This episode tells the story of Amy and Tiger, two creatives who "met old" and wanted to start a family. With money constraints, they found their way to foster-to-adopt, and after an arduous fostering process, were able to adopt their daughter. We discuss so many topics on this episode:-The feeling of "otherness" that can sometime occur as an adoptive family. -Transracial adoption and as white people, some ways to support an African American child. -Tokenism and representation in the media.-Their long journey through the difficult foster care system. The stress and trauma, and how they fought through it. -Visitations, overnight visits and the delicate and sometimes confusing relationship with their daughter's birth family.-"Bird-nesting" and co-parenting amicably through divorceSince recording this episode, I wanted to share some resources on the topic of transracial adoption. As a transracial adoptive family ourselves, my husband and I are committed to continuing education on this topic, including listening to adult adoptees. -The family camp I refer to in the episode: Pact Family Camphttps://pactadopt.org/pact-camp/I have since learned there are many of these types of camp. This one was recommended by our Foster Family Agency, Extraordinary Families. -An excellent resource regarding hair care and maintenance for white parents with black children is Ms. Terria Roushun Epting. She has a book, a workbook and a course (that I'll be taking soon!). For all her offerings, visit her website https://terriaroushun.com/ and follow her on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/terriaroushun -To learn about the life and experience of a black woman adopted by white parents, her search to find her biological parents and why white people need to be educated on the transracial adoptive experience, read "You Should Be Grateful" by Angela Tucker . I listened to the audiobook, which she does a great job of narrating! She also has many other offerings, including a podcast, which are discoverable here:https://www.angelatucker.com/ Follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/angieadoptee/I'm sure there are many more valuable resources out there, so please don't hesitate to share them with me and our listeners. It is a lifelong education process. If you feel we've gotten anything wrong in this episode, please call us "in" and let us know how we can do better. I'm committed to learning and growing in this space, as well as educating others. Thanks!

What other people are saying:“Uniquely outstanding. No fluff and all substance. David does an outstanding job summarizing these biographies and hones in on the elements that make his subjects so unique among entrepreneurs. I particularly enjoy that he focuses on both the founder’s positive and negative characteristics as a way of highlighting things to mimic and avoid.”“Without a doubt, the highest value-to-cost ratio I’ve taken advantage of in the last year is the Founders podcast premium feed. Tap into eons of knowledge and experiences, condensed into digestible portions, for roughly the cost of a takeout meal. Highly, highly recommend.“I just paid for my first premium podcast subscription for Founders podcast. Learning from those who came before us is one of the highest value ways to invest time. David does his homework and exponentially improves my efficiency by focusing on the most valuable lessons.”“I haven’t found a better return on my time and money than your podcast for inspiration and time-tested wisdom to help me on my journey.“It is worth every penny. I cannot put into words how fantastic this podcast is. Just stop reading this and get the full access.”“Reading a biography is a privilege that condenses a life's journey, all its lessons, loves AND mistakes into 20 odd hours of reading. Here David condenses many of the best and intriguing Bios into 1-2 hours. Presented organically and thoughtfully with full book links and show notes for ease. Once again, Jim Prevor steps outside his usual produce industry pinnings and discusses transformative topics that affect us all. In this episode, the Perishable Pundit uncovers “untold stories” about Chadwick Boseman's close family ties, his support from his community and his own personal grit. In a world of the Black Lives Matter marches for policy changes and attitude shifts, the example of Chadwick Boseman stands to tell us a different story -- that success comes mostly from family and extended family and personal effort. If you really want to look below the surface, Chadwick's life is filled with extremely important lessons.

FOR SOME KIDS, BIRTHDAYS ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED. Imagine that. No presents. No birthday cake. No candles to blow out. No well wishes. No celebration. That didn’t sit well with Jaime Lehman so she decided to take action. Jaime founded For Goodness Cakes, a non-profit organization that matches volunteers to make and hand-deliver birthday cakes to foster children and at-risk youth on their special day. The mission at For Goodness Cakes is to give individual youth at least one special moment that is about them. By providing a child a treat made especially for them, it gives them some much needed time to not feel the increasing pressure of their socioeconomic situation, but rather help nurture optimism and confidence at a critical age. I am sure you will find the story of Jamie’s mission to spread love, joy and frosting just as inspiring as I did. Some of us used to sneak out to mom's closet and try on her shoes and clothes, pretending to be Cyndi Lauper-- this is what 'Entertaining Babies' is all about! How to use our inner (some would say: hidden) creativity during our time with our babies and toddlers. From the moment they open their eyes, bring out the Cyndi Lauper in you in order to stimulate them, create a vibe of music and laughter in the family without leaving your home! This episode is great for the winter season. Unless you are Lord Whatsisface of Downton Abbey, you're gonna have a pretty significant amount of time with your kid(s) from day one. When you're not changing diapers, feeding, bathing (and occasionally crying into your hands in the other room), how will you entertain and engage them during the period of their lives where they absorb the most? We interview Mark Reis, an entertainer himself - and a gay dad - about what he does. And, of course, we have no shortage of thoughts and opinions (oh, the opinions) of our own about what works.
