Picture this: a quadriplegic man, a helper monkey, and a wild ride of unintended comedy and horror. How does a movie intended to terrify end up being a source of laughs? That's the burning question we're tackling this week on Screams & Streams as Sam, Mike, and Chad reminisce about George A. Romero's 1988 film "Monkey Shines." From bizarre tropes like "perfect life destroyed" to the questionable science and unforgettable lines such as the infamous "clinical c**t" insult, we dive into how this film has morphed from childhood fright to comedic treasure. And we've got just the thing to sip on while watching—a tropical-themed cocktail that'll make even the most intense scenes a bit more palatable.Join us as we journey through the film's rough edges, dissecting plot holes and gratuitous scenes that make "Monkey Shines" a cult classic for all the wrong reasons. Whether it's the laughable depiction of a car accident or the melodramatic interactions among characters, this movie offers endless fodder for humor. And let's not forget the unsettling dynamics between characters, with a particularly overbearing mother and a nurse who seems to have missed her empathy training. As we pick apart these jaw-dropping moments, we can't help but chuckle at how these peculiarities contribute to its lasting allure.Of course, no exploration of "Monkey Shines" would be complete without some juicy behind-the-scenes gossip. From Orion Studios' influence on the film's ending to the curious choice of a male monkey in a lead role, the production challenges are as captivating as the movie itself. We'll also dive into some trivia, like the strategic edits that shaped the narrative. Despite its mediocre box office against Tom Cruise's "Cocktail," this film remains etched in our memories, not for its scares, but for its endearing oddities and humor. Grab your popcorn and cocktail, and join us for a nostalgic yet hysterical ride through this unforgettable 80s flick. Head to www.screamsandstreams.com for more information related to our episode.

Being so closely related on the evolutionary scale, man has always been fascinated with primates and love putting them in films. They can be shown as cute or silly in roles played for humor (Right turn, Clyde), sent into space, spread diseases, or evolve beyond man into a dominate human species. They present a mystery to us, a link to what we may have been in the past and unknown potential of what they may be capable of. It is this mystery that can provide grounds for horror. Jerry & Matt look at two diverse examples of primates in horror with the iconic and transcendent King Kong, from 1933 and bio-engineered Ella in George Romero's Monkey Shines, from 1988.

Denne her bliver svær at overgå, folkens.

That's right, in the coming weeks, it's all about monkey business at Not A Bomb. This week, our focus is on the 1988 horror film (?) - “Monkey Shines.” Directed by horror trailblazer George A. Romero, “Monkey Shines” tells the story of a person with quadriplegia who develops an unexpected relationship with a monkey… or rather, a small ape. Throughout its two-hour runtime, Monkey Shines goes to great lengths not to frighten the audience. However, the plot will leave you pondering how frozen brain tissue and Gatorade can forge a telekinetic bond between a small ape and a quadriplegic. Oh, and we dive into one of the most peculiar sex scenes in film history. You simply have to listen to hear all about it.Monkey Shines is directed by George A. Romero and stars Jason Beghe, John Pankow, Kate McNeil, and Joyce Van Patten. We are back from Christina's Birthday week and we ain't monkey'n around... Well kind of.. It's an episode full of Monkey's really. This week we review a couple of films starring a few angry monkeys that murder... Starting with a movie called LINK (1986) about a circus Orangutan monkey that is getting pretty old and aggressive. When the Professor who hires a young student to look after him disappears. It's up to Jane (Elizabeth Shue) to make it out alive from LINK's "The Master of Fire". Then we get into our own MONKEY SHINES (1988) by George A. Romero. A movie about a man named Alan who's recently been disabled with Quadriplegia. When a close friend decides to gift him one of his Capuchin lab monkeys high on human DNA to help around the house. Things... or rather humans start to end up dead. Especially when they anger Alan. Is there a connection? Can Alan, a quadriplegic stop the madness before everyone he knows ends up dead? We dive into all of this hairy madness this week chock full of our special blend of bad humor and laughter. You won't want to miss an episode. EVER AGAIN! Join us! Special topics for your consideration include: when your phone's autofill function tries to predict "your thing," an unexpected sessy moment, having your directorial debut and your swan song be the same film (sorry Robert Englund), and a whole ass host of 1980s teen horror tropes: old teens, hot principals, religious moms, kids with insane names, movie punks (or at least punk-adjacent), evil quips, panty thefts & so much more!
