My husband says I'm forming bad habits in my kids and wearing myself out.”She's a devoted mom trying to show up with love—but when her child is falling apart, crying, throwing tantrums, or needing constant reassurance, she feels like she's emotionally drowning. Her natural response is to set more boundaries for her children to protect herself from burnout -- but is the best approach when YOU are the person who's the adult? If you've ever felt stuck between your own limits and your child's emotional needs, this conversation is for you.We explore how attachment parenting principles can help you stay emotionally grounded while building secure bonds—especially during challenging moments and phases. Does having children or being married make you more unhappy than single or childless individuals? Many people (rightly) say 'Yes'! That's why more and more people are choosing to remain single, to avoid long-term commitments, and to vow to never have children at all. Because it IS hard and often makes you 'unhappy'.But what if happiness is not the point of life? What if the challenges of marriage and parenting aren't something to avoid, but the very things that make life meaningful? In this episode, we dive into a conversation inspired by a Facebook post that sparked a debate on whether the struggles of raising children and maintaining a marriage are worth it. The Dennings explore the idea that, far from being reasons to quit, these challenges are paths to personal growth, fulfillment, and a more rewarding, meaningful (even if sometimes unhappy), life. They also challenge the modern trend of avoiding discomfort for the sake of comfort and convenience, instead suggesting that leaning into the struggles—whether it's raising kids or nurturing a relationship—is what leads to lasting satisfaction. In fact, just like any skill, marriage, and parenting require knowledge, practice, and the right tools to truly thrive. Not everyone should necessarily pursue marriage or parenthood, but if you choose that path, it's important to do it well. Developing the skills needed to navigate the challenges of family life is essential for creating a fulfilling and meaningful experience. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the chaos of family life, or if you're on the fence about whether marriage and family are right for you, this episode offers insights and encouragement to help you not just survive but thrive. "Is there room for doubt? Or are you always certain (in this podcast, etc) that your decisions/choices about how to navigate this life are the way everyone should also do things? Because if you are certain, that leaves no room for tolerance or unity, which isn't necessarily a good thing." In this episode, we discuss certainty and the role it plays in the choices we make and the lives we live. We are VERY CERTAIN about many things we talk about on this podcast, but is that always a good thing? A listener recently shared a thought-provoking perspective inspired by the movie The Conclave, where a cardinal gives a powerful speech on the dangers of certainty. Then, after watching our episode #276, they wondered if our confidence in our choices—whether in parenting, relationships, or personal development—leaves room for doubt or growth. They asked: “Is there room for ‘doubt,' or are you always ‘certain' that your way is the best for everyone?” Greg and Rachel Denning reflect on this powerful question in today's conversation. They explore the tension between certainty and doubt, how certainty can sometimes cause division (especially in religious contexts), and the importance of staying open-minded, even when you've found clarity in your own path. This episode is a candid discussion about balancing conviction with curiosity, and how we can learn from each other's experiences while still standing firm in our beliefs. The Denning's share how they navigate the challenges of life, understanding that certainty doesn't always have to mean rigid, and that doubt can be a healthy part of growth. In this thought-provoking episode of the Extraordinary Family Life podcast, hosts Greg and Rachel Denning explore the profound impact of societal systems on parenting and family life. They delve into the concept of “the matrix” — the conventional structures that shape education, success, and personal identity — and how these systems can keep families stuck in unproductive patterns, preventing them from creating an extraordinary, significant life. They emphasize the importance of fostering a strong foundation for children, focusing not just on academic success but on mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. They argue that success should not be confined to grades and jobs but redefined to prioritize happiness, autonomy, and resilience. Drawing on real-life examples, the Dennings highlight the critical role of habits, accountability, and a supportive environment in shaping a child's future. In this inspiring episode, hosts Greg and Rachel Denning delve into the philosophy of 'escaping the unhappy dream of our life' and creating a truly fulfilling life instead. They discuss why so many people are 'content' with the results they have instead of pursuing the results they really want. Creating a truly happy life requires deliberate choices and intentional actions. Hard work is required to achieve anything extraordinary. The difference is, with the right coaching and mentoring, you can learn to work hard with 'power tools' instead of doing everything 'by hand'. The Dennings also explore how divine discontent can fuel personal growth and transformation and can be the key to fulfillment. They highlight the importance of continuous effort in pursuing happiness and encourage listeners to reject mediocrity in favor of an extraordinary life. Because if they can do it, so can you, since they began their journey as completely 'normal' people. It's time to identify what you truly want and take the first steps (even baby steps) toward a life you love! Because of your podcasts and recommended reading I've realized that my husband needs physical intimacy more than I do, and I've tried to step up and make sure that his needs are met. When he's home, he's not home - he's on the computer playing games. When we are on a date, he's not on the date - he's looking at his phone. When we go on vacation together, he's not with me - he's on the iPad.  I've expressed my need for his attention, but I don't feel heard. Habits are deeply rooted (on both sides) and we fall into our same patterns of interaction. I have become more autonomous (which he hasn't liked because I'm less available). I've gone back to school (online), I go to the temple alone, I find my own projects to work on.  We recently went on trek (camping) where there was no cell phone or internet coverage. I had his undivided attention for one night before everyone else arrived, and it was wonderful - we talked like we did when we were dating and I didn't feel like an afterthought.  You asked for a list of things that bother your listeners about their marriages. This is at the top of my list. I don't want to be roommates with benefits (he gets sex, I am a financially well-kept woman). I want to be partners.”   Join Greg and Rachel as they explore the essential elements of a thriving marriage. They discuss the importance of identifying areas for improvement and making proactive changes rather than settling. If you're NOT a new parent, you still want to listen to this episode -- because it may help you to understand WHY you have the current relationship you do with your children and/or your spouse because of things that happened or did NOT happen during the baby and child-rearing phases! But this episode came in response to this question which we received: "My husband and I have been married for a little over two years and we are expecting our first baby in the Fall. We've both listened to and loved your podcast even before we were married. Now that we are about to become parents, we are relistening to your podcasts since they've taken on a decidedly new meaning and depth. Understandably, your podcasts talk a lot about older children, teenagers, and your adult children launching into successful lives. What I (wife) was wondering is if you could answer some questions about what it was like to become parents for the first time. I've listened to prominent speakers like Jordan Peterson talk about how wives are essentially "gone" from their husbands for up to six months after the birth of a baby due to the intense vulnerability and helplessness of the new infant as well as the healing mom needs to go through after giving birth. And, while the husband acts as protector of the mother's energy and sanity during these first crucial months, he will just have to be patient as he "waits for his wife to come back to him."First off, what does "gone from him" even mean? How did Rachel overcome the need to be the on-demand mom for so long without neglecting Greg? If she struggled, what did you do about it? My husband says he is not terribly worried about it and has told me to just take the birth and first few months as it comes — that I have his full permission to be there for the baby. However, the worried side of me won't seem to shut off because I don't want to be just the mother of his children, I want to be his wife first and foremost. Maybe six months doesn't sound like a long time to veterans, but it certainly sounds like a long time to essentially "clock out" of wifey duties.  In this episode, Greg and Rachel, parents of 7 children, discuss the challenges and dynamics of becoming new parents, particularly as it relates to intimacy between spouses. They emphasize the importance of understanding the physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. They also highlight the significance of this time meeting the needs of babies for their mental, emotional, and psychological development. Greg and Rachel stress the importance of support and communication between partners during this time and offer insights on creating a balance between parenting and maintaining a strong marital relationship. The conversation explores the challenges and strategies for maintaining intimacy and connection in a marriage after having a baby. They emphasizes the importance of intentional self-care for the wife and leveling up for the husband. The couple discusses the need for physical and emotional healing after childbirth and the gradual process of getting back into a sexual relationship. They highlight the importance of communication, routines, and meeting each other's needs. The conversation also touches on the impact of parenthood on personal growth and the significance of sex in a committed relationship. "I have a follow-up question to podcast 264. Greg talked about kids being more autonomous, but that you don't want your spouse to be autonomous. This is a new concept to me. What I've heard (from [well-known life coach]) is that since you can't control circumstances that you need to change the way you think about them so that you are OK with your circumstances instead of being discouraged or saddened by them. So, I have, in some ways, done this with my husband, so that I won't be bothered by things he does or doesn't do. I'm wondering now if that was a mistake. I just don't want to be one of those wives that is constantly getting after her husband and being critical of him because I know that criticism from a spouse is hard and can hurt. I'd rather my husband feel like I'm his cheerleader. I know for myself when people see the good in me I am encouraged to do better, and when people are critical of me it can feel discouraging." In this episode, Greg and Rachel answer this question and discuss the importance of being interdependent with your spouse instead of independent. They emphasize that being interdependent is key to creating an extraordinary marriage and adds layers of vulnerability, intimacy, and connection. They criticize the half-truths taught by some coaches and experts, stating that while it may produce short-term results, it doesn't address the underlying issues. They stress the need to understand the real underlying problems in a marriage and to have open and honest dialogue with your spouse. They also discuss the differences between men and women in terms of emotions and the significance of stability and constancy in a relationship. In this conversation, Greg and Rachel discuss the importance of addressing underlying sources of frustration in a marriage and finding the balance between being critical/providing feedback and being a cheerleader for your spouse. They emphasize the need for constructive criticism and setting firm boundaries when necessary. They also highlight the significance of interdependence and the vulnerability that comes with needing each other in a marriage. They caution against becoming too autonomous and seeking emotional support or validation from sources outside of the marriage. Overall, they stress the importance of open communication and working together to create an extraordinary marriage. RESOURCES: Let us help you in your extraordinary family life journey. This week's question came from a member of Rachel's 28-Day Challenge who said: "I really struggle with trying to do everything. I feel like when I was doing the M1 (Marriage Level 1) Challenge my marriage was great. But I can't keep it up on that level while I'm trying to focus on my kids. And when I focus on my kids then my husband feels neglected. And if I take time for myself then I feel my kids and husband are being neglected. I feel that everyone needs me all the time and I can't be there for a spouse and 4 kids all the time. I can only focus on one are or one person at a time and when I'm trying to 'do everything' instead of everything being a little bit better, I feel that everything is not getting the attention that it needs so it's all suffering. I feel stretched too thin and like I need to be more than one person to accomplish everything." As a mother of 7 children I totally relate. I've been there! And yet, I have been able to accomplish a crazy amount of things -- homeschooling, traveling the world, an incredible marriage, building my own six-figure business, being a partner with my husband in other businesses, investing, and so much more. So HOW am I able to 'do it all'? Is it really possible?? That's what we dive into in this episode with very specific strategies and practices that Greg and I use on a daily and weekly basis. We talk about operating from the right 'heart state' and the importance of the 'energy' you bring to your daily interactions with your spouse and children. We also discuss the importance of 'leveling up' and what that actually means (it may not be what you think). We also cover the 'emotional bank account' and how many of your accounts are overdrawn with your family members which is making things way harder than they need to be. If you have big dreams and goals for an extraordinary family and marriage but feel overwhelmed, spread too thin, empty, burnt out, or unsure of how to 'do it all' then this episode is for you! This week's awesome questions come from wives asking, "What do you do when your spouse tells you that you need to get a backbone and manage your own emotions when you tell him that the demeaning way he looks at you is hurtful during a disagreement? He is only trying to give me a firm "no" in response to something I wanted to discuss, but the way he looked at me was cold and intense...it's so hard to describe. So I was trying to communicate to him that he can still disagree but do it in a pleasant, loving manner. I know he's super defensive because of feeling like he's admitted in the past to owning up to his stuff, but it almost sounds like he thinks now he shouldn't have to do it anymore because he's done it so much. I bought 'The Empowered Wife' book which you recommend and want to read it, but I'm trying to finish up some other books first, and I hope that book has some answers... But do you guys have any thoughts for me?? My first line of defense is to shut off and not discuss the situation cause he just goes around in circles and he thinks I need to change and I think he needs to just be aware that his nonverbal language is real, but he literally thinks he did nothing wrong. I know I can change the way I react and think about it, but those cold looks don't encourage more open discussion for me. Maybe I just let it go and hope that part of our relationship changes over time. Maybe it has to do with his current stress levels and on and on. Honestly, I thought those kinds of stares were behind us so I guess they can still resurface during times of stress or if he's tired etc." We've all been there at some point! And this excellent topic is so important for spouses to work through if you want to grow closer and build a relationship that can build the life of your dreams. "One thing I did have a question about is teaching kids finances and even talking to my spouse about it. We have no communication when it comes to finances. My husband is an entrepreneur businessman and very smart and I don't know a lot about that so I just let him deal with it. It's not the best situation but it has been this way for our entire marriage. We both want to be better at working together but what we are doing isn't working. He tells me he wants me to know what's going on but we haven't found a way where we can be open and talk without getting frustrated. He gets frustrated with me probably because I don't do things the way he does and I get frustrated with him because of the way he is doing it. LOL. If there is a book you could recommend or if you have a podcast sharing how you and Greg handle finances that would be awesome. Also, how do you teach your kids about money? My kids came to me the other day and they could feel the stress about money the past few weeks and it's really hard. It kind of feels like a feast or famine kind of deal. Things are going well, dad is happy, we can go do things, and then when things are tight it's a total flip and he goes from being totally free with money to saying "Why do you expect me to buy everything? We can't always do xyz...blah blah blah" and the kids get so confused. I do too. I know I am part of the problem too but I just don't know how to fix it." A fantastic and very relevant question! We have been there before -- feast or faminine. In our childhoods we both experienced poverty and lack, and in our adult, married lives together as well. So how did we move past it? By learning to communicate about money, abundance, bills, stress, income, and more. In this episode, we will share some specific strategies that have worked for us which have allowed us to move from a poverty, scarcity mindset to one of abundance -- which has helped us to double and triple and even 10x our income from the time we started as newlyweds. I received this excellent question in my Instagram DM "How do you decide which scientific research to listen to? Particularly when it comes to health-related topics like what is healthy to eat and what is not? It seems there is a pretty consistent message in science and research to avoid highly processed foods and sugar. But on the finer points with things such as seed oils, carnivore diet, intermittent fasting, coffee/tea etc. it seems that there is just as much research on the opposite side of the thing you and Greg believe. For example, I can find research from all kinds of researchers, scientists, and doctors saying that coffee/tea is either neutral or slightly beneficial while you and Greg believe it is unhealthy. And the same for how many vegetables/grains should be included in a diet. There is a lot of research saying you should be eating a wide variety of plant fiber. With all of the mix of information, I'm just wondering what your process is for deciding what to listen to or believe?" The world of 'what to eat' and 'what is healthy' is more confusing now than it ever has been in the history of the world. Why are humans are more confuddled now than ever about what to put in their mouths? Why do we have so many 'diets' that seem healthy but are actually malnourishing or toxic? In this episode, Greg and Rachel will dive into why 'food' is so confusing these days and how to know what to believe about all the conflicting research that is out there. They also talk about why many people become 'converted' to diets such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, raw, etc. -- and why this 'conversion' should not be a long-term, life-long decision. It went well and I am finally seeing some good results. I have invested a lot of time in this. However, my 17-year-old daughter is not that motivated. What can I do?" In this episode, Greg and Rachel share super specific strategies that WORK, which they have used to raise their five teenagers (out of seven children). They'll explain how they have been able to inspire, motivate, and train their teens to WANT to help out around the house, work hard, and take responsibility -- all while maintaining and developing deep, lasting, positive relationships with their teens and now young adults. They expound on a technique they use called 'Privilege-Based Accountability' and the need for teens and young adults to practice life skills by earning privileges instead of giving them freely and automatically. Automatic privileges disempower children and teens and gives them a sense of entitlement, besides making them irresponsible and unmotivated to work. I really wish I could live a little more extraordinarily as your family does, but alas, I have a spouse (who I of course love!) that doesn't feel the same. I desperately want to travel, but he doesn't. I long to do things a different way, but he doesn't. I like to read and listen to podcasts and all the like, but he doesn't. I'm slightly ashamed to admit this but I can't seem to handle much. I want to be a hard worker, but it seems like other people are able to handle so much more than me. I'm an introvert who is sadly socially awkward, needs lots of reflection time, and has never been encouraged or supported. I've never felt capable of much of anything. I want different for myself and definitely don't want my kids in this same boat!! What is your advice for increasing my capacity to be able to handle more? Especially without any encouragement or support. I want better! I just don't know how to get there." This is a FANTASTIC question and something we totally relate to as a former introverted, 'weak', shy, socially awkward girl or boy who never imagined that we would be coaching, hosting a podcast, or traveling the world with our seven children. Listen to this episode to learn how we were able to overcome these 'limiting factors' that kept us from living a more extraordinary life. Discover how we built a foundation of positive habits using clarity, focus, and prevention so that we can direct more of our energy toward achieving the life of our dreams instead of existing in survival mode. #253 Sex IS a NEED for an Extraordinary Marriage

On Instagram, I saw a reel that stated "Myth: Sex is a need. Fact: Sex is a desire, not a need." "All of us can live without sex; we cannot live without water, food, or belonging." I had to disagree and responded: "It depends on how you define 'need'. For survival, no. For connection, bonding, and love -- yes, it's a need. Can you imagine if you're husband said, "You don't NEED me to talk to you. It's just a desire' and then went days, weeks, or months without talking because it's not a 'need'? You would feel pretty neglected. So if you want an extraordinary relationship then sex -- and talking -- are NEEDS.' While the argument may be true that 'needs' are ONLY things that we can't live without -- water, food, belonging -- it's inaccurate when we're talking about the surviving -- not to mention the THRIVING -- of our marriage relationship. Yes, people can live without sex. And talking. But an extraordinary marriage cannot. Of course, there are extremes when sex in marriage is not an option (injury, postpartum, old age). But we're not talking about those rare instances. We're talking about marriages where couples CAN have sex but are NOT having it. And I get it. As a woman who once *hoped* to find evidence that would convince my husband we never had to have sex again, I know how relieving it can be to believe that his need for sex is not real or is some how wrong or unrealistic. But it's just not true. Men (and women) want and need intimacy, but for some (usually men) their deepest intimacy takes the form of sex. And that's OK! And when you learn to use both sex and communication together they create an eternal circle of connection between spouses. Listen to this episode now so you can begin to see sex as an OPPORTUNITY for connection, not a burden or obligation. When you have this paradigm shift then everything changes. And you finally discover the key to building the relationship you've always wanted. A member of my 28-Day Challenge coaching program asked: "I'm curious: what do your kids do for work or how do they learn work ethic? Our oldest is almost 16 and starting a job this summer which is flexible (thank goodness) but as much as she and our family go places we are trying to make sure we're home for part of the summer so she can get hours at that job and earn some money! I know there are ways to earn outside a typical job: do you have a list of ideas for me? We considered selling some of her crafty works on Etsy and she's done babysitting jobs, but I don't see those online options really "paying off". When we consider doing yard work for others or house cleaning etc, I wonder how safe that is for her to go into homes alone... ...and I feel like our summers will be eaten up soon by our older kids trying to hold down jobs. My spouse feels it's so important for them to learn how to work for someone and they can work during the school year, but it would have to be a REALLY flexible employer. ;) I'd love any insight you (or others!) have." And... "Greg said once that his children WILL be wealthy when they grow up. What is it that gives him that kind of confidence (without of course giving them the money!

"I wanted to know what you guys think about screen time... I stopped letting my son (6) watch but then we reintroduced it as my husband said that if it's in a foreign language it can be beneficial exposure to the language... We limited it to an hour, but I feel like it is too stimulating and it affects his behaviour. It feels like that is all he can think about sometimes. I haven't read much about it, but I think it's not good for their brains it's too addictive." A fantastic question and concern for all parents. In this episode, we dive into the complicated and real challenges facing us as parents -- and individuals -- as we seek to navigate new territory -- being the first people in the history of the world trying to raise children with so many screens. So how do we do it --effectively? What dangers are we facing? What opportunities? How young is 'too young' to let kids use screens? How much is 'too much' screen time? And how do we ensure, as parents and role models, that we are setting a good example of technology use for our children? We answer all these questions and more to help you teach your kids that screens are 'tools not toys' and that we can maintain mental, emotional, and physical health when we use devices responsibly. #250 Wokeism is a Cult that is Destroying Society

School Of Awesome Sauce with Greg Denning

It wasn't too long ago that I would have been hesitant to make such a bold statement -- that wokesim is a dangerous cult. That's because I have many beliefs that are in line with the underlying viewpoints, such as open-mindedness, acceptance, and tolerance. But after lots of study, research, and observation over the past year or two, and, being presented with multiple 'case studies' of woke ideology gone wrong... Plus combining that with books we've been reading such as Crime and Punishment, Anna Karenina, Brave New World, and The Psychology of Totalitarianism... We've come to discover that sometimes virtues can go to far and become vices. This is why we now feel passionate and confident about saying that 'wokeism is a cult that is destroying society'. Why a cult? ALL religions first began as cults, until they reached a tipping point in membership. But cult members share beliefs, practices, words, phrases, and ideologies with each other. They can identify one another by their signals, signs, FB profiles, preferred pronouns, and the flags they fly -- just like members of other cults or religions. Unfortunately, what began as virtues of compassion, anti-racism, and tolerance are starting to go too far in dangerous ways -- resulting in loss of life, increased crime, and destruction of property and the basic frameworks of society. We (all of us) are watching it unravel before our eyes -- IF we pay close attention and know where to look for red flags. And it's time for us to stand up and speak out. "I am wondering if I can expect more from my kids than I expect from husband? He has ADHD so he "gets distracted" easily and spends hours a day looking at news stories with his phone. Can I expect my teens to go on a phone diet [aka device fast] even though my husband is a poor role model? My husband hates nagging, I realized early in our marriage, and we have argued many times in the past about me wanting to expect more of him. Tired of arguing, I got to the point of leaving him alone. However, my kids need to learn good habits so I wonder if I can do work with them despite my husband's negative habits?" A fantastic question to an all-too-common family problem. Can we expect our children to live to 'higher standards' than one of the parents in the family? That's what we address in the episode, using an example from our personal life, along with experiences working with clients. We also touch on why 'ADHD is a label that lies' and what's really going on instead. AND we give additional strategies that are more effective than nagging to help encourage and inspire your spouse to 'step it up'. This applies to encouraging husbands AND wives. Making assumptions about a person's health based on their body size can be incredibly harmful. Not only are these assumptions based largely on weight stigma, but they ignore other health struggles an individual might be dealing with.   Dr. Gregory Dodell is a board-certified endocrinologist who received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his Internal Medicine and Endocrinology fellowship at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center affiliated with Columbia University, and he is in private practice at Central Park Endocrinology.    He joins us today to help us understand why taking a weight-neutral approach to endocrine issues is so important. Dr. Dodell also highlights the higher risk of eating disorders found in populations who happen to have diabetes or PCOS. Then, he speaks to the importance of honoring all our different shapes and sizes and what that means for diet recommendations. This is an incredibly important episode that helps us understand just how harmful weight stigma is, and why it's important to treat patients with a weight-neutral approach.   In this episode, we cover: [3:03] Taking a weight-neutral approach in his practice as an endocrinologist [9:12] Why there's a higher risk of eating disorders in diabetic and PCOS populations [11:17] Why we're all meant to be different shapes and sizes and what that means for diet recommendations [13:12] What is weight stigma and how does it have a negative impact on health [19:59] Understanding endocrine issues and where they stem from [26:07] Does weight ever worsen a condition? DID. We're talking… The A/C going out in Houston, TX in the summer, which led to...Thunder and/or jets being loud AF through the open, swampy windowCat yowling to be let into the officeMe completely losing my train of thought and announcing itThe electrician showing up and ringing the doorbellMy office door opening itself/poltergeists manifesting at a weird timeMe going on irrelevant tangentsMy roommate interrupting to ask when I planned on shutting down the recording so the electrician could cut powerThis happens to you right out of the gate when you're doing something new and scary, and it's totally understandable that you might want to quit… or declare yourself “not cut out for this”. But I dare you to find evidence of any of the above in this episode. That's right… Angie learned to edit. BOOYAH.So even when you make mistakes or do it less than perfect… the point is to DO it.
