When I was a kid, even before I had started harp lessons, I used to go to summer camp in the mountains. I grew up in the Philadelphia area, and the closest mountains to us were the Pocono Mountains. These aren't mountains by Rocky Mountain standards, not nearly as high, peaked or impressive, but they are beautifully wooded and green, with rivers and lakes. In order to get to summer camp, we had to drive through the Lehigh Tunnel which fascinated me. Driving through an actual mountain was a little scary. Of course, the scariness was part of why it was my favorite part of the trip. Tunnels are truly an engineering miracle, in my opinion, especially considering that tunnels can be drilled from both sides to meet - if the calculations are correct - in the middle. The earliest known example of a tunnel that was dug from both sides is the Tunnel of Eupalinos, in the Greek isles, constructed in the 6th century BCE. WIth pickaxes, chisels, hammers and shovels, two teams dug through Mount Kastro from both sides and managed to meet in the middle. The tunnel has some zigs and zags, but the fact that they actually met and broke through is a testament to their engineering prowess. Why is this relevant for us today? Because we're going to approach the technical requirements of our music from the other side of the mountain. I know you've heard me talk about the importance of doing your technique work daily. And naturally, our pieces require our technique to be used in very specific ways. These are the two sides of our mountain: ongoing technical development and piece-specific technical demands. We want them to meet in the middle, where the music is. Today we are going to focus on arpeggios and three different ways arpeggios are used in our music. These aren't the only ways arpeggios are used, of course, but these are common enough that they are worth our time and attention. We'll look at these technique challenges and how to meet them from both sides, with exercises that will help you build the necessary skill and with the understanding of the underlying principles that will help you develop your technique for that particular musical instance. It's all about skills in context today. A luz vermelha brilhante te entrega. [...] Troque as lâmpadas. This week: our return to the realm of IZ, the personification of critical Indigenous studies as imagined by MEDIA INDIGENA regular Kim TallBear (University of Alberta professor of Native Studies), a character she embodied in her keynote at “Of the Land and Water: Indigenous Sexualities, Genders and Ways of Being,” hosted earlier this year in Whitehorse by the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. And in this back half of the adventures of IZ (missed the first half? catch it here), we hear her thoughts about a pair of close encounters: the first, “IZ Speaks Back,” a virtual date with a tiny troop of technophiles hoping to hear some extraterrestrial intel ; the other, “IZ Confesses,” a slick if surreal soirée celebrating racial diversity in science. Making space once again for Kim's other worldly explorations, host/producer Rick Harp along with audio producer and MI editor, Cassidy Villebrun-Buracas. Today's poem is Fourth Wall Arpeggio by A. Van Jordan. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “Sometimes, a speaker in a poem will acknowledge its own artificiality by addressing the reader directly or by making a self-referential remark, all to say, Hey, reader; I know you're there, listening in. Breaking the fourth wall in poetry removes pretense and lays bare a vulnerability that creates an intimacy and collapses distance.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Randy and Kev hit upon a phenomenal business idea after identifying a serious gap in the market where banjo players are concerned. The accordian is selected rather than a kazoo, we find that Arpeggio isn't the current AC Milan left back (who knew!), and Randy called his shot; well, on the album front at least! It's all going down on this week's episode and we'd like to drag you into the insane muck with us!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I love Queen, just not all their songs" or possibly, "Buena banda, mala canción"Today's episode covers Brian's synthy track from side two of "Hot Space", the soaring "Las Palabras De Amor (The Words of Love)"NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 35:49!If you want to check out the Absofunkinlutely track that we used in the episode, "Soul Sucker", which was written by the Cardinal and included the album "Blues Kid City", you can check that out here. This is preparation work for the left hand before playing with both hands. A broken chord is called an arpeggio. Arpeggio is an Italian word meaning "in the style of a harp." A triad is a three-note chord. Watch the closing credits about musical terms. Thanks for watching.

Arpeggio, also known as a "broken chord," denotes a chord in which each note is audibly heard separately. Specifically, they're the notes that make up the chords played separately. This is the episode where pretty much everyone gets thrown under the bus! Our amazing mom shares her wonderful recipe for brownies, along with many family stories of "camouflage and subterfuge." We have updates on the Knitalong Bootie is doing with Marie Greene and Bossy's Arpeggio poncho.
Grab your guitar, because today you're learning 1 easy arpeggio that makes soloing over minor ii-V-I progressions a piece of cake. When learning jazz guitar, you often spend a ton of time on major ii-V-I soloing devices and concepts. It's an easy progression to get started on as you can use the major scale to outline each chord in the beginning. Plus… There are tons of famous major ii-V-I phrases and licks to learn and add to your jazz guitar solos. But. What happens to many of us, myself included when I was first learning, is you nail major ii-V-I lines and then just kind of guess or fumble through minor ii-V-I's. Yes, minor ii-V-I's are tougher to solo over than their major cousin. But… That doesn't mean there aren't shortcuts you can take to solo over minor ii-V-I's today, sound good, and build a foundation for further study down the road. In this lesson you do just that. First, you learn how to play a Cm7b5 arpeggio. Next, you slide that arpeggio up the neck to solo over F7alt with the exact same shape. To finish, you slide the shape up again to solo over Bbm7 with a m7b5 arpeggio. One arpeggio, three chords, endless possibilities. Oh, and you put a strong focus on developing melodies in your jazz solos as well with these interactive exercises. Have fun soloing over minor ii-V-I's in this practice session. And… Grab the TAB and practice tips for these arpeggios here. It's a historic crossover as Emily and Harley are joined by Karen Peterson (POST Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Illustrated). Karen uses her Japanese fluency to cover Stardom and New Japan and provide a window into how these promotions are viewed in their home nation without things getting lost in translation. They discuss how Stardom has changed under Bushiroad, the forthcoming IWGP Women's Championship, and why Japanese fans were shocked to see Karen get a photo with L.I.J. https://twitter.com/heykarensensei Karen's Historic X-Column at New Japan World
Grab you guitar, today I'm sharing with you one of my favorite jazz arpeggio shapes with some color, upper color tones to explore in your solos. In today's lesson, you learn how to play an arpeggio that adds both 9th and 11th color tones into your jazz guitar solos. I first learned this colorful arpeggio from a Joe Pass solo I transcribed, and later found it again in Pat Martino's solos, among other great players. First, you learn the first half of the m7 arpeggio and improvise with that shape. (I comp the chords for you just like a one-one-one lesson.) Next, you learn the full arpeggio and solo with that shape as you and I jam together over an Am7 vamp. To finish, you focus on phrasing, rhythms, and playing by ear & instinct in your arpeggio lines and solos. Have fun as you learn this arpeggio, jam over a bossa nova groove with me, and build your jazz vocabulary in a fun and interactive lesson. Get the TAB and practice tips for this arpeggio here. https://www.mwgcourses.com/p/joe-pass-arpeggios Lesson Contents 0:00 - Am11 Arpeggio Shape 0:38 - Lesson Material 1:14 - Memorization Exercise 1 3:02 - Soloing Exercise 1 4:17 - Memorization Exercise 2 6:40 - Soloing Exercise 2 8:10 - Leaving Space Exercise 11:15 - Jazz Rhythms Exercise 14:15 - Soloing Exercise 3 16:44 - Further Practice

A little extra treat to celebrate the recent release of Gadi Sassoon's Chaos & Order EP. After being featured in a few mixes and Gadi's own sets, we're pleased to present a study of Hania Rani's astounding track, Buka which Gadi recently created after obsessing over the piece, recomposing it from scratch in his own unique style. Along with a free download of the track available on Soundcloud (and a link to the .wav), Gadi has also made the Max for Live plugin he created to produce the track, available as a free download (also here on dropbox). Gadi Sassoon · Solido Platonico (Hania Rani "Buka" Arpeggio Study)“A few months back I was studying different arpeggiation styles with my friend Italian producer MACE, and we listened obsessively to Hania Rani's incredible piece Buka; from there I decided to dive deep into this particularly amazing phrase she has in that piece, and to explore all the ways I could transform it by playing it with synths and resequencing it by using a gridless arpeggiator I made in Max for Live.” - Gadi SassoonPlease support Hania's music and the album Home, (it's an essential album!) Michael Arthur (@inklines) joins Jason to discuss R.E.M.'s 1996 album New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Did everyone grow up in a crappy time for pop music? Does anyone want to be someone's Easter Bunny? What is it about this band? About Michael Stipe? Is this record just too long or too same-y because it's so live? Jason and Michael discuss all these things, plus the creative process, how bands keep it fresh on their 10th album and beyond, and much more. For this second lesson of “Danza Mora” for the flamenco guitar, you will be doing an upward arpeggio; it's called an “upward” arpeggio because the plucking pattern runs toward you (the player). The arpeggio pattern is as follows: a&p-m-i, a-m-i, a-m, with a consistent accent on the a&p. The third and fourth fretting fingers will run through some relatively demanding legado (hammer-on) movements and some slides as well. Remember to keep your right hand stable so as to allow for maximum precision while executing the arpeggio. Enjoy!
