do not need a perfect plan. You just need consistent action and willingness to learn as you go.Wobbliness is part of the process. Confidence comes from reps, not readiness.Visibility grows slowly. You do not have to show up everywhere at once.Community support matters. You build faster and stay grounded when you are not doing it alone. You already have what you need to start. Wellness Nurse Revolution: Alison Boser RN “Everybody wants their employees to be healthy, but being healthy…What does that mean? And that means different things to different people. It's not one size fits all. It's a really flexible, definition based on your stage of life, where you are. And I think an awareness of wellness as this sort of amorphous different things at different times for people would be fantastic. I think wellness, like capital W wellness, has a bit of a negative connotation that, you must be very thin and muscular and do hot yoga or something, but that's not it. You know, it's like walking your dog. It's your grandma who can carry your groceries into her house at 95 and she gets them after she goes and plays cards! It's strong communities. And she said, ‘I had never thought about him being an organ donor, like I never thought about that process.'And she said, ‘…and it wasn't until I heard about your story that I said, Yes, I want him to be an organ donor, and he would be okay with that'. "In the Nurse coaching certificate course, we definitely learned about mindfulness. And you know, that sounds maybe trivial to somebody who's not familiar with Nurse coaching. Sure, we know mindfulness is research fact and very effective, but it just goes so much deeper than that. You know, we don't often as Nurses, allow ourselves enough time, time with our patients, time with ourselves, time to breathe, time to drink water, to take a rest, so allowing time and space to transpire, to let our bodies catch up with ourselves, to really hear what our patients are saying, you know, or what they're not saying.Time is... I really think mindfulness and time are so connected that we can be mindful, intentionally mindful, if we allow ourselves more time. So that is a big one. You know, I think that's a big one in this busy healthcare space, allowing more time or creating a way to allow for more of that." ~Maggie Gardner RN, BSN, HWNC-BC, CH-CAh Ha MomentsAs Nurses, we can do things to numb our emotional experiences- social media, alcohol, drugs, ignoring the things we experience - this is not serving you, it never has- maybe there is another way...There are so many pathways you can choose to take in your professional and personal life- go in the direction that lights you up- that is the best way to go- even if it's scaryYour sensitive heart is exactly what is needed to shift the way the healthcare system is being run!  You are exactly where you need to be, right now. “…the problem and what is driving Nurses from the profession in droves like never seen before— please don't talk to me about attrition, well, yes, that's a factor—the world is hemorrhaging Nurses. And that's a quote from Dr. Terrance Hill, medical sociologist, the world is hemorrhaging Nurses and the root cause for that, it's not about burnout. And please stop gaslighting Nurses about burnout resilience. Please just stop. The reason.  The root cause, according to my research, five years, four disciplines, is avoidable, Nurse Specific Traumatization. And this would be this historical trauma, where we are unknowingly transmitting." ~ Dr. Lorre Laws PhD, RN Ah Ha MomentsAll Nurses have, (or will have) experienced traumaEnough blame on Nurses. Healthcare system, wake up!  Instead of putting the blame on your employees, let's address the systemic problems that are causes of avoidable traumas… understaffing, bullying, violence, not addressing high acuity, lack of resources and still demanding exceptional care and more…Thinking that solving burnout will fix all Nursing problems is all wrong, what if what we're experiencing is because of trauma exposure? That the actions and responses we see in ourselves, and our colleagues are because the traumas are being stored in our bodies, minds and spiritsWe must learn about how trauma can and has affected us, and make this common language, and learn how to help ourselves so we can begin to heal and insulate our nervous systems from further injuryLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastNurse Trauma Healing PodcastEpisode 79: Together We Can Stop Shame and Blame in Nursing with Kristy MeyerNursing Our Healer's Heart bookLorre's websiteDr Karen Foli Middle Range Theory of Nurses' Psychological TraumaIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. 81: Building a Business as a New Nurse Coach- Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BC “As a new business owner in the community, it's just been one learning opportunity after another, and truly just like a practice of vulnerability, of showing up and putting yourself out there and really doing the best I can to be detached from the outcome, which is what they teach us as Nurse Coaches as well.  Showing up day in and day out, and knowing that, you're gonna find things that you don't know how to do, you're going to find that there are questions you didn't even know were questions. And just having to come back to the attitude that, everything is figure out-able.” ~Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BCAh Ha MomentsIt's absolutely vulnerable to be a new business owner, especially because Nurses are never taught how to be entrepreneurs. And yet, we can still show up and be open to the possibilities!Everything is ‘figure-out-able'.  And we can ask for help, and be detached from the outcomes, as best we canBe clear on your personal vision and values, as those will be instrumental in you showing up for the world in your true, authentic way, and your ability to align with how you are being of serviceBegin with one step at a time.  You don't have to do it all right away.  Find the things you think will have the most impact and begin there. "Nurses are so well suited for psychedelics, and we bring so many skill sets that other disciplines don't, and I don't think any one discipline has it all, but I think we bring a really important piece of the puzzle. And if you think about it, Nurses are with patients in non ordinary states of consciousness, sometimes every day.  If you're a hospice Nurse or working in labor and delivery, if you're in Psych, if you're working with patients, you know, coming in and out of anesthesia, patients with delirium. So many reasons why somebody could be an altered state or even just shock trauma. You know, emergency Nursing. And Nurses often are with patients for prolonged periods of time. You know, offering their caring, healing presence." ~ Dr. Stephanie Van Hope DNP, RN, NC-BCAh-Ha MomentsPsychedelic medicine is becoming more mainstream, and Nurses are stepping up willingly to lead and support their patients, clients and communitiesNurses are perfectly aligned to lead and work in psychedelic medicine as they are often with patients in altered states of consciousness throughout a shiftSacred medicine, also connected to entheogens, because they can help create a link to God within or to experience God within and the use of rituals and traditions to connect with the DivineNurses, you can absolutely take your passions and your knowledge and use both to create courses, programs, concepts and ideas that you know in your heart and will support fellow humans (and yourself) on life's journeyLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastIntegrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program Return to Roots course pageAJN Psychedelics Article:  Penn, A., Dorsen, C. Together We Can Stop Shame and Blame in Nursing-Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights“I feel like self-care is often discussed in a way like, well, you're burned out, it's because you're not doing self-care, or you're burned out, that means you're not resilient. And I feel like there's a lot of shame and blame in there, when really, we work in really tough environments, and we see really hard things, and a lot of times we have a lot of defensive mechanisms, I believe, like shielding ourselves from that, not feeling some of the feelings, and that's a good skill at times, because that's what you need to do to get through your work shift. But internalizing a lot of feelings and not taking care of your own basic needs just leads to a lot of health problems for us as Nurses.” ~Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BCAh Ha MomentsShame and blame are evident in discussions about self-care.  Like the things you're doing daily to help yourself aren't good enough.  It's important to change that narrativeIt's easier for Nurses to receive assistance when they can connect with a fellow Nurse, especially for health and wellness coachingIt can be difficult for Nurses to identify they are burned out and need help, because they are sooo good at caring for othersYou are powerful beyond measure and have the capacity to healLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy INCCP CourseIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastCultivating Shifts Integrative Health Nurse Coaching and EducationKristy's emailKristy's Facebook*****Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Thank you for listening.
