Buckle up because this week on Shoot The Hostage, we're hitting the track with a film that definitely ran out of gas at the box office! Dan and Sarah dive headfirst into the glorious box-office flop that is Driven (2001) We brake down the bewildering plot involving characters played by Kip Pardue, Burt Reynolds, Estella Warren, Gina Gershon (making her second appearance on the podcast) and Robert Sean Leonard. We pull back the curtain on the film's massive budget, chaotic production (including casting just 3 days before shooting), and truly head-scratching moments that lead to "first day on Earth performances". If you're desperately searching for a podcast covering movies that flopped at the box-office, diving into guilty pleasure movies, or are specifically curious about movies about motorsports and racing, especially a spectacularly bad racing movie, then this is your checkered flag! We tackle everything from the absurd dialogue ("What am I, a piece of wood?" and "You old fish") to Renny Harlin's questionable directing methods. Find out why even Sylvester Stallone himself might regret making this one. In this episode, expect: An apology from Dan (it's apology season, after all) for introducing Sarah to this particular film. Analysis of the film's inaccuracies, from unrealistic race tactics to physics-defying stunts Commentary on the film's portrayal of women and its overall testosterone driven nature A brief tangent on mammals Ideas for how a Driven remake could actually cross the finish line successfully Season 10 runs until May 26th with 10 episodes this time Would you like to see the full lineup for season 10? Writer and producer, Cynthia Posner, took off for Mexico during the pandemic to get out of the fast pace Los Angeles life. Undateable John starring Estella Warren and John Philbin (EP. 62 on this podcast), is a romantic comedy that flew under the radar in 2019. We loved Cyn's dialogue and wit, so we scheduled a screening coming up on February 2, 2024, with John Philbin in attendance. Witness us go hopping mad as we endure the cinematic queef that is Kangaroo Jack (2003). Don't tell Estella Warren we said that, her Rapsheetipedia page is longer than the list of the world's deadliest snakes indigenous to Australia. And much like the senseless reversal of those snakes waking hours in the Kangaroo Jack Universe (KJU), this film is the inverse of the comedy adventure it claims to be. So, join us on the long ramble across the Aussie Outback where we might discover why a film quintessentially exclusive of a character named Kangaroo Jack is titled as such.Music created by Jack Parsons.Follow us on Twitter and check out our YouTube channel.
This week, we thought we'd go all out by delivering our longest episode yet (5 whole hours!) on a film that added next to nothing to the careers of everyone involved and the larger franchise that bears its name: 2001's Planet of the Apes! Listen to us lose our collective minds over the recent phenomenon of speed watching, listening, living, etc. before we turn our existential crises into sincere enlightenment. Thankfully, the recent trailers for Ridley Scott's forthcoming films The Last Duel and House of Gucci restored our spirits. Finally, we walk through the nine circles of developmental Hell it took to see our mediocre subject film make its way onto cinema screens. Join us as we express what Tim Burton's varied career has meant to us over the years, defame the toxic existence of one Mark Wahlberg, and find genuine appreciation in this film's iteration of ape makeup while ascertaining no real reason why this movie was made other than the continual questing of Hollywood to make a buck above all else. Toby Keith fans may even find themselves shocked to see a special surprise awaiting them...Trust us when we say it's *all* here in this very special episode, one way or another. Boston-born, Canadian-based, actor, writer and comic, Bernard Robichaud, known to fans worldwide as Cyrus, the gun toting, drug dealing nemesis from the hit television series Trailer Park Boys, started his life in the spotlight as a sought after model. That is, until the day he crossed paths with a Toronto talent agent, who insisted he missed his calling and should try his hand at acting. With that advice in mind, Bernard enrolled in the Theatre Arts program at Dalhousie University and later honed his skills under the private tutelage of esteemed vocal coach Dorothy Ward, and later under the wings of award winning director Tom Kerr at the prestigious Neptune Theatre. Believe it or not, this athletic man who grew up playing hockey and basketball and today is an avid golfer was hired to voice the characters of both Robert and Becky in the CBC radio drama In Becky’s Name. Governor General Award winning playwright and author, Kent Stetson, took the liberty of contacting ACTRA on Bernard’s behalf, stating that anyone who could play a man and women on radio in their first performance deserved to be given their professional status…and he was, and he hasn’t looked back. His uncanny talent of being able to transform himself into a rough and tumble lowlife to a ruggedly handsome good guy has garnered Bernard a variety of most interesting roles over his career including performing alongside such Hollywood icons as James Caan and Kathy Bates. Most recently he was seen in Sea Change on Lifetime movies, based on New York Times best selling author Aimee Friedman, which everyone hopes will go to camera in the near future as a series. He also starred in Blue Seduction co-starring Billy Zane and Estella Warren, and American Sunset, co-staring with his friend, the late Corey Haim. Bernard also had a recurring role as Kirk in the hit Showcase TV series, Haven. Bernard was very unexpectedly diagnosed on Oct 6, 2017 with Prostate Cancer after a routine visit to the doctor. He is now cancer-free and is an advocate for the fight against cancer. Last week, Dustin and Mallie found the silver lining in one of the most depressing dramatic films ever. This time, they try it with the complete opposite: an anti-action action movie. In this week's episode, the gang enters the back half of their Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza with Tim Burton's depressingly terrible Planet of the Apes! Why not hire anybody besides Mark Wahlberg? Why are we still sending chimps into space in 2029? And what kind of a trampoline budget were they working with here? PLUS: Twilight Zone's greatest "secret robot" scenarios. Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. As the original Planet of the Apes franchise has moved from modern film into classic spectacle, Hollywood decides to reboot the series for a new generation of film goers. Thirty-two years since the Charlton Heston original classic, a reboot goes into production and is released in 2001 to great excitement. Tim Burton, the director of such genre favorites as Sleepy Hollow and Ed Wood, helms an ambitious remake starring Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, and the beautiful Estella Warren in a film that sadly disappoints both the younger audience and those who are fans of the original series. Though spectacular visually, the story arc would resonate with neither film critic nor filmgoer. Yet today, August 11, 2011, ten years after the first reboot Hollywood yet again brings to audiences a new version of the franchise, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Unlike the Tim Burton film, this new reboot focuses on an alternate timeline from the original following more the storyline of the fourth film of the original franchise Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (which starred Roddy McDowell and Ricardo Montalban). With new advances in science, apes are genetically altered in the attempts to cure Alzheimer’s disease with an unusual side effect, intelligence development within the chimpanzee. Starring James Franco, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis, and the beautiful Freida Pinto, fans of the original once more hope for a film that will not only blow them away visually but will have a story that will echo within today’s world. Dark Discussions finishes up their trilogy The Planet of the Apes retrospective. Philip and Mike discuss genetic engineering, both its potentials and dangers, and try to answer the question of what amount of intelligence within a creature would establish the beast to be considered more than just an animal. Such novels as Michael Crichton’s Next, Robin Cook’s Chromosome 6, H. G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Robert C. O’Brien’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH are brought into the topic. George A. Romero’s film Monkey Shines, Will Smith’s I Am Legend, and the new documentary Project Nim are discussed. Even the cartoon show Family Guy has some value to add to the dialogue with its talking dog Brian. No matter what one thinks, Rise of the Planet of the Apes may be just the starting point on subjects as diverse as stem cell research, cloning, and genetic engineering. Horror films may be nothing more than fiction yet science is so much more. Science is reality. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Starring Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes), Beauty and the Beast is not the traditional Disney fairy tale. In this gritty celebration of Valentine’s Day, a young Beauty (Warren) with a gift for healing helps a deformed Prince (Rhett Gilles, Wraiths of Roanoke) regain his throne and defeat the ruthless nobleman who wants to be king -- and then together they try to destroy a power-hungry witch. Beauty and the Beast was directed by David Lister and written by Gavin Scott. Warren's movies include Driven (2001) alongside Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds, Planet of the Apes (2001) directed by Tim Burton with Mark Wahlberg, Kangaroo Jack (2003) with Jerry O’Connell – all three films reaching #1 in their opening weekend at the Box Office. She also appeared in the critically acclaimed The Cooler (2003) with Alec Baldwin and William H Macy. Warren has appeared in That '70s Show as well as in Law & Order and its spin-off Law & Order: Special Victims Unit . She also appeared in Ghost Whisperer, in an episode entitled "On the Wings of a Dove", where she portrayed Alexis ("Lexi") Fogerty. In 2009 Warren has completed filming episodes of Mental for FOX Television Network and All Stars for ABC Network, the feature film Blue Seduction opposite Billy Zane, the feature film Transparency opposite Lou Diamond Phillips and is slated to start filming Devil’s Pride opposite Peter Fonda and Rosanna Arquette in 2010.
